Ubuntu :: "Launcher & Menus" Panel Always Appears On Start Up?
Jul 28, 2011
version: 11.04, 32 bit, Gnome/Unity desktopThe "Launcher & Menus" panel (asking where to place launcher in relation to cursor/pointer), always appears on start up. Both in Unity and Classic desktops. As background, I originally set up the PC with Unity, but in frustration I returned to the classic desktop. But for some reason (I fiddled something somewhere), I get the above panel popping up in to top LH corner on start up of either desktop. It's annoying because I am preparing this PC for a hopeful convert for Windoze, so presentation needs to be goodI run Ubuntu 11.04 (both classic desktop) on two other PCs and this is not a problem.

I'm using Ubuntu 11.04 Unity.. the inconvenience I'm facing is that the launcher appears whenever I'm using the "Drag&drop" function in any application, for example Lotus Notes or Google Chrome.
Is there a way to prevent it from doing so?
P.S.: windows manager: Compiz, decorator:Emerald

I have been running the 10.10 Netbook version for about 3 weeks, as as a dual boot with Windows XP on an MSI Wind netbook primarily with an external monitor (and the netbook monitor off). Because I am using an external monitor, I'd like to get more of a full desktop experience. However, when I read on the forum how to get Gnome desktop workin, or even the desktop-switcher utility, I think there is something wrong with my installation.
I have the unity launcher on the left, which does not appear to have any easy way to add items. I have the bar across the top, which has the logout/logoff/shutdown button, clock and a few icons (bluetooth, network, etc.) on the right. On the far left, I have an icon that brings up the "Microsoft Bob"-like menu (Web, Music, Photos, Games, etc.). I don't have any menu (System, Applications, etc.). When I logout, I have no option to log in using gnome desktop.
Why don't I have many of these options, that other users describe? What is the best way for me to get the full gnome desktop? When I go into synaptic and search for gnome desktop, dozens of items come up, including many that are marked as installed.

On Xubuntu, I right click something like I did on Ubuntu, to add to panel.. It just clicks the program. There is NO options when I right click a program in Applications. It's frustrating.. re's an incredibly unnecessary way that is different than Ubuntu to put an application to my panel.

Whether it is just made unconfigurable or difficult to configure I don't like it. Can't move the panel from top to bottom, Firefox did not have pull down menus for bookmarks etc. Where the did the Application ,Places and System panel menus go? In 10.10 and before I could right click on the desk top and add to the panel but, 11.04 does not even respond to right click. If this is a bug that has a fix please help but if this is normal for 11.04.please let me know how I can make 10.10 the default partition to boot.

I accidentally removed my little speaker (volume control) and internet buttons from my launch panel. I can't seem to figure how to put them back. They are not listed in the 'Add to panel' right click option.

Before upgrading to Natty I used to have a Banshee icon in my panel when the application was open - I could close the program but it would just minimize to the panel. Now when I open Banshee there is no icon in the panel. I checked the preferences menu to see if I could change this setting, but didn't see anything there.

My brother runs storage server over our LAN,I connect to it via smb.(I'm not sure if it's called Samba or just pronounced that way) Rather than hitting ctrl+l in a file browser window, and typing smb://000.000.0.000/drivename each time, I'd like to know how I can add a launcher to the gnome panel which will do that for me I know this is possible, because I have done it before, I just forget how. I was going to try creating a launcher application in terminal, but I'm not sure what code to use.

Since I upgraded my kernel to 2.6.31-18 I have been experiencing problems with my sound. 2.6.31-18 sound problems with nvidia MCP72XE/MCP72P/MCP78U/MCP78SThe laptop speakers no longer shut off when plugging in headphones. My sound control applet no longer appears in the panel. When launching a sound application sound starts off real loud for a second and then changes to much quieter. I have had this laptop since Hardy with never any sound issues. I do not know if it is the kernel upgrade or the accompanying backports modules. Could be neither for all I know and it just started around that time and is a coincidence.
Here is what was installed:
Installed the following packages:
linux-backports-modules-alsa-2.6.31-18-generic (2.6.31-18.20)
linux-headers-2.6.31-18 (2.6.31-18.55)

I just updated from 10.10 to 11.04 about an hour ago and I've already managed to crash it. (currently running from my old 10.04 Live CD)
the first restart from the update worked fine. i had a look around and tried to orientate myself to the new dash etc.
this is where the problem comes in.
All i did was open the control center and have a look at the new Unity and Gnome 3 settings etc.
My computer froze and so i had to force shutdown and restart.
I then discover my two main problems.
- the new grub menu/splash screen is displaying at too high a frequency for my monitor to display (if i wait long enough it loads 11.04's login screen by default.)
- upon login, all i can see is my desktop background and my cairo dock from 10.10 but nothing else. (no panel or app launcher side bar)

This question concerns the system panel/launcher panel / the panel with the launcher that normally appears across the top or bottom of the screen. The default system panel layout was nice, but, I screwed it up by accidentally deleting the task manager. I put the task manager back but now my clock & system tray are to the left of the task manager, and, I can't just drag things around. Is there a trick to organizing the widgets on this panel or is it broken? Every time I try to move something, it basically ignores me and adds it to the right of everything else.

I just booted into Linux and the Update Manager prompted me to restart. After the restart the GRUB interface I expect to see is no longer there and now it is just a command line that says press tab for more options.I have not got a clue with shell language as I have had no time to learn it as of yet. Do I need to uninstall and reinstall Linux or is there a command that can be typed that boots up the operating system.Even better is there something I can do that can return me to seeing the interface like I was used to.

I have a Dell Vostro 200. Have been running Ubuntu on it for 18 months - no probs. Recently it became very slow to boot. 5-10 minutes before Ubuntu startup screen appears. Have installed Ubuntu 10.10 (on a reformatted hard drive) today. No change. It's fairly certain to be a hardware problem but I don't know where to start.

Well, to start off my graphics card didn't work but I got that fixed.
When I start up and the login screen appears it no longer says my username and Other.. under it. It only displays Other.. I have to click that type in my username and then my password. When I log on the Auto Bug Reporting tool pops up and says 3 things crashed
I can't change my system time, shutdown or reboot under system or my username in the top right hand corner. I have to su and manually type reboot or shutdown to shutdown. It is like the computer is completely restricting me from using it.
When I try to get into my firewall an error comes up
I cannot mount anything:
