Oct 14, 2010I am writting a script to allow uploading of certain files. I want to limit the files by their filename and mime type, and by making sure the two match up.The first thing I need to do is make sure I've got all the mime types I need added. I have never done this before, but I understand that 'file' (which is what PHP's mime-type finding is based off of) uses magic databases that tell at which point in the file should have signatures of the filetype.
My trouble started when I was unable to determine the filetype of any of my video files. Currently, I have some .MOV and .MP4 files that I am using to test.

Jan 24, 2011I want to be able to play a video file on my pda(Tungsten T5) but from memory the only video file i have seen playable on it was the asf file that is used when it starts up/reboots. I tried other file types in the past that were suggested in maybe a manual or forum or something but they never worked/played. I think it is because of the player installed and i tried installing another player but from memory that didn't install properly or just did not play anything. So if anyone knows of a way to convert files maybe using winff or mencoder i would love that info. I have been googling and have found nothing specific to what i am asking. I do not see anything in winff to convert to asf and cannot remember ever using mencoder.

Dec 10, 2010Using gnome terminal (Ubuntu 10.10), is there a way to execute the default application associated to a file type, only by typing its name, as it is possible with Windows ?
For example, say I create a mime type associated to every file with the pattern *.abc. Lets say I associate this file type to application 'my_app'.
If I have file 'my_file.abc' in current folder, what I want is that when I enter only 'my_file.abc' at the prompt, it executes 'my_app' feeding it with 'my_file.abc' as first argument. (assuming of course 'my_app' is in the path)

May 10, 2011I will try to keep this straight-forward. Yesterday I was able to access an ubuntu 10.10 (edubuntu) desktop using the tightVNC viewer that I installed on my Vista laptop. I never set anything up on the desktop it just worked and I didn't question it.
Today I get the following error on the viewer software: "Server did not offer supported security type" The only thing that has changed was that I installed a bunch of updates yesterday afternoon, but I am not sure what changed.

Dec 13, 2009I'm using Debian 503 Lenny, Gnome. My machine, She-Beast, is a 2001 Compaq Presorry-o, 1100GHz Celery. With every, that is, E V E R Y, attempt to install any .deb, it fails. When I 2x click on the .deb icon, or when I r-click -->Open with archive manager, I get a dialog window:
"Could not open "(filename).deb". Archive type not supported."
If I use root terminal, dpkg -i, similar responses come up.

Feb 4, 2011In my system around 73gb(pc-desktop) i have,1 primary partition(windows)-25gb, 1-extended partition(remaining gb) 3 logical partitions were there in (under) extended partition in one of the logical partition is d:drive. in my hard disk d: drive is -/dev/sda5
previosly i was fat -file system , (d:drive-/dev/sda5), i remember i changed the d: drive(d:drive-/dev/sda5) file system to ext4file system ,with following command using terminal
After doing(changing the file system)this one ,i couldnt see the d:drive data
By doing that
1q) Did i reformatted the partition? i think the new filesystem(ext4) has no knowledge of the data that was on it when it had a FAT filesystem.
2q) How to do undo operation,i tried to change the filesystem type to fat/ntfs in terminal using command --sudo mkfs -t FAT /dev/sda5.
Result:its showing text message-'mkfs.FAT: No such file or directory'(not in single quote)

Aug 7, 2010I have windows 7 64 bits and i'm trying to install ubuntu 10.04 amd64. The installation was good but when i'm trying to boot on ubuntu i have a black screen with a message "mode not supported".
I've looked for the problem on google. The solution is to change the frequency of the monitor. Mine supports only 75htz max and on the error message I have 77htz, what's why it's not supported.
The problem that to change the frequency for lunux i have to be logged in linux in order to type commands in the terminal.
But I can't see a thing, only the message about the mode not supported, so I can't type anything.
I found some solutions here but i can't do what they ask, because I can't boot and the message doesn't disappear. [url]

Jan 25, 2011If I take out the existing video card and put in another one of a different type (but not a different brand), how does Ubuntu behave? I know what Windows typically does. Windows starts up the screen using a default video driver which is at least 1024 by 768 and then asks you what this new bit of hardware is and asks where the drivers are. I'm pretty sure Ubuntu has default drivers of its own, but I don't know what their resolution is.

Everything it's fine, but I would like to use the dual monitor for my work, and so I decided to ask to buy me a video card, since what I have now is an onboard graphic that doesn't allow me to do it. I don't need to play games (well I don't think my boss will be happy about it ), and I would rather go for a not expensive solution. But I have some doubts regarding the compatibility with my linux. I found several things on the web, but nothing regarding the video cards that I individuated. If the card is auto detected, it would be better of course.
The cards I was interested are:
ASUS RADEON HD4350 1GB DDR2
SAPPHIRE RADEON HD5450 512MB DDR3
But then i've seen on the web you might have problems with ATI in linux and so I went looking also for Nvidia which I found is generally better implemented under linux: ASUS GEFORCE GT 210 512MB DDR2
PALIT GEFORCE GT 220 SUPER 512MB DDR2 I don't have many models among which to choose, because of some conventions at my workplace. The tables of compatibility with ubuntu that I found are all related with much more expensive models, or models that I don't have in my lists. Could somebody tell me if one (or more) of the cards mentioned above work under ubuntu 10.6 64-bit? I have a Hewlett Packard system with:

Aug 7, 2010I have just upgraded to 11.3 and work in icewm (I have kde apps installed but no other desktops). When I boot up the computer it gives me this console error message:

Aug 25, 2010I am trying to find the maximum supported resolution of my video card by using xrandr. My card is an NVidia GeForce Go 7300 (in a laptop). The official documentation does not list specific resolutions that are supported. My laptop display is detected as "AUO" in the NVidia X Server Settings dialog (Ubuntu 10.04 amd64) and has a native resolution of 1280x800. However, I would like to know what is the maximum resolution that I could use on a display with the VGA adapter irrespective of whether the laptop's display is on. This is what I get from xrandr: Screen 0: minimum 512 x 384, current 1280 x 800, maximum 2304 x 864 default connected 1280x800+0+0 0mm x 0mm

I am guessing the maximum width of 2304 would be for using TwinView with the laptop's 1280-width display next to a 1024 CRT or similar. Surely these cannot be the only supported resolutions. I would like to use a LCD display of width somewhere around 1600 pixels (in particular while turning off the laptop's screen so as to use the external LCD as the primary display) if possible.
Hardware :: Ubuntu Repeatedly Asks For Video Type
Feb 23, 2010Every time I go to start up my system, it asks me for my video type and says the video type '31b' is not a recognized video type. Another important thing to note is that I just recently had to do a fsck after my system refused to boot out of nowhere. Most other things on the computer run fine except that Compiz or Emerald will crash slightly more often, but can be fixed by reloading the window manager. Compiz and Emerald did crash every so often before the fsck, so it is not that out of the ordinary.

Does this meet the required 4 ports mentioned for alike cameras in the forum posting. If not, I have one of these.. Is this what they are talking about. I have just started thinking about this again and am not sure if I'm asking the right question. I don't want to go buying a bunch of hardware I can not use.
