Apr 30, 2011Topic says it. Postfix was receiving emails just fine on 10.10, did the upgrade, now every host is unkown...even though I can dig -x from the machine and resolve.

I've tried removing and re-installing proftpd, but this doesn't help
If I comment line 18 in modules.conf, I just get permission denied on the next LoadModule command...
Can I remove all modules? or is there a way of fixing the permission denied issue?

The problem: Apr 27 17:29:21 mxkasib dovecot: lda: Error: userdb lookup: connect(/var/run/dovecot/auth-userdb) failed: Permission denied (euid=8(mail) egid=12(mail) missing +w perm: /var/run/dovecot/auth-userdb, euid is not dir owner)
Obviously, dovecot-lda, instanced by postfix, couldn't access the auth-userdb file because of permission. There are plenty of topics over the internet, the problem is really simple. Except for I've got all the permissions needed, or it seems to me so and I'm missing something. Here is some additional information:

Fedora :: Root File Permission Accidentally Changed Root To 700
Mar 24, 2010the terminal and logged in as root i was changing file permissions and happened to change the root folder to 700. Now my icons have gone and i can't even access the terminal.
I was just wondering if it is possible to go to rescue mode using the cd and restore all the appropriate file permissions to root/ users if possible

May 10, 2010I just upgraded to ubuntu 10.04 via the alternate cd ISO image. I can log in to Ubuntu with my old password but sometimes, when i have to grant extra privileges, that same password doesn't work. I also get a small message saying the pass word I use to loging and the one used for 'keyring' are different. what's wrong? Is there any way I can correct this?

Oct 16, 2010Before the update my computer was named "joe-laptop", (i think it was the host name is what its called, that was named "joe-laptop". Along with that, on my KDE session/desktop (I installed Ubuntu, but later got the kubuntu desktop packages) I had the gnomes network manager used instead of KDEs (kdes network manager was giving me problems, I would type the password in for my wifi router, then it would stall, then ask again as if its ignoring the password. but thats not important so im not gonna get into that whole part (at least yet)).
When i upgraded from ubuntu 10.04 to 10.10 the login screen said "localhost.localdomain" rather than "joe-laptop", and in the terminal it says "joe@localhost", rather than "joe@joe-laptop", along with that it kicked KDEs network manager back into use on the kde desktop, which means I can't access the internet on kde now.
I'm trying to fix the network manager part myself, but if I can't get that Ill post in this thread or edit this post. I was able to previously get gnomes network manager to load over it so I'm sure I'll hit it again.
I figured out the problem, it turns out that the name problem was that it deleted the /etc/hosts file, so i just copied the older hosts I backed up a month or so ago and slapped it in there and it worked perfect.
As for getting the gnome network manager, it must not be compatible with the qtcurve gtk theme, cause I switched it the gtk theme to a newer one, then loaded back up nm-applet and bam it came up there!

Feb 23, 2010I have a recently setup my first linux server (hardy) and am having problems with the permissions for a log file being changed. I believe this is caused by syslogd, but am not sure how to correct it. Bacula will report it is unable to start a backup because it is unable to open the log file (/var/lib/bacula/log) "permission denied". After changing the owner from syslog to bacula, the backup will resume. However, the following day I encounter the same problem because the owner of the log has been changed back to syslog.I see where the permissions for logs are altered in sysklogd, but I am not certain how to make bacula exempt or if this is the right approach.

Jan 19, 2011I have set up Ubuntu 10.04 and am running it on a VPS. I have everything the way I want it but I have encountered a problem. When I created my user, I did this:
adduser myname
that worked fine, it also assigned me to group called myname, which isn't what i wanted. so i tried to change my group to staff with the following:
sudo usermod -g staff myname
it works fine and i can verify my new group by:
groups myname
and get:
staff
but...now here come the bit I don't understand, when I make a new file/folder and then look at their ownership it is the old group (ie. myname). is this right? shouldn't the ownership of the file now be myname staff? not myname myname.
this is what i did to create a new file, while logged in under myname:
touch a
mkdir da
ls -al

Jul 5, 2011I run SSH daemon on my Fedora 15 (server). When I generate public/private key on my laptop (client) and put public key to authorized_keys on server it works excellent. But when I change IP address of laptop (change WLAN) I have problem to connect. I searched GOOGLE but I havent find any information. I also tried the same from other laptop with the same result.

