Ubuntu Servers :: Create Anonymous User ("ftp") With Password?
Dec 1, 2010
I configured a server with vsftpd, and what I want to do is force local users to use SSL (which I have done), and allow anonymous users on the "ftp" username to access the server with only a password and no SSL. Here is my configuration file:
Code:
# Example config file /etc/vsftpd.conf
#
# The default compiled in settings are fairly paranoid. This sample file
# loosens things up a bit, to make the ftp daemon more usable.
# Please see vsftpd.conf.5 for all compiled in defaults.
i'm using ftp server with RHEL-5.1 now i wish to an anonymous user can create and upload some file on my ftp server... for this i configure the entries in /etc/vsftpd/vsftpd.conf
anonymous_enable=YES # Uncomment this to allow local users to log in. local_enable=YES
I want to add 50 new users, not on the server yet I want to add them all to group Accounting - with 1 option, not user by user I want to setup a default password for them all, and have it say something like 'You must now change password or no access will be permitted' Any other options I also want to do once, not for each user?
I want to create one user without password using useradd command. Is there any way we can do the same? I have googled it but couldn't get the perfect solution
I'm trying to write a script that will prompt the user for a username/password, then create that user/password in the right groups on all my machines. I know this is kind of a long way around to avoid a NIS server, but I like making my life more difficult.
This is what I have so far:
Code:
the script has 2 problems: The "if" functions return an error and do not compare the strings successfully. whatever password is entered does get applied properly and the user is unable to login
I'm using Ubuntu 10.4 i set up the ftp server and config it. i'm trying to created name and password for my sister so she can login into my ftp server.
I also have one more problem, at this point i can only login into my internal ip, and when i try to login with the external ip, it wont let me in. so at this point i can only login on my local network.
I'm trying to use Nautilus's connect to server to connect to an ftp server, but I'm having a problem. The username on the ftp server is "anonymous", but it requires a password. When Nautilus sees "anonymous" as the username it assumes it's dealing with a public ftp server and doesn't prompt for a password, and then, of course, I fail to connect.
I've tried modifying the .gtk-bookmarks file to account for this, but this leads to another problem. The password opens with a / and for whatever reason, this leads to Nautilus popping up an error: "Could not connect to ftp://anonymous:0/[rest of password]@[server]". It's adding a "0" to the beginning of my password for some reason. Is there any way to fix this without changing the password?
Unless your distro has taken care of it Centos 5.5, you'll need to create a user with a password and read/write privileges for program database. You can do this using the MySQL command line client if you are familiar with it. Well I am not familiar with it, so I wam wondering how to do it. As well when I run
mysql - p program </usr/share/program/mysql.sql>
It asks for a password. how do i find out this password.
I am attempting to configure vsftpd to allow anonymous users to PUT files into a shared incoming directory. This would be like a dropbox for my customers. Ideally, the incoming directory's contents would not be viewable by the users.
I believe that refused connection is due to the PAM configuration for vsftpd.

In my house I have a small computer running ubuntu karmic that works as a server/media center.
I would like to have a folder (my ~/public folder) openly available to the entire world via anonymous ftp.
I have read somewhere that the defauld vsftpd config is basically this: no local user login, anon only and sharing a folder called /home/ftp, but I can't get this to work.
how to add files (and where) for anonymous download. I installed vsftpd and configure /etc/vsftpd.conf file...just few common options like allowing anonymous, download, upload. And now i can login with anonymous. But i dont know what to do next, i want to try to download and upload files.
I'm trying to get vsftpd running with both anonymous and local user access to the same folder. The directory I'm using is /tftp with the following permissions:
I want to fix my disks with fsck but using sudo init 1 is not allowing me in. It shuts my services down, then gives a "Give root password for maintenance" prompt. I've tried my password, but it rejects it.
When i try to create a new samba user the computer locks up and i get this message. can someone help me out. TB08997608 connection.py:630:call_blockingBusException: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.Spawn.ChildExited: Launch helper exited with unknown return code 1
I am looking to create a multi-user LAMP server. For example the domain name behind my curent server is [URL] I would like user1 to have [URL] and user2 [URL]
Does anyone know how to make an anonymous email service like Dodgeit, com? Basically where users can go thru a web login to check any mailbox name they want at yourdomain.com.
