Ubuntu Servers :: Intrepid Repositories Are No Longer Available
Dec 3, 2010
I know it's kind of my fault but I have this problem. I have two machines running Intrepid. I should have upgraded them in due time but what's done is done. Now I need to install some packages there but the Intrepid is no longer supported - Intrepid repositories are no longer available.

I am a long time user of Lineakd.
I just upgraded my F9 to F12 with a new install. I see that Lineakd is no longer in any of the usual repositories. Going back to another F9 system I have, based on the installed rpm, it looks like the last time it included was FC6.
I just wanted to confirm this situation, before I going looking to get Lineakd outside of the standard Fedora repositories.

I am running Ubuntu 8.04 LTS as my Samba/LDAP PDC on my network. Unfortunately, I need to get a newer version of samba than the current repositories for 8.04 provide. I need the Samba 3.4.0 that has been updated for Ubuntu 8.10 to allow Windows 7 to join domain as outlined here (I am currently running 3.0.28a I think). Is there a way to set 8.04 to use the 9.10 repositories and use apt-get to install samba 3.4.0 from them?

Is it possible to install just one program from newer repositories? Our server is Ubuntu 10.04 but I need the newer ImageMagick which is available in the 10.10 repositories. If I use these repos, and try to apt-get install imagemagick, I am prompted to install 20 or so other new programs, which I fear will mess up the system.

I have been the webmaster of a webpage for a few years and I have always installed Apache and PHP using the source code. The reason is that I wanted to use a recent version of them and I couldn't find it in the repositories.
Now, we are going to purchase a new server with Ubuntu (we were using Fedora in the previous one) and I don't know if install those packages using synaptic (much easier) or install them from scratch using the source code.
Synaptic is great, specially installing modules for PHP, but I am afraid of not having updated versions in a few months.

I need a bind-server (I mean DNS server) with a SQL backend. As far as I have seen, the only viable option I have is to recompile bind9 with support for either MySQL or PostGre.
Link to this: [URL]with an additional
Code:
apt-get install libpqxx3-dev
From some tutorials I have read, I see I need to recompile it to enable its SQL support.
But when I do it that way, I won't get any security updates, won't I?
So... Is there any bind server with SQL support in the repositories ? For that I don't have to worry about security updates...

I have Ubuntu Server 8.04 (LTS) installed and running well, but there a few packages that I'd like to upgrade, without upgrading the entire system (e.g, apache2). Is it possible to include both the Hardy (8.04) and Lucid (10.04) distributions in sources.list? Is that even safe? By the same token, can I add a Maverick repo to my list? I'm using "apache2" as an example, but this is more of a general question.
How should situations like this usually be handled, when only a select few packages would profit from an upgrade that resides in a different Ubuntu release?
On a similar note, is it possible to install two different versions of the same package using the APT tools? Let's say I want two different versions of php5 -- how would I go about doing that?

I am running Suse 11.1 64bit, with KDE, recently I received a pop up on my screen, "something about update problems", I used Yast 2 and selected online Update and it couldn't find updates for Nvidia and froze at that point. I dis-enabled that repository and refreshed all of the remaining Repositories individually and it seemed to work. I then went to the repositories listing and selected "Add" and selected "community" repositories and received the following: WARNING Unable to download list of repositories or no repositories defined. What is my problem? How do I acquire the list of community repositories? I can live with out the Nvidia repository for now but would eventually like to get it back.

I'm trying to set up a private irc server. I install ircd-ircu, modify the configuration file, restart the daemon, and everything works great. After the next server reboot, the server shows the daemon is running, but I can no longer connect to the server from my irc client. I've tried restarting the daemon with no luck. I can then uninstall and reinstall it with the same outcome. Everything works initially, but after rebooting, the irc client can't connect..

