Ubuntu :: Backing Up Files With "invalid Encoding" In The Filename?
May 10, 2010
I wish to install ubuntu 10.04 on my desktop PC, but before I do that I need to back up my HDD. Due to alot of filenames show as having a wrong encoding, ubuntu will not let me copy the files. We are talking hundres of files in many sub folders.
The way I see it, I either have to:
1. have ubuntu back up my files in annother way (and not simply dragging and dropping as I have tried)
2.use some sort of tool to convert/fix the filenames so I wil then be able to back them up.
I've tried the following using convmv as mentioned here, but with no succes.
Code:
convmv -r --notest -f windows-1255 -t UTF-8 *
I'm using a live cd, thus the files are not located in my home folder, but on a separate parrtition.

I've recently switched from Windows to Ubuntu Studio (11.04), and my only remaining problem is the encoding of the file names in my music collection. The music files are on a D-Link DNS-323 NAS, and were put there in Windows. The files with accented characters look like this in the terminal:
04 V? ?kur? ?.m4a
and they look like this in Nautilus: This is the relevant line in my /etc/fstab:
Code:
//192.168.0.6/Volume_1 /media/dns_323 cifs iocharset=utf8,username=admin,password=speaker,file_mode=0777,dir_mode=0777 0 0
Many people seem to have solved this problem by adding the iocharset part, but it isn't working for me. I also tried nls=utf8.I've looked into using convmv to change the file name encoding, but I'm having trouble with that, too. I've read that Windows uses UTF-16, but when I try:[code].....I only half understand any of what I've tried to do,

I am using Debian Lenny 5.0.3 with a stock 2.6.26-2-amd64 kernel, and have a ~/Documents/HTMLS directory of 273.2MB (21590 files, 1063 sub-folders) which according to konqueror shows 1130 items - 572 files (60.8MB Total) - 558 folders, these were created by 'Save Page As' in Iceweasel 3.5.11. I am trying to copy the contents of this directory to a similar directory on a 2GB USB thumbdrive /dev/sdb1 which was partitioned and formatted as fat32 by Qparted. Problem is that the copying ceases after about 6 files transfer. I found that (as I am sure you know) the named.html files come with a matching named_files folder, and often there are what appear to be invalid characters such as '*','?',and ':' in the filenames in said named_files folders.
After exhaustive googling [I know we all say that] I found an instruction:
Code:
pax -rw -s '/[*?:]/_/gp' stuff /fat32/partition
that changes the name of the files, replacing said characters with '_', but whilst I can get pax from my repos, I really don't want to 'archive' the files - since I understand that pax was created to bridge a war between tar and cpio - because I want to be able to read the html files on an old (not connected to the Internet) WinXP tablet. So, I believe that I need to create a script, that scans all the filenames, greps and seds to replace said 'unacceptable' characters. I am assuming that Firefox on the Tablet PC will be able to open the htmls if I can get them onto the thumb drive. Are there any other known characters in filenames that M$ file systems can't handle?

I did a clean install of 10.04 over the weekend and copied all of my backed up files from my external drive back to my internal drive. However, I've noticed that when I moved all my files back, they're all now marked as being executable. I've since fixed this, but I was wondering why this happened to begin with?
I use rsync to backup my files (grsync to be exact), but when I do so I copy files from my internal drive, which is formatted as ext4, to my external drive, which is formatted as NTFS (I keep my external drive as NTFS in case I need to hook it up to a Windows machine). Does the file system discrepancy have to do with why my permissions change when I backup/restore my files? Is there a way to prevent this? Or should I be backing up my files a different way?

I'm trying to convert the encoding of multiple files in a directory and I try to do it as follows.
Code:
#/bin/bash
find . -type f -name *.txt -exec iconv -f GBK -t utf-8 "{}" -o "{}.utf8" ;
find . -type f -name *.utf8 -exec mv -f "{}" `echo "{}" | sed 's/.utf8//'` ;
The first command goes well by generating utf8 files from all txt files, but the second command fails with error message. Could someone enlighten me about the mistake in the command and share a workable solution?

I have been having a problem with K9 Copy whenever I try to convert a DVD to MPEG files using the method without encoding, but for some reason lately it seems to be splitting each episode into about 6 or 7 pieces instead of just one. I never usually have a problem with this, but for some reason it seems to be doing this whenever I try to rip something. On a side note, I am running on Obuntu 9.10 and have K9Copy version 2.3.0 installed. I have tried installing several other versions, but it does the same thing with each.

