Apr 16, 2010

- I have an 64-bit machine here w/ winXP installed

- It has no CD drive so my move will be installing via USB

- I downed the latest ubuntu image and made a USB bootable via UNebootin [forgive the spelling]

- Now, my usb boots up the alternate version of karmic ubuntu with all computers except this machine that i am using.

- When i boot my USB, it says "Boot error"

- Then thats it. i go back booting up windows.

General :: Creating A Bootable Floppy From A Bootable Machine?

Jun 9, 2010

creating a bootable floppy from a bootable floppy image on a NON Linux machine I am trying to install dsl (damnsmallLinux) on one of my old Compaq 2000 Deskpro machine having 256RAM and 2 GB hardisk. (which I hope to increase to 8 or 10 GB ...can I use a larger disk capacity??) I have downloaded the floppy bootable image from the website using a machine a fedora OS machine that does not have a floppy drive. I have even converted the image file to an iso file. I can copy this image file or iso file to the Compaq machine but how do I use it as a bootable floppy? OR how do I create a bootable floppy disk from this image?

Software :: If I Dd Copy A Bootable Usb Drive To An Iso Will The Iso Be Bootable

Mar 23, 2011

If I dd copy a bootable usb drive to an iso will the iso be bootable?

I haven't tried it yet, but i'm going to. Heres the situation and tell me if I'm crazy.

I have several bootable CDs I use at work to do different things, so I went ahead and made a multi-boot usb stick with the isos on them and everything is golden. When i need something else, I am able to slap the ISO on the usb stick, edit the menu.lst and I'm good to go.

The problem is, for some of our equipment I have a bootable USB stick that I have to use. I tried copying the files on the bootable USB to my multi-boot usb and setup grub to boot it (which admittedly I'm no expert at), but have had no luck.

So now I'm thinking, I'll use dd to copy the bootable USB stick to an iso (using bs=2048) and then do my normal setup with an ISO and maybe it will work.

Ubuntu Installation :: 9.10 On USB Bootable But Too Big?

Feb 26, 2010

I have managed to install Ubuntu on an 8GB USB flash drive using the usb creator, it boots up well no problem though it does seem to stop and idle a bit in the middle of the booting process.I noticed that after installation I only have about 2GB of free space left, how much is Ubuntu chewing?!!!

I'd like to create a bootable Ubuntu system that doesn't take up that much space, and doesn't prompt me with liveCD stuff (ie. country, installation methods etc). I was thinking of Moblin remix. I'd like the more basic Ubuntu configuration with the default device drivers to hook up to the internet, display and peripheral devices but not all the software if that would keep the size down.

Ubuntu :: Get A Bootable USB Drive Created?

May 2, 2010

My boyfriend has an old IBM Thinkpad that he said I can use to install Ubuntu on and use it as a 2nd computer. Here's the problem, the computer doesn't have a CD drive, but does have USB. I've been trying to get a bootable USB drive created, but with no luck.

The USB drive is 2GB. Which Ubuntu would fit on here? The Thinkpad has a 20GB hard drive, and about 512MB memory. The processor I think is a Pentium III. I've even tried installing Ubuntu through the wubi.exe file, but it won't load. The current OS is a Japanese Windows 98. Do I need a bigger flash drive? The netbook remix version? or something else?

Ubuntu :: Format USB Drive Set Non-bootable

Sep 27, 2010

I made a bootable Ubuntu installation within my USB stick but now I want to delete it.

First I tried deleting all hidden and no-hidden files and folders but obviously I need to reset the MBR or something.

In System->Administration->Disk Utility I formatted the drive having now a blank device (FAT), but still the Ubuntu image is mounted.

Then I clicked on 'Edit Partition' and uncheck the Bootable checkbox but it returns an error (whether mounted or unmounted the drive is).

This is the return log file of the error:

Quote:

Error modifying partition: helper exited with exit code 1: In part_change_partition: device_file=/dev/sdd, start=19456, new_start=19456, new_size=4013917184, type=0x0b
Entering MS-DOS parser (offset=0, size=4022337024)

[Code].....

How do I completely format the drive removing this bootable Ubuntu installation?

I've tried using Google and found a couple of ways, some suggested using Unetbootin.Would would be the best way to go about this? Also is the encryption system with Ubuntu install strong? It doesn't give you the ability to chose the algorithm like TrueCrypt does.

Larger pic: [URL]

I have tried to make the usb in both ubuntu and win7 with the same results. I have created a working usb boot before but with an older version. I have come across this problem sometime ago when I tried to burn kubunt on a cd. Think it was the 10.04 version.
