Ubuntu Servers :: Setup A Ftpd With Multiuser Shares?

Sep 12, 2010

I want to share a directory (and all subdirs) via an FTP service to several users. I have searched around a bit and I think it's quite confusing to set this up. I want to have access to the files too, don't want to login as root to access the files.

Should I include my account in ftpgroup and chgrp on the directory for them to be able to read?

Ubuntu Servers :: Pure-ftpd DontResolve Being Ignored?

Apr 12, 2011

I'm really confused with this one. Yesterday our FTP cluster went down, i havent yet tracked the reason but i suspect a security update killed it as automatic updates are enabled (i will be turning those off now!).

Anyway, FTP connections were receiving a 425 Sorry, Unable to resovle error message, i sound the solution to be to disable dns lookups with the DontResolve > yes option.

but for some unknown reason this is only working on my failover box! when i restart pure-ftpd on the primary box the command switch -H is missing?

i've done the same thing on both boxes by creating a file in /etc/pure-ftpd/conf called DontResolve and editing it to just read the word 'yes', been over it and checked for spelling mistakes and i cant find any reason why its ignoring the option?

Server :: CentOS 5.5 - Samba Setup For Two Shares

Dec 4, 2010

Still new to Linux and especially samba. I have setup samba for 2 shares, will list below shares. 1 which requires a login and 1 temp folder which I would like guest access to. Currently I have security = user which works great for the data folder which requires a login. If I try to access temp I get asked for a user name and password as well. I tried to set security = share which then allowed access to temp with out a login but also allowed access to the data folder. From the data folder I emoved public = yes. I then get asked for a user name and password like I should but the system will not accept it. This is a Centos 5.5 server with a mail server on it.

Fedora :: Multiuser Environment With F11 And Mozilla Browsers?

Sep 13, 2009

I think I've found a problem in Firefox 3.5 in Fedora 11, don't know if this may be also the case for other distributions. So, the problem I currently have is that other user accounts on the system cannot access correctly the fonts from Mozilla based browsers (Firefox, Epiphany, Galeon, SeaMonkey), the problem is that at many websites the browser simply won't display any fonts at all, all the text is "blank", it IS there, but as if the characters were transparent, they aren't drawn. Besides this problem, Firefox (or Epiphany, or any of the others) will eat up as much as 80% of all the RAM (and in this 4Gb setup, that is simply too much for the browser alone!), not to mention that performance is awefully degraded while the HDD is spinning like mad and the browser is loading whatever it may be.

However, my primary account is unaffected (reason why I thought it may be related to privileges). I need this system to be multiuser. Looking around I don't seem to see any signs of this issue, I have no idea why is this the case. The only way to get the other browsers to display any fonts at all is to force the desired fonts to use (not allowing the websites to be viewed as intended by the authors).

Any hints as to why is this so? BTW, in the main account I have the option for the websites to choose the font enabled, and no font drawing problems whatsoever.

Security :: Setup A Kerberos + OpenLDAP Server To Manage Users For Our Samba Shares

Feb 13, 2011

Trying to setup a Kerberos + OpenLDAP server to manage users for our Samba shares (was going to use just OpenLDAP, but apparently it is less secure than using Kerberos with it). (Distro: CentOS 5.5) Haven't even gotten to the point of connecting either to Samba yet. I have set up a Kerberos server, and configured it as necessary. I am happy that it is working as intended, as I can login and manage principals from both the local terminal and remotely on other clients.

I have setup a server (sv1.myhost.net), and configured it to talk to Kerberos (auth.myhost.net). I have created both a [URL] principal, and a testuser principal. I have set the password on the testuser but not on the host/sv1.myhost.net. I have added the keys for both users to the keytab file on the sv1.myhost.net. I am at a Windows 7 machine (on the same internal network), and have installed the Network Identity Manager. It is able to request a ticket successfully for the testuser account.