All of a sudden, I could not connect to my ubuntu 10.10 server from Windows 7 using vnc this morning. When I open vnc on windows 7 and hit connect, it goes away like its going to connect but never pops up the screen. If I try to connect to my other ubuntu server, it connects quick and I'm able to navigate in it.

i'm still on Intrepid (i know, i'm behind the times) and i've been poking around for simple-straightforward info on how to upgrade my VLC 0.9.4 to 1.x.....but everything i've found seems to assume one is already on Jaunty at least. even videolan.org has simple-straightforward info for upgrading VLC for all distros as far back as Hardy....except for Intrepid. and i'm half-tempted to just try following the steps given for those who are on Jaunty and just seeing what happens.....though i also can't help but think that it may be dangerous to do that. does it even matter at all which ubuntu version i'm on, and i'm worrying about it for nothing? xD

2011-04-11 11:57:03 UTC I don't know what happening with my centralized log-server running octopussy. Currently it is working in a vmware setup with approx 980 Mb ram and is set in bridge mode. Currently is it set to receive logs from logs devices which are 4 in number one of which includes the core isg-1000 device. This setup is still in its test form....now what happens after some time (sometimes it taken days and sometimes just hours) when the connection (https) is suddenly lost to the apache and i can no longer access the interface. What happens more strangely my Ethernet interface gets shutdown on ubuntu. I have to restart the services by issuing /etc/init.d/networking restart.
Even at times it itself start receiving network packets on its own; without even restarting; i don't what the hell is wrong with the server. I cannot understand its erratic behavior. I need a sound and reliable Ethernet connectivity at all times because coz of loss of connectivity in my case would mean loss of logging functionality. I dnt want any time-gap in logging ...as im currently logging some highly critical devices on this server.

I am running a Fedora 3 that I had installed from a slightly outdated disk. and I have been making updates by using YUM. But I have a policy of only updating just what is needed and leaving the rest alone. This was fine until some time (I think is was) last year, when our friends at fedora had discontinued support for Fedora 3 and then unwisely deleted all the packages for fedora 3 and fedora 4 off there server. Now it has been a struggle just administer updates when application that I am adding become unhappy with the version that come off of the disk, and I end up with versions that are more current then I wanted. All I wanted is to have access to the packages that were left when the music stopped.
Hear is my current pediment. I now need to run PHP (something I never used until now) and version that came with the disk (ver 4.3.9) is too low for the scripts that I will be running. They need PHP 5. Now I know that were up to something like PHP 5.3.x. But I don't really need that. I am shore there is a version of PHP 5, like versions 5.1, that was available though YUM. If they only just left it there. At least Microsoft leaves all of there window 98 updates on there server for people to use, even though they don't support windows 98 any more.
The biggest reason I want to use YUM or even up2date for my installs and updates, is they minimized the risk of screwing something up.
Here is my question. Dos, anyone know where there is a mirror of fedora 3 updates that fedora used to have on there site?
I am hopping to be able to adjust the baseurl= line in the fedora.repo file to point it to this new mirror and make YUM work like NEW.

I'm having trouble with some qt-based apps that did work previously but now do not. So far I've seen this with Skype, VLC and umbrello. Applications appear to execute but GUI never seems to initialise. CPU remains around 90%. I'm using an eeepc 1000H running ubuntu intrepid 8.10 with adam's kernel 2.6.27-8-eeepc. Any ideas on how I can debug this? As I mentioned these applications worked fine in the past, I'm guessing an update broke them.

I still use Intrepid 8.10 on one of my older machines and have tried, but in vain, to install some rar compression software from the repos. It seems as if the specified repo for 8.10 is now end of life Would anyone know of where I could download a .deb file containing an older version of rar which would install correctly on by box ?

I have an Ubuntu 10.04.1 AMD64 server running Apache with SSL. In the past, even though I have a passphrase on my key file, I have only needed it if I manually restarted Apache2, never after reboot.
I recently switched from a self-signed cert to one from a CA. I'm not sure if this is what caused it, I also installed a few packages (AWStats, PHPSysInfo and Munin) that all interact with the webserver.
Anyway, I just noticed that now after a reboot Apache starts but doesn't work. I need to kill that process and start a new one with the passphrase (maybe on the console it is prompting me, I mainly use SSH access since the server is headless).
Why did Ubuntu used to 'remember' the passphrase on the self-signed cert but now I need to provide it?
My sever auto-updates so it would be annoying to have this thing go down regularly after a patch that requires a reboot.

