Ubuntu :: Cannot Access /ect/scalpel/scalpel.conf?
Jun 18, 2011
Why does the following command tell me that the scalpel.conf file doesn't exist ? I know it is there; I can navigate there through the GUI.
testuser@ubuntu:~$ ls -l /ect/scalpel/scalpel.conf ls: cannot access /ect/scalpel/scalpel.conf: No such file or directory testuser@ubuntu:~$

I tried using scalpel to recover some files that i had deleted. It went through the first pass but on the next pass there was an error message saying disk full The next time I tried to boot ubuntu I got a strange screen filled in a very large font and a message in the top corner: The configuration defaults for gnome power manager have not been installed correctlyI do not want to reinstall Karmic Koala as I may lose my email messages and other data.

I have been trying to recover data off an external hard drive using scalpel. I got the files types done set up the external folder and then I go to run the program and I get an error message "ERROR: Couldn't open input file: /dev/sdb -- Permission denied" I tried resetting the permission for the external by right clicking the drive and going through the permission menu but every time the permission reset themselves.

I ran Scalpel to retrieve some files from an old HDD, what I didn't realise is how much larger the output from Scalpel is than the original disk space.
So what happened is at about 5% of files carved (pass 2/2) my disk space was full and the program aborted.
Then when I rebooted Ubuntu I can't get in unless using Recovery Mode.
I think this is because there is no disk space left. The error I get is to do with Gnome Power Manager not being configured, I never had this error before.
So I went into CLI prompt and performed 'find -maxdepth 2 | grep *.mpg' and I can see a tonne of mpg directores called ./~/mpg-1-6, ./~/mpg-1-7, etc, and they all have lots of files.
Now I have no way of deleting these, I tried using 'sudo rmdir */*mpg' and it cannot find the directory.
When I go to my home folder and 'sudo ls -al' these aren't listed.
The only way I can see them is using the 'find' command.
Can I chain the find command with a delete command somehow?

I'm working on a ~1 TB disk that was loaded with all kinds of images and documents that lost it's HFS+ partition table. The person for which I'm doing the favor of running scalpel says it's likely there's 90GB of stuff. Somehow, the disk got relabeled/MBR changed to some FAT variant that works on the whole Terrabyte.
Attempts to recover the partition info failed. My first try with scalpel finds more than 90GB of image file headers alone and that blows through all of my storage. Of the headers found and recovered as images, a simple test shows most of the image files are broken. The cluster size option does not work if I use it by itself. It errors out before it gets going.I want to speed things up and skip the countless broken image files.

I've been scanning the apache2 docs for the past few days and have not come up with an answer my following issue:
In my httpd.conf file, at the very end, I have the line
Include conf/vhosts/vhost_*.conf
However, when I run apache checkconfig or try to start apache, it gives me the error:
httpd: Syntax error on line 993 of /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf: Could not open configuration file /etc/httpd/conf/vhosts/vhost_1.conf: Permission denied
It appears as if the Include line is correct - in terms of it grabbing the first virtual host conf file. However, I'm confused on the permissions. the /etc/httpd folder is owned by root:root, as are the subfolders. As a test, I chown'd the conf/vhost folder combination and all the vhost files to apache:apache to see if that made a difference, and it appeared to make no difference at all. The log files don't contain anything (assumed because apache isn't starting). If I place the contents of the vhosts in a singular vhosts.conf it works - with the permissions set to root:root. I'd like to avoid having to use one vhosts conf for the configuration I'm trying to achieve - as it would make my life a lot easier.

I'm trying to set up samba. I am editing the smb.conf.master file, and then using the testparm -s "smb.conf.master > smb.conf" command to make the smb.conf file. I am running this command as root. However, the smb.conf is not updating with the changes I am making. Does anyone know why? It just stays the same no matter what I change. The only way to change it is to edit the smb.conf file itself.

