I am searching for a way to have multiple sessions or users on the same vnc server. I have a machine that I need to remotely access as root (for admin purposes) and as myself (as the normal user) the rest of the time. I probably will never have to remotely login at the same time as both root and myself (I am not that multitasking!)I searched the web for almost 1 hour without finding anything useful... Right now my /etc/rc.d/rc.vncservers.conf looks like:

Ubuntu 10.10 Server is loaded. Openssh has been loaded.
I have multiple users which need access to server via ssh.
My impression from reading about ssh is that a key needs generated for each person. Thus, each key will have a passphrase that is unique to them.
In /etc/ssh/sshd_config, the default sshd_config suggest using:
%h/.ssh/authorized_keys
My assumption is %h is a variable that will allow the current user to use the public key stored in his home directory under the .ssh folder in a file called authorized_keys. Is their a command string that automatically populates the authorized_keys file?
I am surprised that even though there are a number of hidden (e.g. .****) files located in the home folder, there is not one automatically generated as .ssh. It appears I have to create that directory myself. I am especially surprised by this since it appears the instructions for generating a key seems to load the key in the home directory instead of proceeding to create a .ssh folder to store the keys in.
It is not clear, but it appears that the public key needs to be copied or appended to the authorized_keys file, but, using the scheme above, the public key needs to be copied or appended to each users authorized_keys file instead of appending all public keys to a single authorized_keys location.
It then appears that each persons authorized_keys file needs permissions set to 600.
It also appears that if I decide to use RSA instead of DSA, I would do the same thing above but would use authorized_keys2 file instead.
Why doesn't the home folder which gets automatically set up for each user automatically get a .ssh folder generated? i.e Why does it have to be created by hand? Does it need the same permission on the .ssh folder? ie 600?
My aim is to allow many to log on via ssh simultaneously and then allow many to simultaneously vnc into their respective gnome desktops.

I'm having trouble breaking down permissions in linux. Here's the scenario. I have two users: UserA & UserB with each having to ownership and access to directories myDirA and myDirB respectively.
UserA --> /source/myDirA
UserB --> /source/myDirB
I need to set the permissions so that userA can access myDirA and myDirB. There are other users and directories but they should not be able to view outside of their own directories (which is the way it is now). I don't have groups set up for them and I'd rather not change anything else but just the permissions.

They're read/write/exec permissions are identical.

We are working on a project to create a display wall of 8 monitors arranged as 2 high by 4 wide. Each monitor is connected to a single machine and all machines are networked with a master machine with its own, seperate monitor.
Our goal is to get the 8 machines to share a single desktop, with the master machine acting as the server. We have looked at using Xinerama or NMM, but we are unsure about how to get started configuring the multi-machine, multi-head display.

I recently installed vsftpd on my server. I noticed that users on the machine can login into vsftpd with their username and password on the machine and go to their root dir "/home/username".Now, I want to give some people a vsftpd username and password so they can upload and download files and folders to their folder, but this folder has to be in the "/var/www/(username)" folder. I don't want them to be able to go to any other folder than their own folder like "/var", "/etc" or "/home" etc. Also I don't want them to be able to login on the machine as a user, through putty for example. They should only be allowed to acces their folder with vsftpd, nothing else.

I have a custom PS1 that I would like to use for my user account however when I view my users .bashrc file, there is no line entry there for 'PS1='. Can someone please tell me if I have my own custom user PS1 line entry, where do I place it so I can have some extra function and colors in my RHEL 5 system.

This is my first attempt at setting up a server. I have just installed Ubuntu Server 8.04 fresh from the CD. I have a fixed IP address. I just cannot seem to be able to ssh into the darn thing.
From a Solaris unix box, I get the message "Local: Bad packet length 1349676916."
From a SuSE Linux box, I get the message "Read from socket failed: Connection reset by peer"
From a mac box, I get the message "Connection closed by 'IP address'"
I can ssh out to another server just fine. I don't know what to even do.

Is there a way that I can set a quota for all new users that get created? I want to limit the hard drive space they get. I don't want to have to keep setting each new users quota either.

I had Ubuntu 9.10 running ok, but I've decided to try Lucid Lynx with Kubuntu and was quite impressed with the quality of KDE. Everything worked out of the box also.Until I tried to login with two other accounts this computer had...With one of the users I get both errors seen on the snapshot. One regarding the network manager (which I think it was given just because it was already started by another user), and the ibus error, which completely locks the user from accessing any other drive or usb disk.For the third user, even if creating it from scratch (not re-using his /home), I get an error:

The computer now restarts and during the log-in process, I choose to login into dan's account.
At this point, when I am logged in into dan's account, will Ubuntu run the crontab jobs that belong to david / joel?

