Ubuntu Servers :: Sporadic Timeouts - Access Via No IP

Apr 24, 2011

I was having a problem where my server would go unresponsive to it's No-IP redirected name while access via local net IP was unaffected. Access via the No-IP name would usually be restored within 5 minutes or so.

Ubuntu :: Sudo Permissions And Timeouts?

Feb 3, 2010

I want to make a script for something, but I'm worried the timeouts on sudo permissions (how you can't got more than 5/10 minutes between sudo commands before needing your password again). Basically, I don't want my script to be redundant and require overseeing for password inputs.

Code:
sudo echo Hello.
sleep 6000
sudo echo This is text. This shows the basis of the problem. I will need to enter my password twice.

Would allowing it to run uninterrupted be as easy as running this theoretical shell script his sudo to begin with?

Ubuntu :: Why Is Cd/dvd Media Mounting So Sporadic On 10.04

Nov 7, 2010

for some reason/s in ubuntu 10.04 lucid i get the most sporadic and seemingly random results for mounting cd's or dvd's. most of the time they just don't mount and i have to reboot my computer and then they seem to mount. I've been reading the forums and there seems to be many, many many..... posts about this problem in 10.04 as it would seem many people are having issues relating to this.i've tried every thing i can think of to resolve it (although i'm still a bit of a newbie so that might not mean much to the advanced users out there). my system is up to date, i've tried the "boot up with cd/dvd in the drive option", switching my boot order in bios, adding a /media/cdrom0 dir and using mountmanager to automount that drive at bootup but none of these options work for me.

[code]....

my installation of 10.04 is a fresh install so i don't see why i should be having the fstab issue noted in the posts but maybe i'm wrong.
here's what

Code:

dpkg -l hal

returns

Code:

Desired=Unknown/Install/Remove/Purge/Hold
| Status=Not/Inst/Cfg-files/Unpacked/Failed-cfg/Half-inst/trig-aWait/Trig-pend
|/ Err?=(none)/Reinst-required (Status,Err: uppercase=bad)

[code]....

if there is someone's expertise that i can draw upon i would be most sincerely appreciative. in fact that is such an understatement having this issue resolved would be as amazing, for me, as the entire world suddenly becoming friends (...like in the non-facebook kinda way).

Ubuntu :: Sporadic GRUB Error : Out Of Disk

Jun 21, 2010

I just replaced the HD in my computer with a larger one (1tb) and installed Ubuntu Lucid 64bit onto two partitions (100gb for / and the rest for /home). I rebooted and it loaded up fine. Did some stuff, had to restart (NVidia drivers) and it stopped at a GRUB rescue prompt, reporting the error "Error : Out of Disk". So I rebooted again and it worked no problem. But since then, every second bootup or so delivers this error, while other times it loads Ubuntu fine. I've tried running update-grub a few times and this always seems to work. But ultimately, the problem never goes away. I also had a look at this [URL] But it seems the advice given to change the 10_linux file must be only for an earlier version of GRUB2 as the file on my machine is very different.

EDIT: I've attached the output of a Boot Info Script that I got here: [URL]

Ubuntu :: 11.04 Sporadic Fuzzy / Distorted Sound

Jul 18, 2011

Have been using the exact same hardware setup for a while now (last 5 or 6 releases) and since 11.04, occasionally my sound will go really strange and fuzzy / distorted. It usually happens when I change music tracks I am listening to, but it will then effect all system noises. It will then go away as suddenly as it happened, again if I pause the track a few times to stop the distortion.

Ubuntu Networking :: Wifi Timeouts Constantly Since 9.10 / Stop It To Do So?

Feb 19, 2010

I'm using the linksys wmp300n with ndiswrapper to connect to a belkin wireless router with a static ip (192.168.2.3). The rest of the PCs in the house have .2, .4, and .5 only running windows XP and 7. This one won't stay connected during large file transfers within the network or over the internet in Ubuntu. I made a script to restart ndiswrapper but I have to do it every 2 or 3 min during a file transfer. I can't play online games at all. No ssh sessions for more than a few min... so on and so forth. None of these issues happen in Windows 7 but when it was first installed it had to do something with dhcp before it would stay connected. Windows wouldn't tell me what was going on though. code...

Debian :: Frequent Lan Connection Timeouts

Jun 9, 2015

I run a Laptop (Mint 17.1), which is connected to a Debian 8.1 server over a LAN. The systems are connected through a router. Both of them show no problems when working independently and when doing work on the internet. Also, ping works fine (no lost packets, no delays!) from Debian to Mint. However when doing a ping from the Laptop (Mint) to the Debian server, I experience frequent packet losses and timeouts. In fact, a "first" ping may lose the first 20 to 30 "tries". Thereafter, if I repeat pings immediately and quickly one after the other, they might in geral not lose packages or show delays. Ping to and from the router also works perfectly in either direction!

