Ubuntu Servers :: Extraordinarily Fast Boot Times In VM?

Nov 1, 2010

At work, we use two very powerful servers to host a series of VMs to do some heavy-lifting analytical work. Part of my job has been to evaluate a variety of different virtualization environments, including changing the host OS (or dom0 kernel for Xen), changing the platform (KVM, Xen, ESXI, etc.), and changing the guest OS types.

I noticed a number of behaviors that Ubuntu exhibited that set it apart (almost always in a positive way) from the other OSes. Most astounding though was that when an Ubuntu 10.04 AMD64 server VM was booted from an Ubuntu 10.04 AMD64 server host (that is, same version of Host OS and Guest OS) in KVM, the guest boots in roughly 2 seconds. At least, the guest boots faster than the VNC connection can initialize.

I'm certainly not complaining, but I can't for the life of me figure out how this could be possible. I understand that the Upstart init daemon is very good about startup times.

Ubuntu Servers :: 9.10 - Web Connections And SSH Times Out

Jan 28, 2010

I am noticing really odd behaviour after upgrading from 8.10 to 9.10 (via 9.04). My server frequently becomes unreachable. I am using it as an application server, running Apache, JBoss and MySql. Once the server goes idle, all web connections time out. SSH also times out. Usually the server wakes up on second SSH attempt and then everything: Web, SSH etc seems to run fine.

This is a server machine with no GUI. Can anyone point me to power management or other such settings I can tune from commandline? I have disabled power management by adding kernel parameter acpi=off. I still have the problem. The first network connection after the machine has gone idle takes a long time. All later connections run pretty smoothly.

Ubuntu Servers :: Permissions Error For Phpmyadmin After Change To Fast CGI (mod Fcgid)?

Nov 22, 2010

I'm still getting my head around setting things up on my web server, I've configured php to run off of Fast CGI, rather than mod_php, due to better memory consumption. I've managed to get my virtual hosts configured to work with fastcgi, ensuring the following options are set:

AddHandler fcgid-script .php
FCGIWrapper /usr/lib/cgi-bin/php5 .php
Options +ExecCGI FollowSymLinks

I tried adding those settings to /etc/phpmyadmin/apache.conf, but this doesn't seem to work. Whenever I go to www.mydomain.com/phpmyadmin , I just get a 403 Forbidden Error. This used to work no problems on mod_php.

[URL].. because the alias is set so that my virtual hosts can access it through /phpmyadmin. There is probably something basic I am missing here.

Ubuntu Servers :: 9.04 - Display Server Has Restarted 6 Times / Fix It?

I've done some searching around but can't find anything conclusive on this error. The tech at my remote site restarted the 9.04 server(not sure if it was accidental or planned) and when it started the boot process, an error like the following shows up...

"The display server has restarted 6 times in the past 90 seconds. This indicates that something bad is happening."

Ubuntu Servers :: Connection Times Out When Connecting To Remote SSH?

Jan 24, 2011

When ever i run ssh -p <port> <user>@<remote IP>, i get a connection has timed out error. (i use the -p <port> part because i'm using a custom port). does anyone know what could be causing this? i know of a few *possible* problems, but i don't know how to test them all.

- I am on the same network as the server (I'm trying to test using remote IP to make sure it works before i go out an try it somewhere else)

-The router could be blocking it (i'm using linksys)

-IPtables may not be set up right (i think it is though. the only thing i've run is "sudo iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport ssh -j ACCEPT". I have changed the port for the server since then. maybe i have to restart it or something for it to recognise the change? I know very little about IPtables though).

-maybe i have to change something in my client or server config files? (the only config file i've changed is the sshd_config file on the seerver, and that was to change the port to my custom port).

thats all i can think of for now. It may be none of those. I do have the sshd_config and port forwarding in my router set to the same port, so thats good.

Ubuntu Servers :: Application To Monitor Ping Times To Clients

Sep 11, 2010

I have an embedded server running Ubuntu which is on a network with a lot of wireless AP's. The AP's doesn't support SNMP or anything else, so I monitor if they are up or down by simply pinging them continuously.

My question is if there is anything I could install on the server that could provide me with a webpage where I could see the ping time to the AP's? So it just shows a list of the IP's I have told it to ping, and what their latest response time is. This is what I basically need, but if it were more advanced than that, and could give warnings if ping time were to high etc.

Fedora Servers :: Apache: Connection Times Out Even On LAN?

Dec 19, 2009

I'm using Fedora 12 with Apache 2.2.14, and I was having this error on 2.2.13 as well.