When I use putty w/GSSAPI (0.58) to remote login to the system, it says using 'testuser' and then just hangs there. Eventually putty connection times out. The fact that both machines can connect to the auth server to communicate with kerberos correctly suggests firewalls are correct. The relevant entries in sshd_config have been uncommented to tell srv1 to use Kerberos authentication.

I get this error:"The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for some of the items."I can connect from the command line with smbclinet and write fine. I have tried several different users on both the Mac (cannot write) and Ubuntu clients (can write). Is this something to do with the ._filename files that finder creates? Or is there something wrong with the way I've set up my server? This is the first time I've used it with a Mac client.

You can stop this operation by clicking cancel. And then this error dialogue box:

As far as I know I have no firewalls in place; Ubuntu does not have one by default is that correct? At this time I don't have a Windows computer to try to connect too the server at this time, but plan to in the future that is why I want to use Samba.

I am connecting the two boxes with an D-Link DIR-825 router; both boxes are on the same subnet. Are there settings in the router that could be affecting this?

Ubuntu Servers :: Accessing SAMBA Shares Since Upgrade?

May 27, 2010

provide support for a small business that uses Windows machines to access files stored on an Ubuntu server which has just been upgraded from 8.04 to 10.04 (32 bit version). Before the upgrade the users accessed their share by this batch file:

Code:

net use x: \servernamesharename /user:username

This would then prompt the user for his or her password which they would enter to allow them access to the share.Since upgrading to 10.04, the user gets a "system error 58" stating "The specified server cannot perform the requested operation"If the batch file command is changed to:

Code:

net use x: \servernamesharename

The same error message is given. The only work around I have found is to modify the file to read:

Code:

net use x: \servernamesharename /user:username password

This is not ideal at all as it makes the password protection useless. When I performed the upgrade I left the smb.conf unchanged. The smb.conf file is:

Ubuntu Servers :: Can See Samba FileServer Cannot Access Shares

Jun 27, 2010

I recently upgraded my ubuntu samba fileserver to 10.04 along with increasing the size of my RAID 1 /home directory.I am using the same smb.conf file setup I have used on intrepid ibis setup and hardy heron setup before that.On my new setup, I can see the ubuntu server on my windows 7 machines, but I can't see the shares and can't access them.In checking the logs (/var/log/samba), one log continues to look for a printer share from one Windows machine that I have not set up on samba yet.

I have found a few people who have reported similar problems online, even a few who have filed bugs, but then they say "my computer started working suddenly. I don't know what happened." so they closed the bug. or "my computer started working after I rebooted my machine." I have rebooted all machines on the network. That doesn't fix it.

Ubuntu Servers :: Add Users Form Laptop (10.10) And NFS Shares

Dec 1, 2010

I have a server 192.168.1.14 (I will call it 14) it runs Ubuntu server 10.04 and I have my Ubuntu Laptop 192.168.1.3 ( I will call it 3) that runs Ubuntu 10.10. I need to find a way to add users from my Laptop (user X) or a Windows machine user (Y). What I am trying to accomplish is to have file permissions some for Y only and some for X only and some for a group that contains X and Y. Now I have a Dir, on the server 14, with the owner Z (server user) and I gave it permission 760. Now my user X, from Laptop 3, (they have the same name in real life) is not able to access those files on a NFS share.

I would like to have the 760 perm and be able to access those files without doing a 777. I am thinking to add all users (XYZ)to a group and give read permissions for the group. My dilemma comes when the users are on different machines. I already created equal users on server with the same name but it does not do the trick. When connecting to server from 3 I can't access files that are owner by the group where user Z belongs (even if user X has the same name and password). I am thinking there has to be a deeper way of identifying users.

Ubuntu Servers :: Authentication Methods Over Network Shares And SFTP

Feb 15, 2010

I run some IT systems for my schools Engineering student organization.

We are upgrading our systems and I just purchased a new server system which I am configuring.

I am using Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx and the new likewise-open packages.