Of course, functions such as ssh or samba-sharing are hampered as well by this behaviour. Also, if I DO in fact manage to connect to the Debian server via ssh, my console (KDE 14) is freuqently "locked" (i.e. - doesn't show my input for a while) but in the end DOES show the characters entered and gets processed o.k. (eg. when doing an "ls"-command). Both systems are at the latest software-level and I just finished installing Debian 8.1. The situation was the same on Debian Wheezy, however.

somehow the server which has got the kernel upgrade is trying to use udp. the server goes through a firewall before getting to the netapp server and upd is not allowed.in the fstab entries, i specified tcp, proto=tcp but no matter what values i put in, it's trying to use upd.

Ubuntu :: Sporadic Grub Error 18 Prevents Boot

May 12, 2010

In the past month or two I've run into a strange problem where Grub gives error 18 "Selected cylinder exceeds maximum supported by BIOS". Strange because:
1) after a few tries it mysteriously starts working again without any change on my part
2) I am not running a dual boot system, which seems to be the usual cause of this problem
3) though I have SATA hard drives, I have the RAID capabilities disabled in the BIOS, which can also apparently lead to this problem.
I'm currently running lucid but it also happened once before I upgraded. It seemed to start happening not too long after I installed a new 1TB drive, though that drive is only mounted under /mnt/backup, and not anywhere else of importance, so it may be a coincidence.

Here are some specs on my machine:
BIOS is ALive NF6G-VSTA P1.80
I have 2 SATA drives (no IDE drives except DVD-ROM):
/dev/sda is a 200GB Samsung drive with two partitions
- sda1 is about 197GB and includes / (including /boot)
- sda2 is about 3GB of swap
/dev/sdb is a 1TB Western Digital Drive
- 1 partition mounted at /mnt/backup
If the problem is that I don't have a separate partition for /boot, shouldn't the error show up every time I boot, not just once in a while?

OpenSUSE :: Sporadic Xorg Hang With 11.3?

Aug 15, 2010

I've been running 11.3 for about 3 days, and have been noticing that it seems to crash with depressing regularity. The symptoms are, from the users perspective, the screen just locks up, mouse cursor won't move, won't respond to any keystrokes, and just dead in the water. But, I can go to another system and ssh back into this one. When I do a top I see at least one and sometimes two Xorg processes owned by root that are grabbing every available CPU cycle. This box has dual cores, so it can support two processes running close to 100% CPU. I tried sending the runaway processes a SIGQUIT signal, which did stop them and did restore normal system operation. But I couldn't find the expected core dump anywhere. If I don't do anything to stop the runaway processes, eventually the whole system locks up, including the ssh session.

I haven't been keeping a real close track, buy my general impression is that this only happens when we have two X sessions running. My wife and I usually keep separate login sessions that we switch back and forth from during the day. I realize this isn't a lot to go on. Any suggestions on what I can do to collect some more info. I particular what do I have to do to get a core dump from the runaway process and what should I do with it if I can get it.

Debian :: Where Does Gdm3 Get Its Default DPMS Timeouts

Feb 9, 2016

There's a short version at the bottom.

I just installed jessie with gdm3 and use xfce.

I like my monitor to turn off when I'm not at the computer for more than 10 or 20 minutes or so and it wasn't doing that. I haven't used Linux for years and was used to xorg.conf/x11.conf and xinitrc and such.

So I rediscovered xset is responsible for DPMS settings. xset -q revealed DPMS was off. So I used it and put it in ~/.xinitrc. It didn't work. After some canoodling around I found out about xfce's Session and Startup gui thing. I was using that to run ~/.xinitrc.

When I got to my desktop and did a check with xfce4-terminal by running xset -q it would show DPMS enabled but the values were wrong. 600, 0, 900 to be exact.

After some searching I came across the information that xscreensaver will override DPMS settings as it manages DPMS too. So after more canoodling I found out about xfce's Screensaver preferences dialogue and used that to set my values. The values would immediately be set but the problem is that they are not persistent. If I reboot or log out the values will revert to 600, 0, 900. They will only reset to what I want them to be by running xfce's Screensaver preferences dialogue manually.

man gdm3, info gdm3, grep -r DPMS in /etc/gdm3, grep -r dpms in /etc/gdm3 reveal nothing related to DPMS. I've done some searching and nothing useful.

there is an /etc/X11/app-defaults/XScreenSaver-nogl which has some DPMS settings but the times are too large (2 hours); the only thing that matches is the off setting which is specified there.

xscreensaver -no-splash is present in the output of ps so it is xscreensaver and not gnome-screensaver.

