i recently installed guvcview on xubuntu and the window just shows up as a black screen with nothing and according to the uvc website my Logitech QuickCam Communicate Deluxe is supported by linux when i start up guvc the webcam's light turns on so i think its working
View 1 RepliesMy computer has been running well for a couple of years with Ubuntu and the Gnome desktop. I use a very cheap webcam from PCWorld PC Line 1.3 Mega Pixels with Cheese and Skype which worked on Ubuntu. The new Ubuntu Unity desktop seems most unintuitive and reading that Ubuntu may not include Gnome for the next release is my reason to make the change to Debian. I am aware Ubuntu is a Debian derivative.
I have installed Debian Squeeze and everything is working properly apart from the webcam. When I open Cheese the webcam works but very slowly although it will not capture video. When I open Cheese > Preferences, I see the Device listed as USB 2.0 Camera (/dev/video0) but greyed out. When I open Skype > Options > Video I see the same greyed out listing but no image appears in the test area.

I'm using the 10.04 Netbook Edition on an ASUS EeePC 1005HA. Earlier, I had 9.10 Netbook Remix installed. Under 9.10NR, the webcam worked wonderfully in Cheese. Once I upgraded to 10.04NE, the webcam became sluggish to the point where it is now unusable. In video mode it captures about 1 frame per five seconds. Under 9.10NR, it regularly captured 60 fps.
Did the driver package for webcams change significantly between 9.10 and 10.04? I can't think of anything else that would cause this issue due to an OS upgrade.
The web cam on my Dell Inspiron mini 10 doesn't work properly. Cheese only takes very dark pictures but no video and the main screen stays dark all the time. Skype transmits a very dark image, too. How can that be tweaked.

In programs like aMsn, Emesene, or Cheese it's recognized as "USB 2.0 Camera"
For example(I'm translating menus from italian) in aMSN->preferences->Other->Audio Video:
- select device box: "v4l2: USB 2.0 Camera"
- select channel box:" ALi m5602"
- and in the video box where image should appear: "unable capture from device"
In the other programs it shows a completely blank screen, or sometimes a blank screen with some strange uncomprensible white-grey stripes.

I'm running Ubuntu server with SIP service and apache and when i try to edit config files with vi it gets messy.On the bottom of the screen it would not indicate if I'm in backup mode or not. I won't same changes, and it messes up the layout when you use arrow keys to move between the lines. Also sometimes when I use arrow keys it will insert capital A, B, C or D.

I've tried both 10.10, 11.04 beta 2, and now 11.04 release.With the release I just installed, it seemed OK till reboot-after-install, at which point nothing came up. I rebooted several times and just got errors and kernel panics in the ATI video driver. I also saw a lot of these messages:"udevd[80]: worker [XXX] did not accept message -1 (Connection refused), kill it" URL...
I had download updates on, I'm trying again with a clean install without updates. (Although, I said don't download while installing, and it says it is downloading language packs...?)Now, I also had issues with 10.10, where it would intermittently boot and fail to get video, I'd just be at a tty, and have to reboot and try again. I found it usually got video if I had just booted Windows (XP Pro SP3) beforehand, and not otherwise So what's going on there? Something up with the actual video card? I want to run Gnome anyways, is there a way I can specify that during the install?At any rate, if I can't get 11.04 working properly, I'll have to run 10.10, which I didn't want to do. I'm starting from scratch and wish to start from 11.04 if at all possible.
So yesterday I upgraded to 11.04 from 10.10 and now when I enter Ubuntu only my background image appears. No files, programs, or anything. It worked right after it rebooted to finish the upgrade but when I turned my computer on this morning I got nothing but background.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm running Ubuntu 9.10. I can't seem to get skype to work. See, the person I'm chatting with can receive video and audio, I can receive audio, but I cannot see them, even when they engage their webcam.
My cheese can take pictures from my webcam, but I can't see the screen of the webcam before I take the picture, it's only black, and when I click on the take the picture, it'll take it, and display it correctly, but the screen is black. Now, I just dled camorama, but it's saying "Could not connect to video device C/dev/video0). please check connection." I don't know what this means.

The Ricoh Webcam is a built in cam, but it doesn't work either. I have an external cam that used to work, but the cam works, it's just the display that seems effed up.

I ran across this command the other day, and found it useful for a quick check to see if your webcam is working. If you have a webcam and have mplayer and mencoder installed just open a terminal and type:

And it should open a window with you webcam running. I would think it would work with any webcam. Just for the record, I am running on a Dell Inspiron 1521 laptop with a build-in cam. You can find this in mplayer man pages, but there are 191 pages even if you send the man pages to a text file. mplayer is a very powerful program and there are many more things you can do with it.
Just found my old Logitech webcam again, and tried to get it to work on 10.04. Somehow this doesn't work. I tried searching the forum, but did not get an answer to my situation.
Here is what I can see:
After connecting (or rebooting), dmesg shows the following lines

I should add that I already have another cam (Philips) that works and is registered to /dev/video0, and I also installed a Hauppauge PVR350 card that also gets registered to various /dev/video<y> files. Why the Logitech cam won't register? I'm guessing I can't do anything until this cam has its own /dev/video<x>, right?
I've upgraded to 10.10. Before I did in 10.04 my webcam stopped working. I have an Acer AspireOne netbook ZG5 model. I want to use mousetrap with my webcam, so I would really like to have it back.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI just recently purchased a GTMax Flexible 12 Mega Pixel High Resolution w/ 4 LED Light & Microphone USB PC Webcam - Black from amazon.com, and attempted to use it in Ubuntu 8.10, but can't get it to work. The LEDs come on when I plug it into my laptop's usb port, but no video. I've tested it with Cheese Webcam Booth, and also an external website, but it doesn't work.Of course, though, I'm not entirely sure its really the webcam, since Cheese Webcam Booth seems to be turning on my built-in laptop webcam which might be interfering with it, and also the tokbox widget in the website doesn't completely load anyway in ubuntu, webcam or no, so I'm thinking that maybe its only Cheese and tokbox which are not working.
My OS is Ubuntu 8.10 64 bit. Cheese Webcam Booth also does not work with my interal cam, though it turns it on, and I've confirmed it (i.e. cheese + internal webcam) does work in my ubuntu 9.10 32 bit which is installed in a multiboot on the same computer.
I would like to get these problems resolved, ASAP, as I need to have my webcam (at least one of them, preferably both) working in ubuntu 8.10, for that's the OS I use the most often.I will note that my laptop is a Dell Studio 1535, and since I've installed Ubuntu 8.10 on it, I've had a number of other hardware issues with it on ubuntu, but I've been able to get most of them resolved a long time ago, but the webcam thing is one that I haven't got to work since I first installed ubuntu (which was God knows how long ago).
My usb webcam (SN9C103 chipset) seems to be "detected" properly in latest Ubuntu 10.10 but it doesn't actually work at all
For example I don't see it as an option in IM applications.

I suspect that it has to do with the fact that it's still not recognized properly in Ubuntu at first...
I need to load a driver for this webcam to work but which one? And how would I do that? modprobing?

I upgraded recently to Ubuntu 11.04 and have been trying unsuccessfully since to use an old webcam: Logitech Quickcam Messenger. The system doesn't recognize it at all as far as I can tell, which it did on 10.10 (I didn't really use it then, I just remember I could get a picture at some point.
