View 1 Replies View RelatedThere are a couple commands I want to run in a terminal that require me to provide my password. I really don't want those commands ending up in any kind of history or anywhere else where they could be seen by someone after the command was run. Are there any shells/terminals for Ubuntu that I could use (or options to bash/zsh/etc) that would give me a secure environment where I don't have to worry about my history being kept?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI want to learn using SSH (Secure Shell) service in linux and connect to SSH server with PuTTY to test some commands, but I have not worked with it yet;
I have Ubuntu 9.04 on my "Virtual Machine" and my host OS is Win.XP and I have installed "OpenSSH server" and "PuTTY" from the ubuntu repository,
Is this action rational? I mean I want to connect from PuTTY on linux(on VM) to the SSH Server on linux?
(Meanwhile, I have no work with the host Windows and just wanna test it on the linux!)
where should I see the "Host Name/Ip Address" of the SSH Server to enter in the PuTTy's dialog? In windows we can use "ipconfig" command to see the IP Addresses, but I don't know what is the command in linx for this purpose?
use SSH Service in ubuntu correctly
I was planning on using my VPS to grant some of my friends shells. The problem though is that I don't want them doing crazy stuff on it, like using up all my RAM or disk space. I would like to limit them to a very small 25 mb disk space, and allow them only certain application in /usr/bin like python perl irssi screen etc. I do NOT want them to be able to cd out of their home directory. I really want this to be setup like the shell provider SHellium. I can setup the FTP and SSH stuff myself.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI used to be able to connect to my uni secure access vpn by navigating to the appropriate page, logging in and clicking "start" by "Network Connect" etc. etc.
After an update to firefox it had been failing, giving me a "session timeout" MsgBox. I have tried clearing history etc and reinstalling firefox. I have also tried different browsers with no success.
So, I have since upgraded to 9.10 and now I get "Setup Failed, Sorry" in the bottom left of the screen (where "Done" is displayed once a page has loaded)...
I am now trying a different approach. I have downloaded ncui-6.5R2.i386.rpm and unpacked it fine. I have tried running it, without success and have also run the diagnostic - I will post results below:
When I try and run ./ncsvc I get the following:
Code:
ncsvc> Failed to setuid to root. Error 1: Operation not permitted
So I did a sudo ./ncsvc , which gives:
Code:
mkdir(/root/.juniper_networks) failed: Permission denied
I am pretty sure that my password above is correct - I re-tried it and got the same message... I can definitely do, e.g., sudo apt-get update fine.
I then ran all of the tests available in ncdiag (./ncdiag -A) which gave the following info which might be useful
Code:
NC Diagnostics for Linux.
Version 1.0.
Release Date/Time: Dec 9 2009 04:36:09