The weird thing is that I re-enabled my ~/.xinitrc in xfce's Session and Startup gui thing and it is being run, but the numbers are getting set wrong after it is run. (I put an echo command after xset dpms 900 1200 1500, and the file is appearing in ~)

Where does 600, 0, 900 come from? Mystified on how to proceed from here. I don't remember enough on how to see what's doing what. Is there some sys thing or proc thing I can monitor to find out what's setting these values?

Short version: my xset dpms values are getting reset to 600, 0, 900 every time I logout or reboot. They revert to 600, 0, 900 every time I get to my desktop. I use gdm3 and xfce. Where are these coming from?

Networking :: Double NAT & HTTPS Connection Timeouts?

Feb 2, 2011

I am having a problem with HTTPs in a double NAT'd network configuration. The scenario is like this..

[Code]...

Machines on these LANs can talk to each other no problem. There is also a NAT rule configured for traffic going from LAN A via LAN C out to the Internet. The Nokia is also doing NAT'ing. Normal web browsing works fine with this setup, but whenever I try to access HTTPS sites, it just hangs and eventually times out.Packet captures have showed lots of TCP Retransmission messages. If I logon directly to the Linux Router and fire up a browser, I am able to access HTTPS sites without any problems. This appears to be something to do with the traffic being NAT'd twice. Is there a way I can get around this without changing the config of the Nokia?

Ubuntu Networking :: Sporadic Connection To 2wire Router, All Other Routers OK

Sep 7, 2010

One day I lost my WiFi connection while doing nothing particularly interesting. OK then...I investigate, and I find that it only connects occasionally, and when it does, even then it will render a page almost none of the time. I can't even ping anything. I tried going to the router's config page (192.168.1.254 for this one) and found that even that won't load. I power cycled the router, and it did nothing. I thought that the router was dying, but I realized when I switched to Windows 7 (this is a dual boot machine) it works fine. Also, when I went back to Ubuntu and tried connecting to a neighbor down the block's WiFi, it also works fine (this is what I'm using to post this message.) I did all I could to fix this, even to the point of dismantling the machine and moving cards around and such, but it did nothing. I finally formatted my Ubuntu partition and reinstalled, and it also did nothing. It also doesn't work from the Live CD. The router works fine on all the other computers in the house, wired or wireless, and also my phone and PSP's.

While connected, in Firefox, sites sit at "looking up", "waiting for", or "connecting to". It seems to be at random which one. They all time out, none of them say server not found. I thought it was a DNS problem, so I tried some DNS's I know (Google's, OpenDNS, DNS Advantage etc.) but it did bupkis. One thing I notice is that while connected, I have a fantastic signal strength of about 85%, when before any of this happened, it was more around 70%. I didn't move the antenna anywhere or anything having to do with the reception. Also, once connected, it stays connected, it's just getting it initialized that's the problem, but even while connected it doesn't seem to work well.

This is incredibly frustrating, as I did not change anything with the router at all, in any way shape or form. It just spontaneously decided to not like Linux. The router's model is 2700HG-B.Could it be that my wireless card is dying? I've had the thing for 6 years, and had no sign of it failing. I'm thinking that can't be it because it works with the same computer and network, but with a different OS. Could there be something wrong with the Ubuntu driver for my card, ath5k? I was going to say there's something up with wpa supplicant, because I use WPA-PSK for authentication, but I turned that off from another computer and it still does not work.

Again, the problem is that Ubuntu works with every router I can connect to EXCEPT mine, and Windows 7 on the same machine works with the same router. My router works with every other device in the house. I have changed nothing networking related, and even reinstalling Ubuntu did nothing. I would try it with Ubuntu on another machine, but my machine is the only wireless one in the house (and I can't put Ubuntu on the wired ones, that would PO some people),and I would try it with a different wireless card/USB thingy, but I don't have another one.

EDIT: I got some other Live CDs out, I tried Kubuntu 10.04, and Ubuntu 9.10. NEITHER WORK!

Ubuntu Networking :: Sporadic Wifi In Natty With Thinkpad X201?

Ubuntu Servers :: Webdav Access - When Connect From Nautilus - Says - Access Was Denied

Mar 26, 2010

I'm having a problem with my webdav share. I have a secure webdav folder that gets accessed via a non-standard port and requires basic authentication. I can connect and interact with it fine via cadaver. However, when I try to connect from nautilus, it says "Access was denied." To make it even stranger, sometimes I can click on the folder in nautilus (it still mounts) and access it. Sometimes not (just repeats the error message and won't show me the contents). I may not even un-mount it, but just look at other folder, then click it again and be able to access it, but again - only rarely.

I asked a friend to try connecting from his windows vista computer and it would not work. It would not work from my windows XP virtual computer either. However, it mounts and works just find from my work computer (also Windows XP).

So it seems to be a 50/50 chance that the drive will mount on any given computer/system and work. Do anyone know what the problem may be? I'm guessing user permissions, but I can't figure out what.

