Mar 4, 2011On Xubuntu, I right click something like I did on Ubuntu, to add to panel.. It just clicks the program. There is NO options when I right click a program in Applications. It's frustrating.. re's an incredibly unnecessary way that is different than Ubuntu to put an application to my panel.

I was going to try creating a launcher application in terminal, but I'm not sure what code to use.

Apr 29, 2011I just updated from 10.10 to 11.04 about an hour ago and I've already managed to crash it. (currently running from my old 10.04 Live CD)
the first restart from the update worked fine. i had a look around and tried to orientate myself to the new dash etc.
this is where the problem comes in.
All i did was open the control center and have a look at the new Unity and Gnome 3 settings etc.
My computer froze and so i had to force shutdown and restart.
I then discover my two main problems.
- the new grub menu/splash screen is displaying at too high a frequency for my monitor to display (if i wait long enough it loads 11.04's login screen by default.)
- upon login, all i can see is my desktop background and my cairo dock from 10.10 but nothing else. (no panel or app launcher side bar)

Jun 2, 2011This question concerns the system panel/launcher panel / the panel with the launcher that normally appears across the top or bottom of the screen. The default system panel layout was nice, but, I screwed it up by accidentally deleting the task manager. I put the task manager back but now my clock & system tray are to the left of the task manager, and, I can't just drag things around. Is there a trick to organizing the widgets on this panel or is it broken? Every time I try to move something, it basically ignores me and adds it to the right of everything else.

May 28, 2010take it as read im still learning Ubuntu and occassionally do stupid things, like click on the unsubcribe buttons on unwanted email.
Did that and for some obscure reason i lost the default firefox icon from the top task bar. I could make a launcher on the desktop but i failed to find the firefox exe. I did get it to show hidden files, found the firefox folder but no exe file or similiar to launch.
Would someone be so kind as to tell me where to drill so i can at least put the firefox launcher on the desktop. As a fill in im using chromium, and i did find its folder hidden in firefox's.
ie... [username]/mozilla/firefox/chromium ??

May 7, 2010I am running Ubuntu 10.04 with dual monitors with a nvidia GeForce 8400GS. I can't figure out how to fix. On the primary screen on the Gnome Panel it shows all my open applications. I currently have VirtualBox, Firefox, and 3 Terminal windows open and they show up on the panel. I can minimize and maximize,etc from the panel bar. This is my issue. If I move say one of the Terminal sessions to the second monitor it disappears from the primary monitor's panel bar.
If I click the hide all applications and show desktop icon there is no way for me to reopen just that terminal window that was on my second screen. I noticed this when I moved my Firefox window to the second screen and minimized everything with the show desktop icon. I could not maximize Firefox cause the application was not listed on the panel. I had to kill Firefox and relaunch.

Apr 19, 2011I'm running ubuntu 10.04 and I get several weird pop up windows when I first boot up. I have tried getting help from the community forums and have tried several of the recommendations but they haven't helped. In fact, I think some of the things that I have done have made my computer worse. The first window I started getting said "Could not update ICEauthority file/home/dpan/.ICEauthority" (dpan is my user name). If I would click on the close button it would close. Before that when I was saving a bunch of sound files to my home folder, I got a message that my root drive was almost full which was weird considering I wasn't saving anything to my root drive. When I check how much of my root partition is used with "GParted" (under system>administration) along with using the "df -H" command in the command line it shows that I have only used about 4.5GB and have about 7GB of unused space on my root partition. Although, when I use the "Disk Usage Analyzer" (under Applications>Accessories) it shows that my whole root partition is full.
When I searched for ways to fix the "could not update" window, some of the forums talked about removing some of the keyring codes. So I did that, but it seemed that that caused later problems. I stated to get two windows on top op each other that were identical that said "The panel encountered a problem while loading 'OAFIID:_IndicatorApplet' Do you want to delete the applet from your configuration?". In the same window, there is a box that says "don't delete" and a box that says "delete". I should mention that I think there were two keyring codes that I deleted and there are two identical pop up windows. I have tried clicking both the delete and the don't delete boxes several times but I get the same thing every time.
Shortly thereafter, I also lost my ability to get on the internet with Firefox and Chromium. When I tried to get on with Chromium, it would start to load but then it would stop and nothing would happen. When I tried to get on with Firefox, a window would pop up that said "Close Firefox...... Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system.". It also had a clickable box in the window that said "OK". I didn't have Firefox already running and Firefox wouldn't let me on the internet. For awhile, I was able to use the browser "Epiphany" to get on the internet but after a week, Epiphany wouldn't even let me on the internet and it did the exact same thing that Chromium did when I clicked on it (started to load but then stopped and did nothing). When Epiphany did allow me to use the internet it wouldn't let me view PDF's or save pictures that were attachments on my emails.

