General :: Dual Boot Via Wubi / Dead CD Drive And USB Not Available

I have my old laptop TravelMate 2413NLMi 1GB RAM. My Cd drive works not well on most of the CDs. I don't know how it picks Win2K3 cd but in that also it gives problem. After some break it picks it up. Installed win 2K3 server successfully from CD Drive. That Cd is old and very good quality. Later I downloaded ubuntu iso 32 /64 both when I heard about dual boot via wubi. I wrote the ubuntu-10.10-desktop-i386 iso on 2 CDs with fastest and slowest speed both on my new laptop but that Cds not worked in the old laptop cd drive. Also my laptop not support USB as boot device in boot sequence. So USB install via usb creator cannot work. I also verified that Iso are fine by installing on someone else's desktop PC. Those cds work well there.
Back to my laptop: Then I copied all Cd content in a folder on desktop of Win2K3 with the help of my new laptop CD drive and usb drive I have. I run the Wubi on the desktop of Win2k3. It run successfully and in the end asked me to reboot. I rebooted. I got the 'Ubuntu' option on booting. I selected and came into it. After that ubuntu splash screen came and then following message displayed on screen
The Error:
mount: mounting /dev/loop1 on //filesystem.squashfs failed: Input/Output error
I got it this is due to the dead/faulty cd drive which ubuntu not able to mount. Now tell me how to install ubuntu further with the UI. Is there some special command to do this going in Grub pressing 'ESC' because the already specified modes have some commands on pressing 'e' there. Some way if I can use iso in that environment copying from USB. I need commands for that. I want to see ubuntu in action. I used lot of my bandwidth to download this iso files but still not able to see it in action.
I have ubuntu 10.4 installed in xp. Ubuntu tells me I have 50 gigs HD space yet the folder tells me I only have 700 mgs and I am getting a warning of not enough space on the computer. My question is. Is this due to windows claiming the space and not allowing enough to be used by ubuntu? If I delete windows and make this computer all linux will that help?
I've just installed Ubuntu 10.10 using Wubi inside of Windblows and I want to remove Windblows completely.What filestem does Ubuntu use and how do i delete the NTFS partitions and redistribute the free space once partition removed?I only installed through Windblows cos I couldn't get a decent cd burnt to install from there.Just noticed that it looks like the installer has locked up again becuase there is no mouse action. If it has locked up again, i think it may be the cd drive playing up. If i replace it temporarily with a newer drive will Ubunutu kick up a fuss when i out the old one back in. I don't intend using a cd-rom anyway. i just want to use it as a domain controller and file server.
I just reinstalled Ubuntu from the LiveCD onto my second HDD because that was my intent originally, and I very much disliked having to choose my OS a second time before finally booting into Ubuntu.
Is there any way for me to turn these separate installations (Win7 on my first HDD, Ubuntu on my second HDD) into a nice dual boot system without reinstalling Ubuntu or am I going to have to reinstall Ubuntu?
If I do have to reinstall Ubuntu, do I tell the partition manager to load the boot loaders from Ubuntu onto the Windows drive, or do I tell it to load them onto the 100MB windows system partition? I currently just put the entire installation onto my second HDD, and then lost my dual boot option. Now I have to switch first boot device in BIOS to switch between operating systems.
just installed Ubuntu 10.10 (if I am not wrong) on my XP computer using Wubi. The problem now is that whenever I boot up, there is no sign of Ubuntu. The computer just goes straight into Windows XP. I checked the C: drive (main hard disk) and I see a folder called "ubuntu" and I am quite sure that Ubuntu is supposed to boot from there right? Could someone please help me out? i started ubuntu from 9.04 now using 10.10 on my laptop. problem started when my laptop motherboard got bad beyond repair, and i had installed ubuntu 10.10 on it along with windows 7 (grub, dual boot). now i have pc running windows 7 and installed ubuntu 10.10 using wubi. i want all the settings of my laptop ubuntu 10.10 (programs installed, themes, softwares other configurations etc) to be transferred to this new ubuntu (installed using wubi) on my pc. how to do that? i have attached my laptop hard disk to my pc and am able to boot that installation on my pc, but now i have decided to remove laptop hard disk and use the same settings on pc hard disk.
