Ubuntu :: Sound Applet Dependent On Unwanted "notify" Applet

Apr 27, 2010

Lucid has this (opinion: stupid) notification applet in the top right that contains links and notifications for the default evolution etc setup. I do not want that applet and would prefer to run what I want via alltray. The problem is that removing the notification applet removes the sound applet! Firstly, how do I "unmarry" the two? secondly, who could have possibly thought that was a good idea? Ubuntu has been great, but c'mon! Why is a default email program married to the sound applet!

Ubuntu :: 10.04 Lucid Unwanted Indicator Applet Shortcut In XRDP

May 3, 2010

I have just upgraded my old work horse from 9.10 to 10.04 and on the surface everything looks ok. However there are a few annoying issues that I have not been able to resolved. One of these is an annoying auto shortcut that links the 'm' key to the Indicator applet while running my desktop inside an XRDP session (Windows Vista client). Everytime the m key is pressed, the focus is autotragically hijacked by the Indicator applet. Attempting to type any text from any application such as the terminal or text editor is excruciating since everytime the m key is pressed the focus jumped to the Indicator applet, the only way to disable this 'feature' is by removing the Indicator applet.

This problem is not seen in the native console, only in XRDP sessions.

There is another thread that deals with similar issue [URL] but only for users with Apple keyboards and does not apply to my situation.

I use XRDP alot so this affects me severely. How do I go about diagnosing this problem, xev doesn't even see any event when the m key is pressed, the focus just jumped to the Indicator applet?

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Move Indicator Session Applet To The Right Of The System Date/clock Applet

May 6, 2010

I thought I was removing the chat status piece of the indicator applet (I know what it is now, didn't then), but I accidentally removed the whole thing. Now when I figured out how to put it back on the panel, I can't get it back to where it was (which was to the RIGHT of the system date/time applet). How can I do this as well as move the indicator applet that has the volume control in it?

Ubuntu :: Conflict Between Indicator Applet And Notification Area Applet?

May 15, 2011

I was using both the Indicator Applet and the Notification Area applets in my panel but realized that very often when I started the system, the icons of these applet appeared mixed. Some items were duplicated (for example the keyboard indicator) where others were missing (sometimes the battery indicator, sometimes the sound indicator, etc). When that happened I had to remove them and add them to panel again.

This seems to be a bug that makes one applet interfere with the other (maybe because there are some items that appear in both but when you add both initially nothing is duplicated but after a system restart the problem happens).After searching for some way to fix this apparent bug without success I decided to remove the Indicator applet and keep just the Notification Area.

It works but then I don't have the sound applet anymore, because it was part of the Indicator Applet.
I searched for a standalone sound applet but I couldn't find any. Do you know of any such applet that I could install in the system? If I can find any it would be fine to me and I would be satisfied using just the Notification Area.

Ubuntu :: Restoring Nm-applet To 10.04 Indicator Applet?

May 3, 2010

I removed the "indicator applet" from the default gnome panel at the top of the default Lucid desktop. Doing so resulted in me losing the ability to control the sound from the panel, which I value so I put it back.Once I restored the indicator applet to the panel, the nm-applet went missing. I'm still connecting to my home network with no problem, so the function is there, but the little icon that updates when you're trying to connect, shows signal strength, and other available networks is now missing. This I've searched the problem and haven't found any solutions that work, I think because of the new applet integration, but I'm very surprised this hasn't been found by someone yet!

After some searching on the net I understood that it was part of pulseaudio, but now I feel a bit lost. Alsa works like a charm instead, but since I also want to use ubuntu to record sound I'm not sure if it will work, and also I have a sound source for my HDMI interface and don't know how switch if I want to.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Java Applet No Sound In Maverick

May 14, 2011

I recently upgraded an ASUS netbook through a series of about 4 or so upgrades ending at Maverick (10.10). Sound in Java applets worked fine before that, but I've been trying for about a week now to get it working again.

Here is what I have tried so far:
Removed Sun Java and plugin, and installed Openjdk and icedtea
Removed Openjdk and icedtea, and installed Sun Java and plugin
Verified through aboutlugins that FireFox plugin matched installed Java plugin
Tried using padsp and aoss wrappers

Along the way I have also tried other suggestions I have found through Google for configuring sound and setting file permissions, but nothing works. No matter what I do, sound keeps working everywhere except in Java applets.

Here are some observations along the way.