I've made sure the webdav folder is owned by www-data and www-data has read access to the password file as well.

When I try connecting from nautilus, I get this in the log file:

Code:

Here is one of the (many) sites I've tried looking at: [url]

Programming :: Python / Sqlite - Database Locked Despite Large Timeouts?

Apr 8, 2010

I'm sure I'm missing something pretty obvious, but I can't for the life of me stop my pysqlite scripts crashing out with a database is locked error. I have two scripts, one to load data into the database, and one to read data out, but both will frequently, and instantly, crash depending on what the other is doing with the database at any given time.I've got the timeout on both scripts set to 30 seconds: cx = sqlite.connect("database.sql", timeout=30.0)and think I can see some evidence of the timeouts in that i get what appears to be a timing stamp (e.g 0.12343827e10 1) dumped occasionally in the middle of my curses formatted output screen, but no delay that ever gets remotely near the 30 second timeout, but still one of the other keeps crashing again and again from this. I'm running RHEL5.4 on a 64 bit HS21 IBM blade, and have heard some mention about issues about multi-threading and am not sure if this might be relevant.

Packages in use are sqlite-3.3.6-5 and python-sqlite-1.1.7-1.2.1, and upgrading to newer versions outside of RedHat's official provisions is not a great option for me. Possible, but not desirable due to the environment in general.I have had autocommit=1 on previously on both scripts, but have since disabled on both, and am now cx.commit()ing on the inserting script and not committing on the select script. Ultimately as I only ever have one script actually making any modifications, I don't really see why this locking should ever ever happen

Debian Configuration :: Timeouts And Dependency Failures On Boot - Crypto Related

Mar 27, 2016

I've got this weird problem: when I reboot my Debian 8.3 server, I have to run through the crypto unlocking processes for my encrypted volumes a few times before I actually get to a login screen. The operation times out 85% of the time, leaving me to reboot and try over and over until the system is happy.

Here's my partitioning setup (manually partitioned at install):
/boot: 500 MB, EXT2, nodev, nosuid, noexec
/tmp: 2 GB, EXT2, AES-256/xts-plain64 with RANDOM KEY
swap: 2.5 GB, AES-256/xts-plain 64 with RANDOM KEY
/: 35 GB, EXT4, AES-256/xts-plain 64 with PASSPHRASE
/var: 35 GB, EXT4, AES-256/xts-plain 64 with PASSPHRASE
/home: 45 GB, EXT4, AES-256/xts-plain 64 with PASSPHRASE

Here's the output from journalctl -b -p 3:
Code: Select allDate and time | server name | systemd[1]: Timed out waiting for device dev-sda5.device
Date and time | server name | systemd[1]: Dependency failed for Cryptography Setup for sda5_crypt
Date and time | server name | systemd[1]: Dependency failed for Encrypted Volumes
Date and time | server name | systemd[1]: Dependency failed for dev-mapper-sda5_crypt.device
Date and time | server name | systemd[1]: Dependency failed for /tmp

[Code] ....

I had the same problem in previous builds where I chose Twofish instead of AES, and I was hoping that the timeouts would be fixed by switching to AES as my CPU has the AES instruction set. Obviously that didn't make a damn bit of difference.

What am I doing wrong, or what should I change in my setup? The encryption is a requirement. Could the problem be caused by something as stupid as using a RANDOM KEY instead of a PASSPHRASE on /tmp and swap?

Debian 8.3 as OS version.

I have realized that the system completely ignores when I insert a USB stick (LaCie 8Gb USB Key). By ignore, I mean it doesn't get mounted, and /media/ is empty. Interesting enough if I go into YAST and probe for Hardware Information, I find my USB stick there under the USB section. There is no specific entry for the key in /etc/fstab by the way, as far as I know I don't need to specify how a USB stick should be mounted. Auto-mount, when it actually works, is perfectly fine.

Ubuntu Servers :: Apache Access Though VPN

Sep 1, 2010

just switched our company from windows server to linux and everything is going good except we have 4 vpn connections though out the country coming to our server. All giving the client machines ip addresses of 192.168.x.x based on where they are located 192.168.1.x for the main location 192.168.2.x for a second location etc, and IIS could see the clients ip instead of the wan ip and was setup to block all ips except 192.168.x.x ip's and this worked great.

So i set up apache the same way, to allow only 192.168 ip's but i guess it doesn't work that way in apache for connections coming though vpn? 2 out of our 4 VPN connections are not static IP's, so the 2 that are I just add that ip to the allow list and that worked. But i don't think we should HAVE to get static ips for the other 2, that's one of the benefits of using VPN, especially if our old windows server didnt need it.Is there any way for apache to see the clients ip address for access or is there something somewhere else that needs changed for this?
