View 1 RepliesI've been building my digital music collection for some time and used to house it on a local drive with no quality issues. A while back I built myself a file server using ubuntu and mdadm in a raid1 configuration to protect against potential drive failure. I link my iTunes library to the music files via a samba share and everything works great on the surface. I've started to notice that random songs are becoming corrupted with pops clicks and silent pauses. I'll even re-download an album and notice that it's corrupted a few weeks later. Now I'm at a loss to what is causing this issue; I ignored it at first but it seems to be getting worse and more widespread as time goes on.
Do you think this could be caused by mdadm? It reports that all is fine via 'cat /process/mdstat' but I wouldn't know where to look or what to look for if there were syncing issues. The other possibility is that I have iTunes set to keep my music folder organized for me, but I've never heard of it actually corrupting the files it shuffles around. The bottom line is that my library is getting crappier as time goes on and I cannot stand for that!
Recently our houses internet usage has skyrocketed and i'm trying to keep an eye on it using bandwidthd (installed on the server). It installed fine and counts traffic fine, the problem is we have a server that hosts our music/movies/etc and when people pull music off the server it skews their bandwidth usage. I'm looking for a way to exclude all traffic on the local network and only count internet traffic. This is the filtering part of the config file

First let me preface this with saying that I have been googling, and trolling boards trying to find a solution, tutorials, any thing to help me what I am trying to do, all day (since 8 am, when I started work, till now 3:50 pm) and I have found little to improve my situation. My goal is to setup my desktop (running Fedora core 12) as a server that can be accessed from anywhere. I would like to be able to have streaming music (find a song, or an album, you want to listen to, click and play) from any location, any computer, and I would also like to store files and such that I could also share with whomever I give permission. I have found plenty of tutorials helping with Apache and SSH, so anything along those lines would be nice.
View 14 Replies View RelatedDoes Ubuntu Server 10.04 give me a good/easy way to upload music, photos, and videos and automatically have them available to a TiVo, a PlayStation 3, and Macs/PCs running iTunes on the network?I'd additionally like it to be able to transcode the videos into formats that the PS3 can handle.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm building a cheap htpc for my garage so I can watch the news, listen to music and browse a few car forums when needed. Here are the specs I am looking at:
2 512mb ddr2 800
AMD Athlon II X2 240 Regor 2.8GHz 2 x 1MB L2 Cache Socket AM3 65W
500GB sata2 or 32gb ssd drive
Will Ubuntu be able to use a ssd? If so this box can pull movies in from my server. Which distro will play movies, watch live tv, and play music the best on the specs I provided?
I use mt-daapd music server to stream music to a couple of network music players (which use UPnP protocols). Recently (last month or so) I have found that on restarting my ubuntu system I need to manually restart the avahi-daemon in order for the music players to be able to 'see' the music server. I think avahi-damon is running when ubuntu first starts up. The output of a ps aux shows:

I'd like to understand why I need to restart the avahi-daemon and either solve this or learn a way to automate restarting it on system boot up so I don't have to do it manually each time. My system is ubuntu 9.10 64 bit and the version of avahi-daemon is 0.6.25

I have something similar going on with my relatively old (it's core 2 duo I think) monitor-busted laptop for around a year now. But the discspace of that is only 160GB and it's somewhat a pain to always migrate the files. I'm also thinking it would be good storage of lots of big pictures as my brother is a hobbyist turned professional photographer and I am an apprentice of his. It will also be stored with lots of videos and sound files that can be accessed at least through the network.
I'm thinking of at least having it 2TB but there currently are two problems with the current laptop namely: the USB plug of the laptop has serious problems that it disconnects the USB2 randomly then makes it USB1 speed. Secondly, it has bad heat management that it shut downs randomly without a word (or so I think it's because of that it shuts down).
As much as I would like to build from the junk of old computers we don't use, I don't think I have the time recently to make my own NAS and experiment (and even though I'm excited in learning and setting up RAID - I don't think I have that luxury of a time at the moment).
I've been reading last night of devices like Buffalo Link Station and such but most if not all of them have their own preinstalled OS and Google searches doesn't stumble me to an. What I want actually is install Mint LXDE or Lubuntu as I prefer that it has the features and programs I'm currently using right now with the 160GB network storage.
Is there a NAS device in the market I can install Lubuntu or Mint LXDE (yeah, I think LXDE will be the best environment for the things I will do for it)? Or is it still better that I make some time and build my own NAS? Please advice *bows deeply*
PS: I've been checking for NAS devices available at a tipidpc.com (a very big local tech selling community) and found these:
Linksys Cisco NAS 200 dual SATA bay - [URL]
Buffalo Link Station Duo LS-WXL/E - [URL]
EtrayZ 2-bay [URL]
Do any of the abovementioned devices can be installed with Linux LXDE distro?
Is there a way to differentiate between a 32 bit and 64 bit distro from the command line?
I also need to know this for a CentOS 5 box.
I just built a computer that I'm going to use as a home network server for our music, pix, etc. I installed and it was working for a few minutes then just disappeared... I have no idea what happened, but here is my config file... and to note, we have 2 ubuntu desktops running on the network and 1 windows7 pc... Havent even attempted the windows part yet, so if you want to help with that too,

