Ubuntu :: WINE's Audio Stopped Working
May 14, 2010
I've tried it before, but not in depth. Anyway, just today, out of nowhere, WINE's audio stopped working. It was working fine before... I'm not sure what happened. I went to the sound, tried a BUNCH of driver combinations, but zip, nada. Whenever I click "Test Sound", all it says it "Audio test failed!", no details or anything.

I ended up upgrading my wine version to 1.3.20 before it was released to the PPA repos. I downloaded it via git, compiled & installed, but now it did not detect my drivers anymore. It even warned me when i ./configure'd it, but I didn't listen. I tried, also, remove purge all wine packages I own and reinstall them from Ubuntu, but the dud 1.3.20 version is still installed. Is there a way to bring the sound back? Or, is there a way to revert this installation and make me able to install 1.3.19 back?
The following message appears when I access the "Audio" tab @ winecfg:
Code:
Found driver in registry that is not available ! Remove 'alsa' from registry?

I have a media center box running Ubuntu 9.10 x64 and XBMC. One day sound just stopped working on it. I did not install any updates around the time this happened. I have tried using a known working sound card. I verified the main volume is up and everything else in alsamixer looks OK. I have tried connecting known working headphones. Confirmed the kernel sees the hardware and loads to module for it. Confirmed several audio applications have no sound. I've confirmed it is set to use the correct sound card. I even booted into a live disk of the same version if Ubuntu and audio works fine there.
No errors are produced by any application, they act like they are playing audio just fine. The only entries in the logs about this I can find is below.

I tried upgrading from Jaunty to Karmic, which borked booting on that partition. I made a fresh install of Karmic on another partition which is booting fine, but I can't get Audio CDs to work, period. They worked in Jaunty and every release before that I had installed. Data CDs work fine in Karmic. I'm using plain ol' Ubuntu 32bit. I'm not sure where to start. There have been other threads where other people had identical symptoms. Either the problem went away mysteriously on its own, or they gave up because nobody believed them. In any case, I'm beginning to wish I had stuck with Jaunty.

I can't get any sound from either online audio or from a CD in drive. I've watched videos with sound with only occasional problems until today. I have been using MPlayer with internal audio 1 output - analog stereo output. When I start a vid, it will begin to D/L and play, but without sound. When I try to check the volume level everything pauses and then my system freezes. Sometimes it will release in a few seconds, but mostly it won't allow me to close Firefox and if I try to close the tab or window or Firefox, I have to reboot. Sometimes the vid will D/L without a problem, but no audio on playback. Oddly, when I bring up the system monitor, processors will show 1 or 2 cores stuck at 100% while the others fluctuate wildly. Download speed falls to almost nothing with occasional blips or nothing. I checked several sites and they all have the same problem. I have checked my physical connections, and bios settings.
There is an option for a RS780 Azalia controller 1 output Digital Stereo (HDMI) output, but I have not been able to make it work since the system was new. I don't know why.
This is the most recent SYSLOG file. The pulse audio errors have always been there, but since it didn't seem to affect playback, I didn't run it down.

So everything was working perfectly on my system. I have Debian SID, with the debian-multimedia repos and liquorix repos for kernels. Flash worked perfectly one boot, then the next boot the video still works perfectly but no audio. I found several "fixes" on the web, including creating .asoundrc in your home directory and another that said to
Quote:edit /etc/firefox/firefoxrc -- change the line FIREFOX_DSP="none" to FIREFOX_DSP="aoss"neither of those have done anything. Have tried using both the flashplugin-nonfree and flashplayer-mozilla, same thing on either. ALL other sound works, smplayer, amarok, system sounds, etc.

My Compaq Presario F739WM laptop has a Connexant HD Audio/NVidia MCP51 (reported by lspci) sound card.Ubuntu has always supported the card with no problem except the random popping noise but then I found a work around for that. Now for some reason, when I first turn on my computer and at login screen I can hear Ubuntu noises, yet seems once I login, no more sound or sometimes the successfully logged in sound.
The only changes that I have since the sound worked, was I installed pulseaudio but that caused no problems with that. The other change was a few kernel upgrades and other packages through normal update manager.I have checked that snd_hda_intel driver was loaded in the kernel and in alsa, all seems well.Pulse detects audio output in it's meter.I also tested the sound card to make sure it wasn't bad, in Windows 7 (dual boot) and it wokrs perfectly.

When I opened Quicken this morning I saw that WINE did some kind of update; now Quicken cannot open files. The program seems to start normally but when I try to open a file it locks up. I see that Freecell runs normally but of course it doesn't access any data files.

