Ubuntu :: Audio Acts Strange After Standby(skips, Repeats)?
Jun 6, 2010
for some reason after I standby, my sound doesn't work as it should. It skips and sometimes repeats and then catches up to where it's supposed to be. I think video does this too

Pretty sure it's Compiz, as when it's acting up if I try something simple like switch workspace, things lock up. A gdm restart can recover from that condition. So after a reboot, log in and start something benign like Firefox (doesn't matter what you start). The window will 'paint' from the bottom up over a period of a few hundred milliseconds. A significant fraction of a second, though. All window operations have this delay.A small window near the top of the screen exhibits a delay as if the entire screen below it had to 'repaint' before it can be displayed.
If you then lock the screen and return to the same session, everything seems to work as normal.lternatively, you can log in as another user... same effect there... return to session 1 and everything is normal. Return to session 2 and everything is normal. It seems that returning to gdm's login screen and back fixes it.So just when you log in for the first time, this annoying paint issue appears. As mentioned, if you try to use any sort of compiz effect, that session is frozen.Usually, things are ok - even if you log out and back in - until the next reboot.
When this first started happening, I would log out/back in and the effect would sometimes fix itself. But not always. The key difference between that and the 100% fix above is that you don't log out above. The session remains logged in. Also, I tried switching to a console and restarting gdm. That also works sometimes, but not always. I would also try starting Nvidia X Server Settings tool before logging out and it seemed like that increased the chances of success. But I'm not sure it did. It does seem that once it's fixed, it stays fixed until the next reboot.Sorry for the lengthy post, but I warned you I wasn't sure how to describe it. Some general things about my system; more gladly on request:- AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4800+- 2.6.32-24-generic #42-Ubuntu SMP Fri Aug 20 14:21:58 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux- 00:05.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation C51PV [GeForce 6150] (rev a2)Package: compiz-gnome

I have very strange problems with all the good audio mp3 players in Ubuntu. Not the bad programs only the good (whcich have good skins and library and so on). Amarok for some reason skips all the music files but only mp3 if I put m3u online radio it works. It doesn't show errors at all just skips the songs. I've never had issues with mp3 files before. The movie player works liek a charm but is too cheap (no library to browse files). Banshee was great and suddenly it stopped working just like the good old Rhythmbox... They appear to be starting in background but don't show nowhere. I cannot install XMMS players too it isn't found on the apt-get server. Also my packages are fully updated.
Reinstalling the programs don't help at all! It must be some major issue with the programs not launching. It's not a single program Banshee, Rhythmbox and I think some other but don't remember the names. Movie player plays all but is too simple. I want something like Winamp with nice library please help. No need for movies just mp3. Exaile works not fine with mp3 but I preffer how Rhytmhbox shows the music library with all the songs not like in seperate folders. I could try song shuffle. But why the other programs don't start what command can show what's happening?

here's some background info: purchased a brand new netbook last week (samsung n130) and thought i'd set up a dual-boot to accompany the pre-installed windows xp sp3, and after a bit of research i decided upon installing ubuntu as my preferred linux os, which i believe at the time was and still is version 10.10.
but the problem is: when i attempt to watch flash videos (from videos for example) the video streams fine, but the audio is very jumpy and skips back and forth every few seconds. occasionally there are periods of say 10-15 seconds where the audio is ok. the problem exists on both firefox and chrome, and is exclusive to ubuntu. keep in mind that i'm an absolute novice when it comes to linux/ubuntu, etc.

Running Ubuntu 10.04 on a dual-boot Windows 7 laptop.
On "suspend," the wireless card appears to close connections correctly. Then, >15 minutes later, the laptop's wifi LED lights up and the laptop generates heat.
The computer should be on standby, but instead it's waking itself up and running down the battery.
Are there any programs that might be failing to suspend for sleep? Are there any settings to prevent the wifi card from waking the computer?
I only noticed this because the laptop was getting hot and the battery was wearing down.

I performed an apt-get upgrade and now my SSH Welcome Banner looks like the following. You'll notice that the banner repeats itself. The bottom half is acutally "static" and doesn't change. The top part is what I would normally see. How do I remove the bottom portion of the banner? Or modify the banner? Using Ubuntu Server 10.04 LTS

This might well be a case of "I've been looking at terminals for far too long", but here goes. In a bash script I'm writing I'd like to get the current minute of the day. Since date doesn't have an in-built format string for that, I thought I would do:minute of day = 60 * hour of day + minute of hourHowever, when the clock rolled around to 12 / 0 the value disappears from the variable. Viz:
Code:
hour=$(date +%k)
echo "hour: $hour"
[code]...

I love VLC Media player, it works great, exept for this one thing. the first minute repeats for all videos that are a minute long (guesstimate time) If I skip the part after that its fine but it is really annoying.

/etc/udev/rules.d/20-our.rules has worked perfectly in FC6 and F10. In F11 I can't get udev to even look at it, much less execute the udev commands in it. Stat tells me that none of the relevant files have been accessed when I plug in a USB device that udevadm says was processed and which clearly matched the rules.. I reboot with several USB devices plugged in and according to stat nothing anywhere in /etc/udev was accessed during the boot process.