I've just set up NIS on my home network (probably not necessary on this scale, but I wanted to try it out). The server and the clients are all running Debian Lenny. I've got it up and running and have my NIS users on the server logging into graphical desktops on a client machine.My problem is this: The users cannot access a lot of services that are native to the client because they're not members of the right groups (for example, they have no sound because they're not members of the audio group). I figured it would be easy; just add users to groups with the usermod command but the response I get is that the user in question is not present in /etc/passwd. If I understand NIS correctly I'm not supposed to add my users to /etc/passwd on the client machines.

I want to setup a git repository, three of four users will contribute, so they need to download the code and shall be able to upload their changes to the server or update their branch with the latest modifications.So, i setup a linux machine, install git, setup the repository, then add the users in order to enable the acces throught ssh.Now my question is, What's next?, the git documentation is a little bit confusing,i.e. when i try from a dummy user account to clone the repository i got:

Ok, for various (mostly security) reasons I was experimenting in running certain apps as a different user id (on Karmic).
I can get X to forward to my main session without a problem but I cannot get the sound to work. Sound works fine in my main session, but when I run sound as another user I get plenty of errors like:

I am not a big linux GUI person, so I have rarely dealt with sound systems under Linux. What is the simplest way to get this to work in a relatively secure way? (I do realize that my security is already a bit compromised by allowing the secondary user access to X, but that can't be helped)

I work in a company where the Ubuntu server is managed by different people around the world.
Day-to-day admin : me in France with an Azerty keyboard
Level 1 24/7 support : team in US with a Qwerty keyboard
Of course there's commands like sudo dpkg-reconfigure console-setup but this one affects the whole system. I've searched quite a lot on how to change the keyboard layout for one person only, but it always relates to the Gnome interface. So I'd like to know if you knew a way to locally change the keyboard layout, only the SSH connection of the user? Maybe in the startup scripts of the bash session, or even better, when the user types his user login (so it detects his language and automatically switches to the right keyboard).

filter bandwidth for some users (about 150, from 100.100.100.1 trough 100.100.100.250) on LAN. All LAN users connect to the internet through RedHat linux server and all I could do so far is to ban some of them using iptables and commands

I just know it has to be possible to let two users (since I have two kids) share the same PC at the same time using a 2nd graphic card, two displays, two keyboards, two mice. I have seen one 10 year old "how to" which just didn't seem like it would fly with today's XFree/DBUS/all USB setups.
Does anyone know how to do this? I would like each user to see a log in screen and log into a GUI desktop (it doesn't have to be KDE, but that is what we have been using). The MB and the video card use the same type of GPU. The PC has a dual core AMD, and 4 GB of RAM, so the resources should be fine for school work, KDE Educational software/games. Other than squid, there isn't particular server running on it either, so resources should not be an issue.

In our organization there are around 1000+ users are using mails. The mailing system is implemented under RHEL using postfix and dovecot. For user based quotas i have implemented Disk Quota. But the problem when i want to edit quota for multiple users with similar limits i'm doing "edquota user" for every users. It seems very difficult. Now I wanna know:
1. Is there any way to edit quota value for multiple users at a single shot?
2. Also there is any method to send alerts mail to the end users on disk utilization?

I have two user accounts on this machine. This problem is particularly noticed when browsing the web in Google Chrome (though I'm not sure if this a Chrome-only problem, so I'm posting this here). My distro is Kubuntu, but all my user accounts use Gnome.
Basically, I have the same font and display settings set up on both user accounts, but the fonts are not showing up the same. I'm not sure if at some point a long time ago I did something on one account that I never did on another to change something, but either way I can't seem to find any difference in any of the settings, yet the display is still different.
This is easier explained with screenshots.
1st user account: [URL]
2nd user account: [URL]
Note how the fonts appear bold and not bold, note the different appearance of the (c) character on the webpage, and note the size of the "Google" image is different.
For Chrome settings, both are set at 100% zoom, so this is not an issue of scale. Both user accounts are also set at 1600x900 resolution. Notice that the Google Chrome fonts are both set exactly the same, as are the Gnome system fonts.
Does anybody have a clue what I'm forgetting to check here? I believe the 2nd user account is the correct one, and the 1st one is wrong, since it clearly looks uglier.
