Ubuntu :: Trash Not Deleting So Unable To Use Flash Drive

May 30, 2010

My trash won't delete and it is causing me to not be able to use my flashdrive. When I tell my trash to empty it will either say it will but the files will still be there or it will say a can't b/c i didn't delete it from my trash(screenshot). I don't know what to do to get it to get rid of the files since I tried telling it to bypass the trash and that didn't do anything.

Ubuntu :: Deleting Files On Flash Drive

When I delete files from my usb flash drive on my Karmic laptop (press del key), the properties of the drive remain unchanged (available space/used space). It looks like the files/folders have been deleted, but when I go to my windows machines, the files and folders are now in a folder marked "Trash".Am I missing a step when attempting to delete the information when connected to my ubuntu laptop?

Ubuntu :: Deleting Files / Trash Empty / Disk Still Full

Sep 27, 2010

I've been getting this error message:"The configuration defaults for GNOME Power Manager have not been installed correctly. Please contact your computer administrator."a few times, and it turns out to be because of low disk space. No worry, I empty the trash uninstall unneeded programs and clean out the downloads folder that filled up my disk. And all is ok. But not this time.Since I can't use X, I delete stuff from the terminal, and also make sure to clean out the .Trash in both /home and /root. But still the disk is full. I delete more stuff, but it doesn't even seem to go to .Trash. It disappears, but no more disk space.

Programming :: Bash Script: Move Files To Trash Instead Of Deleting?

Jul 10, 2010

I've tried a number of suggestions found on the internet and none of them work. Here's one:Code:mv "$x" ~/.Trash/...where $x is the pathname of the file passed to the script.I've also tried different paths to Trash - on Desktop, in Home folder, in my user folder, it makes no difference. Either nothing happens, or more often, the file is simply copied to my desktop or userfolder with the name "Trash".What is the actual path to the Trash folder and how can I move files there? I'm using Ubuntu 10.04.

It looks like when UNetBootin goes through the process of putting it on the flash drive, it completely skips aking it bootable. Any suggestions? Maybe it is just UNetBootin.

I downloaded and ran the Universal USB Installer. It shows up as:

Universal-USB-Installer-v1.7.4.exe size on disk 816 KB (835,584 bytes)

I get 56 7-zip Diagnostic messages. A small sample shows:

Should I download the iso file again, or have I missed something in the install? I'm running Windows XP sp3 on an IBM T60 Thinkpad

Ubuntu Installation :: Unable To Boot From USB Flash Drive

Jun 28, 2011

I am trying to install ubuntu 11.04 from a bootable USB flash drive. As i couldnt create the USB using the inbuilt usb creator which came with the .iso file i had downloaded, i had used universal USB installer to create it. It took a lot of time to created the bootable pendrive.

I had copied the contents of the pendrive thus created to a folder on my hard disk and named it 'PENDRIVE'. Later i had formatted the pendrive and used it for other purposes.

Today, i wanted to install ubuntu on another computer, so i copied the contents of this folder to my pendrive (instead of creating a bootable usb drive using universal USB installer again) and renamed my pendrive as 'PENDRIVE'. But when i tried to boot from it (i had changed the boot order of my computer accordingly) i got this message, 'remove any removable cd or media and press any button to restart'. Until i removed the pendrive my system refused to start and i was unable to install ubuntu. Why did this happen?

Ubuntu :: Deleting A Disk Drive ?

Feb 16, 2011

Ok so basically this isn't my harddrive but hear me out. It's a known issue but it only happened after him downloading stuff off priate bay. The harddrive is not detected on BIOS, so you can't boot through it, just the CD Drive is now detected. You can't use SAFE mode as it reverts to another issue, a black screen with a white cursor, no keyboard commands work.

No restoring disks will fix it nor master disks, it's literally a bad *** issue. Thou I can still load things via CD Drive so I used the Acronis Bootable Media and surely enough, it could anaylse data on the harddrives. I thought maybe i'll try PE Bart but once again, loads up to Black screen with White Cursor. So I put in Ubuntu and yes, I can get on the GUI, but I can't install the operating system.

There would always been an issue. something about in/out whilst installing but as long a I can use the tools, then we go onto Disk Utility. When I try to format, the Error Message apprears stating : Eroor creating File System: helped exited with error code 1: Error calling fsync(2) on /dev/sda2: Input/Output error. This would be the same error i would get via installing and I would have to ignore and eventually whilst installing, from being complete on the right hand side, it would say ERROR or ABORTED after 70,000.