If I have a sufficiently large file, say 4+ GB or so, I'm not interested in copying the whole file if only a small change has been made. Sep 13, 2010I run Samba version 3.4.7 as a Domain server for our company, and recently we reorganized our IP-addresses. And the Samba server also got a new IP-address. (192.168.1.60 -> 192.168.1.22). However, now new computers can not join the domain, and old ones can not connect to it correctly (they get a temp profile).
Windows XP gets a temp profile when connecting, and when trying to join a domain I get this error "A domain controller for the domain HAWAR3 could not be contacted. Ensure that the domain name is typed correctly. If the name is correct click Details for troubleshooting".
When trying to connect Windows2008R2 (already a member) it says:
"There are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request."
My guess is that is is some problem with WINS or something.

Feb 16, 2011I did a basic U9.10 server install of postfix with the minimal config. Added a test user and things worked after a few minutes. I now want to setup a few new things and want to switch to use mysql as the back-end. I have mysql installed, setup postfix.admin which in turn setup the database/tables. Now when I logged in to that admin, the original test user is not there (which is fine), but I created the test domain again, created a user and an outside test failed saying user unknown.
Now I looked through the main.cf page and don't see anything obvious to say hey, put backend is mysql, here is the info. I then noticed via apt that postfix-mysql was not installed, so installed that, I see my .cf was backed up, but still don't see anywhere to connect the 2. So currently mail is still accepted from the test1 user running local. I don't mind wiping everyhing, but is there a simple place to just make a change or 2?
Fedora Servers :: DYNDNS Changed Public Key - Now Scp Doesn't Work
Apr 9, 2010A week ago or so neither ssh nor scp were working when attempting to connect to my on-campus computer from home. ssh was complainig about the key not matching and I figured out I could just delete the config file it was reading the (now old) key from and let it create a new one with the updated key upon prompting me whether or not to trust the remote host.
However, even though ssh is now working, I can no longer use scp. I issued scp -v and discovered a bunch of errors. scp prompts me for the remote password and even prints the message of the day on the remote computer but then just hangs and doesn't seem to be copying any files. I'm sure the issue is with the whole key change issue but I can't quite figure out why ssh would be working just fine and scp would be failing.

I have installed ubuntu server 9.04 and want to send emails from my server for which I've configured postfix. But I dont know what to do next.
My questions are:
1. Do i need to install DNS server for using postfix? If not, what should I install to send emails from this server?
2. Do I need to forward any particular port in my router?
3. If I dont have a fully qualified domain, what are the configurations I need to do to send emails?

Mar 15, 2010I use Ubuntu Server 9.10 64bit
at first, sendmail was installed and everything was working great. all the email sent from forum and webform I host as been sent correctly in the reception box of the recipient. But I want postfix as MTA to do my delivery to all my virtual domain I host.
when sendmail is uninstalled and postfix installed and all services configured(php included) and restarted(apache included), when I send a email from command line or from web form, the email goes in junk mail for some ISP email address and for gmail and the email did'nt show at all for hotmail. but email sent from forum (phpbb) still goes in reception box like normal email do.
I tried do change the headers, who was working with sendmail, of the email sent from web form without success.
so I tried to uninstall postfix and reinstall sendmail, restarted all service and every thing was back to normal... email sent goes in reception box.
I tried it twice.... sendmail, postfix, sendmail, postfix and now back to sendmail for a working solution until I get postfix working.
I tried with spf entry in my dns, I tried allowed icmp packet from outside with iptables, I tried many different headers for my email. My ip is not blacklisted anywhere.
