Ubuntu :: Selecting Grub2 Splash Images?
Mar 28, 2010
I just installed the Grub2 splash images package in Synaptic. The documentation explains how to install them, but I dont see any reference to previewing them. Is there a way I can preview them and see what's available before I decide to install?

I have been running Ubuntu 10.04 for a while now without any issues. I have also been dual booting with grub2 for a while now, only issues being crappy customization. But anyways I had my grub2 splash all set up the way i liked, with a nice background and everything. I run every update Ubuntu wants and have never had an issue until recently.
On June 3rd I ran an update that Ubuntu requested, it installed a new kernel (-2.6.32-22) and requested a restart, as usual. after restarting, my grub splash is gone. I thought no biggie ill just run `update-grub` as i have before and it will fix everything...nope
I get the error message `head: cannot open `/boot/grub/video.lst' for reading: No such file or directory` right where the "image found" message is supposed to be.

grub-install (GNU GRUB 1.97~beta4)
sudo apt-get install grub2-splashimages
sudo cp /usr/share/images/grub/*.tga /boot/grub/

I installed Ubuntu on my system after first installing Kubuntu. Now when I boot into Kubuntu I have this garish mashup of Ubuntu and Kubuntu splash screens. They are mixed up in both the grub2 boot and the Kubuntu login.I tried running sudo update-grub within Kubuntu but that didn't change the screens. How do I restore the default (elegant) Kubuntu splash screens?

If I re-install Grub 2 from the live CD should that reset all the personalisations such as as splash screen and colours in the Grub splash to default? In my case they are not resetting. I would expect them to revert to the default black/white you get when initially installing the OS. the Grub timeout to be a lot less than its supposed to be? e.g. the default timeout setting of 5 seconds is more like 2 or 3 in reality, and when I set my prefered value to 2 seconds it results in being about 1/4 sec or so.

Since updating my graphics driver on ubuntu 10.10, My splash screen has been inconsistant and messed up. Sometimes ill get random command lines mixed in with the usual splash, sometimes the splash wont show and it will just be black till the desktop appears, sometimes it flashes on and off. I originally tried fixing the resolution and just made the problem worse. Then I tried installing a new splash via gnome-look.org, but it just made my shut-down splash blank and didnt effect my splash at startup. I just want the original splash that ubuntu is supposed to have.

I'm running 64 bit Ubuntu, and on the start-up after I pass the GRUB it goes blank for a minute then briefly shows the splash for 5-10 secs and then jumps to the login screen. Also the screen is offset by about 10-15 pixels but from the login screen onwards it is centred. (It's also like this for if I'm in recovery mode)
How do I fix this and Im wondering if it is a hardware problem?

I originally have Ubuntu Lucid on my machine. I just installed opensuse 11.2 on another partition without bootloader installed. So I'm still using the Ubuntu Lucid default bootloader grub2. I can boot up opensuse correctly. the nagging thing is that there's no splash screen show up during the boot process, instead, lines of command are flashing, the console background is also missing and the font under console (tty1-6) is huge. what can I do to have these back to opensuse? the current entry in grub2 for opensuse
Code:
menuentry "openSUSE 11.2 (i586) (on /dev/sda2)" {
insmod ext2
set root='(hd0,2)'
search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set 9ac05ede-e7c4-47f3-b55b-66d5844$
linux /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.31.12-0.2-desktop root=/dev/sda2
initrd /boot/initrd-2.6.31.12-0.2-desktop
}
which parameters should I add?

I recently installed Ubuntu Studio and after an update the standard Plymouth splash screen began to show. I tried changing it back via the "sudo update-alternatives --config default.plymouth" method but I am getting a blue kbuntu splash screen instead of the ubuntu studio splash.

I am running Linux from a DVD, not installed. I am not good with installing software, but since the DVD cannot be corrupted, I am content to operate this way. Lately, I have been having problems that previously did not occur. When I try to click on the checkbox to get rid of emails, it doesn't register in most cases, or when it does, I am clicking multiple times so it registers twice, meaning it is unchecked again. Even more frustrating is some issues that are affecting my ability to update my business. I am trying to modify spreadsheets (text not calculations).
Whenever I try to click & drag to select something to change, it keeps jumping around to select only some of what I want, something else or some combination of the 2. When I try to copy and paste several fields from 1 column to another, everything from the several fields in the source column ends up together in the last field in the target column. I am also trying to download some images from a website. There is a single column of links to the images. I have to click on the link to get to the image in order to copy it, then back out to continue looking for more links to do the same.
My computer keeps jumping back 2 steps, then forward 2 steps, and sometimes I lose my place in that list. I could deal with it if it were a small number of links, but this is a list of probably close to 20,000 links. Again, i am operating off of a live DVD so this should not be corruptible, but this has just started happening, and has been an issue the last several sessions.

