I want to install grub on the ubuntu root partition because I have another boot loader (boot-us). But when I reach : device for boot loader installation and set the device to the root partition (/dev/sda3) the OK button is not highlighted, I can use the windows partitions but not ubuntu root partition, what goes wrong?
View 3 RepliesI have installed unbuntu 10.04.. since i dont want grub to boot my linux distros , i have installed the bootloader in the root partition (sda9 in my case with no separate partition for boot). Subsequent to successful ubuntu installation i booted using the live cd and extracted the boot loader using the following.
dd if=/dev/sda9 of=/ub.bin bs=512 count=1
Finally i edited the boot.ini (win xp) to show ubuntu in the menu which points to ub.bin.
But this doesnt seem to work... the same had worked with Mandriva 2010
Where did i go wrong ?
i use a 3rd party boot mgr.i installed jessie over etch on my old computer & only choice i saw for grub was sda & sdb where i wanted to install on sdb9.i tried installing it from my wheezy partition & it did but i ended up with 2 boots to wheezy.so i went back to etch.
my question is how to get grub on sdb9 like it was on etch.is there a trick or did i miss a prompt? on another note, that bug where the format hangs if you try & install over an old system is a little irritating. can't believe it hasn't been fixed.
Because I am using one of the new WD disks I am trying to aling my root partition with the real sectors, as described here:[URL]31So I copied all files to a temp location, deleted my partition (/dev/sda3), recreated it a few cylinders later (same name) and copied the files to the newly created partition. But now when I try to boot, I get my old grub menu but after selecting my kernel version it hangs

View 1 Replies View RelatedFirst upgrade to 11.3 no problem. Then I got a disk issue. so got an old 80 gig sata drive, config new partition table, format etc. Install perfect as ever.
Then grub failed ....no grub menue.
I changed to MRB boot. this worked but initrd takes a long time and sometime hangs ?!? What could be the issue ? Harddrive?!

Besides small differences between these systems (most of them from the most recent versions of software used by the latest Ubuntu, such as GRUB 2), it has been decided that the new system will run an union root partition using aufs and tempfs, basically, we are following the steps provided heree install the system to a new hard drive from an already running Ubuntu Karmic system, usingdebootstrap/chroot, we move the disk to another sytem, so we have to correct disk references, we are able to run this system and it behaves correctly the first time it boots, it bypasses the GRUB menu since there are no other systems detected. However, after halting the system and booting it, the GRUB menu appears with a new "recovery" option, we've managed to remove this recovery option usingGRUB_DISABLE_LINUX_RECOVERY=trueBut then, the GRUB menu appears again, this time with only one option to boot: our system installation. But when this GRUB menu appears, it has no default timeout and so it stays forever unless ENTER is pressed to boot into the selected entry.
The main problem is that we are unable to configure GRUB inside the new installation because it always returns this message:grub-probe error cannot find a device for /If we boot the system "normally" (mounting root to a normal partition), we are able to configure GRUB properly, but it does not behave the same when using the union file system as /We are only looking for a way to bypass the GRUB menu and boot our system, do you have any advice on how to properly configure the GRUB menu for our system

As you can see, the installation goes well, but, why installing grub into a partition instead of MBR is a bad idea? I like to have many distros on my computer, and each one comes with their own menu.lst parameters, which also can change during updates. So it's much more pratical to create an empty partition of 64MB or less, create a /boot/grub there, install into MBR and then chainload into the other partitions.
So if I mess up with any distro, my mbr is still intact. And also if the parameters of grub setup required for a distro changes with any updates on the distro, they keep updated. So for me it is not pratical to have one distro installed on MBR controlling the other ones, having to constantly change my menu.lst. What are the risks of installing GRUB into a partition instead of MBR? Why is this message displayed? Maybe the question goes for why blocklists are unreliable or something like that?
So I need to become the root user in order to edit a grub file in a seperate partition, so I can get back into this partition. How can I become and stay as root user in the desktop environment? (I know you shouldn't do this, but I need it.)

If I boot with the WXP CD and reinstall it in the original NTFS partition, will it wipe the boot menu out, loosing any chance to boot in Linux?
I'm just slightly confused here, but... what the? Why does installing grub-doc remove BOTH grub-pc, and grub-common? So basically it seems like by installing grub-doc, I have uninstalled grub totally (yes, it is still there as the bootloader, but i have no way of updating it now!) from my system. What's the conflict between grub-doc and grub-pc, such that grub-pc has to be removed?

I have finally been convinced to partition my 500GB hard drive from a two partition setup with root and swap to a three partition setup with root, swap, and home. I found a nice tutorial about how to do this, but here is my question:
A) How much space do I leave for the root partition and the home partition?
I am trying to install google chrome on my computer, it is in a .deb package and I am using dreamlinux. Earlier today I installed a .cbr/.cbz file reader from root, that was also a .deb and it worked just fine. now I go to install google chrome and it says (Blue is my command, and red is the system response):
I checked under my USER GROUPS and Root is still set as root, and I haven't been using it unless I need to install with it to other directories, Should I be using another command to install? or is it a problem that may affect other aspects of my system? ... My biggest concern is not getting google in, I can wait for that ... I just wanna know why ROOT is under the impression it's not a superuser.
I'm currently setting up a dell server with hardware raid 1 on sas 6r. i got 4 sas installed on the server and configured to raid 1 as stated below,
array 1:
slot 0 & 1
array 2:
slot 2 & 3
during the installation, the installer detect the array 2 as sda and array 1 as sdb.. so i proceed with installation on array 2. after completed the installation, the first reboot lead me to a 'grub-rescue" prompt. by following the guide at url Mode, i've noticed that the boot folder has changed to (hd1,1), which i believe it has changed to sdb1. default root device shows that prefix=(hd0,1)/grub.
I have a machine which has only /opt with some decent amount of space where I can install a software. /opt belongs to root:root. The software I want to install cannot be installed as root user.
So lets say I create a directory called /opt/install1 and then chown -R install1 to belong to user1. And now I install the software under /opt/install1 with user as user1.
Is this a best practice violation? There could potentially be just /opt/install1 belong to user1 and in future everything else created under /opt belonging to root..
when I tried to install Fedora on my pc, I got this error message " Defined Root partition not created a / boot/efi partition. I am trying to install it on a seperate hd. My main one has windows xp pro, but I do not want to interfer with that at all?.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI initially installed SuSe11.2 with /tmp mounted on separate partition on another physical disk( there are two physical disks). Now I want to attach disk with existing SuSe11.2 to another motherboard so I would like that /tmp becomes part of the root partition. Will deleting /tmp mount point in /etc/fstab create automatically new /tmp from root at next startup, or something else has to be done to achieve, that in future, /tmp resides on root partition instead? In this way it would be much easier to move the disk with SuSe11.2 to another motherboard.