General :: Deleting Hidden Partitions On USB Drive

Feb 19, 2010

I recently bought a Buffalo 500GB ministation usb with "optional disk encryption". Turns out, I'm having one hell of a time trying to remove the "optional" from the drive. I figured I could just delete the program that is on the disk, and go on my way. That doesn't seem to be the case.

fdisk /dev/sdc1, then "p" showed that there were 4 partitions. So I deleted them one by one. "n" gave me a new partition. "t" I used 87 because I will be using it on windows. Then "w" to write everything.
mkfs -t ntfs /dev/sdc1 - all went well.
fsck -f -y /dev/sdc1 - all went well

Then I took the removed the drive and plugged into Windows only to find that the "optional" is still there. It actually creates a virtual drive with the "optional" software. So I tried it over again. I tried fdisk only to see that the partitions were back (as if they were never removed). I removed them again, and used primary partition as linux and wrote to disk. As a hunch, I checked permissions. Can't remember what it said, but I did change them.

chmod 777 /dev/sdc1

Then in a last hope of desperation, before coming to work today, I decided to dd the drive.
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdc1 bs=4k conv=notrunc
Is it possible that the "optional" stuff is actually hard coded onto a chip, or something inside the drive and I may never get rid of it?

Ubuntu :: Unable To Delete Simple Backup Folder From Trash

Jul 17, 2010

I'm a beginner at backing up my Ubuntu system, but I've set Simple Backup to do a backup once a week. I deleted the oldest of these files, but now it's sitting in my Trash and I can't empty it. I get a permission denied error for the folders within the backup folder in the trash, yet I can't restore the folder either - Ubuntu says it 'failed to determine the original path' for the folder. I've just discovered this in Xubuntu Jaunty, but I'm confident the same will happen in any other WM I choose (I have several installed - I like variety ).

It's not a huge file, but it's hanging out there and I'd like to get it either deleted or restored. Possibly I oughtn't to have deleted it in the first place (it usually lives in /var/backup, which I can't access except as root). The files, which I probably deleted /as/ root, show up in my user trash rather than root's trash. I found the trash in ~/.local/share/Trash/files, but I'm not sure if just deleting them as root would be a good.

Fedora :: Unable To Recover Folder From Trash Bin / Fix It?

Apr 19, 2011

I switched from OpenSUSE to Fedora and I moved a folder full of coursework and a backup of that folder (which was pretty outdated) onto a usb. Once I had installed Fedora, I first deleted the outdated backup, intending to make another fresh one but then I realised that somehow the original files hadn't copied from OpenSUSE onto the USB.

The situation I'm in now is that I only have the outdated backup in the trash can so I need that back but I get the following error message when I try and recover it:

Quote:

Error while copying to "desktop". There was an error getting information about the destination.

And then when I select the "Show more details" drop-down:

Quote:

Fedora :: Trash Does Not Show My Files/folders I Moved From NTFS Windows Drive

May 25, 2011

I am an Ubuntu refugee. Allow me to explain what happened. I am dual booting with Windows 7 and F15 x64.

(1) I wanted to created a shortcut of my "Documents" folder in my Windows in Nautilus
(2) I opened the Windows drive by double clicking the drive under Devices, and navigated to my "Documents" folder (F15 already has ntfs-3g installed so no hassles there)
(3) I then dragged the folder to the sidebar to place it under the Trash icon--but for some reason, it would not let me do this, and accidentally got placed in the Trash bin.
(4) problem is I can't see this folder in the Trash bin (it is not even hidden)
(5) To check if the Trash bin actually captures items when we move files/folders to Trash, I tried sending a folder from my Home directory to Trash, and the folder appears in the Trash; it can even be restored to Home.
(6) Only files/folders from the NTFS formatted Windows drive do not appear in the Trash folder if sent there.
(7) I have Google searched this problem, but to no avail.
(8) I even thought that because the drive is not mounted 'officially' I would mount it using command line:

Code:

(9) But still I can't see the folders in the Trash
(10) Interestingly, when I try to unmount the Windows drive 'formally' then I get a message if I want to "empty the Trash"--I obviously chose not to--so I know there is my Windows Documents folder in there somehere.
