Ubuntu :: Sync Music Files Between Computers

Jun 12, 2010

I have a music archive on several computers, from time to time do I add, remove or change the archive on one computer. To keep this changes will I have to copy the new version of the music archive to all the other computers.

is there a program that can sync the music files. Let say that I update the info in one music file, then will the sync program notice the newer version and replace the old file with the new files on all the other computers.

I guess I would need a dedicated server for this where all changes are stored with some kind of version number of the music archive. Since not having a server would make everything (I guess) much more complicated. All computers would have to communicate with each other to check for a new version instead of only communicate with one computer (the server).

Software :: Rsync-like Program To Sync Files Between Computers?

Apr 4, 2010

I'm looking for a way to sync directories between two computers, in a "two-way" fashion. Basically, I have a laptop and I have a desktop, and I want to keep a particular directory synced between the two machines. The easiest thing would be to have some kind of networked filesystem, but obviously this won't work because the laptop may or may not be connected to the internet at any moment. At any time I might be editing files on the desktop or on the laptop, and when the laptop is connected to the internet, I'd like all files on both machines to be synced to their most recent versions.

I thought I could do this with rsync but now that I've looked into a bit more it seems like it works only for "one-way" syncing. In other words files are synced from a server to a client or vice versa, but not both at once. First of all, am I right about that? And second, is there a program that will do what I want to do? OK, I guess you could do it with some SVN kind of thing but that seems like overkill. I guess if there's nothing out there it shouldn't be too hard to write a script myself to do it.

Ubuntu :: Sync All Data In /home Between Two Computers?

Feb 6, 2010

i was wondering if there was a way to sync two computers so that all the data in the /home directory was exactly the same on both, and it was done automatically as soon as theyre both turned on and connected to the same network?

i have a laptop and a desktop that i want to basically mirror each other.

i take my laptop everywhere, so i want to be able to do work on it, take it home, turn on my desktop and as soon as my laptop is connected to the network, it'll automatically sync the files to the desktop.

i want the reverse to also occur - meaning i do some work on the desktop and have it automatically sync up to my laptop while im working on the desktop if the laptop is on at the same time, or as soon as i turn the laptop on.

i had rsync set up before, but i had to initiate it manually, and i was never sure if it was overwriting files or appending.

Networking :: Sync PDA & Other Computers Across Home Network

Apr 17, 2010

I am interested and looking forward to get a smartphone or a personal data assistant with calendar/ email/ contacts just like the iphone does.My intention is to be able to sync my smartphone's data with my home server that actually carries my PIM applications. Basically, during the day when I am not home I will modify or add/remove data from the phone. When I arrive home I would like to be able to sync my changes to my server. My laptop will be reconfigured to retrieve and sync from that server.

Proudly running with Slackware on ALL my machines (gotta love Slack!), and Apple being **** by not supporting open source and linux environment, it seems that it will be difficult to have something working out of the box and will probably require jail-breaking the device, etc.. I don't want to rely on external services such as Google calendar except for the email from Gmail.

Ubuntu Networking :: Music Server Old Computers

Jun 8, 2011

Alright so i'm sure it's been talking about millions of times, but im fresh with linux so im hoping to get a good answer to what im thinking.so to start the question is can i link a laptop to a desktop? reason is the laptop is decent enough to power a system, over 1ghz, 512ram, 40gb HDD..desktop is like..P3 500mhz 256 ram uhm i believe larger than 40gb.i also have two externals i currently use for my everyday laptop. 250GB fat32, 1TB NTFS.i would be willing to give one up for the server obviously to hold music ~90GB and obviously growing. preferably just the 250.It would mostly be shared with my own laptop which runs Ubuntu11.04/Win7. PS3 also if possible, not necessary.I'm thinking of putting Debian on the old system, i put it on the laptop so far, runs very nice. but it truely has nothing, and i didn't really select anything on install because i hit the enter button for the check boxes of servers by accident lol.

It would be setup via ethernet to my home modem (bell wireless modem).I would be willing to use one or the other as the server, i dont have to like the laptop and desktop together. the desktop simply has my 7.1 soundcard so im trying to keep it in the mix. i suppose i could put them together at the modem to ethernet them in.not sure what else i should describe! hopefully that gives it a good kickstart and some brilliant answers!

