Ubuntu :: Setting Custom Default Applications In 11.04?
Apr 30, 2011
I'm trying to set the default apps using gnome-default-applications-properties. In previous versions I was able to set custom apps for everything. Looks like Gnome3/Ubuntu 11.04 doesn't let me do that for, say, the mail reader. I'm one of those people who still use Alpine, and in previous versions I was able to set the default to run an xterm (well, aterm) which auto-ran alpine.
This version, looks like that's not there. I'm wondering if there's a way to set that anyway. like registering a script I write as a "mail client" so it's available in the chooser. Second... and almost MORE annoying... the "Terminal Emulator" default app DOES have a custom option. But it also recognises that I have aterm installed, which I want to use as the default app... however, since it has an aterm option, it won't let me enter aterm as a default command. Which I want to do because I want to modify the commandline options. But if you choose "Custom" and type "aterm" into the Command field... it ERASES your commandline options and puts it's default sterm options in!
I have already had Vista installed on another drive and from what i've read on the webs you get to dualboot if you install ubuntu after vista. when i did install it (i installed on a blank hdd with no partitions, choosing the "erase entire disk" option since for some reason default option was attempting to eat a part of my windows 1 gb drive instead of using disk i specially made for it) and the grub 2 loaded for the first time, there was NO option to run vista. only 2 linux (normal and recovery) and 2 memtests. I've ran linux and went to google this. I found that i should add something to some config files in /etc/grub.d/From reading the readme file i understood i could add my own files that are named like NUMBER_SOMENAME and insert code into them. Because it said:Quote: For example, you can add an entry to boot another OS as01_otheros, 11_otheros, etc, depending on the position you want it to occupy inthe menu; and then adjust the default setting via /etc/default/grub. But then i found a file 40_custom that said:
i am trying to set some custom keyboard shortcuts using compiz in the commands section...but it is not working. For example , i want to use kaffeine and i am using as command the word kaffeine. When i use it in the custom commpand of compiz it is not working at all. Just to be sure that the command is indeed "kaffeine" i execute it via terminal using the word "kaffeine" and it is executed normaly. I am 100% sure that the command is only for terminal use and as general launcher. The same behavior is observed for other applications. The strange thing is that when i want to put a custom keyboard shortcut in compiz for a python script then the command "python xxx.py" is working!
I use a dark theme in gnome, which of course doesn't display correctly on many websites that force a white background onto text input dialogues (I have to type white or light gray on white) - Because of this, I never use a dark theme for more than a few days before I switch back to light, which really sucks - My workaround for this was going to be changing my Firefox launcher so that a custom GTKRC is used.
It works for all applications except for Firefox.
e.g. if I type into a Terminal:
Code: env GTK2_RC_FILES="/usr/share/themes/Redmond/gtk-2.0/gtkrc" speedcrunch or Code: bash -c 'GTK2_RC_FILES=/usr/share/themes/Redmond/gtk-2.0/gtkrc speedcrunch'
I have ubuntu 10.10 installed on my computer in dual boot with windows 7, but i am using a 27-inches Samsung screen through an hdmi cable to connect my computer. whenever i try getting on ubuntu, i cannot see the top and bottom of the desktop (so i cant access the menu bar or anything!)(while using my spare vga cable) i tried downloading the nvidia driver & utility for my video card (gtx 460), but even using that, i could not setup my screen resolution manually. When i setup my windows, i was able to manually setup a custom resolution (i.e. 1842x1026) through the nvidia utility to be able to get the screen the fit properly.
I was wondering if there is any way i could do the same for ubuntu, perhaps through terminal.
Basically the computer will have to do nothing other than run some custom software that interfaces with the vehicle's systems via a USB FDTI board and render to an 8" touch screen via OpenGL. User input will be via the said touchscreen, and audio output will eventually come into the equation. The target vehicle(s) will be extensively modified for the project, and I'm hoping the software will eventually override features such as the immobiliser, so an extremely fast boot time will be essential.
I have one of those Via C7 fully integrated mini ITX motherboards, much of the onboard hardware will be useless besides two USB ports and a SATA port, so could be completely removed from the kernel if necessary to achieve a fast boot. If some BIOS hacking is required I'd happily look at that too. I'm a recently graduated software engineer, and can comfortably use Linux (I'm using openSUSE for developing the software) but don't have a clue where to start with the OS; if I should be downloading and modifying an existing distro or trying to build one from scratch somehow?
