Ubuntu :: VLC Setup To Play Info Movie On Monitor Repeatedly?
Jul 20, 2010
I need to play a info movie on a monitor through VGA. When done, then re-start the movie and continue to run it, forever. How do i do this? If I install a ubuntu 10.04 server, or a very stripped down ubuntu version (i dont know one) then how do I setup VLC to do what I want it to? All I can find is stuff about streaming over a network, and nothing on how to stream (local) over vga.

I recently got a signal conversion box so I could route my netbooks monitor-out port to my TV. The idea being that I could effectively set the TV up as a separate monitor for watching movies on whilst I worked using the netbooks own monitor. It seemed to work initially, the Monitors dialog box could easily detect and setup the TV as if it were just an external monitor however I can't seem to play any kind of video on either screen when this is set up. All I get in Totem, Mplayer, VLC and skype is just a black area within the applications window. The sound works fine so this is clearly just a video problem.
It only seems to occur when I configure the system to use the TV as a separate monitor. If I tell it to display the same thing on both monitors all video output works fine.

Recent FC10 totally clean install. Fully updated using yum.
Using gui /system/administration/network I set up my DNS to the two IP addresses I've been given.
$service network restart
cat /etc/resolv.conf and the secondary DNS has changed to the IP address of my
gateway (router, at 192.168.2.x)
I.e. something is overwriting resolv.conf
Prior to this install, I'd been successfully using fixed IP on the 192.168.2.x range quite happily. Now it only works on DHCP and DNS seems to take an age.

I am currently trying to play a VC-1 encoded MKV-file under Linux (Ubuntu 10 / latest Mint, both are affected), but VLC reports that it isn't able to decode WVC-1. VLC is able to play this file under Fedora 13, OS X and Windows, while both mplayer and ffplay are able to play this movie under Ubuntu 10 and Linux Mint.
I made two log files that where previously posted on the VLC forum, where I was told that it looks like there is a problem with the avcodec. I have basic experience with compiling stuff, but my knowledge of C++ and the linux internals is close to null. Which packages do I need to build from source in order recreate avcodec and its dpendendcies?
Link to error log running Ubuntu 10 and latest "Linux Mint" (reinstalled multiple times):[url]
Link to log running Fedora13 (works, but I prefer debian based linux):[url]
And last but not least a link to my thread on the VLC board:[url]

When I put a DVD in my PC (any DVD), it recognizes the DVD and even tells me the title of the movie (for example, it knows that I put Cat People in the DVD drive). But then it gives an error message, "An error occurred. Could not read from resource." I have Ubuntu 9.10 on a HP Pavilion ZE4900 laptop.

When I insert a movie DVD into the drive, the disk is read, a window pops up asking what software do I want to use (Open Movie Player is the default). I click use Open Movie Player and get "An error occurred could not read from resource" dialog - and the movie does not play. The file manager reads the disk without any problem, so don't think it's a bad disk (and it plays in my WinXP machine). I checked in Synaptic and it appears that Totem and all the stuff that needs to be installed with Totem is there. Is there another player or some front end for totem that I don't have? In that initial screen asking for software choice, totem is not an optio n.I've looked around in Medibuntu and it looks like all the needed files are already installed. Is there a different DVD player that needs to be installed?

This may be a stupid question, but with Movie Player, how do I play a video_ts video? In VLC under media it has the option to open a directory, which is self explanatory that the video_ts option falls under. What about Movie Player?

I'm hoping someone may be able to help me; I have done a complete new install of Mythbuntu 11.04 on an IBM T400, only OS on a formatted drive.
I have not changed any settings on the Backend, only loaded a few Music, Photos & Videos to the /var/lib/mythtv/music & pictures & video directories.
Photos & music functionality is 100%
The problem I'm having is with the "Watch Video" option; the test videos I have loaded to /var/lib/mythtv/videos directory, show up in the Watch Video section, all the information on each movie is displayed (looks great), it gives me the option to "Play" the video, but when I select play, nothing happens.
If I close the "Frontend" and open the same movies with VLC the work perfectly

I'm using Ubuntu 11.04 64bit. I just bought the Zotac Geforce GT 430. I downloaded and installed the driver NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-275.21.run. (from nvidia.com)
Everything seems alright except that I can only see black video when I play any kind of movie (avi, mkv, mov, ..) while the sound is still playing.
Previously, I could watch any movie well with the onboard graphic card. My mainboard is Gigabyte GA-H55M-S2V.

This is my second day of using Linux Mint and I have bunch of questions. Let's start with this one. I tried to play dvd movie yesterday night. I put disc in drive. And nothing happened. Like it's not in there. So I tried to double click (I'm old Windows user trying to learn new stuff) on cd/dvd disc in computer. It's unresponsive. I try right click run with application some kind of movie player. It says 'Could not open location. You might not have permission to open the file'.So I installed VLC and did the same thing but same message appears. So I look at google for the answer and didn't find much. And I was tired and went to sleep.
Today I wake up, turn on my laptop and surprise, surprise! There is some icon on my desktop saying 'Name of the show' (that was the dvd I was trying to open). So I double click it and there are all episodes. And I can now browse it and play any episode I want. So I say, 'hey, there must be something if I eject this dvd, and put it in again, I would have same problem as last night'. And I have. And problem is back. Now I cant play anything again.

I also took a snapshot of my system monitor. I am not sure what resources it is talking about?

I have a lot of .ogv and .mpg files. Most of the .ogv files won't play, and none of the .mpg files will play, in Totem. I installed VLC media player and all the files will play in it. If I click on file properties in Nautilus for the files that won't play, it says "Creating Properties window. You can stop this operating by clicking cancel." But it never actually shows me the file properties.

This is a triple-monitor setup with two video cards, where the mouse pointer gets "stuck" if it tries to cross from one video card to the next one. It worked correctly in openSUSE 11.2 and doesn't work in openSUSE 11.3 with the same xorg.conf. This is a 64-bit openSUSE 11.3 with xorg 7.5-11.3 (the openSUSE prepackaged version). I've already tried NVidia drivers 256.53-16.1 (the openSUSE NVidia repository version) and 260.19.12 (the latest off of the NVidia website).
This is the same xorg.conf that I used successfully in openSUSE 11.2. I tried a new automatically generated xorg.conf using nvidia-settings and it had the same problem. This forum won't let me upload the relevant files, but here: [URL] is a tar-ball with my xorg.conf, Xorg.*.log, /var/log/messages, and the NVidia debugging output.

I am running Wheezy 7.9 and recently created a file, in xorg.conf.d, to set the monitor configuration because the EDID is not always read from the monitor. Everything works great but when the EDID is not read the monitor name, as shown in System Settings>Displays, shows as Unknown. I have the vendor info and modelname in the config file but they do not show in the Display GUI. Is there some variable that I can set in order to get a good monitor name displayed?
Probably should include some more information. I am using the Gnome Classic desktop and gdm manager. Here is the monitor conf file that I put in /etc/X11/xorg,conf.d
Code: Select allSection "Monitor"
Identifier "Monitor0"
VendorName "VSC"
ModelName "VA912b"
DisplaySize 376 301
HorizSync 30.0 - 82.0
VertRefresh 50.0 - 85.0
[Code] ....
