Ubuntu :: Netbook Version 10.04 - Internet Is Very Slow - Even More Some Videos
May 22, 2010im using the netbook last version on my Acer One D250. But i have some issues with internet. It doesnt matter how i get connected, internet is very slow, even more some videos. i let videos charge at 100% and then reproduce them, but still slower. also, some video pages dont charge on Mozilla firefox.

Feb 27, 2011I've got an annoying problem with refresh rates in everything to do with videos. Basically, anything that requires a quicker refresh than using a word processor. This includes flash movies on a website to playing an offline video. In website flash, the video tends to, well flash on occasion. The other sort of thing is pan lines or whatever they're called in videos like a simple .avi movie.
I currently have the nVidia 270.29 drivers installed for my GTS450 card, but this was happening with older versions. My monitor is a Samsung SyncMaster 943 which is detected. The resolution and refresh rates are sort of fixed on auto configuration. What I mean is, is that I can use the drop down menu to change the resolution to a manual option, and then it allows me to select a refresh rate, but only limited to 60 and 75Hz.
This setting will stay as is until I need reboot or restart Ubuntu. Even clicking on Save to X Configuration File is not a keeper. However, here's another problem. Doesn't matter which refresh rate is selected, I still get the above problems. The same resolution and refresh rate yields no problem under Win7 which I've dual-booted with.
Ubuntu :: Flash Videos Slow - Gets Choppy When In Full Screen
Mar 24, 2010Running ubuntu 9.10 on an hp pavilion 2000 laptop, with 2.5GB of ram and a dual core (i think). Works at perfect speed with everything, except when I'm tyring to watch a flash video which slows everything down and gets choppy, especially when in full screen. From looking around online I see some people blaming adobe and some people blaming NVidia drivers. Get the impression the problem is a bit of both.
Funny thing is it worked a lot better with the drivers that installed automatically with the ubuntu install, soon as I put the updated nvidia drivers on it started screwing up. how I go back to those default drivers? Tried unchecking the drivers listed in Hardware Drivers, but when I restarted was stuck in very low resolution, so I'm guessing that's not the same as the drivers used after installing the OS.
Ubuntu Multimedia :: MPlayer Playing Videos On Slow Computer - Getting Blue Screen
Jan 21, 2011-Ubuntu 10.04 with MPlayer/Smplayer & VLC installed via the repos. -Installed the Ubuntu Restricted Extras package (everything except flash, extra fonts, & java) & w32codec packgae (medibuntu). -Computer in question is 800mhz Celeron, 256MB RAM & one of those basic Intel Integrated Graphics Chip. I'm having problems playing some video files. When trying to play these files with Smplayer, I get a blue screen but can still hear audio (default video output). After switching the video output to x11(slow), I can now see the picture but it's not playable (some video will show maybe one frame every 2 seconds, some video would play for half-a-second then just freeze). This happens mainly with large files (not 100% accurate, but in general files over 300MB).
Mplayer log gives the "Your system is too slow to play this file" & "Bad alloc:insufficient resources" messages. So I'm guessing this is not a codec problem, but a system resources problem? Is there any option, trick, tweaks, etc. I can use to play these problematic files or is it just not possible because of my system specifications? Is there a way I could tell mplayer to play these files with lower bitrates & resolution? Maybe this could reduce the resources needed to play?

May 2, 2010I'm having issues playing HD videos ( some with 720p level, much more apparent with 1080p level one) The video appears to slow then becomes choppy, becoming de synced from the audio that carries on as normal. This occurs with both VLC player and XBMC, though the latter is better. My specs: Fedora 12 3.2 Ghz P4 processor 1Gig ram Radeon 9800 xt gfx card (I couldn't get the 9.3 ati driver to work)

Jun 19, 2011I would like to kindly ask you for some advice. Allmost a month I am experiencing strange behaviour of the system. I use Debian Wheezy 64bit on Intel Core i3 processor, SSD hadr drive, 4GB ram. Problem is, that sometimes the system becomes very slow when booting kernel, the kernel booting stops for 5-8 seconds on something (timimng, Processor initialization or something related, but not always the same thing) and then the system is booting noticeable slower than usual and when in the graphic environment (I use gnome) everything seems to be slower than usual, the typing in console is slow with lags and videos (movies) are not watchable due to freezes and lags.
I was trying to figure out what is causing it, the only thing I came up with is, that when I wait 10-15 sec in grub menu before selecting the kernel and after some time I manualy hit enter, it usualy boots fast and with no additional issues in the system. Sometimes it boots up normally even without this longer waiting time, but sometimes not. It is strange.