Sound has worked everywhere I try except in Java applets. It works with Flash.

Java applets work fine except for sound. Java console indicates that sound files are being received and passed to applets.

My Java executable is located at /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun/jre/bin/java. I have tried renaming it "java.real" and creating a shell script that wraps it with padsp or aoss. When I do that Java works, but Java applets fail to start. The Java console does not start up, so the wrappers appear to prevent applets from starting.

I am trying to run applets at [url]. They work fine for me on a 64-bit 10.04 system and a 32-bit 10.04 system.

Ubuntu :: Sound Or Network Icon Missing From Indicator Applet?

Feb 10, 2011

I have an annoying problem. It started with the network icon in the indicator applet in gnome-panel. It just disappeared! Somehow I managed to get my network icon back (perhaps after a restart), but as soon as it showed up, my sound icon disappeared.

I followed some advice I saw somewhere that said to add another indicator applet. When I did I had my network icon on my pre-existing indicator applet and a sound indicator in the new one, but no network icon. Because I needed the sound icon, I closed the original. But, I'm still stuck with no network icon now. This is pretty frustrating.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: 2.6.31-18 Sound Control Applet No Longer Appears In Panel

Feb 2, 2010

Since I upgraded my kernel to 2.6.31-18 I have been experiencing problems with my sound. 2.6.31-18 sound problems with nvidia MCP72XE/MCP72P/MCP78U/MCP78SThe laptop speakers no longer shut off when plugging in headphones. My sound control applet no longer appears in the panel. When launching a sound application sound starts off real loud for a second and then changes to much quieter. I have had this laptop since Hardy with never any sound issues. I do not know if it is the kernel upgrade or the accompanying backports modules. Could be neither for all I know and it just started around that time and is a coincidence.

Here is what was installed:

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Sound Applet Disappeared And Cannot Change System Volume?

Feb 11, 2011

Recently I installed JACK and Ardour to try out. Later I decided against it and so I uninstalled them. After restarting my computer, I noticed that the sound applet has disappeared from the panel, although the battery and mail icons are still present. There is still sound coming out of my laptop speakers, but it is stuck at whatever volume I had it set on before the last time I shut down. Volume sliders inside Banshee and suchll function, but I cannot change the overall system volume, and my keyboard shortcuts for this have stopped working as well. When I go into System->Preferences->Sound, all I get is a message that says "Waiting for sound system to respond." and nothing happens. I've tried searching around for a solution, but nobody I could find seems to have had aimilar problem, and none of the various other solutions proposed have worked for me. I'm on Ubuntu 10.10 by the way.

Ubuntu :: No Nm-applet For Nonroot?

Oct 24, 2010

I have the following problem that network manager applet only shows up and I can connect to Internet, if run as root.How'd I get there:

- installed 10.04 LTS initially in server mode (no desktop environment) with wired ethernet attached, everything seemed to work fine as far as i remember;

- then added gnome desktop (actually by just apt-getting some gnome-requiring program) and everything seemed to work fine still;

- set up auto-login, too, still fine;

- then i moved the box to where it only had wireless ethernet.

Now what happens is, that network manager nm-applet does not show up in notification area at all, although it runs (and even briefly shows a sort of semi-transparent pop-up).When I kill it from console and run it via sudo, THEN it works But it always asks me for wireless password, doesn't allow to save it, and always drops the wifi and re-asks for wireless password after some period of inactvity

As I browsed the forums I understood that there might be some issues with Gnome keyring manager, but I have no where do I go from here to make it work, so that WiFi is connected automatically for nonroot, allows to save password and doesn't drop connection. As far as I understand, the Gnome keyring manager should've asked me for some default keyring or some such thing upon first run of nm-applet or upon entering passwords somewhere. I can't recall exactly, but I suspect that never happened. When I run "Passwords and encryption keys" I only have 1 key under "Passwords" tab -- "Passwords: login" and that's it.

Ubuntu :: Nm-applet Out Of Panel?

I have such an annoying problem that I really don't know how to fix! Basically for some reason the nm-applet icon just doesn't sit in the panel anymore, but it's floating on the desktop as a normal application. Restarting/reinstalling it doesn't solve the problem, it's still out of the panel. With any theme I use. It's a pretty fresh installation of Ubuntu 10.10 on a MacBook Pro, so there are no particular customizations. The only workaround I found is installing wicd, but I'm really not familiar with it and want to get rid of it.
