Ubuntu :: Tether From Win7 Laptop To Desktop
May 23, 2010
first thing first - started using Linux for the first time yesterday (LONG time windows person) and I'm enjoying it very well, so if I do manage to get any help can it be in noob-language? and when i say that I mean absolutely dumbed down as mch as possible.
I just now figured out how to get terminal open.
now my current internet situation is very weird, my only choice at the moment is to connect my windows 7 laptop to my 10.04 Ubuntu desktop via ethernet cord. Before when i had both win7 on both machines it worked out perfectly with ICS and had no problems, but now with linux it doesnt work at all.

I've just got a few questions about the last steps of my backup server. I've got ubuntu server 10.10. The 2 machines I want to backup are a xp desktop and win7 laptop. All connected via router. I have sshd, samba server and rsync packages installed on the server. I don't want all 3 mirrored so should each comp have it's own partition on the server or could it be setup as /media/desktop and /media/laptop?
Currently the server firewall is setup with ufw as deny all incoming allow all outgoing. I want to use ssh with rsync and samba so do I only need to leave port 22 open and allow a max of 2 connections at at time as fire wall rules? Also what do I need to do with permissions on windows? Do I just enable sharing on the files I want backed up? Can I only allow sharing with the server and no other computers? Last question for now I think, I will be backing up from the server as local and the windows machines as remote, what software do I need to install on the windows machines to allow backing up with rsync and file sharing with samba.

I have a laptop with win7 and I would like to connect to the internet through my desktop pc's connection. I have Karmic on the desktop and use a cable modem and I'm thinking about buying a router to solve this problem but I wouldn't know how to set it up in Ubuntu nor which router would be the best or easiest to set up. I saw this site [URL] and I'm torn between the TP-Link TL-WR741ND Wireless Lite N Router and the D-Link Wireless N Router DIR-615, because these are the cheapest ones and I can't afford much more than that.

I'm using 9.10 on a laptop that has Win7 in another partition. Within Win7 I get strong full bars for the wifi signal strength. On the same laptop in the same location, I get only 2 bars (low) wifi signal strength when I'm in Ubuntu 9.10.
I'm using the wifi transceiver built into my Acer Aspire 5732Z laptop.

I had experience with earlier Red Hat Linux dual boot with Windows 98 and XP. I now have Fedora 9 and also a Compaq Presario CQ61 with Windows 7 Home edition. I have made it so that my Laptop now boots from its CD/DVD drive instead of the hard drive which it was. Only so far when I run Fedora's 9 Desktop Live CD everything seems OK until I get to a non graphics window for logging in and there I am stuck.how I am going to log in and go into Linux Fedora's windows view.

I have installed Ubuntu (both 10.10 and 11.04 pre-release) on my laptop but my battery is not recognized and it is detected as a desktop system rather than a laptop. I have tried the cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT1/state method but the directory doesn't exist. I have tried another guide to paste the battery info into this directory but it doesn't allow me to do that and says that the directory doesn't exist, even though I'm trying to make it. I tried it in root nautilus and even on an install of Lubuntu (with a root file manager) but it still failed to budge. I really don't know what to do as I have tried all the guides on the internet that I could find.

I have done a standard install of Ubuntu 10.4 Desktop. All I have changed is to edit the smb.conf to set the correct workgroup. Everything is working fine, except that I am not able to connect to Ubuntu from my Windows 7 pc using Windows' built-in tool. That should work, shouldn't it? Do I need to edit more settings?

When I first got my BlackBerry, USCellular said I couldn't tether with Linux. That's not so, all you need is BlueTooth (USB adapter, built in, whatever)
You just install Blueman
Code:
sudo apt-get install blueman
Search for your BlackBerry, Pair it to your computer, then go to Devices > Serial ports > Dial Up Networking.
Your wireless connection should be in Network Manager. NOTE: You may have to right-click on NM and setup Numbers, Passwords, Usernames. I did.

I have upgraded to 10.10 and have lost all ability to tether my iPhone via USB or Bluetooth on my Gateway LT24 series Netbook. I'm using an ASUS Bluetooth USB dongle. Here is the output I get to see the status of my connection:
markvv@netbook:~$ dmesg | tail -n10
[ 48.239050] cfg80211: Regulatory domain: 98
[ 48.239056] (start_freq - end_freq @ bandwidth), (max_antenna_gain, max_eirp)
[Code].....
In Blueman, I have my Bluetooth setup as a Network Access Point, dnsmasq enabled. PAN and DUN support are set to NetworkManager. I cannot change these to Blueman (not sure if I should be able to).
I really need my tethering feature to work. Or, should I revert back to 10.04.

I have a 9.10 installed on my USB stick drive and I am trying to get my iPhone to tether with bluetooth. I followed a guide, (installed blueman, connected to phone, enabled tethering, set to trust device and provide network access). The computer connects to the network and says it is successful, and the iPhone has the blue flashing banner saying it is now tethering, but firefox doesn't connect to the internet.
Is there a way to force it to use the new tethered connection?