Ubuntu :: Can't Sync Music On A Droid

May 24, 2011

I've tried what seems to be the best music software. Banshee and Amarok seem to be the most popular and I can't get either to sync. Banshee doesn't do it properly, it "syncs" but roughly 1/3 of the songs don't show up. I believe this to be due to the Amazonmp3 folder which I did move everything out of. Next I tried Amarok. I guess it's a bad case of user error because I can't even figure out how to sync it at all. All I know of right now is to manually create the m3u file in gedit. 11.4 btw and it's a droidX

Ubuntu :: RhythmBox Sync - No Music On IPod

Aug 15, 2010

I'm new to ubuntu and I was a little concerned the jump over would be a little complicated. I was happy to see that almost everything on my external hd worked perfectly and rhythmbox plays all of the music files I have. I attempted to add music to my ipod (8gb iTouch specifically). It seemed that none of the music would come up on the iPod, even though rhythmbox showed that the files were on there. After a little time (and if I did something other than wait, I'm unaware) the files popped up on my iPod. Later in the week, I tried to add more music, with similar problems. I've removed and added the files several times and allowed the iPod to fully sync, but they still won't come up. I don't understand why it would work sometimes and not other times.

1. The system somehow doesn't recognize it and doesn't handle it the way it handles external hard drives. However, the device is recognized by amarok. How do I change this circumstance or if this is normal, why?
2. How do I synchronize music to it, using Amarok?

General :: Having Music Library In Sync On Several Devices?

Jun 24, 2011

I have several devices (server, tower, notebook, android phone). I want to have my music library in sync on all of them. So what I thought of was a revision control system that just takes care of CRUD actions (or rather CRD). Maybe it could keep track of the files using their initial name and tracking any renaming or deletion. All popular software I know (git, svn, cvs, ...) is out of question because they save too much overhead (they diff the binary files).

Streaming doesn't work either for me because I don't always have an internet connection. Synchronizing the music using tools like unison is very inefficient too because I write metadata to the files so their hashsum, timestamp and size change constantly. If there is a diff or sync tool that ignores minor changes in size and ignores timestamp and permissions and so on, it would maybe be fine but I don't know one.

Ubuntu Servers :: Mdadm Music Corruption - Link ITunes Library To The Music Files Via A Samba Share?

Dec 19, 2010

I've been building my digital music collection for some time and used to house it on a local drive with no quality issues. A while back I built myself a file server using ubuntu and mdadm in a raid1 configuration to protect against potential drive failure. I link my iTunes library to the music files via a samba share and everything works great on the surface. I've started to notice that random songs are becoming corrupted with pops clicks and silent pauses. I'll even re-download an album and notice that it's corrupted a few weeks later. Now I'm at a loss to what is causing this issue; I ignored it at first but it seems to be getting worse and more widespread as time goes on.

Do you think this could be caused by mdadm? It reports that all is fine via 'cat /process/mdstat' but I wouldn't know where to look or what to look for if there were syncing issues. The other possibility is that I have iTunes set to keep my music folder organized for me, but I've never heard of it actually corrupting the files it shuffles around. The bottom line is that my library is getting crappier as time goes on and I cannot stand for that!

General :: Sync "working" Dir With All Computers

Mar 29, 2010

Is it possible to have a folder that is stored on my server mounted via smb etc, that copies over any file that has been updated on my machine? I believe I'll prob have to learn some scripting to accomplish this, but here is what I want to do.

I have three computers, a laptop for school, a desktop at home and a server box sitting around for hosting files (I have access to this from anywhere). I have a folder for all of my school work, we'll call it "school". This folder is present on my laptop and desktop. Sometimes I work on my laptop at school and have new files created / updated. Other times, I work on my desktop and alter files / create new ones there. What I was thinking was using my file server as a repository. After I am finished working on one machine, I want to upload all the new files/folders to the server, so that when I work on the other machine, I can run a quick "fetch files" and being to work off of where I left of. That way, I don't have to copy files over via email or my network. Also, it's very helpful to have the updated files always stored on my server because sometimes I need to grab a file but don't have access to any of my computers.

Ubuntu One :: Uploading Files/sync Files Doesn't Work

But I have to do so by: clicking 'ubuntu one' in top bar, and click 'account' in prompt that appears. Shouldn't log in take place automatically? Being logged in I'm able to make new folders. And appearently able to enter them (they are empty I quess) If I try to upload a file clicking 'upload file' in ubuntu one. A prompt appears and I choose the file to upload and click 'continue'. The prompt says "uploading" but nothing happens. If I choose a document folder and click 'mouse click right'. And then click 'sync with ubuntu one'. It prompts that it syncs the folders. But nothing happens.
