Is there any way to find out the space consumed by a particular application??
AFAIK,applications installation are distributed across various directories in Linux(man pages, executable files,etc..)and the very close i can get is to run 'whereis' command which gives me all the paths where the application's files are stored.
Do i have to manually go to each and every such paths and check their sizes??

I'm trying to copy all my photos from a windows drive to my Linux partition. So i created this small one-liner:
[code]...
the output from find has no space esc-character, i.e. /path/sub folder should be /path/sub folder.

My ubuntu server is a 1.5T with 448GB available. When I backup my files each night, my files only amount to 397GB. Is there an easy way to see where the extra 600 GB on my server is located? I think that I might have had a couple of old backups write to the server, but I cannot find them.

I have a linux server top reports about 9GB of swap used:But I cannot figure where's it use swap, some google results said that top - O commad follow by p will show swap usage by process. But as shown in the above image, taking a brief sum of the SWAP column shows that > 10GB of swap is used, so where does the 9GB figure for swap usage come from? Top reports that about 96492kb of ram is used by buffers. Is there anything I can do to utilize this, instead of using swap?

I am trying to edit a large bunch of files. Each file has four columns and I want to get rid of the first one, but in each line the number of the first column changes. the number in the first column ranges from 1 digit to 5. For example
1 aaaaa bbbbbb ccccc
23 aaaaa bbbbbb ccccc
15343 aaaaa bbbbbb ccccc
and the desired format would be
aaaaa bbbbbb ccccc
aaaaa bbbbbb ccccc
aaaaa bbbbbb ccccc

Logical Memory Space of 4GB is divided in to 3GB User Space and 1GB Kernel Space. Always. Correct?
1. How can we change it? (just changing value of PAGE_OFFSET is okay?)
2. If system have only 256MB of memory (embedded system) and suppose Kernel Modules eat away all the memory during boot. User space will be left will no memory. Is this case possible?

We have recently built some RAC (OS:RHEL55) servers and after the Oracle guys have installed their application, somehow the directory / is using the maximum space. I contacted the Oracle team & they say that their RAC installation doesn't create any files in the / directory. This is the o/p of '/' directory file system:
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/mapper/datavg-vol2 498M 382M 62M 88% /
Also, when I checked the file sizes, I found that the following files were taking more space:
/etc/selinux/targeted/modules/active/
-rw------ 1 root root 17M Nov1 base.linked
[code].....
I don't know what these files are doing there, when I did a cat and cheked, I found the files containing this data:
nf_tre--
stem_dbusd_var_run_t...and some stuff like this Unable to decide whether or not to remove these files. Also, is there any way to find out what files are taking more space and whether they can be deleted or not? in order to free up some space in the / direcoty. As there are 10 RACs that we've build, I got to do something to fix this for all of the 10 servers.

While installing slackware64-current, setup cannot find swap space. This is an extreme case pushing limits with a huge GPT partition table. So there is probably some limit on the number of partitions, or partition number, the swap search looks for. Of 41 partitions I made scattered around the number range from 1 to 128, the swap space exists as partition 90. Maybe the problem is it can only check partitions 1-15 because 16 and beyond have to use a different device major number? When I do proceed with the install, /dev/sda90 is listed as a choice. FYI, so many partitions is planning ahead for a multi-boot system. The rest of the install went OK.

I want to find all users shown in the /home/ directory whose disk consumption is more than 500MB. The following command works as expected.
cd /home/ && du */ -hs
68K ajay/
902M john/
250M websites/
From the above example, only 902M john/ should be returned.
How can I make the find command output the same results?

I am developing a I2C CDROM client driver. The CDROM firmware supports TOC information read through a I2C command. It sends the TOC information in burst ( Interrupts a GPIO pin when it is ready ) and my CPU does a I2C read to read the TOC. When the CDROM firmware finishes sending the last data burst , it informs my CPU that it is done with the TOC, by a flag in the last data burst. I would like to know, which is the most efficinet way I can send these TOC information to userspace?

I wanna write a file in kernel space but from my searching I can to know that instead of writeing file in kernel space ,I can write data to user space by copy_to_user space.
But link is missing ...I dont know how will my user space will access kernel space means my function in kernel space which will do copy_to_user /....How my user space function will call my kernel level function ..
Can any one of you provide me with some example file which are doing this .I know every char driver is using it ...but i could not trace back how user level function is accessing it ...i m confused between user space and kernel space.

Today I was installing a lot of software since I'm just setting up my Slackware system again after a fresh install, and I realized that my root partition has very little space left.
Here is the output of df -h:
Code:
As you can see, I have a 20G (19G here for some reason) root partition, 8G /var, and 86G of /home. I thought this would be plenty since many recent recommendations for / are 10-15G. Now, though, 17G are used up for some reason! How is this possible? I thought a full slackware install only had about 4G of software! I don't have any music or movies or any crazy huge files that I know of, and those would be in my /home directory anyway. Is there any way I can see which files are taking up all this space?
If it's necessary to allocate more space to my / partition, is it still possible to boot up a GParted live Cd, shrink /home a bit, move some partitions to the right, and expand my root partition? I would REALLY prefer I don't have to reinstall since I just spent a ton of time setting up my system again, but if worst comes to worst ... :'-(
In case you're curious, here's my /etc/fstab:
Code:
