When I switch tabs in Firefox or Gedit the window title doesn't update, though the task bar title does, and if I minimize and then restore it updates to the correct value until I switch tabs again. Are there any workarounds? What sort of debug info do I need to post?

You know how window titles appear in the bottom panel, and you can re-maximize minimized windows by clicking on that window title?ell, those window titles are no longer appearing. So when I minimize a window, I don't know how to bring it back.The bottom panel is still there, with the "show desktop" and the trash can icon on it.But no window titles.nd I don't have any idea what I did to make this happen.
View 2 Replies View RelatedWhile I think Unity has its many ups and downs, I found it usable enough to choose it as my default desktop, after some customization. Somewhere in tweaking the desktop with ccsm - or elsewhere - I did something boneheaded. Now when a new window opens at the top of the screen, its title bar is hidden under the Unity panel. I could just wipe everything out and start over, but I kinda like the way things work on my desktop - with this exception. Where I might look to figure out what is letting windows be placed all the way up under the panel.
I did try creating a new account and looking at ccsm config export and comparing it to mine, but did not see anything useful. The only thing I changed with respect to window placement/handling, AFAIK, is disabling maximization at the top of the screen (in 'Grid' module); restoring that did not help. The problem turns out to be caused by using a window type 'panel' in my conky config. Changing the window type to 'desktop' cured the problem. Did not dive any deeper to analyse exactly what conky 'panel' windows do to interfere with Compiz/Unity.
I am looking for a way to place titles either on or under the previews in the Window Picker. I usually have many windows open, quite often with many of those windows being from the same program (i.e., OpenOffice Documents). I am wondering if the Scale plugin has some way of either overlaying titles when the mouse hovers over the preview, or if titles can be placed directly underneath the previews as they would be in OSX's Expose.
View 5 Replies View RelatedIs there a known bug in Ubuntu 10.04 LTS about this? When for example Brasero Disc burner is in action, it displays the progress as percentages in the title bar. This makes my sidebar that shows all open programs flick every time the percentage is progressing, and even worse; it switches between one and two column display on each flick... I am using the sidebar on the right side, and have seen some extra problem reports about that, but would appreciate any pointers to where this is being discussed and / or fixed.

View 12 Replies View RelatedGave unity a try, did not like it, switched to classic. I had pretty much figured out eye candy in previous versions, but I can't change the window border in 11.04. If I enable emerald as the window decorator under compiz settings, I get a blank window border, regardless of which emerald theme I select. If I click the default under compiz settings and use compiz-decorator, I also get a blank window border. If I use gtk-window-decorator, I then have a proper window border, but I have no way to change it. With it, I can use appearance preferences and change themes, colors, icons, etc., but selecting different window borders under customize has no effect at all. I don't like the window border I'm stuck with, anybody know how to switch these in 11.04?
View 7 Replies View RelatedWhy does on some computers my terminal window have a background I can see through and on others its a solid color? I have Ubuntu 10.04 installed on 4 machines as base OS and I have many virtual machines of it also. I havent changed the terminal preferences on any of them, however on some computers the terminal background which is purple is not solid in that you can see what is in the background behind it. On others the background is truly solid purple; you can not see behind/through it.
Is there any way to change the terminal window for these machines that are displaying solid to the 'see-thru' way? Ive been using some ebooks and things and really like opening up vi/vim in the purple see-thru window that allows me to write and see the text in the background...however on some machines I can not do this because the terminal display is truly solid. ? All my computers have the same profile settings for terminal..

Can't find anything quite like this having been asked already I have just bought all of Babylon 5, and want to put it on my hdd instead of using the discs. dvd::rip works fine for me. I can rip and then transcode titles to AVI manually. What I want is to rip a disc or two, and then have dvd::rip transcode them overnight (takes about 50 minutes per episode on my machine). I tried this on the command line: dvdrip -f transcode -t 2 b5s1d1.rip which, after briefly loading the GUI, just gets this error: Can't locate object method "error_dialog" via package "Video:VDRip::GUI::Main" at /usr/share/perl5/Video/DVDRip/GUI/Main.pm line 173. Gave up and found dvd::ripqueue, which is a gui utility that automates what I would have put into a script, but it doesn't work properly - dvd::rip launches, but only performs the first pass and produces no output. My projects were set up and saved correctly (as I said, all this works if I start it manually from the dvd::rip GUI).

I'm using Sound Juicer 2.31.6 to turn CD Audio into digital format for my portable digital audio player.I put in the CD into my disc drive, load up Sound Juicer. I find the track listings on Music Brainz, after having MusicBrainz search FreeDB. But how do I import the track titles into SoundJuicer? I tried "Re-read disc" after entering the name and album exactly as it appears in MusicBrainz, but that doesn't help. It still says "Could not find Unknown Title by Unknown Artist".

