Ubuntu :: Advanced Networking ?

Feb 11, 2009

I have three network interfaces on my box. Lets call them A, B and C.

I want to place my box in-line within our corporate network, so that traffic from LAN goes into interface A and is directed out again through B. So essentially making a Switch. And the last interface is for management of the box it self.

Is this possible?

LAN ---> [[ int . A -- int . B ]] --------> Firewall --> Internet

Could i configure the interfaces so that you basically make a software based TAP? Or on other words "Cut the cable" and putting my box in the middle....

Ubuntu :: Advanced User Settings / 'Connect To Ethernet And Wireless' Option Of The Advanced Settings?

Aug 12, 2010

I'm trying to create a user account for my children in Ubuntu 10.04

When creating their account, I have turned off the 'Connect to ethernet and wireless' option of the Advanced Settings.

However, when I log into their accounts, they still have full access to the internet through both the wireless and ethernet connections. Is this option for some other purpose?

Is there an alternate way to limit internet access for childrens' accounts in Ubuntu? (I'm used to MS Family Safety as a filter for internet access - is there an eqivalent for Ubuntu?)

CentOS 5 Networking :: Advanced - TCP Segmentation Offloading & Udev?

Dec 23, 2009

I'm trying to disable TCP Segmentation offloading across the board in our datacenter to improve performance. Reading the history in the CentOS Bugzilla and the upstream's Bugzilla, they recommend doing this within the udev rules. See:[URL].. So, I created a new udev rules file that looks like this, as filename /etc/udev/rules.d/50-eth_tso.rules:

ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="net", NAME=="eth0", RUN+="/sbin/ethtool -K eth0 tso off"
ACTION=="add", SUBSYSTEM=="net", NAME=="eth1", RUN+="/sbin/ethtool -K eth1 tso off"

[Code]...

Can anyone out there figure out just what I'm doing wrong - I've been struggling with this for about 2 hours trying to make it work, and simply can not figure it out - and would like to not resort to hacking the problem and adding the ethtool commands to /etc/rc.d/rc.local!

Ubuntu :: Less Advanced GRUB When Writing ISO To USB?

May 22, 2010

I've rolled a custom version of the live CD, and everything's going great on it.I was asked to make it a bootable USB stick as well.This was simple enough by installing UltraISO on my Windows box and writing the ISO to a USB stick through the 'Bootable' menu. But for some reason it boots up to a slightly less-pretty version of GRUB.That's all well and good, but now the language selection menu is gone. Is there any way to get that menu in the less-pretty GRUB? At the very least, is there a way to hard-code the language there so certain people have sticks with certain languages?

Ubuntu :: YaST2 - More Advanced Control Panel?

Sep 27, 2010

I'd switched to OpenSuse around ubuntu 8.04, for a number of reasons. I thought I'd give (k)ubuntu another try, cos so much software gets released that's *ubuntu compatible these days, almost as much as is windows compatible. So far it's not bad, but I've got one gripe, that was one of the things that drove me away from kubuntu before. All the advanced user graphical admin stuff is essentially hidden! In OpenSuse, you've got Yast2, which gives you absolutely all your admin stuff in one "control panel". Kubuntu used to have this, in kcontrol, but that's long since gone.

Is there something like Yast2 for kubuntu? As an example of something I could easily do in Yast2 and can't find an easily graphical way to do in kubuntu 10.04-I swapped out one of the hard drives in my system. Now every time I boot, the bootloader is looking for the now missing hard drive, and I have to tell it to skip it. I know I could manually edit the file, but I'd rather have a nice graphical config tool that lets me configure things. I can't seem to find such a thing anywhere in my kubuntu install tho.

Another example-there doesn't seem to be a gui partitioner installed. I can just use parted from the command line, but like I said, I prefer a graphical interface. I installed partitonmanager, but still. A graphical partitioner seems like a pretty crucial thing to have in an OS. Maybe I just missed it someplace, but that comes back to my main point, which is that all the power user graphical stuff seems to be missing, or really well hidden; and it would be nice if all that stuff was in a single place. So, any control panel sort of app, that includes the sort of stuff Yast2 has on OpenSuse?

General :: (Ubuntu 10.04) Advanced Graphics Won't Work

Feb 26, 2011

I have been trying to get the advanced graphics for compiz, emerald, and cairo dock working for a few days now, but alas, I have failed horribly. I tried to uninstall compiz and emerald a few days ago (stupidly) and since then, these problems have arisen. I tried seeking help on ubuntuforums.org, but they were unable to help. You can see the entire thread at the following link: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1694800&page=2

If you want a detailed list of everything I've done, you can go to that site, but here's a summary: I entered a series of code that I was lead to believe would eradicate compiz from my system so that I could go through with a full reinstallation. However, the result was that I now can't load any advanced graphics from emerald, compiz or cairo dock. I've tried reinstalling the entire operating system, but I'm getting the same problem. I also tried a live CD for 10.10, but with the same results.

