Ubuntu Installation :: Booting Multiple Distros From USB - Choose Which One To Boot From?

Oct 31, 2010

With the startup disk creator on Ubuntu (Currently running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS) I realised you could boot Ubuntu from a USB and then install it onto the HDD if you wish to. *Side note* Still amazes me you can run a whole operating system from a USB memory stick drive *End Side note* Now My question is: 'Is it possible to have multiple distros of Linux on a USB memory stick and choose which one you wish to boot from when you boot up the computer?'I was hoping to get a seagate portable HDD ((here) and load quite a few different Linux distros on it to get a broader view of Linux than just Ubuntu (Although Ubuntu does rock ).

Is there simple ways of doing this? I have read around this forum and Google and a suggestion was given to install all of the distros onto the portable HDD/ USB memory stick and then install Ubuntu onto it last as its good for picking up other OSes in its GRUB. (Again if my idea on GRUB and its workings are wrong please point it out - got to keep learning)

Ubuntu :: Booting After Installation (Dual Booting With Vista) - Error: No Such Devide Found

Jun 24, 2010

i decided to install ubuntu in my PC,i downloaded the .ISO image and i installed it in my USB. After trying it and all that i observed that i really liked it and i decided to formally install it to my computer in the hard drive. When i reached the partition thing,i selected to dual boot with Vista and select between each them in every startup, when i clicked FORWARD it gave me an error which i did not read(because, again im a noob) so i clicked cancel.

Today i wanted to go through the process again and now really install it,so again i went to the time zone part and i clicked forward but then, instead of taking me straight to the partition phase,it appeard a window saying "The installer has detected that the following disks have mounted partitions: /dev/sda ...." I clicked yes,to unmount this partitions so it took me to the partition thing, once there i selected the option to install Ubuntu with Vista and select between them i neach startup, then i clicked forward and went to the username/computer name process, once i finished i continued to the next part, the installation, but i selected to import all of my WIndows VIsta default user data, after that i clicked forward and went to the installation process,i went down stairs to eat soemthing while it finishes,i came back and it was finished,it asked me to reboot so i clicked in Restart Now.

When it tried to boot, appeared an error saying: Error: no such devide found: #################### Grub load(or something like that) grub rescue: and it was a command line, since there i havent been able to boot into vista or Ubuntu,im really scared because is the first thing related to OS installing ive done,so i booted my USB and ran the trial and right now im trying to find out what to do from that trial version.
I just went to the INSTALL UBUNTU 10.04 LTS application under the System>Administration Menu and found out that in the partition phase the Install and allow to select between both systems in eahc startup option,i dont know what to do,i foudn out that my HD has still all its data(MUsic/Videos/Folders/Programs/ect.)its just that i cannot boot from it. Also in GParted it appears as /dev/sda1/ and a warning icon besides it,also when i go into information, thers this warning there [URL]

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Works When Booting From CD But Not In WUBI

May 8, 2010

If I boot Ubuntu 10.04 LTS from CD, it prompts me that I need to install drivers for my NIC wireless card and links me to a generic Broadcom driver. After installation of this driver I can see my wireless network. If I then reboot and boot into a Wubi installation I created, my wireless adapter light stays off and I get a message that Wireless networks are disconnected. Do I need to do something to get the same drivers installed under Wubi, or is this a separate issue?

Ubuntu Installation :: Booting Windows XP (with Wubi) - Stopped Working

Oct 5, 2010

I had Ubuntu installed in Windows XP (with Wubi). One day my motherboard, let's just say stopped working. So, I had to replace my motherboard..., well I bought a new PC, but with the Hard Drive of the old one. When I first started it i got the same boot screen letting me choose between Ubuntu and Windows XP. Well, you can pretty much figure out that none of them worked. So, I installed Windows 7 (as the new configuration is pretty powerful). So, from the boot menu Windows XP was replaced by Windows 7 but still Ubuntu stays there and I can't figure out how to delete it.

Ubuntu :: Creating Dual Boot On 2nd Hdd No Wubi?

Jul 27, 2011

I just reinstalled Ubuntu from the LiveCD onto my second HDD because that was my intent originally, and I very much disliked having to choose my OS a second time before finally booting into Ubuntu.

