I have been trying to download wubi to intstall Ubuntu to run alongside an existing windows intallation. However, it was taking ages so I cancelled and tried again and each time it seems to be requiring more time. I'm now up to 200 hours of required time!

View 1 Replies View RelatedBefore you start thinking that I made a mistake with the title of the thread, or thinking that FF5 has not been ye unvelied (it is, its a beta AFAIK), read my story: I dont know how it happened, I think it may be a ppa, but I dont know which one (could it be independent third party sources?). Other ideas are welcomed. Thing is: when I click the FF icon I access to ff5, and there are a number of aps that are not compatible, thus, my need to keep using ff4. I googled and found: [URL]... and tried to follow the instructions: ff5 works without issues ff4: created a new directory in /home/dexter/Compiled/firefox4, where I extracted ff4.tar.bzz.
I have also run Code: firefox -profilemanager and created 2 profiles: Firefox5 and Firefox4 Firefox5 leads to ff5 without issues, I didnt change anything Firefox4: I have tried to link it to the current folder of ff4, so it reads: /home/dexter/Compiled/firefox4. Launchers: the ff icon leads to ff5, no issues newly created ff4 launcher reads: /home/dexter/Compiled/firefox4 -no-remote -P "Firefox4" but when clicked:. Could not launch application, Failed to execute child process "/home/dexter/Compiled/firefox4" (Permission denied)
I have installed Ubuntu 10.10 as the only OS on my Macbook 2,1's entire hard drive (used Live CD to reformat and install). Now I am wondering if it is possible to add a partition and install Mac OS X Snow Leopard alongside Ubuntu, for dual boot purposes. I have seen a lot of documentation for doing this the other way around--adding a Ubuntu partition to an existing Mac OS X installation, but I haven't found an answer for adding OSX to existing Ubuntu. View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to upgrade my Win8/Wheezy 64-bit machine to Jessie 8.1 by installing from the amd64-bit netinstall iso image on a USB flash drive. I had done the previous, Wheezy, install on a disk partition that was whole-partition LUKS/LVM drive, with separate logical partitions for swap, root, and home.
Before doing the upgrade, I booted to the BIOS to ensure that my UEFI system had the correct, CSM and Legacy modes enabled in it, so that installer would boot using the non-efi BIOS mode.
Step one of the upgrade was to boot the netinstall and enter the rescue mode so that I could manually do the cryptsetup/LVM business. When I returned to the installer, I mounted the now-recognized logical partitions normally, choosing to format only the swap and / partitions.
During the entire process, I had to go into rescue mode one more time to manually mount the unencrypted /boot partition, along with my /home partition. I copied a backup of my old /etc/crypttab from the latter, and after returning to the installer, finished the install. That finish included installing grub on my hard drive's main boot partition.
Everything seemed to finish with no problems. However, when I try to boot the debian bootloader, I get tossed to grub rescue with the message that '/grub/x86_64-efi/normal.mod' doesn't exist. At this point I returned to the installer, mounted the /boot partition, and saw that there grub-install didn't create that an x86_64-efi directory at all. Instead, it had created an i386 directory. The exact name escapes me at the moment.
I *think* that my install was clean other than the last bit that was related to installing the bootloader. How to reinstall the bootloader in such a way as to make all of this work.
I have been using ubuntu for a good time and now i want to install opensuse.I have dwnlded the new (11.2) version 2 times but on installing it says unable to create repository. it takes a full day to dwnld here.. please suggest how to use the existing dwnld or a way toget a correct dwnld. i think the earlier one is corrupt.