I have partitioner available to me but how do I change the partition size when the root partition is mounted. Do I login as root and then umount or modify fstab and restart and change from command line or do I format and reinstall everything? I have room to expand but not sure how to manage this?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI got ubuntu 10.04 lucid lynx along with windows (dual boot) and using Grub. On my computer, I have my C:/ (programs) and D:/ (data). I've never used my D:/ before that day that I've lost my windows partition on my grub menu. I usually use my D:/ with windows. The first time I used my D:/ to store data with linux, I lost my windows option in my grub menu. I'm not sure what I did wrong but I do want to restore my windows option in my grub menu.
After "fdisk -l",
I checked in /boot/grub and there is no menu.lst to modify. how I can get back my windows option in my grub menu ?
is it possible to use a Windows-based recovery partition on a dual-boot computer to overwrite the Ubuntu partition and remove the GRUB loader? For instance, if you booted up your computer, accessed the hidden recovery partition and used it to reset the computer to it's factory default settings, would that effectively remove the Ubuntu partition and the GRUB loader? Would a completely new installation of Windows overwrite/uninstall Ubuntu and GRUB automatically?

I couldn't get my old linux (Red Hat 9) so I installed SuSe on my new hard drive. But I need my be able to boot from my old hard drive because it has apps that only run on the earlier version. I don't know if this is possible however would like to know how to move grub from one partition to another.I may not have explainded that very well. I have a computer that i use to checkout different linux distros, however since the introduction of grub2 things have become difficult. I have a number of primary partitions on the one hdd If I install a o/s that uses grub on a partition and another partition has a o/s that uses grub2 then on startup the o/s with grub2 no longer appears on the grub start up screen so I cannot boot into the grub2 o/s. The reverse is ok i.e. if I install a grub2 o/s after a grub o/s all appear on the grub start up screen.
This leaves me in the situation where I have to always reinstall a grub2 o/s after i install a grub o/s. Hope that makes sense! This is why it would be easier (I hope) to be able to move grub from one o/s to another. I must admit I don't really understand it all that well and I know that mbr plays a role in it, however I think it's correct that the mbr can remain on an o/s yet grub is on another?
I just did a fresh install of 11.4 and I LOVE IT!!! One of the little issues I am having though, is that there is no login screen. No matter what settings I change it still auto-logs me in.
I am using GRUB and the Boot Loader Location has both "Boot from MBR" and "Boot from Root Partition". Is this right? I would think that I should just boot from the MBR.
I'm running Karmic Server with GRUB2 on a Dell XPS 420. Everything was running fine until I changed 2 BIOS settings in an attempt to make my Virtual Box guests run faster. I turned on SpeedStep and Virtualization, rebooted, and I was slapped in the face with a grub error 15. I can't, in my wildest dreams, imagine how these two settings could cause a problem for GRUB, but they have. To make matters worse, I've set my server up to use Luks encrypted LVMs on soft-RAID. From what I can gather, it seems my only hope is to reinstall GRUB. So, I've tried to follow the Live CD instructions outlined in the following article (adding the necessary steps to mount my RAID volumes and LVMs). [URL]
If I try mounting the root lvm as 'dev/vg-root' on /mnt and the boot partition as 'dev/md0' on /mnt/boot, when I try to run the command $sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/ /dev/md0, I get an errors: grub-setup: warn: Attempting to install GRUB to a partition instead of the MBR. This is a BAD idea. grub-setup: error: Embedding is not possible, but this is required when the root device is on a RAID array or LVM volume.

I am still using Lucid with a Luks/dm-crypt setup. I picked up an upgrade today that included grub. It gave me a box that had me choose my location to install the upgrade. I chose /boot. ALERT! /dev/disk/by-uuid/c946b41f-2f8f-4a28-8478-11a50d6fc0e8 does not exist. Dropping to a shell!
Booting from my 9.10beta livecd sudo fdisk -lu shows my root partition (sda5) but blkid doesn't, and there's no way to mount it.
I know similar questions have been posted before but they all involve using fsck or e2fsck, which don't work with my ext4 filesystem.

I few months ago I was forced to do a fresh clean install of Karmic becasue my root partition (then 80 GB) was full. I shooulkd have used a LiveCD to resize partitions then but I didn't so when I installed Karmic this time I ended up with a 160GB partition for /.Color me surprised when last night I got a message that / was at less than 5% free space.
1. I routinely do a apt clean so the cache is not an issue.
2. I do not store backups on /. I use rsnapshot to same backup on an external hard drive.
3. I use Virtualbox but all my hard drives (VDI) are on /home.
how can I run it as root if root has been disabled in Ubuntu?
