Ubuntu :: Delete The Previous Partition But It Kept Coming Back

I recently installed 10.10 netbook remix on my Samsung N150 netbook alongside Windows 7 Starter. At the time of the first installation one of the forward buttons wasn't showing up so I was stuck and had to reboot and restart the installation. This happened after I had made the partition for Ubuntu so when I got back to that stage in installation there was already a partition made. I tried to delete the previous partition but it kept coming back so I made another partition for Ubuntu and installed it.
It was working fine apart from a problem with the right-click and dragging icons. Then I updated the grub and after restarting the machine my grub disappeared and I was left with a black screen with a blinking cursor. I reinstalled Ubuntu again using my external HD with new partitions (the same thing happened where the partitions kept coming back after trying to delete). Now my Windows won't load up and just goes straight to recovery. After I restored it the grub disappeared again.

So I just recently switched to Ubuntu because my computer's hard drive with windows died. When I bought a new hard drive, it was just easier to use Ubuntu. Anyway, I really like the operating system so far, and have had no problems except for one: When I close the screen on my laptop, the screen won't come back on when I open it. The buttons on my keyboard light up and everything like they should, but the screen stays black. I have tried doing Ctrl + Alt + F keys with no luck. I am very new to Ubuntu so please go slowly. I am using Ubuntu 10.10 on an HP Pavilion Dv4 laptop.

I am using Ubuntu 9.10 on an Acer Aspire 5050 (5052AWXMi model) and I am experiencing some problems of system Hibernation and Suspend.When I put my laptop to sleep mode (suspend) then after pressing a button system tries to open but what I get it is only a black screen.The same problem appears also when I am trying to hibernate my system. After opening my laptop again I am getting a message < waking up. Please wait > but then I get again a black screen.

I did an update to Firefox 3.6.16 and now it crashes each time it loads the homepage. I don't want to use Firefox 4 yet because some of the addons are still incompatible. So, how do I get the previous version of Firefox 3.6.15 for Ubuntu 10.10?

Everytime I leave the computer for a few minutes the screen goes black (I think in suspended state) and when I move the mouse it asks me for the administrator password. How do I make it so it doesnt ask me for it after coming back from suspended state?

I've been using Ubuntu for quite a while, several years, though several upgrades. Experimented with various things, uninstalled some and various other messy activities. Some things don't work as well as they used to. Sometimes my system crashes, or hangs for a while before coming back. I still get a KDE screen when I shut down, though I attempted to uninstal that desktop. I would like to start over, that is with as little trouble possible to reinstall from scratch. Have to save my user directories, also the directories for my LAMP applications.

If I leave my Macbook Pro 7,1 updating and come back to it a while later and I press a button to turn the screen saver off, it just has has a black screen a cursor in the corner and nothing else. It hasn't automatically rebooted, I know, because I dual boot and it would've booted into OS X. When this happens I can usually press ctrl+alt+F2 or something and I get a command line prompting me to login but if I try and type nothing appears at the login prompt. The only way I can recover from this is to hold down the power button to turn it off.

I have recently played around with Mac4lin a program to change the interface to one that resembles a Mac computer. I did not like the settings then decided to uninstall the program. It reverted to a really ugly looking gnome desktop rather than my previous settings. One thing that I don't like is that I have a foot icon on my gnome traditional menu button on the panel rather than the green ball type icon I used to have. I know it's not the end of the world that my icons do not look like it previously did, everything else is running smoothly, though I'm just more annoyed than anything else.

I went to YaST>Security and Users>User and Group Management and changed my username. Now I can't do anything (open home directory, start application, login, etc). I tried changing back the username by going to YaST at init 3 and changing back to the previous username.

I had a drive with a partition layout like so:
~50gig Windows 7 - NTFS
~100gig Ubuntu - EXT3
~100gig Snow Leopard - HFS+
~100gig Extended Partition
-- ~100gig Swap Disk - exFat
I wanted to delete the Snow Leopard partition and format the Swap Disk partition to something else. exFat was causing major file size bloat on small files. QT sdk bloated to like 11 gigs or something ridiculous like that. Anyways, I loaded up an Ubuntu 10.04 LTS live cd and gparted then deleted the Snow Leopard partition. Gparted said "Mission Accomplished" and tried to rescan the drive, but never found it. At this point I restarted the computer, a dell laptop, which didn't boot with an unable to find a bootable device error. The ubuntu live cd doesn't see the drive anymore. gparted scans for drives indefinitely and fdisk -l has no output.

im installing ubuntu and after I reach the partioning portion there's a prompt that says "before you select a new partition size, any previous changes have to be written to disk. you cannot undo this operation.Please note that the resize operation may take a long time.

after i click continue there's a prompt again saying
"too small size"
ok
then after i click ok it will go back to the partioning portion again.
im dual booting xp and ubuntu and there's a 30 gb on my drive C 16.4G is still unused.