I have used nVidia my entire linux life (about 5 years clean and sober from M$). Recently, I have switched over to an ATI Radeon HD 5550 card. After many trial and error setups, I finally got the resolutions and screens set properly with a xrandr command, which I have now added to a shell script in ~/.kde4/Autostart. It has worked for me for a while now, but I really would like to get it set in the xorg.conf.d files so that I don't have to wait that extra few seconds after login for the screens to fix themselves.
Is there an easy way to take what xrandr does and export it to the xorg.conf.d files? If my video card recognizes my default monitor as DFP2 and the tv that I only sometimes use with this computer as DFP1, how can I ensure that the login screen for openSUSE/KDE4 appears on my default screen (an issue that drove me nuts a few months ago when I tried Ubuntu to see what all the fuss was about)?
My xrandr command that I use to fix it all is:
xrandr --output DFP2 --auto --pos 0x0 --primary --output DFP1 --auto --right-of
I am using the proprietary Radeon driver from the ioda repository. DFP2 is a monitor which has a optimum resolution of 1920x1200, and DFP1 is an 1080p HDTV. I can not reverse the output plugs for the screens even though my monitor is an HDMI monitor because I use the actual HDMI port on the video card to output audio to the television and the other plug is a DVI that I convert to HDMI for the monitor.

I have installed Kubuntu 8.04.2 on a USB stick with persistence to keep any changes I make after a reboot and it works fine. I then installed the 185 Nvidia driver to give me higher resolutions and it works fine.
But each time I reboot, my updated xorg.conf is replaced with the default xorg.conf that ships with that version of Kubuntu and a backup is made of my updated xorg.conf (the correct one) which looks like xorg.conf.20100409135913. I have to put the backup xorg.conf back in place to get my Nvidia driver to work with the correct screen resolutions again. Otherwise my screen resolution is too low.
What could be causing this behavor? I'm sure it not the persistence feature of the USB stick failing since a backup is made of my original xorg.conf.
I might add more information. The xorg.conf that gets changed after a reboot says "This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using # values from the debconf database." #

I am setting up LDAP server, i set slapd.conf(dc=proldap,dc=com) and start ldap it is OK but when i check using ldapsearch -x -b '' -s base '(objectclass=*)' namingContexts result is : namingContexts: dc=my-domain,dc=com
it seems that it did not use my slapd.conf so i tried removing my slapd.conf from /etc/openldap and start slapd again and it did start with no errors. and when i do ldapsearch again still uses dc=my-domain,dc=com
I tried searching about this in google and found no answers,
my reference in setting up ldap is the link below. but it seemed that it always uses another configuration not the one i modified
I'm using Fedora12, ldap version 2.4.19. i installed ldap by yum install url

I've read the how-tos (thank you oldcpu!) and wikis about how xorg.conf take precedence over the section configuration files in etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/, if it exist. I also understand that the xorg.conf can be partial. If it is missing some sections, these will be taken from the corresponding xorg.conf.d section config file. Currently I'm using a xorg.conf generated by nvidia-settings in one of my home machines, due to a dual-monitor setup. After generating xorg.conf, the device sections are:
in xorg.conf:
Code:
Section "Device"
Identifier "Device0"
Driver "nvidia"
[code]....
My question is if the Option "UseCompositeWrapper" "True" will be used or not. In other words, if a section exist in xorg.conf then it's correspondent in xorg.conf.d/ will be completely ignored *or* only the lines in xorg.conf.d/ that already exist in xorg.conf will be ignored?

I have LDAP authentication working via SSSD using authconfig-tui and a few minor modifications to sssd.conf (ie: max_id etc). The problem I am having is it would appear /etc/ldap.conf is being ignored and/or setups that work perfectly on RHEL5, F11 and F12 no longer work on F13. Specifically Im referring to "pam_check_host_attr" and "nss_map_attribute". It refuses to honor either of these options and I can only assume a number of the other options in our ldap.conf. For instance, "nss_map_attribute" is defaulting to the standard "homeDirectory" rather than "homeDirectoryLinux". This is related to a bunch of OSX clients we have and its not optional to use another setup. The host restriction is also a major issue.
Relevant sssd.conf:
[domain/default]
auth_provider = ldap
cache_credentials = True

can anyone tell me what is the difference between these two files of LDAP client /etc/ldap.conf and /etc/ldap/ldap.conf and for what purposes these two files gives services. Is it necessary to have these two files at a time ?
I use these files to install LDAP client to authenticate with our LDAP server by creating a symbolic link of /etc/ldap.conf to /etc/ldap/ldap.conf.