I have a custom PS1 that I would like to use for my user account however when I view my users .bashrc file, there is no line entry there for 'PS1='. Can someone please tell me if I have my own custom user PS1 line entry, where do I place it so I can have some extra function and colors in my RHEL 5 system.
I am using the elementary gtk theme, but I wanted to have my gnome-panel have a set custom background, so I went into the 'gtkrc' and commented out "#include "Apps/panel.rc"". This worked perfectly but, the right click menus and drop down menus changed color which conflict with the icons that I am using.
I'm having difficulty setting custom ls colors in xterm. If I understand it right one can edit the system-wide file located in /etc/DIR_COLORS to modify every terminal or customize xterm; I chose xterm mostly because the other terminals I never use. Here is my .bash_profile and .bashrc respectively: if [ -f ~/.bashrc ]; then source ~/.bashrc fi
if [ -f /etc/bashrc ]; then source /etc/bashrc fi
alias ls='ls --color -F' PS1='[e[1;32m][u@h:w]$[e[0m] '
When I use the login shell, the colors are different than xterm in that they are not as bright; furthermore, I marked out bold fonts in .Xresources: !xterm colors xterm*foreground: #d3d3d3 xterm*background: #000000 xterm*boldColors: false xterm*cursorBlink: true xterm*cursorColor: white xterm*loginShell: false xterm*faceName: Liberation Mono xterm*faceSize: 10
So, there must be a file around somewhere that is changing the colors between the interactive and login shells. Also, man xterm: color6 (class Color6) color7 (class Color7)
These specify the colors for the ISO-6429 extension. The defaults are, respectively, black, red3, green3, yellow3, a customizable dark blue, magenta3, cyan3 and gray90. The default shades of color are chosen to allow the colors 8-15 to be used as brighter versions. How does that get anyone anywhere with setting the color? It doesn't say what color (class) is assigned to which file specifically, thus adhering to the distribution-wide color codes. Perhaps I am making this more difficult than it should be.
I installed freenx on my desktop and decided to set up a custom key following this tutorial: [URL]
Code: sudo dpkg-reconfigure freenx-server
Here I chose 'Create new custom keys' and SSH. After copying the client.id_dsa.key file to my laptop, I was able to log in no problem. However, I decided to check and used another computer (running qtnx as a client) to attempt a login with the default key.
It still worked.
Have I missed something in the fine print here? If not, is there a way to fix this behavior?
I installed Fedora 11 on a server with 2 equal sized disks. I used the gui installer and didn't make custom setting changes to the partitions. One of the steps asked for me to choose the disks i wanted to use for this installation. I selected both disks and after the installation Fedora only sees one volume the size of both disks combined.Do I now have software raid0 or do I have something else?
I dont know were to begin to solve my problem and I have been googling for hours to get a hint without any success. I'm runnning a Counterstrike Server on my virtual openSuse server - I'm exploring so don't justify what I am hosting at the moment
I want to make it possible to gain access to the cstrike folde via a ftp login. But I really have no idea were to start. The server is also a webserver, where I can ass FTP accounts for my apache vhosts via plesk - but I dont think this is the solution of my problem, isn't it?
I've just built gcc 4.6.0 by myself since there is no update in Mandriva yet and I really needed the updated version, but I must be missing something in its configuration. I added ~/apps/gcc460/bin in front of my PATH, and the lib dir to my LD_LIBRARY_PATH in my .bash_profile, like so:
I still have gcc 4.4.2 installed, but it's now hidden, so gcc --version correctly yields 4.6.0. I finally tried to build my project, all went fine, but at the moment of running it I get: Code: ./EugGame.Release.Linux: /usr/lib64/libstdc++.so.6: version `GLIBCXX_3.4.15' not found (required by ./EugGame.Release.Linux)
I assume the correct version is the one located in ~/apps/gcc460/lib, but how do I make my project load the correct lib? Is it possible at all to have two versions of gcc on the same machine? I just found that I should've added lib64 to my LD_LIBRARY_PATH instead of lib. Anyways, even if the problem is solved, I'd like to hear if my configuration is well made or if I should leave LD_LIBRARY_PATH unset and use some other way to override the default search path for stdlib.