I'm trying to install Ubuntu on Windows XP as a dual boot using Wubi, but whenever I try to install it I get an error message that says: An error occurred: Permission denied For more information, please see the log file: c:docume-1lanzarolocals-1 empwubi-10.04.1-rev190.log Does anyone know what this means and if I can fix it?
I've decided that I want to use another, smaller, hard drive for my OS and I'd like to clone /dev/sda onto /dev/sdc. I want it to be an exact clone except my partition for my "/home" will be smaller (since there's not room for it). I was gonna try with dd but I'm not sure if I should build the partition table and use dd-command on one partition at the time? Will this then include GRUB boot loader and will it be working properly?
Do I have to clone the disk completely for it to boot properly? I'm not sure how or where GRUB places itself on disks as you install it. Can I perhaps copy the partitions one by one and then install GRUB from CD afterwards? Should I leave some unallocated space somewhere in between the partitions as I build and clone them?
Have older system, self-built around 2000 or so. My plan is to optimize the system for speed and utility, upgrade the OS from W2000 Pro to XP Pro, and include dual boot so as to install some version/distro (?) of Linux to learn on. Present system: X86 based (32 bit), using a P4, 1.8 GHz/400 MHz fsb, with 512mb of DDR RAM installed, can upgrade to 2 gigs total.Shuttle MV42 motherboard, including onboard video and sound (S3 Graphics ProSavage DDR P4M266/VIA 8751/8233 chipset, VIA AC'97 Audio Controller, 2.2 compliant)
If I should decide to use the available 160 gig drive as a dual boot system, in order to install both XP and some version of Linux, how should I set it up? How many partitions will XP and Linux need or work with best? How much space for each OS? What file systems? Should I format/partition it with the existing W2000 OS? What comes first, the chicken or the egg? (XP or Linux?) I have read somewhere that it matters which OS is installed first, due to boot records being overwritten by successive OS installs. I plan to keep W2000 on the first HDD at least until I move my files over to XP. Will I need to switch the master/slave designations after installing XP and Linux on the new drive, since I will want to boot from that drive?
My Toshiba Satellite 5205-S705 laptop with Win XP Home sp3 has a non-working cd drive, is riddled with viruses, and isn't capable of booting to a USB drive. (please no comments about paperweights etc., it's all I have!) I want to install a Linux dual-boot version that is heavy on antivirus scanning support. Since I can't boot to an .iso disk, is there any other way to do this? I can transfer files to it via USB thumbdrive or download via Internet.
I recently installed another Linux on my USB drive. All works well and can boot into Ubuntu or PeppermeinOS. However, the system will not boot at all unless the USB is plugged in.
I am not smart enough to figure out how to install Fedora 14 correctly. I have an older computer with 2 20gb drives. On the first drive (sda) I have Windows XP, and on the 2nd drive (sdb) I am trying to install Fedora 14. The catch is that I would like to put Grub and the MBR on the first drive so that when the computer boots, it asks whether to load Windows XP or Fedora. I know I have done it with Fedora 13 in the past, but have forgotten how to do it. How to accomplish this in Anaconda for Fedora 14?
I am currently using an Eee PC 1005HA with Ubuntu installed. I'd like to dual boot with Windows XP. How can I do this without a CD drive? I have an external hard drive that I used to install Ubuntu in the first place and a Windows XP install CD with key.
