Mar 11, 2010

grub> i don't know if there is still a way to recover my previous installation. also tell which is the best and most reliable way to resize ext4 root partition so that i do not make the same mistake in future.

Fedora :: Unable To Re Read Sda When Gparted

Jan 21, 2010

I have the following problem on fedora 12, x64 amd; I have installed fedora 12 from a live cd, whit custum partition tables (no lvm or somting like that). my sceam is (on a single 80 gb maxtor sata disk only 1 system, clean install):

/
/home
swap

Notitng more (not needed also). The installation was successfully. No problems on the install part. ALs no problems on the ugprade part. I installed the rest using yum groupinstall. When i want to add the extra 4 disks (all samsung 1 tb spinpoint sata) that i have for my backupdata, non of the partiotionprograms can recognise. If i do; moun /dev/sdb1/ /media/sdb1, it says that i need to add the file system. well, by some sort of misstake, i could find a workaround for this. When start gparted, select on of the samsung disks, select any of the flags in gpart, remove the flag and give it a ok, gpart can read the amount of data thats used. After that i ame able to mount whit a simple mount /dev/sbd1 /media/sdb1 command. When i use this command: hdparm -z /dev/sdb1, i can mount the disk afterwards, whitout problems. Of course, i need to add them als to my /etc/fstab file, so they automount each time at boot.........

Ubuntu :: Use GParted With The Live CD In Order To Edit Partitions?

Oct 1, 2010

Basically, I would like to have a separate /home partition on my hard disk that will be shared by two different Ubuntu releases. In other words, I would like Maverick and Lucid to be on their own separate partitions, but to share the same /home. I already have Lucid installed (no separate /home). I know how to use GParted with the Live CD in order to edit partitions, but the main question I have is how do I migrate my /home folder to its own partition without ruining data? I've skimmed through some GParted tutorials but they don't exactly detail what I want.

Once that is done, I need to know if it is possible for Lucid and Maverick to share the same /home partition, and how would I set that up?

OpenSUSE Install :: Use GParted Live CD To Shrink Windows XP Partition?

On GParted I shrank my /dev/sda1 (Windows) from 36GB to 26 GB. Then I had 10 GB of unallocated space. I didn't know how I could use this unallocated space to increase the size of /dev/sda7 (/home). How do you do this?

Ubuntu :: Parition Hard Drive Without Having Burn A Gparted Live Cd?

Jul 22, 2010

I decided I'm going to go back to a dual boot to see if I can get some of the slackware issues resolved on my laptop; its ubuntu only at the moment due to wireless problems. I've only got one hard drive so I can't simply unmount and repartition from gparted, I've lost all of my random linux live cds, and can't find a spare blank optical disc. Is there a way to boot from directly from the iso or from a flash drive or something?

Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To Resize Partition With Gparted On Live CD?

Feb 17, 2011

I recently got new hard drives for more space and copied all my old drives onto this one (everything mirrored, no problems)The thing is, when I first setup my Ubuntu, I only allotted like 20GB because of space. Now that I have new hard drives, I wanted to give it more space, roughly double it to 50gb.The problem is, I am unable to resize it.I have booted into the Ubuntu Live CD, and started Gparted. I see all my stuff there, including the unallocated space next to my ubuntu partition (I left it so i could fill it when I expanded the partition)

The problem is, I am unable to make it larger. I right click, click on resize/move, but when I do, it just shows that I'm at my maximum size for that partition, I can only shrink it.so my question is, how in the world can I extend that partition into the unallocated space?I've tried formatting the unallocated space to ext3 to try and merge it, no success.I tried moving my ubuntu partition all the way to the right (end of the disk) so maybe I could extend it to the left, nothing

Fedora X86/64bit :: No Internet Access With Browser - Email Client / Get It?

Dec 13, 2009

Web Browsers and email clients unable to access the Internet.
Able to get software and updates with no problem.

The IVP6 setting is ignored in the Network Configuration. I have triggered it both ways.
As for the firewall configuration, well it freezes at the splash screen when invoked.

Fedora 12 is the first spin, since Fedora 9, that I was able to get any updates. Versions 10 and 11 could not access the internet with anything, no matter what was attempted.

BTW, I am using Mandriva 2010 to get through here.

But when I get on this side, it goes back to the dial-up days (yes I said the DU word). yum updates seem to be just fine, and e-mail seems to be fine. just firefox is slow. And now that I put the x64 Flash in (thanks to leigh123linux), with that working too it seems even a little slower again.

Ubuntu Installation :: No Partition Resize On Install / Live Gparted Crashes?

Oct 10, 2010

Want to repartition/resize existing 1/2 full 60MB sda2 currently containing NTFS. The "Allocate drive space" does not seem to have a resize option (the 10.04 docs claim there was a resize option here). When I run 10.10 gparted in live mode gparted crashes for unknown reason before it even finishes scanning the disk. Am I missing something here? (Never tried to resize an ntfs part. with Ubuntu.) The laptop I am installing this on currently has XP that crashes a lot for unknown reasons.

After the initial splash page - the title Ubuntu with the underlining blinking dots - the screen goes bonkers - criss crossy-like.I've installed Ubuntu 10.04 previously with no problem. I've tried both the RC version and the daily build version. Is it a problem with the install CD or a hardware issue - i.e., integrated video card? (...Although you would think that if it was the video card, the splash page wouldn't appear.)

General :: Partition Gparted Fdisk / When Reduced The Size Of Some Linux Partitions Using Gparted?

Sep 18, 2009

I have 3 Ubuntu installations & a PCLINUXOS, plus Windows XP installed on one hard disk. I still can boot to each one of them and can mount each one using Ubuntu.

The problem "may" have occurred when I reduced the size of some linux partitions using gparted. I still have plenty of space in each of those partitions.

When I started gparted all of the HD was unallocated. I did that from each ubuntu installation and the PCLINUX installation, plus LIVECDs. All indicated the space was unallocated.

When I did an fdisk -l from a Puppy Linux LiveCD I got a normal start and ends of each partition.

When I tried it from Ubuntu installation or live cd, I received the following types of responses:

Code:
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo fdisk -l /dev/sda5

Disk /dev/sda5: 28.5 GB, 28566397440 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 3473 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x00000000
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo fdisk -u /dev/sda5

The number of cylinders for this disk is set to 3473.There is nothing wrong with that, but this is larger than 1024,and could in certain setups cause problems with:

1) software that runs at boot time (e.g., old versions of LILO)
2) booting and partitioning software from other OSs (e.g., DOS FDISK, OS/2 FDISK) Plus the Windows partition seems to go over its limits.

Since all of my OS installations are still working, I don't know how critical this is. From reading another post, I understand this might be able to be fixed by making some changes in fstab.

Ubuntu :: 11.04 Live-CD Cannot Read Ext4 Filesystem?

Aug 18, 2011

I want to install 11.04 next to my working 10.04 system. First I need to make room for the new system so I have booted from a live cd and started GParted. In GParted the partition with the 10.04 system on it, /dev/sda1, has a red circle with an exclamation mark in it and I cannot resize it. When I doubleclick on /dev/sda1 there is the following warning

Quote:

Failed to change to directory '.'(Stale NFS file handle)
Failed to change to directory '.'(Stale NFS file handle)
Unable to read the contents of this file system!
Because of this some operations may be unavailable.

The following list of software packages is required for ext4 file system support: e2fsprogs v1.41+.

The 10.04 system is working and has worked like a dream for a couple of years and the machine has never had any other system on it. Why would the live CD not be able to read ext4 fs?
