View 5 RepliesI try to forward all the network traffic on specific port from my VPS to home PC.The problem is that I have dynamic IP at home so I've installed Dynamic Update Client (DUC) from no-ip.com.I also use 'redir' software on Centos VPS to redirect the traffic and everything works fine till my ISP change the IP of my home PC.Does Centos cache DNS queries by default (nscd is not running)? Is there a some way/software that will periodically check if the IP of particular domain has changed and update accordingly.

I know JohnVV. "Install a supported version of Fedora, like Fedora 11". This is on a box that has all 11 releases of Fedora installed. It's a toy and I like to play around with it.
I was laughing about klackenfus's post with the ancient RH install, and then work has me dig up an old server that has been out of use for some time. It has some proprietary binaries installed that intentionally tries to hide files to prevent copying (and we are no longer paying for support or have install binaries), so a clean install is not preferable.
Basically it has been out of commission for so long, that the apt-get upgrade DL is larger than the /var partition (apt caches to /var/cache/apt/archives).
I can upgrade the bigger packages manually until I get under the threshold, but then I learn nothing new. So I'm curious if I can redirect the cache of apt to a specified folder either on the command line or via a config setting?
I installed squid cache on my ubuntu server 10.10 and it is work fine but i want to know how to make it cache all files like .exe .mp3 .avi ....etc. and the other thing i want to know is how to make my client take the files from the cache in the full speed. since am using mikrotik system to use pppoe for clients and i match it with my ubuntu squid

View 2 Replies View Relatedi was looking for a way to stop my menus taking a few seconds to load my icons when i first open them and found a few guides suggesting using the gtk-upate-icon-cache command, but with the any colour you like icon theme i'm using (stored in my home folder .icons directory) i kept getting a "gtk-update-icon-cache: The generated cache was invalid." fault i used the inbuilt facility in the acyl script to copy the icons to the usr/share/icons directory and tried the command again, this time using sudo gtk-update-icon-cache --force --ignore-theme-index /usr/share/icons/ACYL_Icon_Theme_0.8.1/ but i still get the same error. i tried with several of the custom icon themes i've installed and only 1 of the first 7 or 8 i tried successfully created the cache.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI frequent update and install packages on a lots of machines using apt-get update and install.
I was wondering if I can just update and install on one machine and then copy those cached file
undar /var/cache/apt to other machine, so I can save downloading time while do apt-get install.
I tried, but seems apt-get ignored those files and downloading from source anyway. Any idea?
I need to install g77 in this distribution, but an apt-cache search won't find any match.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am installing openSUSE 11.2 on a laptop. After installation, reboot, auto-configuration, the screen show lines of text following "Starting SuSEconfig. The latest line is "Creating cache files for fontconfig". I don't understand why this specific operation takes too long; since almost an hour has passed. Is there a way to speed up and complete the process so that I can login and start using openSUSE? I did try hitting the spacebar and moving the mouse but nothing happens.

Disc's 1 & 3 failed Linux test at installation. Burned Disk 1 twice more and still fails. Went ahead with installation. Chose to Use all of the 20 B hard disk. Would not install via graphical. Finished after Disk 1. After re-starting computer and logging into root, only get CLI operability and can't seem to get a GUI. I'm new to linux - just thought I'd put this laptop to use to familiarize myself with it.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI was trying to update from 9.04 to 9.10.
During the installation, I kept getting tons of errors. Finally something came up saying that I had to abort the installation and it did some stuff. I tried running an application, but I got an error. So I restarted the system.
The normal screen came up where I had to choose the Ubuntu stuff (I'm new to Ubuntu) in the box. I noticed that it had gone to 8.10... which I had earlier before installing 9.04, which went great. So I chose the first on and the system failed to start. I rebooted and tried all the other options, but they all had errors. Now I'm booted to Windows.
I installed Ubuntu from a CD I created. But it is now outdated because it is 8.10, and I have already upgraded to 9.04. 9.04 to 9.10 is where stuff went wrong.
Trivial, I know. But I'd like to have more than with the default install of 10.4.

View 2 Replies View RelatedVery happy with new 10.4 install, however there is a nagging password prompt every time I boot. At first I thought it was the wireless but I have that automated and it asks for the password well after the internet connection is established. I am pretty sure it relates to the passwords for Twitter, Facebook etc that I gave it to use the new tools in 10.4 Is there any way to give it permanent permision so it doesn't ask me at boot up? I would hate to have to stop using the nice new tool because of this.

View 1 Replies View RelatedSo I installed Ubuntu Server 10.10 64-bit for testing purposes. But when I went to connect it to my wireless network at home, it showed that iwconfig wasn't installed by default like it did in 10.04. Does anyone know how I can either connect my system to the network without using iwconfig, or how I can get iwconfig and install it from a flash drive or some other form of digital media? And I can't do apt-get since I can't get on my network. And I also can't plug in a ethernet cable because my network port is broken.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have already had Vista installed on another drive and from what i've read on the webs you get to dualboot if you install ubuntu after vista. when i did install it (i installed on a blank hdd with no partitions, choosing the "erase entire disk" option since for some reason default option was attempting to eat a part of my windows 1 gb drive instead of using disk i specially made for it) and the grub 2 loaded for the first time, there was NO option to run vista. only 2 linux (normal and recovery) and 2 memtests. I've ran linux and went to google this. I found that i should add something to some config files in /etc/grub.d/From reading the readme file i understood i could add my own files that are named like NUMBER_SOMENAME and insert code into them. Because it said:Quote: For example, you can add an entry to boot another OS as01_otheros, 11_otheros, etc, depending on the position you want it to occupy inthe menu; and then adjust the default setting via /etc/default/grub. Anyone, the boot/grub/menu.lst and etc/fstab file of Ubuntu 10 LTS installed by default on HD (or whatever).
Installing this on an old Pent II 350 MHz machine. Ethernet card has a RTL8029 chip on it.
Install went well. During boot the statement "Determining IP information...fails" No IP is assigned to the NIC. I have DHCP running on my linksys router. Should not be an issue.
In a default install, will Cent OS 4.7 normally get the NIC setup with connectivity or is there further config work to do on setting up routes and iptables(firewall) ?
I changed the default player for mp3 to audacious, which works fine, just that every time I doubleclick a mp3 file, a second application button appears in my taskbar saying "opening [file]" which looks like the default player. this program will eventually time out and go away, but it's still annoying - any idea on how I would go about fixing this?

while looking for my installation disc, my wall-mate gives me this Ubuntu Studio dvd and instead of downloading a new one, i have installed the studio. at the first sight ... i am being a fond of studio version .. its really cool.
now, i am quite habituated with default appearance of ubuntu, i found studio appearance is quite unusual (for me, menu layouts, panel everything).
I would like to know how do i change this default appearance like ubuntu default 10.04 appearance. I am attaching a screen-shoot of my friends desktop, he upgraded his ubuntu thru apptitude update.
