Ubuntu :: 9.10 Window List Applet Not Raising Window?
Feb 19, 2010Fresh install of 9.10 shows buggy behavior for the 'Window List Applet' in the gtk panel.
Usually, clicking on a button in the window list applet does nothing at all. It doesn't un-minimise it, set focus to the window, or bring it to the front.
In 8.10, the window was always raised immediately and given focus.
Sometimes it works, but I've not figured out the state in which it does. I currently have 10 windows open, clicking through them all in the window list raises most of them, but on some nothing happens.
Modifying the 'Window List Preferences' dialog does nothing to fix the problem.
I have checked System->Windows->Window Selection to 'Select windows when mouse moves over them'. 'Raise selected windows after an interval' is not selected.

Mar 29, 2011So the other day my window list applet was somehow connected with a crash, and ubuntu asked me if I wanted to remove it. I accidentally clicked yes not realizing what it was, and now ubuntu does not list the windows open on a workspace at the bottom of the screen - terribly annoying! how to get this back? Poking through the software manager and synaptic and googling aren't helping.

Feb 20, 2011I'm using the latest daily build of unity and the alpha of narty and the 3d version of Unity is dog slow on this computer. I installed the 2d version and it's much much better. The only problem is, I need to be able to see the battery manager applet, the clock, and the logout button, but none of them are visible. The only icon I have in the top right corner is the wifi manager.
I know everything is in alpha and unfinished, but is there a config file I need to modify or might I have done something wrong when adding and installing the 2d interface from the daily repo?

May 17, 2010I didn't know how else to word that. In 9.10, if you held the mouse over the volume indicator icon on the top menu bar, the current volume would pop up. Same went for the network indicator - hover over it and the current status popped up. Same with the battery indicator. Now with Karmic, I have to actually click on the icons to get any information.

Feb 8, 2011I am trying to use the indicator applet instead of the old notification area. I've noticed that just like the notification area, the indicator applet get its icons from the "status" folder of whatever icon theme you're using. However, I've tried changing various status icons for different programs and the changes are never reflected in the indicator applet. Updating the gnome icon cache, rebooting the pc, and removing/readding the indicator applet do nothing. Does the indicator applet have some other secret icon cache that needs to be cleared?

I did find where the icons are stored, but I was looking for a way to point to different icons instead of overwriting the originals. I have attached a screenshot of the applet and icons in question. By the way, I did try changing the overall icon theme of Cairo-Dock and that seems to have absolutely 0 effect on the applet icons.

Jul 4, 2011Is there a way I can refresh the list of available wireless networks in the network manager applet? It works correctly when I've just booted but doesn't after I resume after suspending. There's just a message like "wireless networks not available".
I can assure you that the wi-fi is not disabled using a button (my laptop doesn't have such a button), "Fn" key combination or in any other way and the network doesn't go down when I need it.

But for some reason there is no obvious way to change the transparency of applets. Their transparency depends on the current theme. For example with the theme "radiance" window-switcher and date are opaque. With "human-clearlooks" both are transparent.
Is there a way change the transparency without changing the theme?

Mar 30, 2011I am using Faenza Icons, which is reflected in the icons on the throughout the system except in the windows list applet for certain applications like Firefox and Chrome in the gnome panel. The indicator applet and the menu do show Faenza icons for all the items (including firefox and chrome). I am yet to check for other applications which do not follow the icon theme. I want the windows list to be consistent with the menu and it feels strange that certain applications follow their own icons disregarding the theme I have selected.

Ubuntu :: Hide List View Expand/contract Icons?
Feb 7, 2011in my quest to reduce chrome and padding in Nautilus, I've come across something I can't seem to find on my own. I know there are 3 basic views - icons, list, and compact - and I prefer list; however, on the left of the list view, there is a 20-25px or so (depending on theme of course) of margin/padding/space on the left - reserved for the + or - or arrows indicating a folder can be expanded inline.
I would simply like to remove this space (and the cooresponding +/- icons). I realize this will relinquish my ability to expand folders inline - which is fine with me, I don't use the feature much anyway.I can probably surmise where the actual icons live, reverse engineering a theme or what have you... but I'm guessing that still won't change that space.
is there any way to get a more "vanilla" list view?UPDATE: while I don't think specs really matter to this question, here's what I'm running anyway:Ubuntu 10.10, 32bit in Gnome (default for that Ubu version) using mostly stock Nautilus besides it being the Elementary build (hidden menubar and such).

Jul 3, 2011I was testing with "Compiz rotate cube" in my Ubuntu machine. Changed some settings by disabling "desktop cube". Something had changed in the mean time.
Now i could able to login. Only blank desktop wall paper i could able to see. No applications list, startup icons displaying.
If i press Ctrl + Alt + F = Folder view is displaying, i could able to view my files.
If i press Ctrl + Alt + F1 = Could able to go to Terminal window and able to do all sort of commands.
revert to my original settings so that i will getback my icons / applications list in my desktop.

For example, in the above image, the bottom-right file contains: "hello ubuntu forums / this is my problem / how can we fix it? / thank you" and it's icon displays some of this message so that it may be read without opening the file As you can see, the problem occurs with some filetypes, like .txt and .html, but not with others, like .doc or .rtf. I can't find any information about making the text appear on the same colour as the background -- eg. if the text is a menu on the window, it should be on a grey background. If on a white screen then white. It is turquoise everywhere!