Mar 4, 2011I have had this problem with all installations of Maverick Meerkat. Moving the default clock from the upper panel to the lower panel makes it bahave strangely. When clicked on, it now appears in the middle of the screen (sometimes even higher depending on resolution). This never happened prior to Maverick Meerkat.
How do I go about to fix this strange bug?

Dec 4, 2010Regarding the gnome-panel in Ubuntu (64 bit).... I discovered some time ago that I wasn't the only one who routinely (every login) had their gnome-panel appear butchered, for which Alt-F2 then 'killall gnome-panel' would easily fix.
Having become impatient with this over the past 8 months, I decided I would automate the process and so cofiguring the startup applications seemed like a perfectly logical choice to me. Turns out I was wrong. After adding 'killall gnome-panel' to the startup applications not only does the panel fail to load altogether now, but Alt-F2 doesn't even work.
I tried Ctl-Alt-F1 and working with the graphics-free mode thinking I could somehow navigate to the startup apps config file and edit it, but I don't know where it is or how to edit it without logging in as root and I certainly don't know of any 'root password'.

Mar 23, 2010I'm new to Ubuntu and really like it so far, having come from a PC background up to now. I've installed it on my Acer laptop and all is well there. However, on my desktop, the screen resolution doesn't match the Ubuntu desktop and fonts and graphics are very blurry. The hardware I have is:
HP Compaq dx2450 micro-tower FE281EA
Samsung 23" widescreen monitor, native resolution 1680x1050
When I check the resolution using System > Preferences > Display it says that indeed I'm using 1680x1050, which should be correct. However, the bottom of the Ubuntu desktop is cut-off, below the bottom of the screen, so I can only see the very top edge of the bottom panel. The top panel is also slightly cut off, missing about the top 20% of the panel. Left and right seem to be in line OK. The resulting blurriness of fonts makes it fairly unusable until I get it fixed.
I've searched fairly extensively and I realise there are other threads on this so sorry for posting again, but they all seem to be slightly different problems and all the responses are fairly or very technical. Maybe I can't avoid a technical solution and getting my hands dirty with a terminal prompt, but I'm hoping I can fix this without resorting to stuff I don't understand and might get wrong. I'm a technically minded end-user but not a unix guy.
Ubuntu :: Starting Empathy From Panel Freezes Panel?
Sep 25, 2010So I take a glance at the time, and realize the clock has been showing the same hour for ages.Basically, if I use the gnome-panel menu for launching empathy the panel freezes. The workaround that I use is switching off showing seconds and switching it on again on the date format menu of the panel. (I never used seconds on the date format, but that way you realize the panel is frozen)I've seen this behaviour in two diferent computers I use, any hint on what may cause this? Every applet keeps working as usual, but the menu display is frozen.I'm on 10.04, using version 2.30.2 of gnome. Steps to reproduce: click on the envelope icon of the menu and launch xat. It only happens the first time (when empathy is loaded) and it gets solved if you start empathy through sessions or whatever (The problem with the sessions workaround is that I can't manage to make it started without focus).