I have a DELL Latitude E6410 64bit with Core i5. My goal is to have my Windows 7 encrypted and my Ubuntu 10.4 unencrypted and to be able to boot them both. So here are the details. I installed windows 7 first. Then I installed Ubuntu and Grub was in the MBR. Then I started TrueCrypt 5 from Windows 7 and encrypted the system partition, not the whole drive! So the TrueCrypt loader overwrote the GRUB in the MBR. Now when I start my computer, I see the prompt for password from the TrueCrypt boot loader. If I enter my password, windows is loaded.
The other option at the beginning is to press Esc and that should offer me other boot loaders. Well, on my DELL there's this Recovery partition and it boots immediately. How I can integrate the Grub in the process. I know, that there are many howto-s on the internet about this problem, but I haven't found a solution for grub2 and windows 7! It is indeed different, because GRUB does not have menu.lst any more and Windows 7 does not have boot.ini!
Here some more info about my partitions:
Code: /dev/sda1 fat16 DellUtility /dev/sda2 ntfs RECOVERY /dev/sda3 unknown /dev/sda4 extended - /dev/sda5 ext4 ubuntu - /dev/sda6 linux-swap Windows 7 in installed on /dev/sda3 and is encrypted, that's why the file system is unknown. Ubuntu 10.4 is installed on /dev/sda5
I know of three options to deal with the problem:
Solution 1 Install GRUB to the PBR (partition boot record) of the linux partition - that's /dev/sda5 in my case. Then, it should be possible to load GRUB when you press Esc in the TrueCrypt boot loader.
solution 2 Make Windows load Linux. Copy the PBR of the linux partiotion to a file and copy the file to windows. Then add an entry in the windows loader to include the linux loader file.
solution 3 Make GRUB load TrueCrypt's boot loader. Make a backup of the MBR (containing the TrueCrypt's loader). Add Truecrypt's MBR as a chain boot loader in GRUB. Finally, rewrite the MBR using this new GRUB.
I did install GRUB to my PBR with Code: from the live CD: first mount /dev/sda5 to /media/ubuntu sudo grub-install --root-directory=/media/ubuntu /dev/sda5
I also tried with Code: from inside ubuntu: > grub grub> find /boot/grub/stage1 hd0,4 grub> root (hd0,4) grub> setup (hd0,4) grub> quit
After one of these, I am able to boot my ubuntu after restart. But then I reboot and load windows, reboot once again and press Esc in order to try to boot ubuntu again, and then I don't see the grub loader list, but the "grub> " shell prompt instead! I thought that I will be able to see the grub loader also after many restarts, not just the first time. Why this configuration "breaks" after 1-2 reboots? Maybe the problem is that my ubuntu is on an extended partition (sda4)?
I have my computer set up with 2 40 GB drives (IDE) and 1 500 GB(SATA). One 40 GB drive for Windows XP, 1 40 for Ubuntu and the 500 GB for storage for both (formatted NTFS).
I am building a computer for my wife and want to use 1 80 GB IDE drive instead of 2 40s and a 320 GB IDE for storage (the storage drive is irrelevant to my issue). These are all parts I have laying around. I installed XP and partitioned the 80 gig into 2 40 gig partitions during the installation.
When I go to install ubuntu, it shows me all the partitions of both drives but gives me no option (other than manual) for using the 2nd half of the 80 gig for installation.
I need to know how to set it up manually. It gives me a slider to divide the 2nd half of the 80 GB drive into 2, but I don't know what size to make them. Also when I look at my 40 GB drive from my computer it show 3 divisions: "39 GB ext4", "ext 1.7 GB" and "1.7 GB swap space".
I just got a 1.5 tb I want to do a dual boot fedora 10 and vista. I don't have vista now. Can I install fedora 10 on a 200 gig partition and install vista on the rest when I buy it later?
I currently have Windows 7 installed on my laptop and I would like to dual boot w/ Fedora on the same hdd.I have two NTSF partitions, I shrunk my D drive 50GB for ext4 & swap.I've tried both liveusb-created & unetbootin to create a bootable USB to install Fedora.Anaconda starts up and I get through most of the install configuration, I set up GRUB & the partitions. Once I proceed to the next screen I get missing ISO image 9660 error My laptop doesn't have a DVD drive. It seems like a lot of people are getting this error, but I have found no concrete solution though.