Just installed Ubuntu 10.10 onto my new netbook from a USB stick. The laptop came with Win7 Starter, which I kept on a small partition. Installation was apparently successful, but when I start up the computer, it will go straight to Win7 and GRUB doesn't appear.

I had vista installed, then I installed Win7 on a dif. partition. Then I installed Ubuntu 11.4 over the vista partition (formatted first), and now I can't get into Win7. I'm really at a loss. I've tried the Win7 disk, and it doesn't detect the Win7 installation. I've also tried sudo update-grub, and it doesn't seem to detect the win7 install either. I've tried making the Win7 partition bootable using gpart as well. I'd like to dual boot Win7 and Ubuntu, however I need to do that.

just finished installing Ubuntu to my dell mini 10v netbook. I really like it so far but I have hit a problem that may be a potential deal breaker. I have a CDMA HTC Hero phone that I have rooted. I installed the "wireless tether for root users" app on my phone and use it ALL the time to go online on my netbook through my phone on windows. However Ubuntu 9.10 does not seem to connect to my phone running this app. It sees the SSID, and i tell it to connect, and then I just get that circle thing for a couple of minutes then it gives up and connects to my main router if its in range.

This is on Lucid, using a Dell Mini. I installed the required packages for a USB tether to my iPhone. Network Manager recognized it immediately as wwan0, but it doesn't connect. Also, it never asks me for the password to connect to the Personal Hotspot (as it does when I can connect from Windows).

This is the first time I have run into issues mounting windows shares but I really can't figure this out. Can someone put me out of my windows misery please.
First off, last week I rebuilt my work PC fromWIN7 32bit to WIN7 64bit since then I can no longer mount the window share on my ubuntu server:
I recreated my windows share called "Linux" and used the properties, advanced sharing and added everyone, full access and my domain account full access.
If I browse to \ipaddress I can see my share and access it. From a XP machine I can see the share and access it.
From linux I use the same mount point as before, /linux I use the same fstab and it fails
Code:
I try this manually now:
Code:
Next I try to mount it:
Code:
I looked at my firewall rules and they seem ok.
Next test was connecting to my 2nd pc on windows XP no probs mounted first time.
What is wrong with my new Win 7 setup?

if anyone here could recommend a cellphone. My main requirement is that it should tether as a 3.5g modem via USB to a PC running Fedora 13. I have previously used a Nokia to good effect, but their standpoint on privacy is making me look for a different brand.

When I try to ssh from my desktop to laptop I keep getting a connection refused error, doesnt matter what port I use either. For the heck of it I tried to ssh from my desktop into my desktop (that is correct, not a typo) and I got this error earlier today. Im kinda concerned.

Before the update I could tether.Same machine dual boots to Win7-64bit and can tether just fine.I re-installed the libimobile packages, but my linux no longer recognizes the iphone as a network device.t DOES pop-up some boxes asking if I want to play the media, or view the photos on the iPhone - so that part is working

I have a laptop and 2 desktops all running ubuntu 10.04. The desktops are slower than sh|t and I've already upgraded their memory to the highest that they'll take, they're just really old. The laptop is super fast and amazing. Is there any way to use the operating system of my laptop from either one or both of the 2 desktops? I know how to connect to my laptop from the desktop over ethernet, and once i accidentally logged in to my laptop from a desktop in the terminal, then forgot I was logged in to the laptop and entered sudo reboot and rebooted my laptop, but I'm not trying to browse it, I want to use the video of the laptop over the ethernet to the desktop, and use the desktop's video to be a second monitor, and be able to use the mouse and keyboard of either to input. Or somehow tie them all in together and combine all their memory to running a single operating system somehow?

I have samba running on Ubuntu 11.04 Laptop box. I can see and access all the Win7 x64 Professional desktop shared folders from the Ubuntu box. When I try to browse the network from the Windows 7 Professional X64 Desktop file browser, the Ubuntu Laptop doesn't even show up. Both are in the same work group. Mapping the network brings similar results. Both have shared folders and drives. I can ping the Ubuntu box from the command line from Win7. I typed \192.168.1.45 (the laptop's router address) from the RUN command. It said the laptop wouldn't allow connection. Samba shares are set for "visible" & "writable." The user name is set for my access; yet no joy. I ran the Win7 trouble shooter, and it said that my $Print share folder wouldn't accept connection. I deleted that share; yet still no joy.
HOMEGROUP is the name of the Home Network on both machines. User names and passwords the same. Windows firewall disabled. Norton firewall set to allow the laptop. I don't think the firewall on Ubuntu is causing it. I installed UFW and GUFW to Ubuntu for graphical interface with networks. Opened GUFW and the "ENABLED" check box isn't. So it isn't running, is it? Everything about the firewall is default. I've never enabled it. Firewall on router disabled. Both machines access the internet. Both machines can ping the other. But Windows 7 does not see my Ubuntu laptop on my network. Also, if this may have something to do with it, when I boot up or reboot, I had a message, "Can't update .iceauthority." I've googled this to try to find a fix, and am THINK I fixed it. Somehow, Ubuntu changed the name of the owner of HOME/USER to "root/user. I repaired that. Still no joy. Can this have any coincidental effect by being related to one another?