When originally installing 11.04 I had problems getting my Ralink 5390 wireless card to work.
Today my computer froze completely and I had to turn it off via the power switch. When I turned it back on, wireless was no longer recognized! My iPod can connect to the network just fine, so it must be an Ubuntu problem. There are no problems with my ethernet connection either.
I researched this and found several threads about blocking and unblocking wireless devices using the rfkill command. Well, unfortunately for me the rfkill command doesn't work. When I type sudo rfkill list or sudo rfkill unblock all, nothing happens; it just returns me to my bash prompt. I even tried uninstalling and reinstalling rfkill...nothing.

Wine in F12 (we no longer have the i386 build, only the x86_64 build available in x86_64 systems as in F11) winecfg crashes when trying to configure any audio controller and one is installed? I remember seeing this very same behaviour happen in Fedora 11 when using the x86_64 build, but the i386 did not have this problem. As soon as you click the Audio tab and click OK to the dialog warning that there is no "Audio driver slected", Wine enters into an infinte loop trying to start the debugger.
When I have time, I'll report this to the Bugzilla, as I do not believe the x86_64 package of Wine to be a true x86_64 binary (as older releases), but the 32-bit Wine only wrapped in a Fedora x86_64 package (then again, I maight be wrong, and indeed this package is 64-bit capable, which would mean it could run 64-bit native Windows executables), at any rate, in its current state, not only does winecfg crashes when trying to poll (I think) the sound devices, but if one of the controllers is installed, also trying to run an application that has sound (a game or multimedia program) it will cause the same effect (or simply not have sound at all).

Been using openSUSE 11.4 64-bit for a couple of months now, things seem to run very smoothly, and I'm very pleased with it. But sometimes things just seem to stop working as intended although this probably have nothing to do with openSUSE and is most likely a bug in Banshee.Well, the title says all about the problem really, and it's not a big issue since I most certainly can use another program to rip my cds.

Right so I managed to fix this once, by installing the wine.i686 instead of the x86_64, but now it's back. So I removed the 686 package and installed the x86_64 package again, no go. I get a fairly sizey list of memory dumps. The audio is working on everything else. But winecfg keeps crashing when I click the audio tab. This is on a Packard bell with ATI chipset, an ATI tech Azalia (Intel HDA) soundcard, an AMD Turion 64x2.I'm running FC12 on the 2.6.32.11-99.fc12.x86_64 kernel, the version of wine is 1.1.38.x86_64 (right now) on kde 4.4.2

Well, I've been trying to get a program called SRS Audio Sandbox to work under Wine, but since it works with the audio output, it requires an audio driver and looks for the Windows one instead of the Linux one. Any way to emulateimitate that driver so it'll work?

I'm looking for great audio player that has it all - sound quality, easy to use, functionality and eye-candy if possible. For Windows there is plenty great players - Foobar2000, Winamp, Apollo(sound quality isn't skinnable), The KMPlayer etc... but my favourite is AIMP2 - it's awesome for people who have lot of music files and want everything from other players.. I tried QMMP and Audacious(remade XMMS) and Amarok but they doesn't offer much.. Also i tried run AIMP2 with wine but it doesn't work in Mint 9(it did on Ubuntu Ultimate 2.8 though for some reason) and foobar2000 but some features of this program are blocked in wine like equalizer preset load + firefox addon to control foobar while browsing web can't be used aswell..i also went through alternative list(P.S.) but i don't see anything close..
how to get AIMP2 work in wine on Linux Mint 9 (im using this distro atm but im looking for universal solution since i might move later to other Linux or BSD). [URL]

resubscribed to Rapidshare and in the past could easily download my friend's discussion papers using the file manager called DTA that integrates into Firefox. I have taken out a new subscription to RS and instead of getting the files I am receiving small html referer files. In theory this should be corrected by ticking a direct download setting on RS, but it is making no difference. I can manually download the files so I am certain the files are on RS in full form. I am also successfully auto logging into RS and this means the name and password are being handed over correctly

Now when I reboot grub throws me in the grub shell, if I then type configfile /grub/grub.cfg it starts grub like its supposed to. Tho I cant seem to be able to go straight to the grub menu and no to the shell.

I got a call from a friend who did the distrubution upgrade from 9.04 to 9.10 and all was well for about 2 weeks and then his desktop icons disappeared. He kept running it that way and never looked for help until a couple of days ago he tried to plug in a card reader to get some pictures from his camera and nothing happened. that was when he discovered that he couldn't run Nautilus at all. I had him purge nautilus and reinstall it but then he couldn't even log in to Ubuntu. Very strange indeed. Anyone else experience this? After going over all the settings and finding them what they should be, I just installed 10.04 and all is well except that he lost a few photos.