Even when I connect to my server over LAN, Firefox times out occasionally while connecting. I can't figure out what is causing this. The error_log isn't showing anything. I even cleaned the error_log file, so that if something happened, it'd be a little easier to spot. But I'm still getting time outs, and nothing in the error_log.

Here is my httpd.conf [URL]

It's the default Fedora configuration, I've only changed the ServerName if I remember correctly. it's not the Timeout setting, because on LAN it should never time out.

Ubuntu :: How To Decrease 10.04 Boot Times

Aug 9, 2010

There seems to be quite a craze about reducing the Ubuntu boot times to 10 seconds. I never really reached the 10 second mark.. for me it was more like 30 seconds from when I selected Ubuntu in GRUB to when I was prompted to type in the password in GDM. First of all, is this what is meant by boot time? Secondly, I know this already is quite a good 'boot' time, but just for the sake of tinkering around, is it possible to reduce the time that elapses between the GRUB menu and GDM?

Ubuntu :: Slow Boot Times From 9.10 To 10.10?

Oct 23, 2010

I'm running 10.10 on an IBM Thinkpad R60 with 3GB RAM. I did a clean install of 9.10 and 10.04, and recently upgraded to 10.10. With all three, I'm noticing mething rather strange; after passing the PC's BIOS screen, I get a flashing cursor for about 20-30 seconds before Ubuntu starts booting. When I did the clean installs, I completely erased the hard drive, so I'm not sure what's causing it. The hard drive activity light is on when this happens, as well. It's very strange, as I have an old Dell Dimension 4550 with a slower hard drive and less RAM than the Thinkpad...yet it boots up faster, with no flashing cursor.

Software :: Use An Old Laptop As An RDP Client For Windows (WOL & Fast Boot)

Dec 3, 2010

I am looking to use an old laptop as a remote keyboard and monitor for a more powerful desktop computer. I do not want the desktop running when I am not using the laptop. I was thinking that a WOL script somewhere in the very beginning of the boot process would be the first step. I want to connect to a windows desktop and they need as much time as posssible to boot.I have 2 questions. What is the best way to send the WOL packet? Can GRUB possibly do it before booting? Second what is the slimmest distro I can use that will work as smoothly as possible?I tried to search but I am was not able to sort through all the different options without getting confused. One more thing. Can I set up the remote desktop so that when linux finishes booting it is already logged in and I am looking at the regular windows desktop? Maybe some sort of batch file on the windows pc to tell linux when it is ready for the connection. I am sure linux will win the race. After windows is ready the linux pc will initiate the rd connection. The question is how do I go about that?

Ubuntu :: Most Times After Boot Up The Display Is Black?

Nov 8, 2010

This little guide is for anyone with an HP Touchsmart Tm2 series running Ubuntu 10.04 and above. PLEASE NOTE: These workarounds, solutions, and tips have been tested and verified to work on an HP Touchsmart Tm2-2050us running Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx and Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat. Installation: There are no problems I have experienced with installation except for the display not working on the live USB/CD images occasionally, this can be fixed by simply closing the display lid, and reopening it (this usually has to be done at least 2 or 3 times). Display: Most times after boot up, the display is black. A workaround for this is closing the lid and reopening it (repeat until the display works). Another reported solution is as follows:

1) Open a terminal
2) Type:

Code:
sudo nano /etc/rc.local 3) Add this to the bottom of the file (this disables the ATI part of the hybrid graphics card):
Code:
echo OFF > /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch
4) Press CTRL-X (to exit), Y (to save changes), and ENTER/RETURN to accept the file name.
5) Reboot
Note: This solution is also reported to increase battery life.

Trackpad: It may seem that the right click button is disabled, but it isn't. To right click, you must tap the very bottom right corner of the trackpad. Also, by default the trackpad does not have multi-touch enabled (even though it is capable of it). A reported solution for this is:

1) Open a terminal
2) Type:

Code:
sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-two-finger-scroll-touchsmart-tm2.conf
3) Add this to the bottom of the file:
Code:
Section "InputClass"
Identifier "enable synaptics SHMConfig"
MatchIsTouchpad "on"

Finally, what other tricks could I use with this 2nd HDD to speed things up?

Ubuntu :: Restart Several Times The Bios And Boot Loader?

Jun 17, 2011

First off, i have ran 10.10 for the past 6 months without any problems. Then last week i decided to try 11.04. I installed using Wubi. Now the problem is the computer only freezes when I am using a web browser (firefox). it completely freezes where I can do nothing, so I will kill it with the power button. When i try to restart, not even the bios will boot up, just a blank screen with the num/caps lock key flashing.

