Ubuntu Networking :: Wifi Worked For A While Then Stopped Working - Can't Get Online

Jun 18, 2011

I had 10.10, and all was well. Then I installed natty, and WiFi worked for a while, then stopped working. I later went back to 10.10, and WiFi still isn't working. The WiFi icon in the top bar looks like it's scanning. But it just keeps on scanning, continuously. Then it asks me for the password, so it obviously connects to something if it knows the network needs a password.

But here's the weird thing, my router also creates a BT Open Network, which I think is some pay service that BT offer, apparently through anyone's wifi since it's not password protected. I can connect to that. But not the actual network that leads to the internet. This happened a while back, and of course I can't install any updates on it because I can't get online. I am writing this from XP on the same computer, and XP can connect to the network no problem.

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Worked Before Update But Suddenly Stopped Working

Oct 14, 2010

I have an HP a670y desktop computer using the included wireless antenna (looks like a big Sorry game piece). I am running Ubuntu 10.04 x64 dual booted with Windows Vista x64. I haven't had internet for a while but just got it today and decided to do some updating in both Windows and Ubuntu. It had detected my router and I copied and pasted the WEP key then it asked for my password, but my keyboard wasn't connected so I clicked cancel for the password window and it connected anyway.

I opened the Synaptic package manager and started downloading some updates while I did some browsing on the internet. I had restarted my computer when the updates were done and it asked again for my WEP key. I copied and pasted just as I did before and entered my password and after it tried to connect it asked for my password again. I thought maybe the internet was down so I decided to boot up Windows and it connected right away. I wonder if one of my updates messed something up. Has anyone else had this happen?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Webcam Stopped Working Properly In 10.04?

Jul 2, 2010

I'm using the 10.04 Netbook Edition on an ASUS EeePC 1005HA. Earlier, I had 9.10 Netbook Remix installed. Under 9.10NR, the webcam worked wonderfully in Cheese. Once I upgraded to 10.04NE, the webcam became sluggish to the point where it is now unusable. In video mode it captures about 1 frame per five seconds. Under 9.10NR, it regularly captured 60 fps.

Did the driver package for webcams change significantly between 9.10 and 10.04? I can't think of anything else that would cause this issue due to an OS upgrade.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Webcam Not Recognized By 11.4 - Worked Fine With 11.3

Mar 24, 2011

I have a Z_Star webcam, which used to work perfectly well with OpenSUSE 11.3. At some time after updating to 11.4 (Tumbleweed, in fact) the device wasn't recognized any longer. Skype and Kopete both show that I have no available webcam device. The lsusb command (see below) shows the camera is there. What am I missing?

Ubuntu Installation :: Update Manager Stopped Worked (http Error 127)?

Jan 12, 2011

I have 10.04 installed and Update Manager has worked fine for months, until about 2 weeks ago. When I ask Update Manager to update its indexes, I get this error message returned almost immediately

"Method http has died unexpectedly!
Sub-process http returned an error code (127)
Method http has died unexpectedly!
Sub-process http returned an error code (127)

The internet connection is working fine on this machine. I have another 10.04 machine sitting right next to the problem computer, and Update Manager works fine on that machine. I verified that all settings are the same between the 2 machines in these areas

1. All Update Manager SETTINGS (including SOFTWARE SOURCES)

2. System -> Preferences -> NETWORK PROXY (which is a Direct Internet Connection)

3. System -> Preferences -> NETWORK CONNECTION

It appears to me that the connection to Ubuntu repositories is failing but I can't find anything different between the 2 machines.

Ubuntu Networking :: 'Belkin N Wireless USB Adapter' Worked And Stopped To Work

Apr 23, 2011

I've been using Windows all my life (and still have to use it at work) but I made the big leap yesterday and installed Ubuntu on my personal machine (at last). With my "Windows-centric" mind, there are a million things that I still don't get, but I must say the community and forums look quite impressive and easy to access (kudos! ). I am testing this today! My current problem is with the wireless adapter. I have a Belkin N Wireless USB adapter (FSD8053v3) and Belkin, of course, doesn't make linux drivers. When I installed Ubuntu, it recognized it automatically and I could connect to my network, but navigation was very slow so I tried to install Belkin windows drivers using ndiswrapper. It worked immediately, and navigation was very fast. However after a reboot, I lost the connection, I can't even see any of the neighbouring networks.

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Suddenly Stopped Working AND Rfkill Command Not Working

Jul 13, 2011

When originally installing 11.04 I had problems getting my Ralink 5390 wireless card to work.

Today my computer froze completely and I had to turn it off via the power switch. When I turned it back on, wireless was no longer recognized! My iPod can connect to the network just fine, so it must be an Ubuntu problem. There are no problems with my ethernet connection either.