I don't know if this is a relevant piece of information, but one thing of note is that I typed "compiz --replace" into the terminal and got the following:

Code:

WARNING: Application calling GLX 1.3 function "glXCreatePixmap" when GLX 1.3 is not supported! This is an application bug!
Starting gtk-window-decorator
compiz (cube) - Warn: Failed to load slide: /usr/share/gdm/themes/Human/ubuntu.png
WARNING: Application calling GLX 1.3 function "glXDestroyPixmap" when GLX 1.3 is not supported! This is an application bug!
Again, I don't know if that helps at all, but there it is...

Ubuntu :: Setting Up Hard Drive Partition With Advanced Settings?

Nov 27, 2010

Basically I got Windows 7 installed on my laptop and it's been doing nothing but slowing down more and more even though it isn't used for much more than basic internet use and I realized the hard drive was the cause, I did a bunch of stuff to try to fix it that I won't get into here, and in basic I'm to the point I'm just going to reinstall Windows 7, but this time with the help of Ubuntu's partitioning utilities.

I've already had the first ~5GB of the drive overwritten with zero's (thanks to DBAN) and now I'm booted on the Ubuntu LiveCD and trying to learn the command line stuff for formatting a drive. What I want to achieve is use the smallest amount of space possible for the MBR and that's also a point I don't quite understand.
After some research on Google I read that the MBR is on one sector only the very first one, yet the first partition on a hard drive starts anywhere from 63 to 4096. Why are they so far apart? And can I force the partition to be moved closer? I know I know their is pretty much no purpose to this but it bugs me knowing that their might be 31MB (64 512byte sectors minus 1 (MBR) and 64 (beginning of partition)) just going to waste when I could put the NTFS MFT there. Then the second and last part I want to understand is I want to make the NTFS partition have a 512byte allocation unit size and have it lined with the 512sectors on the hard drive so it can have the max performance. Does anyone know how to do this stuff or could find better info than I have on the internet?

Fedora Installation :: F15 Aware Of Advanced Format HD's?

Jul 21, 2011

Can anyone tell me if F15 is aware of the new Advanced Format Hard disks. The new dell laptop has one of these drives in it. The reason for the question is the disk is a 250Gb but only seems to have 230ish available which does seem a lot to loose? The dell website only talks about Windows and not linux. Below is from their site:

"In an effort to support higher capacity hard drives, the Hard Disk Drive (HDD) industry is moving towards Advanced Format (AF) HDDs with 4KB sectors to address the current limitations with the 512-byte sector HDDs. The transition to 4KB sector HDDs will allow storage devices to more easily adopt larger capacities in both the notebook and desktop space. While hard drives will transition to 4KB sectors and to maintain backwards compatibility, current Advanced Format 4KB HDDs, also known as 512e HDDs, will emulate 512-byte SATA communications to hosts and will operate at 4KB."

OpenSUSE :: Advanced Processor Affinity Practice?

Oct 27, 2010

Am investigating processor affinity theory and practice, am somewhat surprised at the paucity of information on something that has been a part of many Windows Enterprise type applications for more than a decade and although I haven't investigated would assume is supported by big iron UNIX.What it is Processor Affinity is the *NIX terminology for "soft" assigning a process and its threads to a specific processor core. On multi-tasking machines and particularly those which run heavy loads it can be useful to "advise" the Scheduler to isolate/assign heavy loads to a core separate from other processes. I also have a specific situation where I would like to run more than one instance of a specific app, but cannot when sharing the same processing environment.

What I've found so far By default, any and all processes are assigned an affinity that permits running on any and all available processors.The taskset utility can be used to modify the affinity for any process, which means that once an application/service/process has been launched, only then can the affinity be modified.It seems that the RH platform may also have a utility called tuna which might provide some tuning capabilities in addition to setting affinity but does not seem to be in the SuSE repositories and I cannot find source.Is there a reference or utility that can launch an application with a specified processor affinity?

Hardware :: Advanced Format 4k Sector Drive With LVM

Nov 24, 2010

So I finally bought an advanced format drive, the 2 TB Samsung f4. I will be using it on my slackware box, running slackware 12.2 with kernel 2.6.27-7. I intend to format the drive by hand with fdisk and start the first partition on sector 2048, or perhaps boot a livecd and format it with a newer version of fdisk or parted that will natively partition this drive correctly. My real question is, do I have to do anything special to add this drive to an existing LVM volume group? I'm thinking no, since LVM basically just breaks all your data into 4 MB chunks and spreads them across the pool of partitions you've defined, but I've found many conflicting opinions from searching google. To simplify things, I'm not using RAID of any sort, neither hardware nor mdraid.