My question is about TCP parameters in Linux. By now, I want to change the default values of:
Initial Timeout ACK Delay Idle Connection Timeout
I have a Linux Box with kernel 2.6.x and 2 ethernet interfaces. I know TCP is a stack that doesn't have anything to do with ethernet devices. Said that, the question: is there a way to set custom values for each interface? For example, a server listening to connections in eth0 would use one value for Idle Connection Timeout and another server listening to connections in eth1 could use a different value for that parameter.
I have two applications that I would like to always open up in Workspace 2, even when i restart my computer. Is there a GUI solution that can do this? One of the apps is the Sound Preference window I would like set to open with the input tab selected.
While recently tweaking my system i deleted some startup applications from System->Preferences->Startup Applications. Now my themes and some other settings are not showing up while I login.
here the default set of startup application entries that come when you do a clean install? I am using Ubuntu 9.10 64bit
I need to set up a Radius server for use in an ISP which will be wireless internet only.
I had thought to use Centos maybe and install and somehow configure Freeradius.
I have little experience with Linux, but am a Windows Admin, and use Linux a little.
My questions would be: Is there a best distro that i should use?? I have used Ubuntu the most, but not sure if it is best to use for this project.
Freeradius website has documentation but it doesnt tell me much about how to get it all up and running, What we want is Authentication and Accounting and from what i can see Freeradius is a good option? Is there anything better that i can use? We will be eventually having approximately 5000 clients.
I'm using Lubuntu and I cant figure out how to change the default applications used.
I have (Preferences -> Preferred Applications) in the menu and that lets me set Web Browser and Mail client. I have that set to Chromium, however any links I click open in Opera. I want these to open in Chromium, but I'm not sure how to set that.
I have tried to make my own buntu running LXDE as the desktop environment though it is running smoothly on an old laptop it has a certain problem.
I have installed PCMan File Manager as the default file manager for the LXDE and not Thunar or Dolphin, but, I have a problem with opening files from there. The default application set to open all file types is the Terminal.
What I currently do to open the file is right click and choose "Open with.." to open the file in the appropriate application. Is there a way to set the default applications?
I have Ubuntu 9.10 from minimal CD install then got LXDE and installed the following applications aside from the applications that came with LXDE:
-OpenOffice.org suite -Mozilla Firefox -Google Picasa -Wine -VLC Player
I downloaded emacs, but when I run it in terminal, it does not open the gui - it opens emacs in the terminal and I do not want that. Also, kate just doesn't launch and a bunch of error appears. What do I need to do to launch the applications on GUI by default?
I have the problem that Fedora doesn't save my default applications. When I change it, it does work for some time, but when I reboot it's all gone. So every time I open Chrome I have to select "Make default browser" (very annoying). It doesn't save the default settings for specific extensions neither. For example when I open a .exe file it always open with Archive Manager now while I have selected Wine as default program for that.
Is there a way to change the default theme/gui for SquirrelMail to something newer and more fresh ? I really like the gui on RoundCube, but SquirrelMail has been here longer and has more features, but I will use RoundCube if I can't change it(end users will be more satisfied if it looks better).
I am on Archlinux x86_64 with Gnome 2.3...Somehow, my default applications got all messed up. On a new user account, when I try and open a file from Chromium, or even the places menu under gnome (a folder), it asks me what to open it with. It then uses this for EVERYTHING. For example, on my real account, everything is opening with soffice (LibreOffice), including folders from the Places menu - as well as all files from within chromium.
I'm using ubuntu and i need to know if it is possible to make a "prototype" account that sets the defaults for new users when a new account is made. How would i go about doing this. I would like to have the same start up programs, panel, themes, background, etc...
I recently installed VLC Media Player and now wonder how I could make it my default media player in Ubuntu because every time I want to listen to a song, I have to right click and "Open With...VLC Media Player".
[URL] my desktop accidently become like this: Screenshot-1.png i can't find the favourites, internet, system, etc to start the application...what should i do to return the desktop with default setting..
I'm trying to configure GRUB to boot XP preferentially- my wife insists. Having looked up the GRUB manual I see that I can set this using the default command.
The problem is, when I go to my grub command line default is not a recognized command. If I hit TAB for a list of commands, it isn't there.
I think I'm using some 0.9x version of GRUB, since the partitions etc seem to be numbered starting at 0, not 1.
While I'm at it, I was just going to play around and figure this out, but: the menu interface lists five versions of Ubuntu (all those weird kernel variations) then XP. So would XP be default 1 or default 5?
