General :: Use SSH (Secure Shell) Service?
Jun 11, 2010I want to learn using SSH (Secure Shell) service in linux and connect to SSH server with PuTTY to test some commands, but I have not worked with it yet;
I have Ubuntu 9.04 on my "Virtual Machine" and my host OS is Win.XP and I have installed "OpenSSH server" and "PuTTY" from the ubuntu repository,
Is this action rational? I mean I want to connect from PuTTY on linux(on VM) to the SSH Server on linux?
(Meanwhile, I have no work with the host Windows and just wanna test it on the linux!)
where should I see the "Host Name/Ip Address" of the SSH Server to enter in the PuTTy's dialog? In windows we can use "ipconfig" command to see the IP Addresses, but I don't know what is the command in linx for this purpose?

Mar 19, 2010i have an issue due to some high security requirements. what i want to do is to remove the files in trash folder permanently from the memory so that they cannot be recovered again. am aware of the "shred" command but i dont know if it can reach to files that are already in trash.I have found a solution but it requires to fill the whole unused memory with a file that consist of some ramdom bits and than deletes it:
dd if=/dev/zero of=zero.small.file bs=1024 count=102400
shred -z zero.small.file
cat /dev/zero > zero.file

General :: Secure Shell/terminal For Ubuntu?
Jul 22, 2010There are a couple commands I want to run in a terminal that require me to provide my password. I really don't want those commands ending up in any kind of history or anywhere else where they could be seen by someone after the command was run. Are there any shells/terminals for Ubuntu that I could use (or options to bash/zsh/etc) that would give me a secure environment where I don't have to worry about my history being kept?

Feb 25, 2010I was planning on using my VPS to grant some of my friends shells. The problem though is that I don't want them doing crazy stuff on it, like using up all my RAM or disk space. I would like to limit them to a very small 25 mb disk space, and allow them only certain application in /usr/bin like python perl irssi screen etc. I do NOT want them to be able to cd out of their home directory. I really want this to be setup like the shell provider SHellium. I can setup the FTP and SSH stuff myself.

Security :: Ways To Secure Sendmail Or Secure Alternatives To Send Mail
Dec 1, 2010I'm an Oracle DBA and started working for my current employer about 4 months ago. This past weekend an alert re: FS space brought my attention to /var/spool/clientmqueue (full of mail re: cron jobs) and the fact that sendmail is not running on our Linux servers.I'm told that the IT security team deemed sendmail too vulnerable so we don't run it.Aside from FS filling up and missing notification of issues with crontab entries, I'm concerned that we may be missing notification of potential issues. In other Unix/Linux environments I've seen emails from the print daemon when it experienced problems with specific jobs.
Are there other Linux facilities aside from cron and lpd that use email to advise the users of possible issues? Are there ways to secure sendmail or secure alternatives to sendmail? My primary need/desire is to make sure that emails regarding issues on the server get to the appropriate users. Secondary goal would be to have the ability to use mailx to send mail out. There is No need/desire to receive mail from outside.

Jan 14, 2010I bought this laptop several years ago. It had Vista. Just long enough for me to download SUSe, nuke and pave the HD and install Linux. Recently I upgraded from 1 GB to 4 GB of RAM, the maximum that is allowed given the motherboard (based on from what I am able to learn the Intel 945 chipset).
After upgrading to 4 GB, the machine (according to "My Computer") only sees 2.9 GB. I understand that under an earlier version of the BIOS that the machine would not recognize the RAM correctly. Additionally the "My Computer" page lists the display as "Intel 945GM". My problem is that I can find no Linux utility to flash the BIOS on this machine-- Toshiba only provides the BIOS included in an .exe file for either XP or Vista. I am hesitant to use the BIOS for the Intel 945 series motherboards from their site.

However I noticed, also, that you can perfectly use them even with Windows Vista. What I'd like to know is if you can use them even with Suse/Novell and (why not?) OpenSuse Linux.

Jun 30, 2010I am new to Linux and wow, it did not take me long to run into a huge snag. I am running Suse Linux Enterprise 10 on a laptop and by some strange reason the computer froze from overheating and I was forced to shutdown improperly. Once I restarted it booted right to the command prompt when it usually instead boots to the default user. I managed to get gnome running using the "startx gnome" command. But when gnome loads, none of my normal extentions load like my wireless driver, the sound driver, etc. how to restore gnome to automatically load the default user on start up or fix any other damage I might have done? lol
