when i install wubi and ubuntu inside windows 7 it doesn't show my other drive in ubuntu that i have in windows 7 how do i activate my extra drive inside ubuntu also when i went in disk utility inside ubuntu if said mounted at host but i want to show it inside ubuntu and the version of ubuntu that i have 11.04

So i saw a thread somewhere about using a thumb drive to make extra ram for your pc. This was of course on a windows pc. I was wondering if this works on Ubuntu also and if it is really worth it?
Also if you have 4 USB ports could you put in 4 usb thumb drives and have a fantastic amount of ram?
How much space does Ubuntu 10.04 take?
I have a 320 GB HDD I use for data apart from the regular HDD for the OS. Of course when you go to format it, it's actually 298GB. So I made a 248 GB partition, ext4 for ubuntu data, and a 50GB partition for Windows.
It shows as 248.01 GiB in size in GParted, with 217.27 GiB used. 30.75GiB unused.
When I go to Computer, right click on the partition, click Properties, it says Total capacity 244.1 GB, 18.3 GB free, 225.8 GB Used.
So:
1) Why does GParted show it as 248GB and the Properties as 244 GB?
2) More importantly: Why does Gparted show I've used 217.27 GBs, while the Properties show I've used 225.8 GB? What's going on there?
I have added a 1.0 Tb USB HDD and would like to install games, extra software, etc. on it when using apt-get or Synaptic but I can not find any info on doing so.

If I do it from the Properties of the file by manually changing a field on permissions, it changes back automatically before my eyes. If I change it with chmod, nothing happens. They are all in "-rw-/drwx/-rwx------" mode. What should I do?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI recently installed openSUSE 11.4 on another hard disk of my 11.3 machine. I have another drive in my computer that is used solely for extra storage. Before installing 11.4 I could boot my computer with or without the drive installed, but now if I try to boot without it I get Error 17 from GRUB. I don't understand this as there is nothing on that drive that should be needed by boot and I can find nothing in the GRUB configuration that references the drive.I am getting ready to clear the whole system for a fresh install anyways, but it would be nice to know for future knowledge what is causing it.

there are 2 related to 11.3: openSUSE_11.3/ and openSUSE_11.3_KDE_Distro_Factory/ Index of /repositories/KDE:/Extra they are not listed as official kde4 repos here KDE repositories - openSUSE, but they are in the same directory structure on the build service so it would assume they are official (what ever official means) They have rpm's I didn't see in community and playground (at least for 11.3) such as audex and clementine I would guess that they are for the stable and factory versions of KDE4 but then shouldn't there be a 3rd for unstable if this was the case? Or do they refer to the distro, 11.3 stable and 11.3 factory

This is, incidentally, the same message that I see while booting. The error message goes away if I comment out the line in fstab starting with /dev/sdc.
I updated my system and then this popped up:
I picked the option that is selected, then I restarted pc to apply updates and now my "grub" menu has 2 extra options.
The first 2 are the new ones.
I don't know what its for.. but when I start up the computer I pick the Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.31-19-generic

I'm relatively new with Ubuntu- but I'm pretty experienced otherwise with computers. I just installed Ubuntu on my Intel machine and it seemed to be running a little slow so I checked the System Monitor and found that there were 2 CPU's being displayed (I only have 1) and that one or both were maxed out at 100%. What I have for hardware is one Intel Atom 1.6Ghz processor, with 2GB of ram. When I check what resources are running, none of them seem to be taking up that much memory (firefox being the most at 60mb).Any advice on what might be going on here? How is it displaying 2 CPU's when I only have one?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a problem while burning a CD-Extra (audio+data in two seperate sessions) in k3b 1.68.0~alpha3-0ub on Karmic. The audio tracks are being burned and the session is closed, but k3b does not start burning the second session. There is the last status message in the log: "Searching previous session" and one near the progress bar: "Closing session". Normally it should close the audio session, eject the burner for resetting his state and begin burning the second session. But in fact it just stops, instead of burning the second session. My only option is to cancel.
I already tried to add -eject into the user options of wodim/cdrecord. It ejects, but it didn't help. The first (audio-)session nevertheless is correctly burned, only the second (data-)session is missing. I tried to switch the writing app to cdrdao (option in k3b), but in this mode k3b dies with a segmentation fault. Only "auto" or "cdrecord" mode works. (In fact "auto" chooses cdrecord). There doesn't seem to be a different version of k3b available in synaptic to try out. I switched over from gentoo, where k3b worked. Unfortunately I cannot remember the exact version of k3b in gentoo. The system was approx. 1 year old.
PS: Is there a native Gnome/GTK app that does CD-Extra? Brasero and GnomeBaker do not support it yet.

The other is always "/media/Data/ZZZMaint/PC/R stats pkg". I think it may be to do with the fact that some time earlier I had created a launcher in the Main Menu - called "R documentation"', with command "nautilus --no-desktop '/media/Data/ZZZMaint/PC/R stats pkg' " (the idea was to have a menu item that opened up a folder containing a set of documents I refer to). I have since disabled that menu item but the problem remains. I would very much like to stop Nautilus opening this extra window.I've tried looking through gconf-editor but haven't seen anything that looks relevant. The extra window doesn't get opened when I run Nautilus from other places, but it always happens when Nautilus is opened from the Places Menu, regardless of whether I'm opening a drive or a bookmark.

I then installed Ext2Explore so I could read the drive. I am able to read it now and see all of the folders but it appears that I am only able to see the main partition. With the other partitions, I see them listed in the Media folder but I click on them and they are all empty. Does anybody know how I can retrieve the data in these partitions?

I have found that the package "ubuntu-wallpapers-extra" appears to be the culprit in imposing a system-wide new default of a particular wallpaper background image on all users (both those already added and those yet to be added) as well as the login screen. It can be overridden. The problem is, it has to be overridden.
Anyone know of a way I can block any such changes from happening? If not that, what about a tool that will automatically revert such changes. The goal is so that users (and the login context) won't need an explicit background image to be set and when so, will get the image that was the default at install time.
I have 10.10 64-bit on a Fujitsu T900. the hard drive has windows seven as well (64-bit). The win7 is the orginal from the manufacture. the boot log originally had (in this order): Win7, Windows Vista (about 100 MB not sure why but can't remove), recovery partition. I put ubuntu on after those three. Some times when the computer goes into suspend mode from ubuntu it will not wake up after wards. the only option it to power i down manually. when it comes back up there is now a second reference to ubuntu in the boot log. this has happened several times. there are now four valid references to ubuntu in the boot loader. I need to remove three of them, but i'm concerned that removing them will compromise ubuntu. Also I'm not sure where the boo log in windows seven is.

are not the solution, because they install all distro packages, and I want only the base of desktops KDE and Gnome.
I can install LXDE with
apt-get install lxde
instead of
apt-get install lubuntu-desktop
I can install Xfce with
apt-get install xfce4
instead of
apt-get install xubuntu-desktop
However, I could not do the same with KDE and Gnome.
My ubuntu server is a 1.5T with 448GB available. When I backup my files each night, my files only amount to 397GB. Is there an easy way to see where the extra 600 GB on my server is located? I think that I might have had a couple of old backups write to the server, but I cannot find them.
