I had Windows, and decided to Instal Ubuntu over it, so Windows was gone. Then, on another partition, I instaled Windows. I was expecting to be asked on start up which operating system to run, but this does not happen, presumably because they are in different partition. Each time I turn my computer on, Windows comes up.. How do I get into Ubuntu? I am well aware this is potentially a dumb question by the way.
View 1 RepliesI have downloaded new version 10.4 of Ubuntu and burn it on CD with power iso, gave it a try to install but after it started from cd and waited to load an error pop up and says it can not install from cd ...then i tried to start live cd and it started Ok with no problem. In live cd mode i tried install again and started well ,1to4 step ok, then at 4 step when it comes to HDD and partitions the window to choose from is blank. No HDD no partitions. but interesting is that in this Os it has partitioning tool in system tools GParted, and whit it i can see my HDD and partitions, even tried format with it a partition for Ubuntu then tried install but problem is the same = blank step 4,.. so on my pc i can not install 10.4

i decided to build a home server on an AMD64 (buyed some years ago) for file storage, printer sharing and something else... I've searched a lot for "the best distros for server" and discarding extreme solution (like command line only) what remains is: Ubuntu, Fedora and Debian
Now the problem: how to install more than one distros on the same hdd? what i know is that i need a bootloader (grub/lilo) and partitions for boot,swap, and remaining space will be split for the distro itself.
I think is a good idea to have a partition only for files (/data) that all distros can access, but for sure i'd like to have one /root and one /home partitions each distro!
I can't understand if the correct way is first of all to install a distro (let's say ubuntu), then set up everything such as partitions and bootloader and then install other distros. I'd like to know if it is possible to manage dinamycally the space reserved for distros, so i'll be able to install 2,3,4,5...distros with no problems.
I want to mount partitions automatically after starting computer...currently i hav to click on the partitions and mount them.

I used Ubuntu before, without problems but since the 10.04 version it won't recognize my partitions. I formated my laptop and partitioned it, installed Windows 7 64bit, which I need for my work, and wanted now to install Ubuntu 10.04/10. I then used GParted to check my Harddisk and it is having troubles to recognize my partitions, too while Windows finds them. GParted is giving me an error message saying my partitions are oversized. Xubuntu 9.04 installation CD not detecting any of the current partitions. This all started when I reinstalled windows XP a few days ago.After, the computer wouldn't boot into GRUB and would boot directly into windows.Other threads have dealt with a similar issue, that of overlapping partitions causing libparted/parted/gparted to detect the whole drive as unallocated space. The problem in these threads seemed to be a corrupted partition table, in which the partitions overlapped with each other. So of course I checked the output of fdisk -l for overlapping partitions, but I don't see any obvious overlapping partitions. I've noticed that the partition that used to be linux swap isn't showing up in the partition table at all. I might just be missing something simple here and would like another set of eyes to help me figure this one out. Does the problem have anything to do with the partition table being out of order (ie. not in order of what regions they cover on the drive)? From the liveCD I've run

I am installing Ubuntu on the same hard drive as Windows 7. The partitions of Windows 7 have already occupied the left part of the hard drive. From left to right, the Windows partitions are one partition for Windows booting, one for Windows OS and software installation, and one for data which is planned to mount on Ubuntu. I was wondering how to arrange the order of partitions of root, home and swap, i.e. which is on the left just besides one Windows partition, which is in the middle and which is on the far right?

I tried Ext2fsd but the linux partition is always in a read only mood even when i change this option. Also, all folders are empty I downloaded the program as admin and compatable with XP SP2.