I have 2 lists of names, they aren't sorted, and may contain repeats. What I would like to do with a bash script is compare the 2 documents and find and remove each repeat name, saving only one of them. Then concatenate the files. Or if it were easier, concatenate first and find and remove all internal repeats.

I got a problem with my Songbird (1.4.3) on a Fedora 12 64 bit. When I play music and the first song is over, the song changes but the little loudspeaker symbol in the list, that displays the currently playing song, doesn't move to this song. It just stays on the first played one and also the title of the first one is displayed above the progress bar. But that's not all, when the song should change again (from second to third song), it won't do so. The second played song starts again and will be repeated again and again and Meanwhile the mentioned symbol just stays in front of the first song. Only if I press the "next" button two times the third song will be played. So I got to press "next" two times after every two songs. That makes listening to music nearly impossible. The problem occurred after installing a lot of updates (I had no fast internet connection for months so I now had to install all at once), so it is difficult to say which package causes the issue. Before that Songbird worked all fine for months. I would be glad to provide further information, but neither running songbird in terminal, nor the songbird error console shows up any error related to this behaviour. I also tried to delete the .songbird2 folder in my userhome, but it made no difference at all. Normally i would get the latest verion of the software at first, but since songbird dropped linux support, there is no newer linux version than the one installed on my system.

with the mv command or an alternative thereto. It'sreally something I ought to know but I have usually used the mv commandfor a small number of files at a time and, amazingly, never for "hidden" files (with names beginning with .), symbolic links and any lingering hard links. It is my intention to move whole directory trees from one file systemto another, including hidden files.Consider the following directories in /tmp: /tmp/A and /tmp/B, notingtheir contents:
Code:
$ ls -lA /tmp/[AB]
/tmp/A:

So I recently upgraded from 9.04 to 9.10 and then to 10.04, and I love it!
But there's only one key problem -- sound playback.
When I'm playing an mp3 file in rhythmbox, or any other player, it'll skip when I maximize or minimize windows, or do anything that really uses resources.
And on top of that, if I just let it keep going, it'll eventually just stop playing the song, and the progress bar will jump forward and do the same for other songs, not even playing them.
even songs on pandora.com skip, but don't stop playing
I've deduced that it's probably a sound driver thing. I've downloaded the driver for my card, but I the directions tell me to install it in
/usr/src/linux/driver/sound

I try to connect to my server (whose IP is x.x.x.x below) from my laptop. I have no idea why openvpn client won't work this time. It works fine in win7 before. I re-installed openvpn but it doesn't work neither. Then I searched for this issue, find that it is possibly caused by disabled DHCP Client service. I checked, and found it was enabled. Still won't work after restarting dhcp client service.
Basic Info:
OS: Windows 7
OpenVPN client: openvpn-2.2.0
DHCP Client Service started.
The following is the log during connecting:
Code:

I am running LMDE with xfce desktop version 4.8.0 and Windows 7 on a sony vaio. Everything works fine except for one minor inconvenience... When I am using xfce and want to reboot to windows, I have to click shutdown, turn the computer off then back on to get to the grub menu. If I click restart, it reboots back into xfce without ever showing the grub menu.

I've just bought an Asus U31f and installed openSUSE 11.4 64bit on it.
There are no problems with the mouse and mousepad at first when I boot up, but after a while it starts to skip and jump around, and will hardly move vertical at all (allthough it is very eager to move sideways).
The touchpad also becomes overly sensitiv, as I can move the arrow from side to side while holding my finger 0,5 cm above the touchpad, as seen here: [URL]
The weird things is that it can work fine for several hours, and the suddenly turn evil.

In the sound preferences if i set the sound to ALSA sound skips like a scratched CD when i move, maximize, open, close window. If i set the sound to PulseAudio sound skips on everything (vlc ,banshee)except Totem.
On both of these options Banshee is rendered totally unusable. If i set the sound to ESD, than VLC and Banshee work fine though VLC still skips a little bit though less than before. Totem however will no longer be able to play most of the files it could before without extreme unbarable static. Though some files it will still play fine.
HOWEVER with all three of these there is no skipping whatsoever when i play sound on ..... videos in the browser whereas if i play the same video in .flv on a media player the same problems persist.. so the browsers seem unaffected
OSS is by far the best in terms of skipping, none whatsoever. However OSS has a constant steady crackle behind anything that is playing. The crackle is low but still irritating and the crackling makes my ears ring after but i can still listen to music and just try my best to ignore it much like listening to a radio station that barely comes in. So how do i either to stop the static behind OSS... or stop the skipping with ALSA and Pulse, or stop the crackling in ESD or OSS??

This happens on Ubuntu 9.04, 10.04 and Mint 8 "Helena".
The computer: Aser Aspire One D150 with 2gb of RAM, Ubuntu/Mint (depends on the day) booting from a SDHC card.
Problem: When I unplug the computer to move it or plug it in it will go immediately into standby. I go to wake it up, it runs for a few seconds and goes back into standby. After that, it is fine until I unplug it or plug it in again.