I was wondering how safe is to use rdp to access my linux box. I am a little bit concerning about this issue because as I read on opensuse's web site rdp is "less" secure. The thing is that I do not know how much less is this "less"
View 6 Replies View RelatedMy better half spilled some coffee on her 8month old macbook and it decided not to work anymore. Apple says it will cost around $800 or more to fix, we wont be paying that, Ill be finding a logic board or service somewhere online now that our warranty is shot and going that route. But before I send the macbook off anywhere I need to pull some data off the HDD. I was able to plug the HDD into my Linux box(internally, I dont have an external enclosure). I was able to mount the drive and copy the directories I wanted to the HDD on my linuxbox.
But Im unable to to access the directory from the terminal or from the file browser, I get an access denied message. Because I know the username and password for the macbook is there a way I can use that to gain access to the directories?Google got me this far, but when I googled "access locked directory ubuntu" or any variation of that with the terms linux and osx thrown in there for good measure.
I'm running a server using ubuntu 10.04 x64. I want to disable access of groups to "bin" folder so they cannot execute commands.
[info: actually because of a bug in cPanel (the control panel I installed) Perl will give access to all hosting users to execute commands.]
So what I wanna do is to ban some groups on 'bin' folder, for example 'my_group1' and 'my_group2" cannot access bin but 'my_trusted_group' can access it. How is it possible?
They are running Kubuntu. How to access their desktop from my home or office using Internet. Logically I remembered about kfrb and X11-vnc. But both of them need some approach to provide security. I'd like if someone could give me some pieces of advice on choosing the simplest and better approach:
To secure kfrb or x11-vnc is simpler or better to mount a vpn or to use an ssh tunnel? Is there any other solution? My pearents ISP use DHCP, so I think it would require some service like dyndns or similar...
I would like to be able to access my data file that reside on my Linux machine at home from the Internet but I don't want to open any "doors" for lack of a better word that will compromise the security of my files. I am running F11 and I am using cable broadband and a Linksys router.I have been able to get ssh working with OpenSSH while I am at home but I don't really need or want to ssh remotely, I would rather setup what I think is called an ftp. I just want to be able to up and download files to my Linux machine.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI was running a 2-partition hard drive, Windows Vista (lamentably) on one partition, and the other running Ubuntu. I began having trouble with the Vista partition, so I attempted to move as many of the files that I really wanted to keep as possible over to the Ubuntu partition, and then reformat and reinstall the Vista partition. As a result, I could no longer boot to Ubuntu, and I consistently got errors back from everything that I tried on the Vista partition.
The only way that I can now access anything on the hard drive is to insert the Ubuntu install disk, go into trial mode, then mount the partition. At long last, here is the problem: Is there anyway to possibly make the partition bootable again so that I could burn the files to a disk? From trial mode I can get to a number of the files on the mounted partition, HOWEVER, they are secured with the username and password of my user account on that partition. Is there any way that I can access the files from the trial mode by entering my username/password?
I am facing a problem concerning secure websites where I get the "Connection Reset" error in browser after a timeout of I think 1 minute.
OS: Fedora 14 ( I faced same problem with Ubuntu 10.10 )Browsers: Chrome and Firefox
The issue is not there on Windows using Chrome and Firefox so I believe this is a problem with how linux manages secure connections. I can access all the google secure websites too. There a few other websites apart from facebook.com that I know which I am unable to access.
I first tried to use UBCD HDDErase although it won't detect my seagate 1000 GB Sata HD (This worked for my other computer/HD). So I loaded up a OpenSUSE live cd rescue terminal to enter the command (of course after setting a password and making sure HD is not frozen):
time hdparm --user-master u --security-erase uber /dev/sda
The following line appears:
"Issuing SECURITY_ERASE Command, password="uber", user=user
That's all it says and there is no % completed or anything. (as it appears on the wiki)
https://ata.wiki.kernel.org/index.php/ATA_Secure_Erase
Also I can still type but theres no command or console or anything it just is blank if I hit enter. Is my HD being wiped right now? or is it not working?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm an Oracle DBA and started working for my current employer about 4 months ago. This past weekend an alert re: FS space brought my attention to /var/spool/clientmqueue (full of mail re: cron jobs) and the fact that sendmail is not running on our Linux servers.I'm told that the IT security team deemed sendmail too vulnerable so we don't run it.Aside from FS filling up and missing notification of issues with crontab entries, I'm concerned that we may be missing notification of potential issues. In other Unix/Linux environments I've seen emails from the print daemon when it experienced problems with specific jobs.
Are there other Linux facilities aside from cron and lpd that use email to advise the users of possible issues? Are there ways to secure sendmail or secure alternatives to sendmail? My primary need/desire is to make sure that emails regarding issues on the server get to the appropriate users. Secondary goal would be to have the ability to use mailx to send mail out. There is No need/desire to receive mail from outside.
I installed the Berkeley DB on the Ubuntu server and tried to access the dbxml from the command line and it returns command not found

Incoming server (POP3): 995 - (requires with SSL)

And the mail server requires user ID login and password.how do I setup a text command based email client in my Linux (Centos 5.1) to send out email through the existing email server above, which is in another machine? The email client has to be text command based because I need to use command line to send notification email from anothar application installed in my Linux (Centos 5.1) Since the email client will only be used to send email notification, I don't require setting up of an email server in my linux.

I have a users, that log in from a terminal. They should not have any shell access, so currently their login script, at the end, starts the program that they use, and after that program ends, the login script moves on to log them back out. The problem is, they could press ctrl+c, while the login script is running, and it quits the login script and spits them out at a shell prompt. -- Is there any way I can prevent this?

1. Secure
2. Per user backups
3. Windows/Linux compatible ( server will be Linux only )

1. Rsync
Things I can not do :
1. Give out shell access ( forget rsync -e ssh )
2. Use a protocol that takes too many ports ( my box is behind my router ).
Im trying to find out if my computer is whats got my power bill so high. Im not sure it is, but Id like to know if there is a shell command to monitor my power use.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI was using windows recently and noticed that in their command line, the autocomplete is in some ways a little more intelligent (although based on my short experience ours is more robust); for example, if you have a directory named blah and a file name bl, in Linux "cd bl <tab>" will result in "cd bl" while in Windows I get "cd blah" because it recognizes that blah and not bl is the appropriate argument to cd. Similarly unrar will target rar files first.I am not saying Windows command line is better; Windows command line is in general a piece of junk.
View 2 Replies View RelatedHow can I open a script in a shell (konsole/terminal) with one command?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI was trying to write a script, but for some reason I can't test two variables using -gt:
a=`expr $currentSize + 0`
b=`expr $fileSize + 0`
[$a -gt $b]
this is what I get:
[22234534: not found
what is the problem? It seems like I can't check if a variable is greater than another but only if a variable is greater than a fixed number. Is that so? By the way the variables $fileSize and $currentSize exist and $a and $b have a value.
How do i find out if a particular item is a file or a folder through the terminal ls -la gives 'd' before the permissions for every folder and '-' before every fileLike i want to write a script that backup data if it is a folder and deletes if it is a file
