Ubuntu :: Solution For Soho Offsite Backup Server?
Apr 7, 2010
I would like to make a server in my home that could be used to backup old job files at a print shop that I work at, creating a low cost offsite backup for our backup server. It would only backup 30-200mb a night, depending on what size the various jobs are.
There are 4 workstations that backup to a network share hosted on a fileserver(tower). It only has a single TB drive, and now people are offloading files to this server to free there computer of disk space. This is going to be a problem once the "server" disk fails. The managment there will not pay a monthly fee for 500+GB of files we prob will never need, but cant delete. I was hoping I could create some sort of "online" backup hosted at my house. ( like amazon, carbonite but without the fancy gui)
After researching a while I can't seem to come up with a great solution (partly due to my lack of networking knowledge i'm sure!). I have a pfSense router, with VPN capabilities, and the router at work (Cisco/Linksys RVS4000) also can VPN. I would like to use linux as the server, I am in the process of learning Ubuntu. Also freeNAS via FTP is another thought, might be easier?
looking for a bit of assistance from those that know. i would like to setup an offsite backup server preferably using my current ubuntu 10.10 server.i would like something that has a client that can be used on windows PC's and that is managed so i can controll bandwidth and storage space.it will only be used for storing important files and not full backups of machines.i thought about using something like comodo backup for the clients and just setting up and FTP server but just wonderd if people know of a better solution.
I am managing a Fedora dedicated server with Plesk 9 and just recently moved the email for one of the domains on the server to Google Apps for business. Unfortunately, I cannot get email messages from the website forms to deliver to addresses on this domain. For anyone familiar with Plesk, I have disabled mail in the hosting settings by un-checking the "Activate mail service on domain" checkbox and there are no accounts in the domain. (Other readings have indicated that this should be enough to allow mail to be directed to the appropriate server). My MX records correctly point to the google apps mail server.
I'm quite comfortable with command line, but I know almost nothing about the sendmail program or its alternatives and my attempts at researching how to set up this relay has been futile. I'm pretty sure I'm using sendmail and not qmail or anything else from what the red-hat style "alternatives" symlinks point to. I've also checked the /etc/mail/access, domaintable, mailertable, sendmail.cf, virtusertable, local-host-names, sendmail.cf, and submit.cf and most of these files are empty (except the .cf files), and the sendmail.cf and submit.cf make no reference to the domain in question.
Here is the output from a sendmail test that was was not received. (Private data omitted of course). sendmail -v xxx@yyy.com test email from yyy.com webserver. please ignore. xxx@yyy.com... Connecting to [127.0.0.1] via relay... 220 my.server.com ESMTP >>> EHLO my.server.com 250-my.server.com ..... Closing connection to [127.0.0.1] >>> QUIT
Performing the same test and sending an email to a non-hosted domain works fine.
I have a dual-processor x86 box with CentOS 5 Linux 2.6.18-238.19.1.el5, mysql Ver 14.12 Distrib 5.0.77, and tons of storage space. I want to run a syslog solution on this box for a SOHO infrastructure. We've got routers, switches, Windows servers, other Linux boxes, etc. I've looked at syslog-ng, but it seems rather overkill, but I like the idea of storing logs in a MySql database. Is there anything I can yum install?
If this gets moved I apologize for putting it in the wrong place...Purpose of server: RED GREEN ROUTER for SOHO or PARENTAL CONTROL Block known bad URL,IP... ie porn, malware, ads, others Block Good URL,IP if Desired by OWNER Scan mail protocols for viruses out and in if out is found log and mail MASTEROSSIBILTY??? scan all protocols in and out for viruses n block log out block log and mail MASTER a server build log and possibly a step by step assist for new users.Version of ubuntu server 10.04Hardware Gateway Pentium 4 2 network cardsUse of server RED GREEN ROUTER FIREWALL that blocks site list from shalla and my own list. general use would be for SOHO or Parental controlpick language...pick it again???...country...no...country for kb...kb layout...eth0(as RED)me it...timezone...HDD choice(i used guided-use entire disk)...user...proxy if needed(not for RED GREEN ROUTER!!!)...updates(i picked auto)...LAMP,openssh, mail server ...sqlpassword...grub...done
then login as user/pass created in install run following
I have fedora 13. Is there online based automatic backup solution that satisfy these requirements.Any file that I modify or create new in /home is automatically backup online and also encrypted on regular intervals such as 5 times a day. The backup system only uploads what was changed and not the whole file again. Any other folders that I specify are backed up in the same way as /home. /home also contains disk images of virtual operating systems. When I startup those VM and create or edit some files within VM, these should also become part of the online backup. Since these disk images are typically 20 GB in size so the online backup simply cannot upload the whole disk image over the wire on a regular basis.
