Feb 10, 2010I need to launch programs in my program and the program can be a script, a Linux executable or even a Windows executable. The first thing i tried is to use xdg-open from my program, but i can't pass arguments to it, otherwise it would have worked perfectly. Is there maybe a way to determine which program is set as default according to the mime-type of the program i want to launch? I also tried kfmclient and gnome-open, they don't allow arguments either.

Jan 9, 2011I have a folder containing the output from Windows XP "File and Settings Transfer Wizard" - the folder refuses to be imported into any flavour of Windows and the original windows system is no more - so I found a little program called fastconv [URL] which extracted all the files but fails to rename them - been working on this solidly for 3 days now, there are 47,000 files in 20gb, so naturally the customer is very concerned.
I noticed that Ubuntu cleverly recognises the type of file, assuming its looking at the contents of the file rather than the extension.
Is there any way I can automatically rename the files based on the mime type?

Oct 22, 2009I installed MS office 2003 via wine on Slackware 13. I need to know how to associate files with the right Office (msword, msexcel, msppt) program. I made launcher scripts that can launches office files from the CL, but the user on this computer will want to be able to just double click a file in dolphin and have the right office program come up.For some reason all office files show up as x-ole-storage instead of application/msword or something similar. So, even if I tell Excel to associate with that file, it will do it for Word and PowerPoint files as well.
.ppt, .doc, and .xls extensions were configured via the KDE file associations panel, but this did not help. I played around with the raw files under ~/.local/share, but I did not find the solution.The version of WINE is 1.1.24 (built from SBo SlackBuild).

Oct 30, 2010I installed a trial copy of Anquet Map V06 under Wine then decided to remove it. Afterwards I could find many remnants associated with the Anquet program which I've deleted. Except what remains is an association between my .gpx files with Anquet and that includes and any new gpx file I download. My interpretation is that during the install process an association has been created with the gpx file type and the Anquet map program. This is what I want to stop. If I download a .gpx file and look at it's properties I see- Type: GPX File -Anquet Mapsv06 (application/x-wine-extension-gpx) I found this file and it's contents-
/.local/share/mime/application/x-wine-extension-gpx.xml

I use MATE Desktop on Debian 8.1 - File Manager is Caja (1.8.2) - I put in a USB Stick whit Pics. In the Popup Window they came up, normally i can setup a Default behavior for Pics, Music ... But, in my Window the Options are not available. (Grey) The same in "Settings" from Caja (Datenträger) Data Medium.

Dec 6, 2010I tried to tag late onto a question similar to mine on stackoverflow (Find Non-UTF8 Filenames on Linux File System) to elicit further replies, with no luck so far, so here goes again... I have the same problem as the OP in the link above and convmv is a great tool to fix one's own filesystem. My question is therefore academic, but I find it unsatisfactory (in fact I can't believe) that 'find' is not able to find non standard ascii characters.
Is there anyone out there that would know what combination of options to use to find filenames that contain non standard characters on what seems to be a unicode FS, in my case the characters seem to be 8bits extended ascii rather than unicode, the files come from a Windows machine (iso-8859-1) and I regularly need to fetch them. I'd love to see how find and/or grep can do the same as convmv.

Jan 15, 2010I have been having a problem with K9 Copy whenever I try to convert a DVD to MPEG files using the method without encoding, but for some reason lately it seems to be splitting each episode I am trying to rip into about 6 or 7 pieces instead of just one.
I never usually have a problem with this, but for some reason it seems to be doing this whenever I try to rip something. I am running on Obuntu 9.10 and have K9Copy version 2.3.0 installed. I have tried installing several other versions, but it does the same thing with each.

My windows XP system has it's Documents and Settings folder on a seperate drive (D:Documents and settings) And I've located the profile (application datamozillafirefoxprofiles) Now all I need to do is put the path into the profiles.ini file in the .mozilla folder in Ubuntu. The problem is I don't know exactly how to format it.

To test: Logging in with gnome as root, I am able to create a VPN profile in Network Manager Logging in with KDE as root, I am not able to create a VPN profile in Network Connections.
Problem: Logging in as a normal user with KDE, I am not able to create a VPN profile in Network Connections. On the VPN tab, the Add... button is greyed out.
What is required to add VPN connections under KDE on Fedora 13?

Oct 25, 2010I just changed (not upgraded, I made a clean install on a new hard drive) from 9.10 to 10.10 and I have a serious problem. I just can't install new packages. Neither apt-get nor synaptic can find any package. I either get a "E: Unable to locate package <package_name>", or "E: Package <package_name> has no installation candidate" For example when I type sudo apt-get install emacs23 , I get this output: Quote:

/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lGL I went online and it looked like 'sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx-new'
would take care of this but then I get the error from the title of this post, that it can't be found. I'm afraid I'm a poor hand at installing components with Linux .

Aug 2, 2010Yesterday, after installing suggested updates since I last updated a few weeks ago, themes are broken. I am using 10.04 Lucid, now running 2.6.32-24. (Booting the previous kernel did not help.)
After rebooting, I noticed that the login screen had less attractive widgets, which persisted after I logged in. Opening the Appearance Preferences, there were no themes listed. There are a bunch of them in /usr/share/themes. If I copy the Ambiance folder from there to ~/.themes, it will appear in the dialog; but when selected, the Window Border changes, while the Controls do not.
If I run gedit from the shell, I get these messages:

There was no GTK_PATH environment variable. (Where does it and GTK_MODULES get set globally?) I tried setting it to /usr/lib, but that had no effect.
It looks like a problem finding and/or loading the required files? Permissions? Dependencies?

Nov 4, 2010after alot of work with my system, I've gotten most of it working It's a Toshiba C655-S5049 with a Atheros AR9285 Wireless card, so lots of fun getting that to work, anyway I'm trying to update my system, and it wont update, if I try update manager it won't do it because it's dealing with restricted drivers, and if I try in terminal I get E: Unable to locate package updateAnyway, any suggestions? I've been trying to work this out, and it's getting annoying.