I just updated and restarted my computer (lots of updates), and when I logged in all of the window decorations are gone as well as alt-space and alt-tab doing nothing. Thinking that the update messed with the WM settings, I opened the settings manager up, but both the Window Manager and Window Manager Tweaks section are blank. The other sections are fine, just those two. (and no, I'm not doing Unity, KDE, or Gnome) The panels appear to be functioning correctly, though my workspaces got smashed as well.
Edit: Upon closer inspection, I can no longer add workspaces, I set the number of workspaces to 4, but it only shows one in the list below
Edit 2: Upon creating a new user to mess with themes, the WM was working fine in the new user, same problems in this user.
I just updated kde 4.1 to 4.2.2 on my intrepid ibex (8.10) but it is updating itself to 9.04 right now. Anyway in 4.2 there are now window title bars on any aps till I start compiz thru terminal and I cannot access my hotmail thru konqurer or firefox.

I lost my previous AWN config and now when I run by hand and try and go into the configuration gui I see this /usr/lib/python2.6/site-packages/gtk-2.0/glib/_glib.so: undefined symbol: PyUnicodeUCS4_DecodeUTF8 I've tried upgrading gtk and glibc and pygtk from rawhide, but still no dice.
I have a problem with my Fedora 14, only on Fedora 15. Been out of my home for a week, when I arrived home and turned the PC on first thing I made was the update, as usual. But when I reboot or shutdown the PC and when I go to do login, the Fedora get's stuck and doesn't show me the login window to insert my login. Made a clean install and it worked fine, until I made the last updates and it became again, stuck before the login window appears. Is there any update making this? What could be? It must be some update, because when I made the clean install it worked fine, and with the first update also worked fine.

How about floating windows above desktop cube? Dodge? In which upon selecting a window, the non-selected windows move around it to move it to the front.I also notice that many window updates are very poor. For example, in the compiz settings manager when I switch tabs, the window does not actually update unless I move it. I click on a tab and it looks just like the previous tab. If I move the mouse around, it will update the wind in blocks under the mouse, but not the whole window.And, it would appear that the standard compiz is still available from my desktop settings in KDE. Could I have failed to remove the original compiz?
I have been running Ubuntu 10.04 & 10.10 nicely over the last year and recently I found the avant-window-navigator, which I now use instead of gnome-panel.It's easy to make the changes in previous versions, I just had to go into gconf-editor, navigate to /desktop/gnome/required_components and change the "panel" key from gnome-panel to avant-window-navigator.
Now I am one of the many who despises Unity and put off the upgrade to 11.04, until I read that you can select Ubuntu Classic when logging in and not use Unity.No problem,I thought.I will just use Ubuntu Classic, make the same changes as before and not use Unity.But, this doesn't seem to work. The same keys are not present in gconf-editor and even if I add them they have no effect.

View 3 Replies View RelatedSo if we don't like Unity or the way it crashes with alarming regularity, the fact that it requires multiple mouse clicks to do things we used to do with a couple and the fact that the launcher is not configurable in any meaningful way, we can always go back to Ubuntu Classic, right? Wrong!
Trying to enable desktop effects in Classic under amd64 and NVidia proves something of a nightmare.
1. There is no 'Desktop Effects' tab anymore. We are told that this is no longer necessary as Compiz is running by default.
2. Jockey reports that the NVidia driver is installed and that the driver is activated but 'not currently in use'. This is a bug and has been reported. However, this could tempt people to uninstall and re-install the driver (I am one of these) with disastrous results.
3. Trying to enable things like the Cube and Cube rotation break Compiz and remove *all* the settings in CCSM. Window menus and borders disappear and have to be restored by resetting the Window Manager to Metacity.
4. Getting applications like Radio Tray or Shutter to show in the System Tray involves circuitous circumventing of a 'Whitelist' (which is there for our protection because we shouldn't really want to use applications which put icons in the tray!) is really going to put off people installing applications which then apparently don't work. (They do work, they just become unusable because you cant see them or do anything with them!)
5. Skype will sometimes load and sometimes won't. Sometimes the sound is corrupted and sometimes not. Despite the fact that Skype is proprietary software, many people need to use it. If it becomes unreliable many people will look elsewhere or go back to Wingedows.
6. In both Unity and Classic the task bar will randomly freeze and become unresponsive, requiring a reboot.
Natty Narwhal? More like Natty Dread at the moment. I dread turning it on and it is dreadful. I'll try Gnome 3 or go back to 10.10. I can no longer recommend Ubuntu as a viable alternative to Windows to my customers.
Is it possible to get the gnome style scrollbars on the classic desktop on 11.04? The new disappearing slider is bugging me. In particular I like clicking on the scrollbar below the slider to advance.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI just installed Ubuntu 11.04, to find that I don't like Unity. I want to get back to normal Gnome, but on the login screen, when I select "Classic mode", it gets into Unity anyway.
I also tried to un-check Unity Plugin in Compiz Settings, without success. "Classic mode (no effects)" works great, but like it says, there is no effects at all...
