View 1 Replies View RelatedI burnt the Ubuntu 9.10 ISO to CD and installed on a freshly nuked Dell 2350. It is pentium 4 at 1.8 MHZ with 512 RAM. Just a spare machine I have sitting there. Install went fine, restarted box, boot from hard drive. I get the little white Ubuntu symbol on a black screen and then a black screen with un-occupied white tool bars at top and bottom of screen and a functional mouse pointer, then nothing. It freezes there.
If I restart by holding the power switch in it occasionally shows multiple CPU overtemp messages and freezes with totally black screen. I can run the CD live and everything works like a champ. I'm going to like Ubuntu once I have this sorted out. If I boot from CD and choose the run from first hard drive option, everything loads and works fine. I was able to remove CD, update and save preferences, etc..
On one occasion, I was able to restart and boot from hard drive and it worked fine but usually it freezes at previously mentioned black screen with white bars top and bottom with mouse pointer. Please excuse my ignorance as I have very little knowledge of the inside workings of computers. I didn't even know about burning ISO's or changing boot orders until reading online. For what it's worth, the computer worked fine with no known hardware problems when it was running XP. It also is completely stock with no mods or added/replaced hardware.
I just downloaded Fedora 10, burned the CD, installed the program, etc. Everything went just fine, but after rebooting the screen turns gibberish, totally unreadable. I now it's the video card, NVIDIA but how do I fix it? I installed Fedora 8 which worked just great, no issues. My machine is Intel Core 2 7300, Geforce 9600GT my other machine, is AMD-64 5000, Geforce 9500 GT, same problem happens when trying to install Centos 5.

I have done much searching, etc. and cannot find any broken packages. I have tried many many different commands which have mostly done nothing.I seem to be in a similar boat to this person: URL...
I plugged in a second monitor to my new Meerkat installation and xorg stopped working.
When I took the monitor away it still wouldn't work, so I tried entering with safe graphics and that wouldn't work.
I uninstalled xorg and reinstalled and ran the dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg but still no luck.
I have tried reverting the vesa driver but it still won't work. The screen flashes like it's trying but just gives up.
I don't know what to do now except reinstall the partition.
The file system on my computer has become completely confused and out of sync. When I go into "documents," for example, I get the MPlayer for audio/video! I go into "home file" and get an audio player for streaming FM!Not every file is out of sync, but many are.I believe this situation started a few weeks ago when I decided to install MPlayer. I like MPlayer and especially its flexibility with regard to playing several kinds of media. I downloaded MPlayer and tried to make it my "default" player; I think that may have been the problem. Ever since then my files have been doing weird things and I'm unable to retrieve things (like documents) that I really need. Any suggestions as to how I can begin to clean up this mess
View 9 Replies View RelatedI had it working perfectly everything worked including my headset. The only problem was certain programs were too quiet for my taste and seeing as i have a laptop and cant manually turn up the speakers i looked for a solution and found
Code: [URL] I followed those directions to try and boost the poor sound volume that has plagued me in ubuntu distros. Instead sound sparsly works. It is quieter than was, and if chrome is open at all no sound will play at all in rhythmbox or amarok(the play button dont even works it just sits at 0:00) Only after chrome closes does it play my music files again but only on this partition. As now my windows partition thats also located on this fakeraid just magically disappeared.
how to fix this as i dont even know what i did to begin with. how i can trash kde and start over from within gnome(havent tried to see if it works there yet though) EDIT: Logged back in to gnome and everything works fine. The missing partition is auto mounted like i wanted, the sound is perfectly fine. Obviously something got screwed up in the kde config but i dont know what or what to look for as i have never used kde before.
How do I remove rhytmbox. I cannot remove and reinstall some plugin that are not working right. They need root permission. How can I remove the program from the roo and start over.

I have read that you can easily disable hibernate from System>Preferences>Power Management but as far as i can see I have no options in there to do such.I found this and similar pages: URL... I do not have the key named can_hibernate anywhere under my gnome-power-manager.I read that this is the option that only removes the "hibernate" option from the power menu, but actually does not disable the service, can anyone confirm this?URL...
Just curious but disabling hibernate in linux save you hardisk space like it does in windows (still quite new here)?
I have ubuntu network remix on my netbook. How do I completely wipe off ubuntu and install Windows xp on my netbook? My netbook doesn't come with a cd/dvd reader so I have to install it through a pendrive. I got my own windows xp iso ripped from my desktop, ready to go.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI just installed Ubuntu 9.04 again on my PC after a long time. Everything was working fine. No problems at all. After running all the necessary updates, I wanted to install Adobe Flash. This I did by going to Adobe's site. I selected the APT version for 9.04+. It was installing fine UNTIL there was a power cut. Since then I have been trying out various methods of repair suggested in these forums. But again and again get the same message:Quote:

I decided to install a dual boot on my Sony Vaio recently.Installation has not gone well.I attempted to install latest version desktop 10.10 with a CD. I was able to choose a language, then screen went black. I heard some music after a few minutes but no video. I was eventually able to boot the system several times under recovery mode. Several other forums and posts suggest that the problem was with my Vaio graphics card (NVIDIA GeForce GT 230M).After the initial dual boot screen, where I'm able to choose operating system, if I choose either Ubuntu or Ubuntu safe mode a bunch of text scrolls by and ends with.
View 1 Replies View RelatedIs an ubuntu live cd totally secure from intrusion? Stated another way, even if someone knows my ip address, can the live cd environment be hacked into in any way so that another could monitor what I am doing on my computer? From my understanding the live cd is read only, so that would prevent anything malicious being installed on it. I am curious if there are other ways a box running a live cd could be tapped into.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI've upgraded now from 10.04 to 10.10 to now 11.04, and I believe I have so much cruft in my system that it's become unstable.I thought I could selectively rename certain folders in my root (such as .gnome, .gnome2, etc, while logged of (i.e. from a ctrl-alt-f1 console), but that really didn't seem to work.I'd prefer not to copy to external hard drive and re-install fresh. However, I'm using KDE now for stability, as neither gnome nor unity will run well.

The mouse doesn't work, I can't open the terminal, I can't do anything! My only option is to press the restart button on my laptop.I don't know if this is of any relevance, but I use UbuntuStudio, but have been using the proper Linux Kernel. I only selected the RealTime kernel if I'm working on audio editors, which I haven't done since updating to Lucid.y laptop is an HP pavilion zv5000. It has an ATI 9000/9100 graphics card, about 768 mp of ram, and a P4 3GHz processor.
View 3 Replies View RelatedOur company had a vendor doing some data transformation work for us that we recently decided to take in house. They were good enough to transfer all their processes to a pc we gave them and it's running great. Only thing is that its a linux OS and I have no idea how to do anything other than what to click on to run programs.
Its OS version 2.6.34.8-68.fc13.i686.PAE. KDE SC version:4.5.5
I know that at the bottom left where there would be a windows button on a Windows PC there is a blue K button. That's ALL I know.
First thing I'd like to know is how to totally back up this system OS and all so that if something happens I can load it onto another PC. I'm pretty panicked because it IS an old pc it's on. Then, I'd like to know what is this exactly and how can I learn what I have here
I want to start totally from scratch on Linux server I installed the other day. No dual boot, no personal files, etc... on it.
Fdisk -l shows the following:
Disk /dev/sda: 320g
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 38913 cylanders
units = cylanders of 16065 *512 = 822...bytes
[code]....
All the info I have found has multiple steps, but in my situation is there just 1 easy command to do this? If not, can I just reinstall from CD and it will reformat and let me customize more? If I have to use the several steps to reformat, can you explicitly type out exact commands for me? I am completely new, have to learn all this, and all the referece books/materials kind of scatter the info around.
i'm running debian lenny - latest stable i have recently installed smartcam (mobile phone as webcam over bluetooth) from .deb package , get errors of unmet dependency , but application works like a charm, unfortunately broken dependences block my aptitude , i cant fix them either as latest stable use older versions of dependences even in backports... how do i mark smartcam package as not broken and release my apt?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI have been trying to decide which distro of linux i want to use, and i decided to go with debian because i keep reading that it is very stable. I currently am installing it in in virtualbox first to make sure i like it. I wanted to use xfce instead of gnome but forgot to specify that in the beginning. The install takes a while and i didn't want to start all over if that is possible. I am wondering how i could completely replace gnome with xfce.

View 3 Replies View RelatedAt the moment im using a live linux distribution and running a program to test the security of my website. Unfortunatly this program is running from, and seems to fill up rootfs, at which point the program crashes and dissapears.
Is there any way to force a program to run totally from RAM, which i would presume would automatically use a swap file because of the in built memory management in linux, of which is a 30GB partiton.
I know i could just install the distribution to the partition instead, however it has peaqued my interest in just how much control linux has over the programs running on it.
So the question is - Is it possible to run a program totally from RAM, forcing all inputs/outputs to be re-directed to/from RAM to keep the rootfs clear whilst the application does what it needs to?
Currently working on the targeted policy, I need a help in doing the following things as quick as possible:
1- How to create a totally new SELinux user (not mapping new linux user to SELinux user) I want a new user with no roles or with a maximum of 1 role. I also need how to compile the new user so I can used it for mapping users. At the time, I've tried creating a new file inside /etc/selinux/targeted/contexts/users similar to the other users inside this directory, but it did not actually seem to appear when using the command semanage to list SELinux users : semanage user -l
2- How to create a totally new SELinux role (empty for now) ? and how to make the relation between this new role and domains or types.
3- How to create new domain, actually following some old instructions I created the .fc and .te files, but not the .if file, which is more complicated than the other 2 file.
slightly embaressing but luckily I had firefox open at the time. I have managed to delete my panel at the bottom of my screen and I'm totally stumped as to how to get it back.I'm pretty new to linux, having dabbled with it in the past.. finding it much better than said mainstream OS *Ahem* .The reason I deleted it by accident was I right clicked on it and deleted panel thinking I'd just added another panel to it. D'oh. My firefox isn't touching the top of the screen either, I think I created a panel up there but I can't see it or anything