I researched this and found several threads about blocking and unblocking wireless devices using the rfkill command. Well, unfortunately for me the rfkill command doesn't work. When I type sudo rfkill list or sudo rfkill unblock all, nothing happens; it just returns me to my bash prompt. I even tried uninstalling and reinstalling rfkill...nothing.

Ubuntu :: Webcam Not Working In 10.04 LTS ?

Jul 29, 2010

I installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS one week ago without any problems on my Packard Bell EasyNote MX67-P-023 notebook.

Everything works fine except my webcam "USB 2.0 Camera"

lsusb: Bus 001 Device 004: ID 0402:5602 ALi Corp. Video Camera Controller

In programs like aMsn, Emesene, or Cheese it's recognized as "USB 2.0 Camera"

For example(I'm translating menus from italian) in aMSN->preferences->Other->Audio Video:
- select device box: "v4l2: USB 2.0 Camera"
- select channel box:" ALi m5602"
- and in the video box where image should appear: "unable capture from device"

In the other programs it shows a completely blank screen, or sometimes a blank screen with some strange uncomprensible white-grey stripes.

Ubuntu :: Webcam Is Not Working On Skype And Cheese?

Jan 18, 2010

I'm running Ubuntu 9.10. I can't seem to get skype to work. See, the person I'm chatting with can receive video and audio, I can receive audio, but I cannot see them, even when they engage their webcam.

My cheese can take pictures from my webcam, but I can't see the screen of the webcam before I take the picture, it's only black, and when I click on the take the picture, it'll take it, and display it correctly, but the screen is black. Now, I just dled camorama, but it's saying "Could not connect to video device C/dev/video0). please check connection." I don't know what this means.

My lsusb says:

Bus 005 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub[code]....
The Ricoh Webcam is a built in cam, but it doesn't work either. I have an external cam that used to work, but the cam works, it's just the display that seems effed up.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Check If Your Webcam Is Working ?

I ran across this command the other day, and found it useful for a quick check to see if your webcam is working. If you have a webcam and have mplayer and mencoder installed just open a terminal and type:

Code:

And it should open a window with you webcam running. I would think it would work with any webcam. Just for the record, I am running on a Dell Inspiron 1521 laptop with a build-in cam. You can find this in mplayer man pages, but there are 191 pages even if you send the man pages to a text file. mplayer is a very powerful program and there are many more things you can do with it.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: 10.04 - How To Get Logitech Webcam Working

Sep 21, 2010

Just found my old Logitech webcam again, and tried to get it to work on 10.04. Somehow this doesn't work. I tried searching the forum, but did not get an answer to my situation.

Here is what I can see:
After connecting (or rebooting), dmesg shows the following lines
uvcvideo: Found UVC 1.00 device <unnamed> (046d:08cc)
input: UVC Camera (046d:08cc) as /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1d.7/usb1/1-1/1-1:1.0/input/input5
usbcore: registered new interface driver uvcvideo

And that's it. No message that cam was registered to /dev/video<x>. I should add that I already have another cam (Philips) that works and is registered to /dev/video0, and I also installed a Hauppauge PVR350 card that also gets registered to various /dev/video<y> files. Why the Logitech cam won't register? I'm guessing I can't do anything until this cam has its own /dev/video<x>, right?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: External Webcam Is Not Working

Jan 17, 2011

I just recently purchased a GTMax Flexible 12 Mega Pixel High Resolution w/ 4 LED Light & Microphone USB PC Webcam - Black from amazon.com, and attempted to use it in Ubuntu 8.10, but can't get it to work. The LEDs come on when I plug it into my laptop's usb port, but no video. I've tested it with Cheese Webcam Booth, and also an external website, but it doesn't work.Of course, though, I'm not entirely sure its really the webcam, since Cheese Webcam Booth seems to be turning on my built-in laptop webcam which might be interfering with it, and also the tokbox widget in the website doesn't completely load anyway in ubuntu, webcam or no, so I'm thinking that maybe its only Cheese and tokbox which are not working.

My OS is Ubuntu 8.10 64 bit. Cheese Webcam Booth also does not work with my interal cam, though it turns it on, and I've confirmed it (i.e. cheese + internal webcam) does work in my ubuntu 9.10 32 bit which is installed in a multiboot on the same computer.

I would like to get these problems resolved, ASAP, as I need to have my webcam (at least one of them, preferably both) working in ubuntu 8.10, for that's the OS I use the most often.I will note that my laptop is a Dell Studio 1535, and since I've installed Ubuntu 8.10 on it, I've had a number of other hardware issues with it on ubuntu, but I've been able to get most of them resolved a long time ago, but the webcam thing is one that I haven't got to work since I first installed ubuntu (which was God knows how long ago).
