Oct 22, 2010

I am new to Linux, have used KDE/SLAX before but am now attempting to use linux on my old computer to accomplish these objectives:

1) Run an FTP so I (& my mates) can access files anywhere wit ease(no dramas).
2) Enable sharing of my drives so I can put files from Laptop into this computer

Now I have successfully Installed Ubuntu Server (Finallllly) but then messed up cuz I installed the Gnome GUI and now cant find any place where I can type any sudo commands. vsftpd should work for me right?

Ubuntu :: Commands For Batch Deleting Folders/files By Name/type?

May 18, 2011

I'm trying to clean up a few hundred thousand mp3 files and I'm dying to find a way to automate some of the mechanical tasks I keep doing. It seems like at least two of these tasks could be easily accomplished with something at the command line, but I don't have the chops/know-how to figure out how (and would really rather not trial and error with batch deleting files & folders...).

1) Delete all folders named "_MACOSX" (and all subfolders/files contained therein) -- Basically, I'd like to apply this command to a few hundred directories that may or may not contain a subfolder called "_MACOSX" that I'd really like to get rid of.

2) Delete all files named "*.m3u". -- Similar to the first, I want to automatically scan all directories and subdirectories in a given location for all instances of this file-type and delete them wherever they're found.

3) Move all files named *.txt", "*.doc", "*.pdf" to a specific location. -- Similar to the last, except instead of deleting, I'd like to just move them, so that if there is anything worth keeping, I can keep it.

Ubuntu :: OAFIID Gnone Panel Crashes?

Jan 16, 2011

OAFIID Gnone panel crashesSince I upgraded to Ubuntu 10.10, my computer spends 5+ minutes starting up. Of that, 2 minutes or so are spent getting to log-in, which is longer than Ubuntu 10.04 took. After I log-in, it takes up to 5 minutes just to load up.I am not entirely sure what is causing this. Almost every time I start up, all the panel applets crash (e.g. "The panel encountered a problem while loadingOAFIID:GNOME_ShowDesktopApplet").

The panels that reliably fail to load are: the clock, indicator applet, indicator applet session, and fast_user_switch, though the latter is not an applet I have added to the panel.Deleting and reloading the applets, changing their location etc. does not change the problem.I know this problem has been much commented on in the forums. I have tried all the following solutions:

-- Resizing the panel
--sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop
sudo aptitude reinstall gnome-applets

General :: Removing Previously Type Commands At A Remote Server?

Aug 7, 2010

I am ssh'ing into a remote server and then su'ing to root. The problem is that sometimes, I have not paid enough attention to the console message, and I have accidentally typed in the root password at the command prompt (when for example, I had failed to provide the root password correctly the first time - so su prompt went away).

I remember reading somewhere that a history of commands typed at the console is kept somewhere.I have 3 sub questions

Where (which folder) is the file stored?

Can I edit that file and remove the root password from it?

Being the paranoid person that I am, I wonder if there is a more secure way of logging into my server - other than ssh (or am I being TOO paranoid?)

My server is running a headless Ubuntu 10.0.4

Ubuntu Servers :: Any Way To See Running Commands With Timestamp?

Jul 26, 2010

I recently hired a new tech guy to start managing our servers. In doing this I went ahead and upgraded all the servers. It has been awhile now since I sent him the details of the new server and the last time I talked to him he was joking around with one of the other clients not realizing how long it took.

I know on other server moves, my old guy could have everything setup and running in a couple days as a good amount of time is waiting for the data to copy over. I am starting to wonder if this guy is going to try and throw a huge bill at me, so I would like to know what hes doing on the server with time stamps just so I can get a idea of how much time he has been logged into the server. Does this server OS have anything like this built in?

Ubuntu Servers :: Automate Grub - Send Commands To It Via Ssh?

Sep 9, 2010

I have a server that is triple boot and the server is headless and accessed using ssh. So is there a way to tell grub before hand what os to choose or send commands to grub (of course I get rid of the timeout) to pick a different os other than the default one. Any ideas? I already know this is bad practice to have multiple os's on the same machine to be used as a server, but what about selecting a different kernel at start up.

Ubuntu Servers :: Samba Filesystem Type Impacts Performance?

Jun 4, 2010

I installed a month or so ago a Samba File Server along with Active Directory integration in my company. I choose to install on my newly created raid array, all in ext3 filesystem. The purpose of this fileserver is to have lots of files from the different departments on the company (all windows workstations except mine). Everyone has a private folder and a department folder, along with the common folder for all employees.did I made a mistake formating all to ext3? would I get a significant increase in performance if I resize the current ubuntu partiton and created a new NTFS new one and move the files to it?

Ubuntu Servers :: How To Secure Commands By Disabling Group Access

Dec 20, 2010

I'm running a server using ubuntu 10.04 x64. I want to disable access of groups to "bin" folder so they cannot execute commands.
[info: actually because of a bug in cPanel (the control panel I installed) Perl will give access to all hosting users to execute commands.]
So what I wanna do is to ban some groups on 'bin' folder, for example 'my_group1' and 'my_group2" cannot access bin but 'my_trusted_group' can access it. How is it possible?

Fedora Servers :: Tar And Mt Commands For Tape Drive?

Feb 26, 2010

I'm having issues with mt commands. For some reason, my server doesn't like backing up directories using tar.

Code:

# tar -czf /dev/st0 /www /home

ends up giving me an error message saying "removing / prefix" and then using the command

Code:

# mt -f /dev/st0 status

gives me an IOCTRL error. I've googled the error code and haven't come up with a viable fix. Thus far, the only way I've been able to check which files are on the tape is:

Code:

# tar -tzf /dev/st0

Of course, without getting the actual directories on the tape in the first place, the only files I've been able to transfer at this point are just singular files within the directories as opposed to the entire directories themselves.

Ubuntu :: Changing File System Type To Another Filesystem Type - Does It Effect On Data?

Feb 4, 2011

In my system around 73gb(pc-desktop) i have,1 primary partition(windows)-25gb, 1-extended partition(remaining gb) 3 logical partitions were there in (under) extended partition in one of the logical partition is d:drive. in my hard disk d: drive is -/dev/sda5

previosly i was fat -file system , (d:drive-/dev/sda5), i remember i changed the d: drive(d:drive-/dev/sda5) file system to ext4file system ,with following command using terminal

After doing(changing the file system)this one ,i couldnt see the d:drive data

By doing that

1q) Did i reformatted the partition? i think the new filesystem(ext4) has no knowledge of the data that was on it when it had a FAT filesystem.

2q) How to do undo operation,i tried to change the filesystem type to fat/ntfs in terminal using command --sudo mkfs -t FAT /dev/sda5.

Result:its showing text message-'mkfs.FAT: No such file or directory'(not in single quote)

I had very imp data in d:drive
