I am tying to write a script that asks for user input and saves it to a text file using awk so example #!/bin/bash read a awk #saves to file
I had a working scripted last night, deleted it by mistake and for the life of me can not remember how i did it.
Is there a way to process individual characters one-by-one from a text file in Bash, or is that hoping for a little too much from this lovable old clunker?

For example: I have to write a script to export a full ldap structure, and I'm using the ldapsearch -y passwordfile, where password file is a plain text file that contains the password. Is there a way to hide the password from that file?
I was thinking to remove the r attribute from the file and before the script is lunched to put the attribute back, but is not a good solution, the same with immutable attribute.
I've got a text file with a list of .gz files, these .gz files are in various sub directories of one parent directory and I've hacked this little script together to copy them from their current location to a new one and spit out any it can't find to "/home/user/not_found" but for the life of me can't get it to run properly!

I'm just starting out with shell-scripting, but having a problem with making new text files with the touch or cat > commands.
What I've been doing is touch testfile1.txt
Also, I've tried cat > testfile1.txt (text)
Console reports "bash: text1.txt: No such file or directory. Consfusingly, it works fine in the home-directory. But if I move the file to where I want it, I can no longer view, edit, etc. it.
I have a file called list.txt with on word on each line that changes in length. I'd like to make a menu, each line being its own choice. I pieced together most of it the only thing missing is a failsafe for typing a number out of range

I need to be able to compare a file date with system date and delete files older than 30 days.

of course the extension is the date the file was created.
Oh and before i get hammered I looked everywhere but am unable to make sense of what I found.
Just using shell scripting, how can I insert text into the middle of a file name. The file has a predictable pattern, let's say 3 letters and 3 numbers and I want to insert text in the middle of those 2 patterns. Say ABC123 is the file name. As a result, the file name should be ABC.blah.123

In the other hand, I can copy & paste the two functions at the end of my /etc/bashrc file.... then I can called the function by name.... and the commands within that function run on my session. here is a print of all my bash packets:

in bash scripting...say I want to take the input from a user via a question...I would do this:

The portion of /etc/fstab that uses /dev/shm for the tmpfs partition is:

So, if a user says "24" GB to the answer (from above), how do I get it to automatically add that value to the tmpfs partition line in /etc/fstab? So it would look like:
tmpfs /dev/shm tmpfs size=24g,defaults 0 0
I understand that I would also have to come up with a way to put "size=XXg", which I could do with a copied over generic file before this action...then the script would have to find "XX" and replace it with the user's figure...
I'm writing a script to execute bash commands in the PHP CLI. I would like to suppress errors from bash and write my own error message if an error occurs. So far I have this (assuming log.txt doesn't exist!):

Which works as expected, tac kicks up an error but the error is suppressed, but when I use this:

tac < log.txt 2>/dev/null
I get:

bash: log.txt: No such file or directory
The tac error is suppressed but bash still gives me a dirty error.

Now in my bash script, I want to get the output /home/user instead of $HOME once read. So far, I have managed to get the $HOME variable but I can't get it to echo the variable. All I get is the output $HOME.

I created text for a bunch of "#!/bin/bash" scripts in MS SQL Server. Being on a Windows machine, I used Ultraedit to create text files for a few examples. After copying the files to a machine running Ubuntu 10.10, I changed group and owner, and made them executable. However, they won't execute. I get "file not found" errors. But, if I paste the content into text files created in Ubuntu, it runs fine.

I just set up apache on my PC and I cant change the permissions by right clicking because "I'm not the owner" and instead of using the chmod command on every file that I would like to edit I would just like to write a script on a text file, save it to my desktop so all I have to do is double click on it and boom I can edit all my files, etc.

I need to do some text file manipulation which I think should be done with standard commands in BASH. I'm looking at comma seperated text files (stock market data). It comes in the form of date, stock code, open, high, low, close, volume. What I need to do first is move all data with same stock code sequentially into individual files.
While doing this since the stock code will now be the file name I need to remove the stock code. Next I need to filter out overlapping data from different files with the same date. ie. where two files contain the same date on the one line only one line will be added to the combined file. I think there must be a tutorial out there for basic text manipulation like this, I just haven't found it yet.