May 3, 2010I'm an Ubuntu user since Jaunty, and I've always upgraded my system (NOT fresh install). Everything went fine, but yesterday I upgraded to Lucid. My only concern -for now- deals with startup time. I'm a desktop user (Core2@3GHz) so I think I should boot in less than 10 seconds. Anyway, boot time is 30 seconds - not too much, but there is definetly something wrong with tools I don't know (ureadahead, plymouth, etc.). Attached is my bootchart: can anyone explain me what's wrong?
Also, I don't even see a plymouth Ubuntu themed bootsplash: I only see a blank (black) screen standing for seconds, then I see the bootsplash for less then half a second, then GDM appears :S Not crucial -I know- but how can I fix it? (I don't know if it's related, but I can see the animation at shutdown)Finally, GNOME desktop takes too long to load. I don't know why, but there are 15/30 seconds in between login sound and a usable desktop (with panels and icons, I mean).Please help me, I don't want to do a fresh install. Boot speed is not a dial with desktops - I know - but it can be a symptom that my system is a bit a messy (and I don't like it, since I installed Jaunty less then 1 year ago). (!Forgot! Apr 17, 2011Whenever I transfer a movie into my 16GB USB flash disk, my whole system becomes windows-like and unusable!
When i drag the file(s) into the USB disk folder, it starts out fine and pretty darn fast (25mb/sec) then slowly decreases until it's unbearably slow (3m/sec) and as a side effect my whole system starts deteriorating. I basically have to wait for the file to finish transferring before i can use my desktop again!
This has been happening with every version since Karmic (all 64bit)- I put up with it because I don't use the USB stick that much.. but lately it's been my go to source for transfering large files to/from work.

Jan 11, 2010I have good experience in microsoft enviroment, now tiring to use linux, i tried Ubuntu 9.10, OpenSuse on different computers bur there is same big problem: Very slow download speed compared to microsoft.same file at same time downloaded by microsoft winxp toke incomparable short time. for example file 5.5MB attached to e-mail on Yahoo toke ~1minute to download on winxp computer,same file at same computer but with Ubuntu takes more thane 30minutes!

It'll probably want some plugins when you initially try to encode a video to mv4. I cannot remember for the life of me which plugin I used, some gstreamer plugins and one of them was an "extra". Anyways, I got pissed off when I found out libfaac and libfaad got canned but was determined to make this work.

Ubuntu :: No Audio On Videos / Get That?
Apr 30, 2011Here is my problem. Just installed Ubuntu 10.04 with Rivendell radio automation software built in (RRAbuntu). I installed it on an older machine, an HP XT919 (I know it's a bit older, but everything runs fine EXCEPT)...No audio. Audio was fine when I ran the live CD. I first installed Ubuntu 9.04 and had audio, but it kept locking up. I then installed 10.04 with Rivendell. No audio on CD's, no audio on Videos, nothing. I already ran terminal and raised all the levels in alsamixer. What else may be the problem?

Feb 22, 2009I have XP and Ubuntu on my computer, and the only thing that keeps me using Windows is that I need to view streaming WMV videos for school. I use windows media player for this almost every day, and I also use the play speed settings to speed up the videos to 1.5x.
I tried watching the videos in Ubuntu using VLC, but I keep having trouble navigating through the video, and even pausing and restarting doesn't seem to work right. Is there a program that will do this reliably, or is there a way to get WMP running in ubuntu? I would love to get rid of windows, but all of my lectures are streamed solely in WMV, and I would need to get this working.

Jan 17, 2010I have just installed ubuntu on my computer and its been a real good experience until i found that it won't play my videos, do i have to download some sort of codec or plugin (even vlc won't play anything and it usually comes with the codecs pre-installed) i know linux can play my videos i have had them working with my pclinuxos desktop why not ubuntu. i'm using ubuntu 9.04.

Apr 4, 2010I cannot get AVI videos to play with the Totem movie player that comes bundled with Ubuntu 8.04 on the Dell Mini 9. I keep getting: "Could not determine type of stream." Randomly, one or two of the dozen or so videos on my SD card will work, but most will not. This is very frustrating because all the videos I download are always in AVI format.
I tried used the synaptic package manager find an alternative player and tried MPlayer, but that didn't do anything. I'd just get a blank screen on everything. Using the tutorial in this forum, I got GNOME Mplayer, which also didn't work, but even a video that worked with Totem would only play audio with GNOME Mplayer.
I looked in the repository for video codec updates but didn't see any. What do I do? Is there like a Winamp for Linux? This is a total bummer. I just want to play AVI files that are so commonly used for video.

Apr 14, 2010I'm trying to find a program where I can edit some hd mkv files. I want to cut pieces of them out and put them together. I was using avidemux but when I went to save it again it said I needed the start point to be a keyframe. It allowed me to save it as an avi, but the color was distorted. I am fine with using avidemux if I can get around this keyframe problem.