I decided to install Linux Mint.Sadly, in all my noobishness, I forgot about the 4 primary partition limit (oops!) and as I have /, /home, swap, and /boot partitions (all primary) already installed, I have run into a bit of a problem.I resized my /home partition (almost 500GB) to about 225, and was then told I have over 200GB unusable space. Is it possible for me to change at least 1 of my primary partitions to logical partitions AND keep all the data intact (AND edit the arch configuration so that it'll still work) so I can install a second linux? I installed OS11.4 on my old laptop, Compaq Armada E500., 512MB RAM, ATI Rage Mobility. During installation I chose "minimal server" and added some development packages, lxde and a little more. I chose to start in runlevel 3 which is full networking without X. Still, when computer is booted it tries to start Xorg which doesn't work because of some problem w driver. The start-up seems to stop there, it never loads completely - seems most things in runlevel 3 are not started (see below) I can manually login on laptop and fix it - but never permanently, same thing again after reboot.
I have checked /etc/inittab & yast - both states default runlevel is 3. I have checked services to be started both directly, browsing directory /etc/rc.d/rc3.d/, and with YaST, it is very clear X should not load during boot. But, as said, it does.. I don't really care about the driver problem right now, I can fix that later when I have more time. So how do I stop X from getting started automatically?
More info, if needed: The installation also stopped with message on tty1 "Starting YaST2" and tty8 showing errors with graphics driver (mach64). The system seemed to be installed though, so I simply rebooted (issuing "reboot" from tty2).

I'm not completely sure where it stops, network is configured but keyboard is wrong and mysql & everything after is not started, so somewhere between S02network and S06kbd. I'm going to use it as a server for testing purposes so no X is actually needed - however I do want to have X & lxde installed just in case, my Internet connection at home is terribly slow so I need most things I might need in the future installed today.
When we install a linux OS, we've an option to create partitions. In my laptop I've create partition for /opt, /home, / and /tmp. Are these partitions the same type of partitions as the partitions created by LVM?

1. 1 TB 16 mb cache; or
2. 1 TB 64 mb cache
Also should I format the drive ext4 or ext3?
If I install "kde standard" form synaptic package manager, i will be able to choose kde at login. Is my understanding of this correct?

If I insert an Audio CD into my CD/DVD Writer, I cannot choose an application. So I launched Nautilus and chose Edit>Preferences>Media. Here's the problem. All options under Media Handling are grayed out and show "No application found" except for Software.Why can I not select any applications for CD Audio, DVD Video, Music Player, or Photos?I use Ubuntu 10.10 x64.

However, on startup, my monitor displays "Video Mode Not Supported" which I assume is the Grub2 interface to choose my OS. Unfortunately, it keeps booting into Ubuntu, and I cannot change it. So, through the command line, I made the default OS on startup windows xp. But now I don't know know how to change back... View 5 Replies View RelatedI have three routers (linksys wrt54gl, ddwrt). I'm trying to use wds bridging, got two of them linked, but not the third. All three routers have the same SSID. I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 netbook remix.
My problem is I need to choose which of these my laptop connects to. Right now it connects to the one router which isn't playing nice with wds. I need it to connect to one of my other routers. I see the other signals using nm-tool, but they don't show in nm-applet. I created a connection in NetworkManager specifying the SSID + mac address of the correct router, but the tray applet doesn't show any options for connecting to manually configured networks, and I can't find any other useful app. I suppose I could rtfm for iwconfig et al, but Ubuntu ought to have an easier way.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI am currently using Ubuntu Lucid on my desktop (stats are in my signature). I have an older computer, with an Intel i8xx chipset as my graphics card. This has had some instabilities on the previous two Ubuntu releases for me (10.04 and 9.10) which I am hoping will be fixed for Maverick, but thankfully the Ubuntu Wiki managed to provide me with fixes.
After much tweaking and some luck, I was able to get Ubuntu to work without constantly crashing on kernel versions 2.6.32-21, 2.6.32-22 and 2.6.32-23. Unfortunately, when 2.6.32-24 and 2.6.32-25 came out, I was unable to cease the crashes.
While I am still looking into tweaking the latest kernel version to work perfectly, I would like to know if there was a way for Ubuntu to default boot into a kernel other than the latest. This is because I want to run 2.6.32-23 by default (the latest kernel that I have tweaked properly) until I can configure 2.6.32-24 and 2.6.32-25 as well. I have less computer-savvy family members that use my desktop as well, and it would be a pain for them to have to press shift at every boot and have to select the correct kernel.