I have 64-bit ubuntu 9.10 server edition running in a media server for my house. But over the last few months I've discovered that its loosing files! Its not all files, Just music. It will lose anywhere from about half an album the every song in the folder, leaving the artwork if it was in there. At first i thought It was iTunes reorganizing my files, but thats not the case, as i've looked around for them, and told iTunes pretty much to stop messing with my file locations. My boss who's pretty Linux savvy says that 9.10 is really buggy. I've tried doing updates (sudo apt-get update/upgrade) but its still losing music.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have the opportunity to set up our local public library with a linux server. The primary need is for the server to land wifi users to a hotspot splash screen where they will accept terms of use and indicate what town they are from by checking a box or selecting from a dropdown menu. Users of terminals in the library would also have to indicate what town they are from. Things such as content filtering may come later. What distro would be recommended for this? Ease of use and configuration is important. They basically want to track use of the internet.

View 14 Replies View Related1-When entering a music CD, video or files, any programs or music or video players and desktop are closed are removed all the icons and I can not open any program only on firefox, I can not see the files or anything . (NOTE CD-rom is in mint condition)
2-I graphics effects ruin the entire desktop and when it is in fact no graphic still looks bad everything looks pixelated or striped like when flex is damaged or something is damaged and is in perfect condition.
Now I'm going with the version 10.04 of ubuntu:
1-I have the same problem with the CD I had in 9.10, except that in the 10/04 I can open some programs with the Emphaty and monitor systems.
2-When you close the laptop when I open the screen looks as if the flex embers damaged or broken screen (when it is of course) and I have no other to reset it.
3-When you drive about 30 minutes using computed with any open programs (Firefox, Emphaty, emesene, movie player, Gnome player) to close it or minimize it gets super slow and sometimes if I Friza and then to turn it off and repeat history.
4-When I'm watching a movie or a video with movie player is super slow (just what I'm playing does not the OS) as if Lageado and stuff. But with Gnome looks pretty good player just the video looks very small and I can not put it full screen. Certainly in a Dell Latitude C610 Pentium III-Processor: 1000/700mhz-Memory: 512MB Graphics-Card: 16mb.
I recently got an iPod touch 2nd gen. I plugged it in and it immediately showed up in Rhythmbox. I dragged and dropped music files to the iPod icon listed under devices on the left hand pane. The files ARE on the iPod, I can confirm by finding them on the device in Nautilus. The problem is, they do not show up in the music library on the actual iPod. Did I miss something, or is there a step I must take to get them to show up in the iPod's music library so I can play them?

