Ubuntu :: Weather Applet Does Not Show Australian Forecasts
Dec 3, 2010
There is a problem in the current version of the Gnome weather applet in that the web address it gets the details for a lot of Australian locations is no longer valid.
This is detailed in this bug report: [URL] and there is a patch for the source code for libgweather which now fixes it in the bug report.
Be warned that you have to currently compile your own fix and I found that the compilation process I used actually put the fixed library files in the wrong location - I had to manually move them to fix the issue (see the bug report for details).

I have found a post (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1331653) that tells me how to add a location to the Locations.xml file for the Gnome Weather Applet (NOT THE CLOCK/WEATHER APPLET). However when I try to open the file (the file is 916 kb) in bluefish it just hangs and never opens. I have tried doing something with both vim and nano but my expertise in using either of those is non-existent. If someone can help me understand how to open a file in vim or nano so I can edit this file (or ANY way to edit this file)

Starting yesterday the weather report applet 2.30.0 stopped updating at prescribed intervals. I have it set to check automatically for updated information every 5 minutes. It seems to be updating once an hour or more. The last two updates were at 53 minutes past the hour. In the past it has never went more than 10 minutes without an update. This is happening with two machines. I tried un-installing from the panel and reinstalling. I think I will try removing completely with synoptic package manager and reinstalling.

I'm wondering where the Gnome Weather Applet gets its weather data from.In particular I would like to add my location to the weather applet. I found a technical solution in this thread [URL], but I don't understand where the weather data comes from. In the file Locations.xml coordinates (e.g. 34.739188 -112.009879), codes (e.g. KSEZ) and zones (e.g. AZZ03 are specified. What do the codes and zones mean? How can I locate a weather station near me and find out it's codes? Where does the applet get its data from?For the weather report in the Clock Applet I just entered the coordinates of my location and now I'm getting some weather data. Does that mean that the program automatically takes data from the nearest location in its database?

I noticed that my clock panel applet recently stopped showing weather information. I tried adding a new location and I can see the weather for that location, just not my regular one (minneapolis). I think there is something wrong with whoever is supposed to be sending the weather info.

It simply doesn't work. No matter what city I put there (I even tried putting American cities) the applet just widens a bit to the left and shows nothing. Doing some searches, I learned the protocol it uses is called METAR, the data is provided by airports, and the list of locations is at:[URL]..
But this file doesn't exist! What exists is:[URL].. And that one only has American cities. But, as I said, not even American cities work. Where should I start looking?

I have been trying to get current weather using the GNOME weather applet. The ones which are installed by default and you do right-click > Add to Panel kinda thing. Now the problem is I'm getting stale or fixed current weathers as well as forecast. I have been trying for several weeks but with no success.

I had experienced a annoying feature relative to both the Gnome Weather-applet (the one linked to the clock) and the weather-desklet from Docky : With the same laptop (working under Lucid Lynx), they work perfectly fine when I am using them from work but never stop to update (in the case of the Docky desklet) or didn't show up (for the gnome weather-applet) when I am using them from home. In both case, I am using a WiFi connection and no proxy.
Has everyone else experimented such a problem ? If so, which parameters should I adjust to solve this trouble? PS : Wherever the place I am, I can access with a web-browser to the websites providing the weather forecast (iGoogle, weather.com and weather.underground).

I am using pogodynka.sh to try and get conky to show the temperature and incorporate and icon from weather.ttf to show a graphical depiction... i.e. a sun for sunny, a cloud with a lightening bolt for thunder...
I have managed to get it working in the past (about a year ago) Now I am unable to get the icon to show, the font is installed and being used by other parts of the same instance of conky. However the pogodynka DOES state the temperature. I just have no graphical representation of that, thus it creates a big blank spot in the middle of my conky....

I thought I was removing the chat status piece of the indicator applet (I know what it is now, didn't then), but I accidentally removed the whole thing. Now when I figured out how to put it back on the panel, I can't get it back to where it was (which was to the RIGHT of the system date/time applet). How can I do this as well as move the indicator applet that has the volume control in it?

I was using both the Indicator Applet and the Notification Area applets in my panel but realized that very often when I started the system, the icons of these applet appeared mixed. Some items were duplicated (for example the keyboard indicator) where others were missing (sometimes the battery indicator, sometimes the sound indicator, etc). When that happened I had to remove them and add them to panel again.
This seems to be a bug that makes one applet interfere with the other (maybe because there are some items that appear in both but when you add both initially nothing is duplicated but after a system restart the problem happens).After searching for some way to fix this apparent bug without success I decided to remove the Indicator applet and keep just the Notification Area.
It works but then I don't have the sound applet anymore, because it was part of the Indicator Applet.
I searched for a standalone sound applet but I couldn't find any. Do you know of any such applet that I could install in the system? If I can find any it would be fine to me and I would be satisfied using just the Notification Area.

I use network manager applet 0.7.1. I had set the automatic wireless connection to my my wireless network (WPA key secured). Recently, I get the following problem: At the automatic connection, I get the message: Network manager applet (/usr/bin/mn-applet) needs default keyering. As I don't know what it is to type it and then, deny or OK, it doesn't get connected to my wireless network.

I removed the "indicator applet" from the default gnome panel at the top of the default Lucid desktop. Doing so resulted in me losing the ability to control the sound from the panel, which I value so I put it back.Once I restored the indicator applet to the panel, the nm-applet went missing. I'm still connecting to my home network with no problem, so the function is there, but the little icon that updates when you're trying to connect, shows signal strength, and other available networks is now missing. This I've searched the problem and haven't found any solutions that work, I think because of the new applet integration, but I'm very surprised this hasn't been found by someone yet!

Lucid has this (opinion: stupid) notification applet in the top right that contains links and notifications for the default evolution etc setup. I do not want that applet and would prefer to run what I want via alltray. The problem is that removing the notification applet removes the sound applet! Firstly, how do I "unmarry" the two? secondly, who could have possibly thought that was a good idea? Ubuntu has been great, but c'mon! Why is a default email program married to the sound applet!

I'm trying to get weather installed/working for conky. In my .conkyrc file I have this code of line
Code:
${color white}${execi 1800 /home/rjr/weather/weather.sh 92392}
I have the 2 files weather.sh and weather.xslt in its own folder named weather and in weather.sh file I have this line of code..
Code:
# where this script and the XSLT lives
RUNDIR=/home/rjr/weather/
I gave permission to weather.sh file, on my desktop running conky in the weather section it says Invalid Partner Code. I tried even putting USCA1197 in the .conkyrc file instead of my zip code and still same problem. Do I have to give weather folder permission as well?