I know you can do it thru Postfix, what other setup is needed? Any easy way of going about this?
I have webmin and usermin setup.Iam using dovecot and sendmail ,I can use usermin to login ,check or send emails.Outlook and thunderbird works as well.
But I want to use something for webmail. I am trying squirrelmail but it keeps saying invalid user and or password.
I want to password protect say a subdirectory, or a subdomain via vhost, with a username/password, but use the systems users and passwords as logins -> I want go avoid any and all .htaccess... as everyone should be doing anyway How would I go about doing this? I know my way around the apache configs fairly well, so I'm not a total newb -> I now I can use .useraccess and .pwaccess but that's flat file driven, not based off of the systems users/passwords.
Need help maintaining permissions across multiple directories. Have Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron. O/S installed, updated and running with no problems. Why is it that my administrator user id doesn't seem to have root permissions to create directories? I am trying to setup hosting 3 separate websites and therefore create 3 separate directories to manage all associated files for the 3 websites. Also, I am attempting to read through the tutorials located at:URL...
i've installed directory server in a fedora 12 box, i got it running and i can access it using coldfusion to manage users and groups.i hit a snag when creating a user, this because coldfusion cannot generate a password, the directory server needs a certificate and a ssl connection.so i started googling for a way to generate and install a certificate on the server itself and in the directory.s is my administration server and directory(it's novabase directory) not the other one.
I setup openldap and samba on 9.10. The ubuntu desktop client gets authenticated successfully with the server. But when I do a passwd on the client, only the ldap passwd is getting changed but not in the samba and the unix user account.
My smb.conf
Code:
passdb backend = ldapsam:ldap://192.168.3.100 ldap suffix = dc=example,dc=local ldap user suffix = ou=People ldap group suffix = ou=Groups
[code].....
But only the ldap password is getting changed and not in the samba and unix user account.
I set up a servber on my local machine, & also PHp - Both working fine.I'm trying to load up MYSQL i have installed it, & *can* start/stop the server. however if I do anything else with it, I get this error :-
Quote:
root@gordon-desktop:~# sudo mysqladmin -u root -h localhost password MYPASSWORD mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed error: 'Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: NO)'
Query :-
1) How do I know MYSQL is actually active ? (apart from the message it says that its statrted (or stopped).
2) Is there a way to
a) Find out the usernames that are recorded on the MYSQL server ? b) set / RESET the 'root' username (I know MYSQL root user is different to PC root user) c) anything else I can do on the PHP / website code to see if MYSQL is working
(as yet, no tables / databases etc have been set up - as I can't get past this error message - I get the same error when setting up a database.)
Ps I did allow my usermname (when logged in to ubuntu) to edit / create files in the /usr/www/ directory (but it is still OWNED by 'root' - that directory)
i changed my password and whenever i log in i get a message that ur login keyring password and user password do not match, so how do i change my login keyring password!!
I wanted to create an user but don't allow it to see the other user's home folder so I made chmod 0750 /home/folder and it worked fine so I went ahead and decided to completely forbid access to the root folder and I had the "great" idea to make chmod 0750 /, and now I'm having problems with wine and other applications, in example I used to have a folder in this address 209.239.114.51/mmgr but now it's giving me errors and if I try to run some applications I got error "There was an error creating the child process for this terminal"
This netbook only has a user with non-administrative privs on it and root user but I do not have root's password. Is there a way that I can create a new administrative user of change the current user's group so that it can do sudo commands or have more privs?
My bose ask me to convert a CentOS system password like "LMPQSMTE0nHlQ" to postfix MySQL MD5 Hased password, I find CentOS seems has 2 kinds of password form, one is shorter and the other is very long like"$1$C2MSk16n$WT5JWnzYH7XpCCjsiE2bd1", however I find postfix is exactly the later long one, so does any one know how to convert the short form to the later one