CentOS 5.4 w/ Kloxo
CentOS 5.4 w/ cPanel
Ubuntu 10.04
OpenSuse 11.1
Slackware 13
Debian 5
Fedora 12
What I Plan to Do?I plan to have multiple sites about 15 of them to be exact, running off a VPS. I also wish to install a RTMP:// (FMS) on it.I want these sites to be about 15,000 guests per/day maximum, I will be streaming to the RTMP server from Flash Media Encoder, and having it stream to some of my websites so users can watch.I don't know what web control panel to use, because cPanel is expensive, and it's the only one I've been exposed to, so if you could recommend a control panel also, that would be awesome.
Which distro is the best for a webserver? and are there any specifics I should keep in mind choosing one?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have an old SPARCStation 10. I'm looking for a distro to toss on it so I can use it as a DNS server. I've tried both OpenBSD and NetBSD...one throws an exception, the other locks up soon after booting into the OS. From the looking that I've done, the ones that support the SPARC platform only support SPARC64. Are there any that I can put on that old Sun machine?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a linux box set up as a multi-purpose server for my home with three Windows client PC's. The linux box is based on a slightly modified Slackware 9.0 distribution using Linux 2.4.20 and an unfortinately old, slow AMD processor with a miserable 512Kb RAM. The linux box serves the CIFS file system to the Windows boxes, runs the SQUID HTTP proxy, the Apache web server, a print server, does masquerading, mail serving and a very effective firewall using iptables.
This system, although slow, has run perfectly for several years.Let me say that again - This system works perfectly.I had decided that now is the time to upgrade the hardware, so I bought a Gigabyte LGA775 motherboard which has two 1Gb network interfaces on it, an ASUS 256Mb PCI-E display card, 2Gb of DDR3 RAM, an Intel Core2-Quad processor and a bunch of 500Gb SATA drives to set up a RAID5 array (but I intend that the system boot off one of several 40Gb PATA drives I have).I set up the processor, motherboard, display card, RAM, a SATA DVD Drive and a 40Gb PATA hard disk in a "breadboard" layout and installed distro 13.1, being careful to set up the static IP for the local network, dhcpcd to get an IP address from the cable modem (my internet connection) and to enable ip_forward in the network configuration.
Then I installed a script invoked by /etc/rc.d/rc.local which installed all the SAME iptables rules as my old Linux box. There was one minor glitch when I had to change 8 occurrences of "-d ! $LOCAL_NET to" "! --destination $LOCAL_NET" but that was no problem. I also set up /etc/resolv.conf, /etc/hosts , the BIND server files etc. etc. exactly as in the old box.
I am able to ping mirror.aarnet.edu.au (this is at the heart of Australia's internet hub network - if it's down the whole bloody thing is down) and have the system find the correct IP from the designated nameservers and contact that server with a return trip time of 35ms. I am able to run a telnet session from one of the Windows boxes and edit files on the Linux server. So both network interfaces work and I've got them the right way around.I am able to run FTP on one of the Windows boxes and connect through to mirror.aarnet.edu.au, although it seems to hang when I try a DIR (but then so does the old linux system).
I know this is going to sound lazy but can midnight commander be installed to ubuntu server 10 from another distro cd?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've had an awkward problem lately: every music player I use wants to instead of play music from my USB external hard drive, stream music from it. I have no idea why it suddenly started doing that. It may have been an accidental key-combo I pressed, thinking I had another window targeted and didn't bother pressing it again for my Totem music player. So I closed out of Totem in hopes that Rythmbox would work like totem used to. Well, it doesn't. It wants to stream music now.The problem with the streaming music is trivial, but here it is: I have a playlist with a little over 300 songs. I have Totem set to shuffle and repeat my music. Streaming music with it makes it just stop randomly after a few songs, and when I try to pause music and play it later it takes a good 30 seconds before it kicks back in at the beginning of the song.Like I always ask because I don't know enough to give back to the community yet, can anyone help me? Thanks.
View 2 Replies View RelatedFor a long time, I've been downloading music from the Amazon MP3 Store (using Windows). I had hoped the Ubuntu One Store would allow me to use Ubuntu for downloading instead of booting into Windows. To date I've only bought and downloaded one album using the Ubuntu Store. Two reasons, namely that the albums are cheaper in the Amazon Store (at least the ones I've bought have been cheaper) and the files are hidden after download from the Ubuntu One Store.
I was reading last night that Banshee will be the new default music player in Ubuntu 11.04, so, I downloaded and installed Banshee which I discovered has the option to let me download from the Amazon Store (something I've not managed to do yet in Ubuntu). So I gave it a try and it downloaded an album successfully. As an added bonus, the music was downloaded to my Music folder and wasn't downloaded to a hidden folder anywhere. So now I have access to the Amazon Store (cheaper) and the files are not hidden (much easier to make a cd or move to another device for backup).
As of now, I'm exclusively using Banshee because of the reasons I've given above and I can see no sense in using the Ubuntu One Store as it stands. Will Banshee actually be the default music player in 11.04? If so, will it retain the ability to go to the Amazon MP3 Store? If so, will that then be the default for downloading music? If so, what will become of the current default and any music that's already been downloaded from there?
I come here to seek your help in my quest to build a simple print server. You see, I have an old R31 Thinkpad and I want to hook up two Samsung printers to it. That is, I want to be able to share the aforementioned printers between Macs and PCs alike on my petty home network. I've had some success with Ubuntu server, but I find it to be a bit unstable and somewhat heavy. Could anyone recommend a distro or better yet a process by which I can set up this home server?
The IBM R31:
Processor:Intel Celeron 1.13 GHz
Cache Memory:256 KB - L2 cache - Advanced Transfer Cache
RAM: 128 MB - SDRAM - 133 MHz - PC133
Hard Drive: 20 GB

I have desktop workstastation with the following parameters:
HP Workstation xw series 64bit
2xXeon 3.2GHz
2Gb ram

I want to use it as server to host my personal page and to learn to manage server, apache and etc. I doubt which distro to use. I used slackware 13 before on my laptop as desktop OS. Also I heard that CentOS is easy to update and manage. Which distro is good for that?
I just started to play with ssh so I connected to my media-pc with ssh from my laptop. I was always able to start a music player and play the music on the media-pc. Since yesterday the sound is gone. When I do top on the mediapc, I see my player running.
When I open my player locally on the mediapc, I can hear the music.
I think the sound disappeared after a update, but maybe it disappeared because I opened a player locally (on the mediapc) I don't know.
The laptop and mediapc both use a fully updated 9.10
update: when I connect from mediapc to laptop, I can play music on my laptop