The points I bring up following this sentence are to fulfill this final goal : Get SFTP, SSH, and Network Share's over our private network all using the schools Active Directory for auth and it's groups to derive privs.

So... Here's what i've done and what i've tried to do.

1 ) I set up likewise-open and got it to join the domain. When I do this I can ssh to localhost as 'schoolnetworkADname'. So that part works (hurray). To get a network share to use these same auth methods I have tried installing likewise-open-server. Everything launches find and the daemons run, but when I go into computer management on a windows server to set up the actual shares, I get permission denied. The account it is giving permission denied to is the same AD account that join likewise-open to the network, so... what is going on.

2 ) Samba, fail. I can't seem to get samba to run on this machine at all, which is strange because even my Samba expert was puzzled. It just won't let Samba join the domain properly, and due to this, I want to keep on the newer likewise package... unless I have to switch to this.

How I can get the lame likewise-open-server to work?

Ubuntu Servers :: Samba Shares Using Active Directory Permissions?

Jul 20, 2010

I am the IT Manager at a research facility. We have a fairly unique network configuration in order to support all of the different projects we have going on. We have Red Hat, Ubuntu, Windows XP/Vista/7, Windows Servers 2003, Ubuntu servers, Red Hat servers, and even a few Netgear ReadyNAS and Buffalo Terastations. Over the last few years, I have been migrating all of my users and accounts to a single ACL list, which I chose to be a Windows AD 2003 server. 95% of my users work on Windows platforms and just use ssh tunnels to develop on our linux boxes.

However, i ran in to a problem with our Linux boxes not being able to symbolic link on my Windows 2003 file shares. Of course, this is a problem with Windows not supporting symbolic links. I know 2008 does support this feature, but given the economy and the budget restraints, we cannot afford to purchase the updates we would need, so now I am moving all of my shares to a Ubuntu 10.04 server using Samba. I have joined the server to my AD domain successfully, i can login using my AD credentials, and even assign ownership and group permissions using AD users/groups.

Here is my question.

I would like to keep the AD permission schemes intact. I have several shares that contain folders that have individual permission settings. For example, I have a /shared directory that contains about 50 different folders. Some of these folders I allow my users to write data to, some just read, and others I deny access to complete groups and just allow key groups to access (for example, personnel data should only be accessed by the Administrative staff).

Is there a way to make this work?

I can assign uid and gid manually per folder in Samba, but i would like to have the possibility to add multiple users and groups with permissions to folders, which I do not believe can be done with the standard chown commands. Currently, I can see the folder permissions from my Windows box, but when I try to edit the permission settings, it defaults back to full access. So my AD permissions are not being saved.

Fedora Servers :: Samba Shares Not Accessible?

Jan 5, 2009

I'm having some troubles with my samba shares on a fresh install of Fedora 10 x86_64 on my laptop. The laptop has only the KDE Desktop environment. I'm trying to share between this computer and my homebrew server via a wrt54g linksys router running DD-WRT firmware. The server is running Fedora 9 i386.

The shares on the server can be read by the laptop, and I have been consistently able to mount the server shares on the laptop using mount.cifs, but only when the firewall on the server is down. Shares are only visible between the machines when the firewall is down on the machine containing the share. I set up the shares using the system-config-samba tool, and the firewalls are both set to allow samba server and samba client. I can typically see the laptop from the server, but not the shares, and only when the laptop firewall is disabled. I can access the Laptop shares from the laptop. When trying to mount the laptop shares on the server, a warning message stating that the mount failed appears. Shares show up as correct in both the system-config-samba tool, and the KDE sharing tools. The share shows a "shared" icon in the dolphin browser.

From all that I know, the shares should work perfectly. I've searched the web, perused the man pages and how-to's, and combed through the forums, and everything I've found tells me that the shares should be working. Since they are not working, it leads me to believe that I must have made a mistake someone and not noticed it.