But after trying to restart several times the bios and boot loader will eventually come up and will start up normally until the same thing happens. I decided to reinstall using wubi so when i tried to boot itno windows, the windows partition was corrupted. I fully restored windows and installed 11.04 with wubi again only to have the same freezing problems.

I will be trying 10.10 again and see if it just a 11.04 issue, but thought this problem should be out there if anyone else has a similar experience

Ubuntu :: Netbook Boots Into Setup Multiple Times Before Boot Or Freezes

Jun 4, 2011

I actually have it installed on two of my computers. One is an older Acer Aspire 3100 that dual-boots windows 7 and Ubuntu 11.04, and an Acer Aspire ONE that has Ubuntu 11.04 as main OS. Before Ubuntu, (even currently) I'm a MAC user, and i'm really liking Ubuntu. On my 3100 it works just fine except the screen flicker on wake, but a quick reboot will solve that.

On my Aspire ONE i've had to re-install ubuntu multiple times. (we're talking 5 or 6 in the last month) Sometimes, it'll boot up to absolutely nothing. One time I got a weird error message everytime it booted. The last install froze up a lot, and eventually would only start to boot into setup. I reinstalled Ubuntu, again and it worked until I shut it off. Boot back up, same thing. Threw me right into setup. I was able to get around it after 5 or so tries of rebooting, hitting ALT F11 and somehow got into ubuntu recovery, but loaded normally. I'm using it now and it's working great currently.

Specs on the ONE

1.5GB Ram
8GB SSD (could this be the culprit?)
ATOM (1.8 or 1.6) GHz Processor.

Halfway through this fiasco, I put windows XP on it and used it solid for 3 days without any of the mentioned above issues.

OpenSUSE Install :: Respawning Too Fast - Error: "Respawning Too Fast - Disabled For 5 Min" Freeze

Dec 12, 2009

Installing 11.2 from KDE LiveCD on an IBM ThinkCenter with 3.2Gb CPU and 1Gb RAM. Ubuntu 9.04 on first two partitions. Other posts mention problem with init. But this is happening with the install so not able to address that. No apparent md5chksum for LiveCDs. No mention of this problem in installation help guide. Ubuntu Servers :: Windows DHCP Server - Multiple Boot Servers ?

Apr 1, 2011

I'm curious if anybody can shed some light for me in this department. We're in a large environment with a Windows DHCP Server. We have been tinkering with LTSP on Edubuntu as thin and fat clients. It works great, but right now we just have 1 server handling the lab, which works fine unless we want to expand, which may be very possible.

These are the instructions I received:
Login to your windows server and load the DHCP configuration screen
Create a DHCP reservation for the MAC address you obtained
Add the configuration options below to enable the machine to boot from the LTSP server
017 Root Path: /opt/ltsp/i386
066 Boot Server Host Name: <ip address>
067 Bootfile Name: ltsp/arch/pxelinux.0 # Specify CPU architecture in place of 'arch', for instance 'i386'

From: [url]

I'm curious, what if I want to have multiple Ubuntu servers on the network that I want to have bootable? For example, let's say I have 3 labs, and 3 servers. Server A to Lab A, Server B to Lab B, and Server C to Lab C. I want all C's computers to boot to C, and B to B, A to A, etc.

1 - How would I add multiple entries on the Windows DHCP Server to allow all 3 (A B C) servers to boot?

2 - How would I be able to isolate the clients so ONLY Lab A clients boot to Server A, etc?

Ubuntu Servers :: Stuck At Boot With Raid (non Boot) In Fstab = Useless?

Nov 1, 2010

Forgive the terseness. I'm frazzled with this issue, perhaps I should have asked earlier. Every weekend for the past 2 months has been an endless cycle of 'repair broken system' off the install disk.

Installed from Ubuntu server 10.04LTS x86_64, + xfce-desktop Here is uname -a Linux ournas 2.6.32-25-server #45-Ubuntu SMP Sat Oct 16 20:06:58 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux If I add my raid + lvm to the fstab file, the boot stalls, (no error it, just hangs waiting, forever). So that's a not very user friendly to start with.

I've tried the suggestions about UUID in fstab tried using LABEL instead, or even /dev/xxx. Every time it hangs. I've googled this endlessly and not found a solution. So don't ask why... since I seem to have tried every odd suggestion to fix this, I've lost track. There seems to be some consensus that whoever gave us plymouth laid an egg. Forgive me if I'm wrong, but did we need a better graphical boot if it breaks everything else?