I'm having a problem with my webdav share. I have a secure webdav folder that gets accessed via a non-standard port and requires basic authentication. I can connect and interact with it fine via cadaver. However, when I try to connect from nautilus, it says "Access was denied." To make it even stranger, sometimes I can click on the folder in nautilus (it still mounts) and access it. Sometimes not (just repeats the error message and won't show me the contents). I may not even un-mount it, but just look at other folder, then click it again and be able to access it, but again - only rarely.
I asked a friend to try connecting from his windows vista computer and it would not work. It would not work from my windows XP virtual computer either. However, it mounts and works just find from my work computer (also Windows XP).
So it seems to be a 50/50 chance that the drive will mount on any given computer/system and work. Do anyone know what the problem may be? I'm guessing user permissions, but I can't figure out what.
I've made sure the webdav folder is owned by www-data and www-data has read access to the password file as well.
When I try connecting from nautilus, I get this in the log file:
Code:
Here is one of the (many) sites I've tried looking at: [url]

I managed to configure my W890i phone to get access to internet through an ubuntu-based computer. It's very easy to use the phone to give internet access to the computer, but the opposite is quite more tricky. For that I've done the following
----On the phone---
-Set the USB network option to "through computer", so that the phone uses the computer's internet connection and not the opposite.
-Decide and set "Shared Network" parameters: user, pasword and workgroup.
-In "conectivity-> internet connection" set "allow local network" to "yes"
----On Ubuntu 10.04---
-Install samba, samba-client, smbfs, smbclient, firestarter and dhcp3-server
-Configure Samba (System-> Administration-> Shared folders): same workgroup as in the phone, add new user (the phone), passwd this new user. In my case the user was called "w890i" and the password given was the same.
-Once the phone is connected to the computer through USB (then select "phone mode"), a new connection appears in NetworkManager: usb0.The aim is to create a shared network that gives internet access to this device. Edit the IPv4 parameters of this new connection, set them to Manual and give an IP adress (192.168.0.1) and a subnet mask (255.255.255.0); the rest of the fields are left empty.Connect this network.
-Set firestarter to use dhcp3: sudo ln -sf /etc/init.d/dhcp3-server /etc/init.d/dhcpd
-Launch firestarter and follow the wizard. Set "allow internet shared connection", choose the device for the primary internet access, and then the device for the shared network (usb0). Then change the settings for firestarter: activate DHCP for local network, set IP to the one we gave before (192.168.0.1).
-Open dhcp3-server config file sudo gedit /etc/default/dhcp3-server And set INTERFACES="usb0"
-Set the policies of firestarter: in incoming connections, allow connections from the IP adress given to the phone (192.168.0.1). Then add rules for the ports that need to be open for this connection. I opened HTTP, HTTPS, SMB, SMTP, POP3, IMAP, IMAPS, DHCP for all the connections in the local network.
-Apply policies and start the firewall.
------------
After all this, the phone can access the internet through the computer. Two problems appeared:
1. I couldn't get access to https sites, like webmails. The phone gave a "communication error". But then I tried with Opera instead of the browser built in the phone's firmware, and I could finally get to https sites.
2. I couldn't retrieve mail, neither POP nor IMAP nor IMAPS. I thought it was a firmware problem again, and I tried out several mobile phone email clients written in java, but none of them worked.
So this is at the moment the problem. If I connect from the phone to the internet directly through 3G, the email clients work for all my accounts. I don't think it's a firewall problem, because the ports are opened for this connection

I'm running ubuntu 9.10, and created a softraid5 with no problems. Now i need it to automount with user read/write access, and i need to make some network share folders. My fstab has the following line for the raid:
Code:
/dev/md0 /media/raid auto rw,user,auto,exec 0 0
After i mounted it, i changed the permission with:
Code:
sudo chmod 777 /media/raid/
So now i can create folders and files on it.
Then i created some shares, one with guest access and other with no guest access.
Now the questions:
1) If i access the guest shared folder via WinXP, i create files and folders, but they appear locked on ubuntu, so i cant access them until i change the permissions. If i go to proprieties/Permissions, the owner is "nobody".
2) What password do i need to use on WinXP, and i try to access the non-guest shared folded? Do i need to create a user just for that?