I have a good grasp on windows server 2003 but I don?t want to pay outrageous license fees for software and services and clients. I am newish to terminal as I only know a few commands. I have no problem installing services for the server edition for 10.04. Its just understanding whats going wrong to troubleshoot. I guess there is you guys and I have good working knowledge of Cisco's IOS's so I understand things like routing tables and interfaces and such for troubleshooting.
Questions I have... Can I install the desktop version of 10.04 and just install the server services? I was looking at the server guide [URL] and would like to know if these can all be installed on the desktop edition without too much trouble. I would imagine one could just use the server edition but I would really want a graphical user environment for some of the activities, if not all that I can. This would be becuase on my skills in the CLI. I priced out a server from Dell. I fits my budget perfectly if I go the Ubuntu 10.04 route. I was wondering if anyone sees any conflicts with the hardware for the Ubuntu OS....
Can anybody please suggest a backup-image solution for Fedora 14?I made some tests with Clonezilla: it works fine but, please correct if I am wrong, it requires booting from a Clonezilla CD and cannot be used to take an image backup while the computer is running.
I need to install a backup server in my work environment. We have a Windows 2008 server and an old DELL PowerEdge 1750 server that has no OS on it yet.I would like to install Fedora on it and then backup the Windows Server data on the Fedora server using rsync or something else to do the backups.Do you think it's a good idea ? If not what would you use to backup the Windows server data, preferably on a linux system.
As I checked some online backup solutions I have found information that all of this which I checked have only clients for Win or Mac. But I'm looking for solution with Linux client. As I have read some info on one of the Googled page Linux probably is ready for being an online backup solution as is.So my idea is to create automatic (in the background) backup of my files (photos and docs) with my outside hosting server. I have unlimited shared hosting server with ftp access. Is there any option to built such solution to make backup synchronisation between my Linux comp and shared hosting? What should I get to know to start with such option?
I'm running Debian Squeeze on my laptop and have a large usb drive to do backups to. Any recommendations on a good backup software? I know I can do tar or rsync but I'm hoping to have a bit more complete option that keeps permissions/symlinks/etc in case a restore is needed.
i'm searching for an encrypted backup solution for dial-up users. I'm already using duply (duplicity), but it's not really the right software for a large backup and a slow connection. Every x month a new full backup is needed, and that's really slow.Is there better system for that? A file based encrypted system would be nice, so it's not needed to reupload every large file.
I'm looking for a backup solution for multiple web applications that exist in code (flat files) and an associated mysql database. I'd like the code backups to be grouped with the DB backups by name/location. I'd also like redundancy, with backups going to a local drive and a remote network drive.I'm just about done writing a bash script that does a combination of tar/gz and mysqldump per application. Once it's done, I'll throw it in a cron job, and enable/disable sites by name in the script. Before I go further down this path, does anyone recommend a solid package that already exists?
I am looking for a home back up solution. Here are the requirements Free Capability of a Full Backup at the beginning of every month Capability of either differential or incremental backups nightly Server/Client setup Must work on both Windows and Linux Need to be able to setup Policies/Backup sets Must have logging
I wouldn't mind if it supported duplication, but it is not something I need at the moment.
I would be nice if I could find a free solution similar to Symantec Netbackup.
Is there an open-source multi-tenant backup solution so I can set up a backup-server somewhere in a data centre and let multiple customers make use of it..So they have there own space and can control there own documents.
I am looking for the best solution for backup, I want to backup the /home/user.I know about rdiff, and rsync but is there a better solution for backup these folder. And the security must be good, The backup I want to make is from a server to a server in a datacenter. Both servers are running on UBUNTU 9.10.
There are a lot of backup solutions, many scripts based of rsync. The problem is not a lot of them encrypt your data before syncing it. I have a USB hard drive and I want to backup my user folder /home/myuser/ to the external drive What software will allow me to create incremental backups which are encrypted with relative ease
I am mainly a Windows admin, but I do *NIX administration from time to time, for now I need to use an open source solution for backup windows environment mainly, I spent last days playing with bacula and backupPC, and I then chose backupPC, I built a solution with it seems working not bad, but before i go on deeper, I thought asking geeks here better, my main experience with back was with Vertias/Symantec Backup Exec, what do you recommend as most similar backup solution in Ubuntu offer a close level (I don't backup to tapes I back to hard disks), also a gui is preferred, while backupPC do a nice work and i handled its client config file (machine_name.pl), but I still do mistakes sometimes and troubleshooting is annoying, I have to backup files from users machines some of these files are running (like PST files), and I could need to backup a database or something from time to time. so whats your opinion all?