How do I put the image on the drive? Windows can't read ext4 and I haven't been able to find a program that can.I have a USB to SATA adapter that I could hook up a DVD-ROM drive too, but I don't know if fedora will pick up on it.
I have a laptop with a small (dual boot) hard drive. It is a dual boot with Windows XP and Open Suse 11.1. I want to remove Suse Linux but keep the Windows side. I need to keep that Windows drive just the way it is. I have OpenSUSE 11.2 installed in another laptop and want to keep them separate. I don't want to damage the proprietary program on the windows side. My challenge is I do not have aa Windows install CD, I do have the recovery disk that came with the Laptop, but this DOES NOT include the Proprietary program I want to keep. Is there a way to remove Linux from this dual boot drive without erasing Windows?
I've been wanting to start using Linux for years now and after doing some research on which distro to use, I've decided to give it a try with openSUSE and ordered a DVD copy from Novel last night. Needless to say, I'm a newbie to Linux. I'm building a new computer with two identical hard drives and I'd like to install openSUSE and XP on them and hence make a dual boot system. This is also going to be my first time setting up a dual boot. So, while I'm waiting for the openSUSE DVD to arrive, how to actually set it all up?
I'm running into some difficulties installing Ubuntu on an old mac ibook G4 I was given. sepcs are fine (1. something Ghz processor, 700mb RAM)--yet the internal drive and CD player are dead. I installed MAC OS 10.4 PPC on a firewiredrive and boot from there. But how can I install Ubuntu ? I understood that I need to use the non supported PPC version which I downloaded and have burned a CD of. I have an external CD player which works. The Cd's appears in the firewire mac os, and the external FW disk still has 200 Gigs free.I plan to let the instaler choose this freespace to create the partitions, but how do I get to the installer ?
When i boot with the CD in the drive and press C, nothing happens. when I press options / alt, ubuntu the ubuntu install CD doesn't show up I've read that I must use open firmware, and found some key combination, but this doesn't change anything (command, option O F). I have Gparted if the 200gig partition needs to be repartitioned. I'm trying to install Ubuntu as a dual boot on this old ibook G4
The thing is i want to have windows xp on my internal drive and ubuntu on the external. Not very hard but i want it so that i can choose what to boot when i start my computer and i also want to store other things then ubuntu on my external drive so i can use it in xp also
The reason i want ubuntu for is to use it while watching movies or chatting osv and use xp for games and my animation programs since they tend to be quite hard to get to work on ubuntu.
Win-7 Ubuntu Dual Boot, Drive Presence Issue I recently built up a new computer and set it up for dual-boot with Win7 and Ubuntu. Initially I had some issues with the boot management but I discovered that GRUB works well and Paragon's Partition Manager does not. I reloaded Ubuntu using GRUB and got the system working exactly as I would like it to. Several weeks later I volunteered to assist my brother-in-law's family with getting their Unbutu system working properly with a new Brother MFC295CN printer. I brought the printer home so that I could work with it on my system.
I did get the printer to work correctly but in the process I had to reload Ubuntu because I made a few mistakes on my way to success. When I reloaded Ubuntu, I accidentally loaded it onto my system's second drive, drive F. Before, I had Ubuntu in a partition on drive C. Ubuntu works from the F drive and GRUB allows me to boot either Win 7 or Ubuntu, as desired. I will note that the earlier version of Ubuntu on drive C has been removed although the partition is still there. GRUB shows entries for this second copy of Ubuntu along with Win 7 and the entry for the functioning Ubuntu OS.
