i always think to build own distro based on slackware as like as zenwalk, salix and vector linux. So i found the way to do it, i have changed lilo but i need to put bootsplash after loading lilo and i have to change xfce with my icons, wallpaper and menu.
View 3 RepliesI have been an Ubuntu user for the past two years and have recently made the switch to Debian, so while not new to GNU/Linux or Debian-like distributions I am still learning on many fronts. Installing squeeze directly caused issues with my Wi-Fi for some reason, so I installed lenny and performed aptitude safe-upgrade (full-upgrade kept breaking the system), and took care of stray packages manually to get a working squeeze system. My desktop environment of choice is Xfce, using XDM.
Ever since the upgrade, both the login prompt and the actual desktop have had a black background with no icons or right-click menu. I am guessing that the issue is a daemon that should be running but isn't, although I have no idea where to begin troubleshooting the issue, which is why I came here. I've uploaded at of my desktop here Right-clicking in the black space doesn't do anything, and changing my wallpaper settings is ineffective.It's not a huge problem for me, as everything else in the system appears to work, but I would like to figure out what the problem is, fix it, and maybe learn something about Debian in the process.
recently i made a bold move to slackware (13.1) i have set it out how i like (gdm, themes etc) but my xfce icon box does come up showing the icons i have chosen the rest look how i want but just not icon box, i add (always into usr/share...) i have tried editing the .theme files with the inherit= section but nope still nothing ,
if i move the icons to somewhere the pc wont use them nothing replaces them. any ideas as this an boot times are all have left to do for my "dream install"
This is my first day with ubuntu 11.04. First impression was great but now I have a problem.
I tried to change the desktop switcher to rotate cube. On ubuntu 10.10 I had installed compiz fusion. So I went to compiz setting, I looked for rotate cube and I ticked it. When I did this a couple of windows asking about enableing and disableing poped up, and unfortunatley I clicked them without reading. I assumed they were just interface related...
Know when I open my laptop I don't have any main menu bar, or tool bar at the top of the desktop nor application icons on my left. I tried "CTRL+ALT+T" but the terminal does not open. I tried opening with recovery mode but unssuccessful.

I can use display from iagemagick like so display -window root -geometry '-0-0' -resize '1920x1080>' IMG.png But cannot use it since it does not display on the right root window -- pseudo transparency in urxvt shows the wrong image as shown here. Ideally, I would like to resize any image bigger than my display. Does anyone know of a too that can do the following: Resize the image if it is bigger than some size (aka the display size). Set the images top appear at specific screen coordinates.

I hope the "software" forum is the right place to post, I don't believe I'm having any hardware issues.What I'm seeing is strange desktop corruption/stretching when compiz starts, almost as if compiz thinks my desktop is about four time wider (horizontal) than it really is and this makes nautilus go a bit crazy. All other compiz functionality seems fine. Before compiz starts (with metacity or openbox), the desktop (nautilus) appears normal. I've tried both settings for show_desktop in gconf and they both result in the same (bad) effect. If I use a gradient as my background instead of an image, I see that the gradient is also wrong in the same way (wider than it should be).
Attached are two screen shots: streched-small.jpeg is my desktop with compiz and normal-small.jpeg is the same desktop after running "metacity --replace".I have a dual head setup with an ATI X18000 running two identical monitors, both at 1280x1024. This problem does NOT happen if I disable one of the display or clone them nor does it happen if I place one monitor on top of the other. The problem only occurs in dual head mode and only if the monitors are logically positioned side by side, horizontally.I don't think it factors in but it's worth mentioning I'm doing this with an LTSP 5 thin client configuration. My thin client just happens to be a PC with an X1800 at the moment.
I installed the webilder application to automatically change the wallpaper, preferences you've specified the directory where the images but I can not change the background. Does anyone know why not change?

Since shutting down when I log in I don't get any menu. It just shows the wall paper. I then tried to log in under other and for the username I put root but it wouldn't recognize the password.
I want to give some of my directories special folder icons. For example, I have a Projects directory and I noticed that there is a special 'projects' directory icon available in my icon theme; I think that it would be nice to use that icon instead of the default directory icon.Google informs me that the file ~/.config/user-dirs.dirs can be edited to give certain directories special properties, including special icons. However, all my changes to the file get reverted after restarting my computer. Is there a way to make changes to user-dirs.dirs permanent?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently installed virtual box on debian and after it had finished my terminal informed me that I could remove some "unnecessary" software by use of sudo apt-get autoremove. When I did this, some of the icons on the desktop changed and all of the icons in the drop down menu on the bar at the top of the screen also changed to ordinary folder symbols. The theme that I was using also went away. I restarted the computer and it booted back into a shell prompt with no GUI. I tried to get back to the GUI using alt+f7 but it didn't seem to exist
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a lfs system on which I've tried installing xfce, its 75% successful...all runs but thunar, and some icons. I know the problem is somewhere around glib libpng area but don't know where..originally had a problem with /etc/gtk-2/xxx.loaders missing, fixed that but still have the second half, load thunar from console, cannot open fallback icons ... unknown image format i've recompiled glib (2.25.?) same problem, using old ish libpng and libjpeg, everything else is pretty resent. sorry for lack of exact errors etc not at computer at mo, I all have links installed, and when trying to 'display' a image on command line, it gives a view of image as if loaded in a text editor.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm using Slackware64 13.37 with Robby's Xfce 4.8 build on a laptop with two batteries. I've noticed that when the charge for one battery is depleted, the empty battery icon for the xfce4-power-manager panel applet is displayed as an "image missing" icon (see the attachments for screenshots of how this progresses).
Is this just down to a missing image, or is it more subtle than that? Has anyone else had the same problem, and if so how did you fix it? So far I've tried clearing the GTK+ icon cache and reinstalling the hicolor icon theme package as suggested in other threads in this forum, but nothing changed.
Slackware 13.1 XFCE. I've come across a strange problem which i've never had before on Slackware. I decided to set a desktop up for my sister. Being girls as they are she wanted to change the wallpaper. I showed her how, however when the machine is restarted the wallpaper turns back to default. In all my slack machines around here, i just simply right click on the desktop and change it. That makes it persistent throughout boots. I'm obviously missing something.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI installed XFCE on a machine built with the FC 15 LXDE based live CD using yum groupinstall XFCE. I got a usable XFCE session, but after a period of use, some things have gone missing. The windows don't have minimize,resize and close icons on the top bar. The settings selection for "Window Manager Tweaks" doesn't start any program. The programs that are open in the users session are not saved, even though that option is checked. Can this be explained by corruption of a single file somewhere? Or should I re-install XFCE again.

I select a wallpaper in the list, and nothing happens. I download a wallpaper and add it to the backgrounds. select it. nothing happens. I don't particularly like the default wallpaper and I hate to abandon the whole OS just because of this, but it's irritating.