If I do the normal isntallation process, will that wipe off all my current ubuntu and windows stuff? I just want to clean up my computer and don't mind about losing all the files, because I have them backed up. I just wanted Vista off my computer!
View 2 Replies View Relatedfirst of all I am a casual PC user so I apologise if this is a stupid question. I was using Ubuntu 10.04 32-bit alongside Windows, choosing between them each startup. It was easy to install and all, but Ive recently found out I was using 32bit version, unlike my 64-bit Windows. Therefore, I guess I didnt get all the performance I could. So I downloaded the 64bit one, butned it to a CD and rebooted PC (I formatted all before so now I have only Win). However, when trying to install Ubuntu64 there was no option to install it side by side and choose on startup. So I went to advanced and there was the partitioning thing. Now I have C and D, each by 120GB for windows and I had left 240GB for Ubuntu. It is disk E, however when I chose to install it there it says there is no root file. I want the whole E disc to be used for Ubuntu and I dont know what mount point and the root thing to choose.
View 9 Replies View Relatedi have a backtrack install that i would like to keep while installing suse for an everyday OS; i start the install process but when it gets to partitioning the hard drive, it doesnt seem to recognize anything already being on there; it just gives me the setup for suse, ie:
sda1 ext3 = OS sda2 or sda5 = swap. do i have to configure a partition scheme? i installed ubuntu on a desktop alongside windows very easily due to grub graphical install/partition; is there not a similar function for suse?
I ran out of blank CD's. Is there a way I can download 64-bit Ubuntu 11.04 by using Wubi?
View 9 Replies View RelatedWhen I get to the "Allocate Drive Space" section, I have only 2 options, namely "Erase and use the entire disk", which alarms me because I want to install UNR alongside Windows XP on my ASUS Eee PC 1005HA. The other option is "Specify partitions manually (advanced)". For obvious reasons, I am reluctant to try this. I have a C Drive (Windows) and a D Drive (mainly for Backup of Windows). Each drive is about 72GB with about 60GB free on my D Drive. Obviously, this is where I would like to install UNR, but will I have to clear my D Drive completely? I still have about 27GB free on my C Drive.

I'm not very experienced in working with Ubuntu. I did try it using Wubi to install and that I liked very much. But now with the latest version (10.10) the wubi installer isn't showing every option. How do I get the old interface where you can install it alongside Windows? The first attachment is what I get when opening wubi.exe and the second one is what I would like. That is a 10.04 version.

I open the OS through my USB, click the "Install Ubuntu" button, click forward, and then comes my problem.

I installed 11.04 to dual boot alongside windows 7. I have a toshiba laptop with 2 125gb hdd. I'd like to split the space between the two os's. However, I have a wubi partition and some other ones I'd like to be rid of. When i boot i get four different ubuntu options, a window loader, the grub again. How do I clean this up?

I asked my friend who is a contributor to ubuntu, and runs a cyber security company to install it on my computer and he said that he will charge me $375 to do this. And then he said that it is not such a difficult thing, however, it will need a lot of tinkering with ubuntu before it works flawlessly. I didn't know what he meant and didn't want to get into it with him. I was wondering if you could direct me to the threads that discuss installation of Ubuntu alongside Windows 7 already installed and on a separate hardware. I don't wanna pay him that money and I'm very new to this. Also, I hope someone could explain what kind of tinkering is done before it works flawlessly.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am trying To install debian 6 with xp in dual boot after a crash during update version 10.10 to 11.04 (not enought space but no information about that ....so it's moment for change something ..) so i found unetbootin like the more simple way for my "ecodieselesecondhanddust pc" with download only iso image : debian-6.0.1a-i386-xfce+lxde-CD-1.iso without use any bash command ... after launch the usb key everything work well , except during the manual partition where i want use xp partition (ntfs) and not others choices proposed like fat ,btrfs,jfs,xfs,ex2,3 or 4..! how i can use NTFS choice and to be sure to not delete my xp partition with an other choice not appopriate to ntfs ? it's seems to add a kernel module with modprobe in bash , but i have not idea with which option exactly ?
View 14 Replies View RelatedI've tried several times over the past day to install Ubuntu Netbook using Wubi but it kept on failing after the download of the ISO. After checking the log, I notice that it complains that 10.04 != 10.04.1 regarding the version. For the netbook, the ISO downloaded is indeed 10.04 while the installation title says it is installing 10.04.1.
I am sure that there is an easy fix for this in Wubi. I've used Wubi in the past and I am quite happy about it. This is not the proper place for it, but I'ld like to see the installation type support VirtualBox too - i.e., the Ubuntu setup installed by Wubi should be able to run inside VirtualBox.
I got the xubuntu-10.04-desktop-i386.iso file in a folder with WUBI but it still keeps trying to downlaod the amd64 version. how can I stop this?

The installation process completed, popped the disc back out, but when booting up I get no boot menu and just load Windows 7. I don't get any error messages or any sort of feedback. If i go into BIOS, I only have Windows 7 as a bootable option. I presumed grub or an equivalent would be installed as part of the installation.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have already done the installation process following the guide on Ubuntu's site, got everything up and running but the partition that I made in the installer was too small. I was then directed by a friend (a slightly less inexperienced newbie) to modify this through Easeus Partition Manager. I shrunk the Windows 7 partition to only the space that was in use, giving the newly unallocated space to the Ubuntu partition. Set the changes and rebooted the computer, then got the message "unknown filesystem, grub rescue". Now have no idea what to do with this. What happened??