KDE 4.6 - opensuse 11.4.
I have a separate ext4 partition which contains all my data (music, movies, etc). When I delete files from this partition it is very slow because it copies files from my data partition to the Trash folder in my home partition. How can I avoid this? Can't the trash be configured so that it uses a trash folder in each partition instead of copying files to another partition (which is slow).

I want to wipe out my Windows partition and reinstall due to sluggishness. I plan to use Windows instructions as if it was on a hard drive by itself. Will this affect the multi-boot capability or the Linux partition in any way? Would it be easier to reformat and partition the entire hard drive and re-install both OSes? I use OpenSuse 11.2 and Windows XP.

I have an Acer Aspire Netbook running a dual boot with Xp and Ubuntu Netbook Version (Lucid Lynx if I am not mistaken?) Anyway I plan on selling this netbook and I need to remove the Ubuntu Partition and go back to just a full Windows Xp partition with it's recovery partition also.

The only problem is I'm having trouble with Bindwood, the bookmark synchronising program. I'm on 9.10 and using firefox and whenever I try and delete a bookmark it just appears in my bookmarks next time I restart firefox.

I initially installed SuSe11.2 with /tmp mounted on separate partition on another physical disk( there are two physical disks). Now I want to attach disk with existing SuSe11.2 to another motherboard so I would like that /tmp becomes part of the root partition. Will deleting /tmp mount point in /etc/fstab create automatically new /tmp from root at next startup, or something else has to be done to achieve, that in future, /tmp resides on root partition instead? In this way it would be much easier to move the disk with SuSe11.2 to another motherboard.

My desktop computer has 2 hardrives, one 70gb and one 40gb, previously, the 40gb was windows XP and the 70gb was a backup, I decided to install opensuse on the 70gb backup, and now I want to wipe out the 40gb HDD that has windows xp and turn that into a back up.

I have a laptop with 2 x different versions of Ubuntu installed as follows:
Ubuntu 10.10 on a partition; and
Ubuntu ultimate edition gamers (based on ubuntu 10.10 I believe).
I've only recently installed the gamers edition as a dual boot to see what it looks like. Now I've had a play around with it I've realised that I don;t really like it.What's the quickest/easiest way of reverting back to my original ubuntu 10.10 as a single boot? I don't want to re-install 10.10 - I was hoping I could delete the gamers edition to get back to my original single boot 10.10.

I installed Ubuntu, with a dual boot functionality and worked great. I was recommended Backtrack 4 and I installed it in the system. Now, I try to use the dual boot with Backtrack, Ubuntu and Windows 7 and only Backtrack works. I tried the restore disks that I created when I got the laptop, but the problem persists. s there a way to delete this Backtrack from the system and go back to Windows 7?

I am trying to actually wipe my entire hard drive and figured it may just be easiest to format the hard drive and deleting the partitions. So when I go to System => Administration => Disk Utility => Select the Hard Drive => Click Delete Partition => And I get the error shown in my screenshots. What would be my best way to delete this partition and remove ubuntu completely for the time being. And yes I am using the latest RC. 10.04. However I don't suspect this is a bug.

A few months ago I decided to install ubuntu as a separate partition on my laptop which already had Windows 7. I am finally ready to remove it because I need the extra hard drive space.So: I have downloaded G-Parted and boot from the disk. When i select all the default settings, I am getting a "fatal server error no screens". Anyone have any ideas what to do? Ideally I want to remove the unbuntu partition and give Windows 7 all the HD space.

i need to get rid of Ubuntu from my laptop but will be putting it back on my main computer. I've followed guides and it showed that you go into computer management and right click on the Ubuntu partition and delete it, but i can't do this. This is what my screen looks like -

I am having trouble accessing my computer after abruptly shutting it down because it was booting off of a live CD and I just wanted it to boot of the HDD. When I try to boot up from the normal HDD I used to get a lot of errors about /dev/sda being not found, and then it went to an (initramfs) prompt, from which I could do pretty much nothing. I booted into a live CD, and basically I didn't need any of my data so I wanted to just get rid of the problem partition and reinstall. I attempted to delete the partition, but that didn't work, saying something about /dev/sda being busy (even though I had booted from a live CD and had not mounted the partition).
Anyhow, now when I try to boot from the HDD I get:
"Error: no such partition. grub rescue>"
Basically what I'm trying to do is just get rid of this partition and reinstall, but I keep getting errors about it being busy and not being able to delete the partition. Is there someone with a way to allow me to just blast this partition and reinstall? I've got a windows 7 partition on the same HDD and I'd really like to leave that one alone, but the ext4 and swap partition can just go.

OK so basically I have 3 partions on my 500 gb. hdd.
1. Windows 7 64-bit (375gb partion)
2. Ubuntu 9 (50gb partion)
3. Ubuntu 10(75gb partion)
Is there anyway I can remove Ubuntu 9 and allow Windows 7 to use that 50gb that was once used by Ubuntu 9.