I'm running a cron job every night to dump a MySQL database to an external hard drive. It works, however when I check on it the following morning the external is no longer mounted and the XFS log file is corrupted. If I run
Code:
xfs_repair -L /dev/sdf1
It works, but then I get these issues:
Code:
XFS: Filesystem sdf1 has duplicate UUID - can't mount
I can reset the UUID, but it's difficult to have to do this every day.

I am suddenly not prompted for my password when I run any command as sudo on a few of my Ubuntu servers.
if I run sudo -K, the session is cleared, and I am prompted again for my password, however it saves/caches it until I run sudo -k again even if I log out and back in. I want it to prompt me for my password, as it should (and did) by default, for security.
Any ideas what could be causing this?
Here's my /etc/sudoers file code...

I decided to report what happened me lately so that someone more clever could find the hole in the latest ubuntu. So: I have a machine connected 24/7 on high speed network. i had karmic on it. i ran openssh and apache2 (without any mod, plain apache2) on it. In addition i ran firefox, ktorrent, and amule on it. Nothing else. The system didnt have any rule in iptables.
Recently chkrootkit signaled a SuckIT rootkit in the system. I was scared, i googled for it and i saw that on ubuntu this actually happened and it was a false positive. Ok, i kept going. Yesterday i nmapped myself and i found an open port around 64000 that i couldnt see with netstat -atpnl so i concluded i was actually infected and erased the drive and tried to install lucid alpha2 so, one day of lucid,
- with a firewall this time that let open only the port 22 and 80 from internet
- with only openssh as service (no apache2)
- ran firefox3.6 , ktorrent and amule , nothing else
chkrootkit didnt find anything
debsums reported
debsums: changed file /sbin/initctl (from upstart package)
i did an apt-get install --reinstall upstart and that file didnt warn anymore. So i concluded there must be some kind of vulnerability either in
a) firefox
b) ktorrent
c) amule

I wanted to know anyone's experience with the new deb package ncomputing released for Intrepid. I've used their products and fought my way through to make them work. I was able to get ncomputing to work for a short while with intrepid, but upon installing the video drivers (and rebooting) the l230 hasn't been able to connect to any other host. (With Intrepid running). I've updated the firmware but the box still refuses to connect, for awhile it would say TS error (....). The system log only showed,
Date SystemName ncltsd [6198]: ERROR: NULL == video
[18043]: ERROR: SrvCli.CreateSession () failed! (3211426, 1869984)
Any help I can get would be much appreciated. If I forgot anything of I apologize, as you probably noticed it's my first time using the forum and I have only been using Ubuntu for a little less than a year.

I would like to add Ubuntu 8.10 as a dual boot option to my Ubuntu 10.04 installation. It is not immediately obvious to me how to do so, because running the CD installation will presumably overwrite Grub2 with Grub (and might not successfully boot 10.04).
How do I install 8.10 without overwriting my Grub2, and then add 8.10 to the Grub2 menu?

I had Orca installed for absolutely no reason, and I decided to start it and try playing with the text to speech. It wasn't interesting and I closed it. Now that I've restarted the computer, in GNOME sound doesn't work for certain things (VLC, Firefox). I uninstalled Orca because it auto-started on log-in and the preferences would freeze when I tried to change them. I read about a problem in 9.10 where there is some file taht disabled pulseaudio, I don't see it and I am using 8.10 anyways. :/
EDIT: I've re-installed Orca and edited the preferences fine this time, but the sound still doesn't work for VLC and Firefox. Now I've completely uninstalled Orca from synaptic and it still doesn't work. The sound test works fine, though. I'm sure there is some configuration file Orca added something to, but I don't know how to find it.