Looking for a few pointers here.I am trying to automate the adding and removal of two external usb disks to my linux raid mirror (md) that I use for an offsite copy of my data. This is what I currently do.Server has 2 x 500 gb internal disks setup with linux raid 1. (md)I connect 1 of the external usb disks, add it as a secondary mirror to the main array. After it rebuilds, I remove it from the array and take it home.I have two of these external drives so one of them is always offsite, and the other is either being rebuilt, or connected as a secondary mirror. At the moment, this involves running commands manually. I cannot seem to figure out how to automatically add these disks from and to the array with a script. It seems that every time it rebuilds on the external disk, it gives it a new UUID.
Does anyone know of any decent enterprise level backup solutions for Linux? I need to backup a few servers and a bunch of desktops onto one backup server. Using rsync/tar.gz won't cut it. I need like bi-monthly full HDD backups, and things such as that, with a nice GUI interface to add/remove systems from the backup list. I need basically something similar to CommVault or Veritas. Veritas I've used before but it has its issues, such as leaving 30GB cache files. CommVault, I have no idea how much it is, and if it supports backing up to a hard drive rather than tape.
I bought a network printer, gave it a host name, address should be assigned by my cable or DSL router. Thats what DHCP and DNS is made for right? Now I will print to that printer from my (Lucid) Kubuntu box and resolve it by it's hostname.I can't ping it by printername, I can't ping it by printername.local.It works when I login my router, read out the IP address and hostname the printer registered at the routers DHCP-table and use that address. What can be done that a router transfers the hostnames it has in it's IP-table to clients upon DHCP resolve AND whenever a client get's a new IP-Address?
I'm trying to establish NFS mounts for my SOHO NAS 500 as I used to with other versions of OpenSuse. I go to Yast, I find my SOHO server and my exported directory. I put rw for options and Add it to the list. When I exit I get the following from Yast in a pop up: YaST got signal 11 at YCP file Service.ycp:77/sbin/yast2: line 399: 13095 Segmentation fault $ybindir/y2base $module "$@" "$SELECTED_GUI" $Y2_GEOMETRY $Y2UI_ARGS I am not an expert (rather basic knowledge) but this is really cryptic for me. Anyone knows what it is? Of course my mount doesn't work. My newly established system is working fine with 11.3 OpenSuse.
i do love to learn this stuff so i thing I'll give it a shot as far as setting mail, ftp, and other services i think i can manage. what i really has no clue of with where to begin is how to make this: there are foot computers, 2 of them need to access the net and 2 should not. of course, all of the PC's should be able to talk to the main server (the ftp, mail , file sharing server)so, where is my starting point?
I have got different clients with different SOHO routers on sites (Netgear , Linksys, SnapGear, etc.) All those clients use VPN IPSec . As you know that those routers has many entries :
Tunnel name key lifetime Preshared Secret Phase 1 proposal Phase 2 Proposal etc.
I am trying to familiarize myself to use different VPN clients (a piece of software ), that will be installed on clients, laptops to access their work network from home. I came across a problem with Cisco VPN client V5.0.06 I could not find all the above entries. I know Cisco devices are proprietary, does that mean cisco vpn client is not compatible with those router?
I'd like to set up my Linux box so that I can access its GUI applications from an older Mac laptop running OS X 10.5 on the local LAN and away from home (over the internet).I know the traditional way to do this is with an X session (& Mac OS X has an X window client included), but does this offer the best performance, especially over the internet? Would I be better to install some sort of RDP server? I've used VNC in the past, but performance has been pretty slow and ideally I'd like the remote apps to show up seamlessly (more efficient use of screen real estate).
I have installed a linux server in my office to run 16 machines. Its main use will be a internal mail server but will be also running websites.
I have installed Ubuntu 9.10 server x64 and have got apache running.
I am looking for the simplest more robust solution for smtp, pop3 and imap. I have only ever used qmail before and found it a pain to configure and its getting old so I though I should probably try something new. I have not much experience with running pop3 or imap on linux so would love a suggestion on that.
I have a server in a corporate data center for a project. I have an SSH access to this machine at port 22.There are some virtual machines running on this server and then at the back of every thing many other Operating systems are working. Now Since I am behind the data centers firewall my supervisor asked me if I can do some thing by which I can give many people on Internet access to these virtual machines directly. I know if I were allowed to get traffic on port other than 22 then I can do a port forwarding. But since I am not allowed this so what can be a solution in this case.
The people who would like to connect might be complete idiots.Who may be happy just by opening putty at their machines or may be even filezilla.I have configured an Apache Reverse Proxy for redirecting the Internet traffic to the virtual machines on these hosts. But I am not clear as for SSH what can I do.So is there some thing equivalent to an Apache Reverse Proxy which can do similar work for SSH in this situation.I do not have firewall in my hands or any port other than 22 open and in fact even if I request they wont allow to open.2 times SSH is not some thing that my supervisor wants.
