I have been trying to recover data off an external hard drive using scalpel. I got the files types done set up the external folder and then I go to run the program and I get an error message "ERROR: Couldn't open input file: /dev/sdb -- Permission denied" I tried resetting the permission for the external by right clicking the drive and going through the permission menu but every time the permission reset themselves.

I have a secondary drive for storage (local drive) which I want to give a regular user rwx rights, but so far unable to... I've tried (all this is at the root level of the drive) chmod -R ugo+rwx /media/share no errors here, but still unable to create a file/folder even tried chown -R user /media/share

Im trying to run Wow with Wine , But its telling me i need to give to the wow folder write access , so im right clicking on the folder , then Permissions , And it has create or delete folder already on , but right below im selecting Read and Write but it doesnt let me do it :/ just goes back to blank .

But on my own setup, I need to set the same folder to drwx--x-wx. Inside the folder, I have a index.php that runs just by setting rwx--x--x but on my own setup, I need to allow read permission for others/group before it can run: rwxr-xr-x (or else I get a blank page). I tried changing the folder and files to root but it's the same.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm having trouble breaking down permissions in linux. Here's the scenario. I have two users: UserA & UserB with each having to ownership and access to directories myDirA and myDirB respectively.
UserA --> /source/myDirA
UserB --> /source/myDirB
I need to set the permissions so that userA can access myDirA and myDirB. There are other users and directories but they should not be able to view outside of their own directories (which is the way it is now). I don't have groups set up for them and I'd rather not change anything else but just the permissions.

They're read/write/exec permissions are identical.
I ran Scalpel to retrieve some files from an old HDD, what I didn't realise is how much larger the output from Scalpel is than the original disk space.
So what happened is at about 5% of files carved (pass 2/2) my disk space was full and the program aborted.
Then when I rebooted Ubuntu I can't get in unless using Recovery Mode.
I think this is because there is no disk space left. The error I get is to do with Gnome Power Manager not being configured, I never had this error before.
So I went into CLI prompt and performed 'find -maxdepth 2 | grep *.mpg' and I can see a tonne of mpg directores called ./~/mpg-1-6, ./~/mpg-1-7, etc, and they all have lots of files.
Now I have no way of deleting these, I tried using 'sudo rmdir */*mpg' and it cannot find the directory.
When I go to my home folder and 'sudo ls -al' these aren't listed.
The only way I can see them is using the 'find' command.
Can I chain the find command with a delete command somehow?
How can I recover My deleted files in ubuntu? What's the difference between "foremost" and "scalpel"? And is there any other program(or package?) For this purpose in ubuntu? I am running ubuntu 9.10
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm working on a ~1 TB disk that was loaded with all kinds of images and documents that lost it's HFS+ partition table. The person for which I'm doing the favor of running scalpel says it's likely there's 90GB of stuff. Somehow, the disk got relabeled/MBR changed to some FAT variant that works on the whole Terrabyte.
Attempts to recover the partition info failed.My first try with scalpel finds more than 90GB of image file headers alone and that blows through all of my storage. Of the headers found and recovered as images, a simple test shows most of the image files are broken. The cluster size option does not work if I use it by itself. It errors out before it gets going.I want to speed things up and skip the countless broken image files.
As it says in the title I need to use the scalpel file recovery tool, or something similar to be able to recover a lost mysql storage folder.. The system crashed, and I really need these files as fast as possible. Share this folder, then followed by 2.allow others to create and delete files in this folder3. guest access.Now if someone in my local network edit any file and save it, it gets locked. if some one copy their file in this folder the permission is marked as "no group" "no owner". and they get unaccessible to me. i tried doing chown <user> <folder> but it says Operation not permitted. View 1 Replies View RelatedI have just installed 9.10 netbook remix onto my Eeepc 901. I was previously using 9.4 Rather than clicking on shutdown icons, or going through shutdown menus, I added a keyboard shortcut to run a shell script containing the following code:

because init needs to be run as root to have the correct permissions, I set the owner and group to be root , ran chmod 711, then chmod u+s to prevent anyone altering the script, and to allow anyone to execute it with root privelidges Since updateing to 9.10 netbook remix, I have been unable to get this to work. have applied the above changes but get a "/bin/bash: /usr/bin/shutdownscript: permission denied" error when I try to run my shutdown script from the terminal (nothing happens when I press the key combination asigned to the keyboard shortcut). If I run the shutdown script with sudo then it neatly shuts down. ls reveals the following permissions:-rws--s--x 1 root root
So it appears as if SUID and SGID are both set, and the owner/group are correct, and the script works, and yet it doesn't have the permissions to work. I installed 9.4 long ago enough that I can't remember if I had to do anything else to get it working, or has something changed between 9.4 and 9.10?
I tried to read the File Permissions page on the wiki and my eyes glazed over after about three sentences. I've got a folder called /var/www/pics that I just want to be able to save image files to. My only other choice as I understand it is to save them to my home folder, then use a "sudo mv" command to copy files to that directory. How do I give my account permissions to save a file in that directory?

Temperature reached is that what cause system halt? Also when I press ctrl+alt+Fn I see blank screen why is that?
I noticed this today for the second or third time since getting 10.04: all my machines are installing security updates automatically, despite the fact that KPackageKit is set to 'only notify about available updates.'
Am I just being stupid, missing a setting somewhere, or is this a bug? Aside from the fact that I like to know what's being installed, I often use my laptop on satellite or other bandwidth-metered connections (as was the case when it happened today), and I don't want the OS to start dictating how much I owe my ISP at the end of the month!
I am using Xampp on ubuntu 10.04 and I have set my document root to a folder in my home directory for ease of use with netbeans. There are several times where I have to manually go and change the permission to 755. If you just place a file in the directory it does not default to 755, seems odd since the document root folder is in my home directory. Chmod works fine but I was wondering is their a way to make all files or folders added to my document root to default to 755?

The key residing in id_rsa.pub has been copied over to the ssh server into the authorized keys of the given user. however When we try to login we get a "permission denied (public key, keyboard-interactive)" error. below is the debug option:

I have a shared directory on another machine but I can't get it to mount. The permission denied doesn't say where/which permission is denied. Is it on the remote on on the local machine? The remote has sharing enabled for the shareddocs directory and after I have mkdir'ed the local mount point I open it's permissions too.
The verbose response from mount.cfis looks like this:

I've been trying to set up a media server using Ubuntu server, following the instructions from [URL]. I am trying to access the server from a windows 7 pro laptop. I can see my media server on the network. I can see the folder vol1 which I want to access, but when I double click on it, I am given an error message saying it is not accessible and I don't have permission to access it. I can access the server using webmin, and I can access its terminal with putty. I just don't know what settings to tweak.

The problem Im having all of a sudden is when I try and copy anything from internal file system, to anything external [phone, card reader, usb hardrive] I get a pop up that says Error opening file '/media/disk/<filename>': Permission denied
Should be a quick fix i would think, what you guys got ???