Here's where I am getting into trouble. Initially, everything looked fine. Win 7 worked, Ubuntu worked. Then, after a reboot to Win7, I noticed that my F drive was missing. I searched all around the system controls, tried loading new hardware, etc, etc, but the drive did not show up anywhere. Rebooting into Ubuntu showed that the drive was in fact still there and all the date in the large data partition was still there. Using Ubuntu's partition manager I discovered that the data partition was not enabled. I enabled the partition and rebooted back into Win7. No go.
The F drive was not present. My next step was to try Paragon's Partition Manager software, which I have a paid-for copy of. It would not see the F drive either. Using the Paragon recovery disk I had made earlier with the Paragon software, I restarted the system. The recovery software saw both drives correctly and the partitions were set up correctly. I ran the boot corrector software but I did not mess around too much as earlier experience had indicated that some of the Paragon features do not work well with Ubuntu. I shut down and rebooted into Win7. Success! The F drive was there.
But later, when I restarted the system the F drive was gone again. I tried a few things then rebooted using the recovery disk again. As before, on the next restart the F drive was present. I didn't take the time to reboot the system twenty times, but it seems apparent that something in the boot records is preventing Win7 from seeing the F drive correctly unless I boot from the Paragon recovery disk and then boot Win7.
No knowing a lot about what goes into a boot record and how either GRUB or boot.ini manage things, I am at a loss as to why I'm seeing this inconsistency with the F drive. A probable solution would be to remove both the second (old Ubuntu) partition on the C drive and the Ubuntu partion on the F drive and reload Unbutu all over. This would put me back to where I was in the beginning. However, this seems a bit inelegant as all the other attributes of the system are working well, is there a better way to address the problem?
i installed Ubuntu 10.10 on our second hard drive, and i cant dual boot it. it is set as slave, so should i set it to master, or do i need to hit a key @ initial boot. ive gotten a list that shows vista on it, which is on C: , but not ubuntu, which is on F:.

I have Grub2 installed, which provides me the choice at boot to start either Ubuntu or XP. This currently works fine.
I want to clone this hhd and transfer to a new, larger hhd, and have several questions, since I don't want to make a mistake with something so crtical. 1) Which software is generally considered the safest, most reliable and easiest to use (dd, Gddrescue, Clonezilla, Paragon, Macrum Reflect, Easeus, Drive Image XML, or something else)?
2) Which software will be able to copy and include both operating systems in the partitions to be cloned?
3) Will that software change the booting process or options in the cloned copy in any way? I've read where using Easeus corrupts Grub2 and thus requires re-installing Grub2!
Are there any other concerns, considerations or factors I need to consider in cloning the hhd; e.g. prior formatting an external hhd, and with what file system? I've also read where FAT32 would be the choice, but don't really know for sure.
I had Maverick installed and it was running nicely. I decided to upgrade to Natty Narwhal using the update manager. After doing that, Natty Narwhal wouldn't boot. I don't remember what the errors were. I decided to uninstall the wubi installation of Natty Narwhal and start over again. When I tried to install Natty Narwhal, I got the option to boot into Ubuntu, but when I did, I got the following errors:
Then it goes back to the boot screen. I'm trying to install with wubi on Windows 7. The upgrade must have messed something up, but you'd think it would be wiped out after uninstalling. Oh, yeah, I tried to install Linux Mint with mint4win and got similar errors. Anything I can do about this?
After going back & forth between win7b & F10 installs, I can't get both to live on the same hard disk for dual booting anymore. win7 complains about fedora's GPT disk being unacceptable for installation. win7 blows away fedora's GPT partitions when it installs. Fedora doesn't recognize win7 partitions when it installs. I can't specify exact partition boundaries with windows even if I know what they are, and I can't seem to find any info how to do it in parted either. I have win7 installed in partition 3 in a known location on disk, but if I reinstall f10 (again), it's going to blow away the win7 boot data on the disk. How do I tell grub where to find the chainloader thingy? Can that still even be used? win7 no longer uses ntldr, and I haven't found an updated procedure for this new boot method.