Is there any way for me to turn these separate installations (Win7 on my first HDD, Ubuntu on my second HDD) into a nice dual boot system without reinstalling Ubuntu or am I going to have to reinstall Ubuntu?

If I do have to reinstall Ubuntu, do I tell the partition manager to load the boot loaders from Ubuntu onto the Windows drive, or do I tell it to load them onto the 100MB windows system partition? I currently just put the entire installation onto my second HDD, and then lost my dual boot option. Now I have to switch first boot device in BIOS to switch between operating systems.

General :: Removing Windows From Dual Boot Using Wubi?

Mar 7, 2011

I've just installed Ubuntu 10.10 using Wubi inside of Windblows and I want to remove Windblows completely. What filestem does Ubuntu use and how do i delete the NTFS partitions and redistribute the free space once partition removed?I only installed through Windblows cos I couldn't get a decent cd burnt to install from there.Just noticed that it looks like the installer has locked up again becuase there is no mouse action. If it has locked up again, i think it may be the cd drive playing up. If i replace it temporarily with a newer drive will Ubunutu kick up a fuss when i out the old one back in. I don't intend using a cd-rom anyway. i just want to use it as a domain controller and file server.

General :: Dual Boot Via Wubi / Dead CD Drive And USB Not Available

Feb 24, 2011

I have my old laptop TravelMate 2413NLMi 1GB RAM. My Cd drive works not well on most of the CDs. I don't know how it picks Win2K3 cd but in that also it gives problem. After some break it picks it up. Installed win 2K3 server successfully from CD Drive. That Cd is old and very good quality. Later I downloaded ubuntu iso 32 /64 both when I heard about dual boot via wubi. I wrote the ubuntu-10.10-desktop-i386 iso on 2 CDs with fastest and slowest speed both on my new laptop but that Cds not worked in the old laptop cd drive. Also my laptop not support USB as boot device in boot sequence. So USB install via usb creator cannot work. I also verified that Iso are fine by installing on someone else's desktop PC. Those cds work well there.

Back to my laptop: Then I copied all Cd content in a folder on desktop of Win2K3 with the help of my new laptop CD drive and usb drive I have. I run the Wubi on the desktop of Win2k3. It run successfully and in the end asked me to reboot. I rebooted. I got the 'Ubuntu' option on booting. I selected and came into it. After that ubuntu splash screen came and then following message displayed on screen

The Error:
mount: mounting /dev/loop1 on //filesystem.squashfs failed: Input/Output error

I got it this is due to the dead/faulty cd drive which ubuntu not able to mount. Now tell me how to install ubuntu further with the UI. Is there some special command to do this going in Grub pressing 'ESC' because the already specified modes have some commands on pressing 'e' there. Some way if I can use iso in that environment copying from USB. I need commands for that. I want to see ubuntu in action. I used lot of my bandwidth to download this iso files but still not able to see it in action.

Ubuntu :: Dual Booting 64 With XP 32?

Dec 8, 2010

I currently have a dual boot system with XP and Ubuntu 10.04 32bit.I need to do a complete reinstall of the XP and am thinking that this would be a good time to transfer Ubuntu to a bigger drive and maybe install the 64bit version. My computer is a few years old but the Core Duo should be able to handle 64bit.

I am wondering though that since I have an old printer, scanner, web cam, etc. whether I would have problems with my system running 64bit. I am also concerned as to whether the software in the library would work properly (if they are not 64bit).There is no pressing reason for me to run 64bit except curiosity so if it will cause problems I can wait.

Ubuntu :: Dual Booting Default ?

Jul 25, 2011

OK im new to linux and Ubuntu, I have windows 7 and Ubuntu dual bootin but ubuntu is the default. I would prefer windows 7 to be the default.

Dont get me wrong i love ubuntu now. great for what i need (a software for linux not windows)

I have followed these instructions

Quote:

You won't be able to change it from Windows. To change it from inside Ubuntu, edit the file /boot/grub/menu.lst.

There will be a line that says

Code:

Simply change '0' to the number of your Windows install.

For example, if your grub has three entries and Windows is the third, change default to 2 (0 is the first entry, not 1).

But in the file it opens there is no text whats so ever so i dont know what to change.