How can I set a pattern that will output a filename equal to the original filename? E.g.
something.mp3 → something.ogg
And why isn't this implemented in SoundConverter?
PS: {Filename} doesn't work.

Before I used to make a copy of configuration file and give the end of the file name as 'something.conf.bkp' . Later realized it was a mistake. The correct wording should end in .bak and not bkp .
As per (See apt.conf(5) manpage, section DIRECTORIES, last paragraph.)
The Ignore-Files-Silently list can be used to specify which files APT should silently ignore while parsing the files in the fragment directories. Per default a file which end with .disabled, ~, .bak or .dpkg-[a-z]+ is silently ignored. As seen in the last default value these patterns can use regular expression syntax.

How is it possible to add a new hpfs disk with utf16 encoding files system? I would like to add my windows 7 device at the boot beginning automaticly? I could mount in gnome with nautilus with a one mouse click.
Code:
# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# Use 'blkid -o value -s UUID' to print the universally unique identifier
# for a device; this may be used with UUID= as a more robust way to name

I'm currently trying to organize a media server so that things will be in some kind of logical order rather than the current setup of dumping everything of a certain content type into a single folder. However, the size and diversity of content within these disorganized folders precludes me doing things manually. Does anyone know of a program or script that could sort the files into folders based on part of a filename

Is there really no way of having with a GUI an indexed file search by filename (not contents etc) which gives a detailed list? Great big icons as a "result" is no good to me, I want "details" that I can then click on to either open or copy etc. I tried the totally useless "Tracker" and Zeitgeist in my 11.04 is no better. There is a fantastic product in the win environment called everything.exe which does exactly what I want. I cannot be alone in this type of requirement. It has to have a GUI.

I would like to set up a system for backing up files and even possibly using it to keep music on and listen to it over the network. I am wondering which would be better to use a separate FTP server or buy one of the NAS enclosures and a couple of hard drives to put in it. I am assuming that the NAS would be accessed via NFS. I have never run an FTP server and I have never had used NAS.I am just looking for pros and cons to each one. I would just like opinions as to which service (FTP/NFS) would be better for this task.

I have a Samba server on a computer. I would like to backup the Samba files on a different computer that is a client in the Samba server network. I can easily drag and drop the Samba files onto the client. I would like to automate this process, and accomplish this using an update copy versus a copy full. How can I accomplish this as bash script? I had no luck using the 'cp' command.

I am only using the 128 character set defined in the original ANSI standard. But as a whole how are the files implmeneted differently. I am not concerned with the display, i.e. if a tab is displayed with 6 or 8 characters but the actual internal representation in memory
One differnce I've hear is the use of (Windows) vs. for line termination (Linux).

Is there an app or find parameter that can search for video files using a specific (DivX for example) encoding? On Windows, you can do this, so I was hoping there would be some way on Linux whether it's with find or another app. I want to find all (*.avi OR *.divx) on my file system with the DiVX fourcc tag (i think that's what its called)

peindom1.php
peindom2.php
peindom3.php
peindom4.php
Is there a command I can run to remove files with these filenames ANYWHERE on the server (so basically, a command to go through all folders on the server and remove instances of that name

The CD contains file named "SC92031.c", the instructions tell me to do the following "Compile the driver source files and it will generate sc92031.o"

I've got a backup.list file that looks like this:
+ /ext/installs
+ /ext/media
- /ext
- /backup
- /dev
- /mnt
- /proc
/ext is a symlink to /mnt/vg1/vol1, under which are installs and media directories.
I'm running:
rdiff-backup --backup-mode --include-globbing-filelist backup.list / /backup
rdiff-backup keeps recreating a symlink: /backup/ext -> /mnt/vg1/vol1, which is kind of missing the point, because then it doesn't actually back up the files in /mnt/vg1/vol1/installs, etc.

I am trying to clean up a collection of music files, often in windows i receive errors on the collection because some of the files have a "?" question mark in the file name, in windows this is not a valid character for file names. How can i search/find files with a question mark in the name? Each time i try to search for "?" i receive a list of items that match a wildcard search where ? is a wildcard. I want to find file names that actually contain the character "?".
