Ubuntu :: Unable To Update Drivers In Natty / Enable This?
May 7, 2011Currently I am trying to update my drivers in 11.04 on a dell inspiron mini.
I do not believe it is a pure dell problem, as my regular dell xps running 10.10 has been having to problems updating.
I go into additional drivers and start having it search but it gets stuck and states:
Downloading package indexes failed, please check your network status. Most drivers will not be available.
Does this mean the servers are just really busy? Or do I have a problem somewhere on my end?

Jun 23, 2011I've run in to a weird problem where i cant uncheck the "pre-released updates" box...I had recently checked it to get a glimpse at what kinds of updates would be available with the option checked so i tried it and updated my repository. The problem is now i cant uncheck it again or any of the options for that matter. Is there a way to reset the repository settings to default?
I also would like to know if kde keeps a history of installed packages..since i couldnt uncheck the box i went ahead and installed everything thinking it might let me uncheck it afterwards (stupid i know), but seeing as how im pretty newbie, i dont want to take the chances of some package breaking

Feb 10, 2010I recently installed Deluge 1.2.0 from the following PPA:[URL]I using this on two different Linux computers. One is running Linux Mint 8 and the other is running Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.10. The first time on either computer when I enable WebUI in the Deluge GUI it works fine. However if I ever disable it in plugins section I am subsequently unable to re-enable it (doesn't appear in the side panel again). Rebooting or reinstalling Deluge seems to have no effect.Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong?

Jan 24, 2010I'm running Karmic on an Acer Aspire AO751h and very aware of the issues regarding the GMA500 ans psb drivers, and after reading all the forums I've finally accomplished to make it work just fine. Last week it performed an update via the update manager and since then I haven't been able to restore/run any of the compiz settings and found out that the problem is that it doesn't let me turn on my visual effects under the appearance settings. When I attempt to set them as normal or extra, it starts "searching for available drivers" then the screen blinks several times, goes black, hides every window and just shows me my desktop background and then come back again and displays "Desktop effects could not be enabled". As I mentioned before, Compiz was running fine and I had no issues with the visual effects prior to the last update perfomed a week ago. Can you help me please?? If you need further information I'll be more than glad to provide them tou you, this is driving me nuts!

Apr 30, 2010I just finished the update. Though everything seems to work just fine hardware wise... somehow it was decided that I'd prefer netbook remix over the standard install. I hate it! I can't seem to find any way to get the standard desktop mode back, and I feel like after the upgrade, my fan has been working overtime for some reason.
Can someone point me in the right direction to disable netbook remix? I really cant stand it.

Ubuntu :: No Longer Able To Enable Desktop Effects After Update?
Dec 19, 2010So I recently fresh installed Ubuntu 10.10, and after a few hiccups I got everything running fine, including the desktop effects with Compiz. So anyways, after a couple days of everything working fine, I ran an update, and rebooted. When Ubuntu booted back up and I logged in, all the effects were off. I opened up Compiz and all the boxes were unchecked.So I went to the appearance settings, tried to enable the "Extra" visual effects, and then the "Searching for drivers" box popped up. It ran for a little bit and then closed and said "desktop effects could not be enabled". So I checked the restricted drivers thing and the ATI proprietary driver is enabled and in use.
But whenever I try to enable the effects the screen just flickers, the window borders flicker for a second, and then the window pops up saying the desktop effects couldn't be enabled. The searching for drivers window only pops up like half the time.My video card is an ATI Radeon HD 3870, and I've tried reinstalling the drivers for it.Also, whenever I run compiz my window borders disappear entirely and don't pop up again until I try to enable desktop effects in the appearance settings. I've lurked the forums a bit, and I haven't been able to find anything that has fixed my problem.

Jun 29, 2010When I put a DVD in my DVD drive I cannot get Ubuntu to play it, not with VLC, Enna, Boxee or Movie Player, with movie player I get "An Error Occurred Could not open location; you might not have permission to open the file."
With VLC I get some very slow jerky playback that crashes when I go full screen.

I know it is saying that the harddrive that I installed ubuntu is missing.
Heres the story:
My friend's computer wouldnt let him boot to the CD to install Ubuntu on his computer.
So I put his harddrive into my computer as my 3'rd Harddrive and booted the CD on my Machiene and installed Ubuntu to his harddrive.
We got ubuntu to work just fine, and then I removed his harddrive from my computer... big mistake. I no longer have the harddrive that we installed ubuntu to so I cannot use any programs or anything.
What I want to do is get my Windows 7 working again. Right now I cannot do ANYTHING.

Jul 5, 2011So, I've been using Ubuntu (currently 10.04 lucid) for a while now and have added several repositories to my software sources before with never a problem, but now when I try to add a new repository the 'add source' button won't highlight and I am unable to add the repository. Does anyone have any idea why this might be because it is severely irritating me right now and I really don't want to have to completely reinstall Ubuntu to fix this.

Jul 8, 2011I ran Windows on this computer but it decided it wanted to die on me yesterday, so right now I'm using a Ubuntu Live CD. I wanted to save my files before I install Ubuntu on this harddrive, but when I click on 'Computer', I can't see my harddrive. However, if I go to Disk Utility I am able to see the drive: Unknown (500GB) and Unknown (490GB). I cannot access any of the partitions, so I tried to mount them. When I do that, I get the message code...
The same goes with /sda1/ which kind of sucks. I also tried with /sda/ but it didn't work either. I should probably also mention that when I try to run the Ubuntu installer it shows my harddrive, but no partitions.

Aug 17, 2011i'm currently running Ubuntu 11.04.Heres my problem. Everytime i try to run Compiz and apply some of the fantastic effects none of them seem to work. So this tells me that something is either wrong with my graphics driver (because upon a clean install of Ubuntu it says i don't have a graphics card that can supoort Unity) or i've just simply missed a step in adding one.I've checked Nvidia X server only to get the message "You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver Please edit your x configuration file (just run `nvidia-xconfig as root)" I would love to run it in root if (and don't laugh) i only knew how :
From the many commands i've found online i've tired to either get to or find xorg.conf and if i'm mistaken doesn't exist for some reason. In a nutshell. I can't enable 3d acceleration, i can't find xorg.conf.I currently have 325m Nvidia card on my laptop, if it helps : I can give a ton of other information in necessary.

Jan 9, 2010I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 and I've been trying to boot into the live mode. I can get into the main 'Try Ubuntu without any changes' menu, but selecting that option causes the CD tray to spin up, followed by the head audibly flailing about for a minute or two causing the laptop to noticeably vibrate, followed by nothing. It doesn't boot or give any errors, it just stops. I can read the discs just fine in Windows.
So far I've tested shipit CDs of 9.10, 9.04 and 8.10. All cause the above problem. 8.04 works perfectly.

Can't mount external usb drives. There are no errors, they just don't show up anywhere.
Also Trash icon has disappeared from bottom panel, is inaccessible from Nautilus - "Sorry, could not display all the contents of "trash": Operation not supported" - and Desktop icons default to 'Keep Aligned' every time I restart.

Nov 26, 2010Wanted to restore laptop to Windows 7 and put Ubuntu on another machine.
The Laptop is an Acer and the Win 7 disks go into a propitiatory recovery screen. I have 3 choices reload Win 7 to new state, Load Win 7 and put everything in backup or Exit.
I have loaded the Ubuntu 10:10 Live and downloaded ms-sys. The problem is Ubuntu is unable to mount the HDD - not in fstab.
I have Ubuntu and Win 7 on the HDD.