I know that ImageMagick's convert program can be used as follows to convert a collection of images -- say, in PNG format -- to a PDF file:
convert *png output.pdf
The problem with this is that each image is then stretched to fit on one page, whereas I would like to keep the original dimensions of the images and put as many as possible on one page in the PDF file before moving on to another page.

I am just spent half an hour hunting for a thing that should be totally available already:USB install images of Ubuntu, knoppix and all the others. And, the only good way are so far complicated tutorials where you extract the stuff from an CD image. Why??Hasn't everybody notices that CDs/DVDs are vanishing big time? That more and more systems don't have the readers anymore? Instead of following a 10 point instruction list, it would be nice to just be able to download a Ubuntu 8.10 or whatever USB image and be able to beam that DIRECTLY to a USB stick with a dd command.
Or am a missing something here? Does this exist? It should by no means be mariginal, considering how important USB stick in specific and flash memory in general have become.

I installed Fedora 15, which was my first real departure from Debian based Linux OSs. I absolutely love the new Gnome 3, and was able to configure F15 to work as I wanted it to. On rebooting I realized that there was no boot loader screen, that F15 just booted and didn't give me a choice as to which OS I wanted to use. Eventually I was able to configure grub to let me see the boot loader and added my old boot loader as a choice. This worked well, maybe not a perfect solution, but it worked. This weekend I installed LMDE (Linux Mint Debian Edition) to another HDD. LMDE uses grub2 and after the install F15 was not recognized.
Two questions: Is there a way for grub2 to see F15? or Can F15 be installed using grub2? I really don't mind re-installing from scratch.

I don't know how it came and how to disable it but here is something that will turn me crazy:with Lucid, when I select an URL (or a part of it), an automatic context (popup) menu appears and shows me different options like "Open in Firefox", "Send URL", "Open in Mozilla" and "Open in Opera".I really would like to disable it because I always have to press "Esc" to be able to do a copy-paste.We are a few on the french forum to have the same problem and we cannot find a solution, so I try the "international" forum.

I am trying to move files from one folder to another based on their file extension. I can do it with a single extension, but I want to match multiple.
Example:
This works, but I want it to not only match mov, but also mpg, flv, mp4, etc. I would think something like [mov, mpg, flv] would work, but it doesn't.

I want to load grub2 from grub4dos.I want to load directly the grub2 core. I know how to load first 512 bytes from some patition by chainloader and load grub2, but what I need is to load directly grub2 core without passing by bootstriping code (first 512 bytes). So, my first boot manager is grub4dos, then I can load grub2 and later I load Ubuntu. But I think I have to edit --set-root
What I dont know is how.
In hdd 0,7 (sda8) I have Ubuntu 10.10 and /boot/grub/core.img is in sda8 (hd0.7)
I tried this way:
Code:
title grub2
find --set-root /boot/grub/core.img
kernel /boot/grub/core.img

After a fresh install of fedora 15 gnome 3 I need to download some packages so I can start working with it. but when I try to get them using yum or packagekit, servers are very slow, so i need to find a fast server for my connection like I used to find in ubuntu. there was an ability in package manager to ping all the servers and choose the best one, and I cant find such thing neither in yum nor in packagekit. Is there anyway to do that in fedora 15 ?!

I'm monitoring 20 asterisk servers and I've developed a small php utility that displays me their errors when they happen.Currently I'm using the something like this:tail -5000 /var/log/asterisk/full | egrep -i "ERROR|WARNING" > errors.logThe problem with this is that some servers are getting more traffic then others resulting that on one box 5000 lines might last 5 hours and on another 5 minutes. And as such what I see on the screen might be outdated by a few hours or scrolls too fast for me to see.I'd like to know what would be the most efficient command to extract only the last 60 minutes and perform my egrep on that. Cron is setup every minute. Here's a sample of the log format:
Code:
[Apr 9 08:21:38] VERBOSE[13499] logger.c: Found request for channel [1239279644.1537]

Slackware 13.1 is installed using the installer defaults and I have do nothing else, that I know of, other than installing wireless. (wicd) (I originally installed lilo to the MBR which did not include LMDE in the menu so I re-installed LMDE and Grub included Windows, Slackware and LMDE in the boot menu, as I wanted.) The book, in section 4.2 talks about 'Selecting a Kernel' I don't understand the 'why' of this section. Slackware is working, right? 'It talks about compiling a Kernal from source' - do I need to do this? Why?
